COLUMBIA BEGINS THE 2010-11 SEASON
UNDER NEW HEAD MAN KYLE SMITH
In May, Kyle Smith was hired as Columbia’s
22nd head men’s basketball coach, seeking
to steer the Lions towards the top of the
Ivy League. Smith was the associate head
coach at St. Mary’s, which reached the
Sweet 16 at the 2010 NCAA Tournament
and defeated 10th-seeded Richmond and
second-seeded Villanova in the Big Dance.
Smith is an 18-year coaching veteran,
having made stops at San Diego and Air
Force during his career path.
MANY POSITIVE RETURNS
For Columbia, 13 letterwinners return from
last year’s squad which finished 11-17 and
5-9 in the Ivy League. Among the group is
All-Ivy League and All-Metropolitan area
guard Noruwa Agho, who averaged 16.3
points and 4.2 rebounds per game as a
sophomore in 2009-10.
NOT TOO LONG AGO
Columbia’s Noruwa Agho is among the top
returning players in the Ivy League after
a superb sophomore season. Agho made
44.6 percent of his three-point shots and
ranked second on the team in assists and
led the team in steals. A dynamic twoway player, Agho is the second leading
returning scorer in the Ivy League.
OPENING DISH
Columbia enters Friday’s game with a
record of 74-35 all-time in season openers.
Last season, the Lions began the season on
the road at DePaul and hung tough with
the Blue Demons in a hard-fought opener.
DePaul eventually came out on top, 59-53,
behind 19 points and 12 rebounds from
Mac Koshwal. Brian Grimes had 13 points
and 11 rebounds in his first game with the
Lions.
THE LIFE OF BRIAN
Columbia senior forward Brian Grimes will
meet his former team as Grimes played his
freshman season with the Explorers before
transferring to Columbia in 2007. Despite
rehabbing from an injury for most of last
season, Grimes averaged 7.6 points and
5.5 rebounds per game for Columbia in
2009-10.
TENACIOUS D
Columbia will look to remain tough on
defense, as it has been for a large part
of the past four seasons. In every season
since 2006-07, Columbia has finished
among the top three in the Ivy League in
scoring defense and looks to continue that
trend in 2010-11.

STEALING THE SHOW
Columbia ranked third in the Ivy League in steals with 7.4 per
game as a team. Columbia’s large number of steals helped it rank
among the league’s best defensive teams.
TURNOVER A NEW LEAF
The Lions were one of four Ivy League teams last year to record
a fewer turnovers than their opponents. Columbia had a +0.2
turnover margin, good for third in the league.
ONE FOR THE BOOKS
Last season, Noruwa Agho had a tremendous season, scoring 455
points, which ranks among the top 15 for a Columbia player in
a single season. Agho also made 58 three-pointers last season,
which ranked ninth all-time in a single season. Agho is also closing
in on the top ten in career marks of three-pointers made and
steals. He ranks 17th all-time in both categories after his first two
seasons.
IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA
Columbia will open up its season in Philadelphia, the hometown
of two Lions – Brian Grimes and Steve Egee. Columbia has won its
last two games in Philadelphia, defeating Penn in each of the last
two years at the Palestra.
THE HISTORY NOTE
Columbia and La Salle met in the Lions’ last NCAA Tournament
appearance in 1968. On March 9 of that year, the Lions defeated
the Explorers 83-69 behind Jim McMillian and Dave Newmark,
who led the Lions to their most recent Ivy League title that season.
After defeating La Salle, Columbia lost to Davidson 61-59 in North
Carolina, but concluded its 23-5 season with a 95-75 victory over
St. Bonaventure in the consolation game.
COLUMBIA VS. THE ATLANTIC 10
Two seasons ago, Columbia opened its season on the road against
an Atlantic 10 team. On November 14, 2008, the Lions went into
Rose Hill Gym and defeated Fordham, 65-62, to start the 200809 season. Patrick Foley led the Lions with 18 points and five
rebounds. Asenso Ampim (15 points, 14 rebounds) and Jason
Miller (13 points, 15 rebounds) each posted double-doubles in
the winning effort.
WHO COULD IT BE NOW?
Columbia has had a first-year player named Ivy League Rookie of
the Week at least once in each of the last four seasons.

