MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD
The South West is, at last, reconnected with the outside world. The re-opening of the train line at
Dawlish today is perhaps one of the more obvious indicators of the huge variations in the weather that
we have experienced across the course of the Spring term.
It also helps to remind us of how far we have travelled in this reasonably brief period of time. The
difference between the start of January and now may only be twelve school weeks in length, but it is
difficult not to be inspired by the changing landscape that has occurred in this time.
I could not do justice to the extent of activities packed into this term. Fortunately, parents and friends
of the school should have now received copies of our new edition of The Bridge and this sets out much
of what has taken place. Student achievement is the predominant theme running through the stories
and they highlight the commitment staff and students have given to moving themselves and others
forward.
In many instances, whether it is Ten Tors training or simply working hard within a class, we will not see
the product of this endeavour until later in the school year. However, we can be assured that when the
sun is shining brighter, whether it is on the sports field, in the drama hall or in the examination room,
Teign will have demonstrated the excellence that our students possess.
I wish all the families and friends of Teign a very enjoyable Easter break.

Netball update:
Years 7 and 8 Tournament:
The last tournament of the season was won by
the Year 8 team on Thursday, scoring a staggering
34 goals in total. The girls played two teams from
KEVIC and two teams from NAC and the Teign ‘b’
team. The Year 7 team was severely reduced due to
the Year 7 bowling trip taking place. They played
with only five players, instead of seven, two of
which were Year 7s and the rest were made up
the Year 8 squad. Despite a reduced team they
managed to win one and draw one, bringing them
to fourth place (out of six).

A big thank you to the Year 9 netball squad who ran the tournament (pictured- and including Abbey Brimicombe). They
sorted the order of play, umpired the games and completed the final results table. A great job - well done again girls.

Sport Relief
Dates for your Diary
On Friday the 21st of March the newly formed Teign School Sports Council ran a series of events to try and raise
money for Sport Relief.
Tue 22nd April - Return to School
Sport Relief is a national initiative to raise money for comic relief to change peoples lives at home and abroad. The
money raised provides shelter to young people living on the streets and protection to those living with abuse. It will
also provide those in poverty with an education, fresh water and life-saving vaccines. These are only a few of the
ways this brilliant charity works to make a difference and the sports council considered supporting them to be the
best place to start.

Students and staff were given the opportunity to come dressed as their sporting hero or role model. For this privilege
of representing their inspiration they made a donation of £1.
Tues 29th April - Year 7 trip to
During the day students and staff also had the chance to pay 50p to try and row as far as they could in three minutes.
The student that rowed the furthest was Rob Bolt in year 11, rowing 841m. The teacher that rowed the furthest was
Mr Clayton, rowing 864m.
Wed 30th April - Year
The grand totals for each house and the staff group as a whole was added up to find the winning group. The staff
team travelled a total distance of 15, 574m and the student team travelled a total distance of 37,794m, beating the
staff by a long way. In terms of house groups, the total distance covered is as follows: In 4th place were the Eagles,
travelling 6,543m. In 3rd place were the tigers, travelling 8,316m. In 2nd place were the wolves, travelling 10,108m.
And in 1st position were the sharks, travelling 12,827m. The winning house team will be rewarded through epraise.

The following week the staff of Teign School played netball against the staff of Coombeshead to try and raise an
additional bit of money for Sport Relief. The game was an intense and exciting one which sadly didn’t go in Teign
School’s favour. However the score was close and a rematch has been promised!
The grand total of money raised came to £850. Not a bad effort for the first event run by these four incredible
young people! Well done everyone involved and in particular to Natasha Hodnett, Amy Alford, Jessie Peake and
Sam Harvey.

Young Ambassador National Celebration Day
After successfully passing a tough selection process, three students from Teign School had the honour of attending the Young Ambassador National
Celebration Day at Wembley Stadium last week. Jessie Peake (Year 10), Amy Alford (Year 11) and Tash Hodnett (Year 12) have been registered Young
Ambassadors since September 2013, a role in which they oversee sporting activity throughout the school, giving students a voice.
The Celebration Day in London was an opportunity for the three girls to network with other Young Ambassadors from all over the country as well as have the
opportunity to meet and be inspired by Olympic and Paralympic athletes: Kelly Smith, Alex Danson, Steve Brown, Ian Rose and Tim Baillie.
Workshops were held by the Youth Sport Trust, reinforcing the fundamental skills to make a difference within schools and the local community. This allowed
the Teign girls to develop vital skills, meet new people, form new links and learn about other Young Ambassadors experiences to bring back to Devon.
Despite being a long and tiring day, it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A once in a life time opportunity to visit such an iconic venue alongside the honour of
being named as one of the top Young Ambassadors for Sport in the United Kingdom. An experience that will never be forgotten.