COLUMBIA ACROSS THE COUNTRY
Of the 18 players on Columbia’s varsity roster, 12 different states
and two foreign countries are represented. The Lions have players
from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Alabama,
Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and California
with two student-athletes representing Ghana and Canada.
NEW COACHING STAFF
The Lions have a number of new faces on the bench aside from
first-year head man Kyle Smith. Joining Smith on the coaching
staff is associate head coach Carlin Hartman, a 14-year coaching
veteran, who most recently was an assistant at James Madison.
Koby Altman also joins Smith’s staff after a season at Southern
Illinois. Mike Magpayo is the team’s new director of basketball
operations after he coached high school basketball for 10 years
in southern California. The lone holdover on the staff is Michael
Murphy, who is now in his third season at Columbia.
MILLER, BULGER, SCOTT OVERSEAS
Columbia has three recent alumni who are playing basketball
overseas in Jason Miller ‘09CC, Kevin Bulger ‘10CC and Niko Scott
‘10CC. Miller has played with the Southwest Slammers in Australia,
while Bulger is taking the court with the Durham Wildcats of the
English Basketball League and Scott is playing with the Reading
Rockets in the English Basketball League.
PRESEASON IVY POLL
The 2010-11 Ivy League preseason poll was released on Octopber

KYLE SMITH
Head Coach
First season • Hamilton ‘92
Kyle Smith was named Columbia’s 22nd head coach in the 110-year history of the men’s basketball program on May 2, 2010.
Smith, who is an 18-year veteran assistant coach at the NCAA Division
I level, had worked as the associate head men’s basketball coach at St.
Mary’s College (Ca.) of the West Coast Conference (WCC), for the past
nine seasons. At St. Mary’s, he played an integral role in building their
successful men’s basketball program. In 2009-10, the Gaels finished 28-6
and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.
“Columbia University is very proud and excited to name Kyle Smith as our
head men’s basketball coach” said Dr. Murphy. “Kyle is an outstanding
leader and successful recruiter with a terrific basketball mind. We are
thrilled to welcome him to Columbia.”
Smith replaced Joe Jones, who left Columbia after seven seasons (86108, 39-59 Ivy League) to become the associate head men’s basketball
coach at Boston College of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
“I am very excited to be the next head men’s basketball coach at Columbia, one of the nation’s premier universities,” says Smith. “I am very
grateful to Dr. M. Dianne Murphy and President Lee C. Bollinger for this
tremendous opportunity. I look forward to the challenge of building an
Ivy League championship men’s basketball program at Columbia.”
two games in the previous season. Over the past three years, the school
has won 81 games. As the associate head coach of the Gaels, he was responsible for running the team’s offense, and coordinating all recruiting
activities. He was a vital component of the coaching staff that saw the
Gaels ascend into the Top 25 in 2010.
Before coming to Saint Mary’s, Smith spent one season as the top assistant at the Air Force Academy. During his only season with the Falcons,
Smith served as the offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator and
helped with player development and scouting.
Before joining the Academy, Smith served an eight-year stint at the University of San Diego from 1992-2000. During his time at San Diego, Smith
helped lead the team to the second most victories in school history from
1999-2001. As the Asso ciate Head Coach, Smith helped guide a Torero
defense led the West Coast Conference in fewest points allowed (62.6
ppg) and was also ranked among the top 20 in the country in rebounding
margin in 2001.
Smith is a 1992 graduate of Hamilton College, where he played basketball, and helped lead the Continentals to a 26-1 record and a #1 ranking
in NCAA Division III during his junior season. He holds a master’s degree
in Educational Leadership from the University of San Diego, where he
began his coaching career.
He and his wife, Katie, have two sons, Rocco and Bo. The family resides
in Morningside Heights, close to the Columbia campus.
When Smith arrived at St. Mary’s (Calif.) in 2001, the team had won only
