The Honey Grove ISD and
Some folks ask where these
“stories” come from. The following story is courtesy of a
nine year old sweetheart named
Emily. Emily and her Peepaw
were enjoying a Sunday afternoon watching the water flow in
the channel beneath the Sulphur
Bridge on FM 904. Peepaw
shared this story and the smile
on Emily’s face beamed with
pride in her Peepaw. The story
must be true … her smile
proved it announced that much.
A Baptist minister decided
that a visual demonstration
would add emphasis to his
Sunday sermon. Four worms
were placed into four separate
jars. The first worm was put into
a jar of alcohol. The second
worm was put into a jar of cigarette smoke. The third worm
was put into a jar of chocolate
syrup. The fourth worm was
put into a jar of good clean soil.
At the conclusion of the
Sermon, the Minister reported
the following results: The first
worm in alcohol - Dead. The
second worm in cigarette smoke
- Dead. Third worm in chocolate syrup - Dead. Fourth worm
in good clean soil Alive.
So
the
Minister asked the
congregation, "What
can you learn from
this demonstration?"
A little old woman in
the back quickly
raised her hand and
said, "As long as you
drink, smoke and eat
chocolate, you won't have
worms!
Easter: Thinking of Others
Read Matthew 26: 36-45
through the lens of 2
Corinthians 5:21, “For our sake
he made him to be sin who
knew no sin, so that in him we
might become the righteousness
of God.”
For most Christians there are
two great days on the church
calendar, Christmas and Easter.
However, we often are too busy
to stop and truly reflect on what
the birth, death, and the resurrection of Christ means to us.
We fill our days ahead of
Christmas and Easter with shopping, buying new outfits, filling
up eggs, wrapping boxes, going
to parties, school functions,
sports, and on and on.
Please, let this Easter be
different for you and/or your
family. As a church family let
us do something different.
Challenge yourself to step away
from the computer for a day,
turn off the television, unplug
the headphones, and focus on
the death, burial and resurrec-
tion of Jesus Christ.
Set aside time each day during the week leading to Easter
Sunday to read the scripture
passage and pray. If you have
young children at home, allow
them to participate Stop this
week and marvel at what Jesus
did for us. Please do not let this
Easter pass by as a Christian
having not truly reflected on the
sacrifice and resurrection.
“But Peter rose and ran to the
tomb; stooping and looking in,
he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what happened.”
(Luke 24:12).
Find ways to include others
in your daily devotion. An
encouraging phone call came
this week from Mr. Bob
Moffatt. Bob and his wife,
Ruby, live in Irving, Texas.
Though they live 100 miles distant, they recently became
members of the Baptist church
in Pecan Gap. Their son, James,
is building a place near Bug
Tussle. Bob Moffatt reads the
Weekly Gazette and includes a
unique ministry when he reads
the paper. In relating what he
does he has taught his pastor a
new way to respond to the needs
of others. Bob will place his
hands over a name in an article
and pray for that person.
Jesus prayed in the Garden
before He died for you and for
me. As we prepare for Easter let
us pray for those Jesus loved
and died for. When you see
someone, when you think of
someone, when you read of
someone … stop and pray for
that person or persons. Pray for
Bob and Ruby. She will celebrate a birthday on April 3.
Now, we will shift our
subject to our friend, Ed. Ed
decided his injuries from an
accident were serious enough to
take the trucking company
(responsible for the accident) to
court. In court, the trucking
company's fancy lawyer was
questioning Ed. "Didn't you
say, at the scene of the accident,
'I'm fine?," questioned the
lawyer. Ed responded, "Well
I'll tell you what happened. I
had just loaded my favorite
horse, Larry … "I didn't ask for
any details," the lawyer interrupted, "just answer the question. Did you not say, at the
scene of the accident, 'I'm fine!'"
Ed said, "Well I had just got
Larry into the trailer and I was
driving down the road..."
The lawyer interrupted again
and said, "Judge, I am trying to
establish the fact that, at the
scene of the accident, this man
told the Highway Patrolman on
the scene that he was just fine.
Now several weeks after the
accident he is trying to sue my
client. I believe he is a fraud.
Please tell him to simply answer
the question."
By this time the Judge was
fairly interested in Ed's answer
and said to the lawyer, "I'd like
to hear what he has to say about
his favorite horse, Larry." Ed
thanked the Judge and proceeded, "Well as I was saying, I had
just loaded Larry, my favorite
horse, into the trailer and was
driving him down the highway
when this huge semi-truck and
trailer ran the stop sign and
smacked my truck right in the
side. I was thrown into one
ditch and Larry was thrown into
the other. I was hurting real bad
and didn't want to move.
However, I could hear ole Larry
moaning and groaning. I knew
he was in terrible shape just by
his groans. Shortly after the
accident a Highway Patrolman
came on the scene. He could
hear Larry moaning and groaning so he went over to him.
After he looked at him he took
out his gun and shot him
between the eyes. Then the
Patrolman came across the road
with his gun in his hand and
looked at me. He said, "Your
horse was in such bad shape I
had to shoot him. How are you
feeling?" “Now, Judge”, said
Ed. “What would you have
said?”

Used Books To Be
Available in Windom
By: Malinda Allison
The Friends of the Bertha
Voyer Memorial Library has
teamed up with Nancy and Greg
Brewer to provide used books
two Saturdays a month from a
storefront in Windom at Third
and Main.
The book sales previously
held by the Friends were
plagued by bad weather, and
were only held several times a
year.
Nancy and Greg Brewer
have generously provided a
location where used books can
be offered more frequently and
in all weather.
The current plan is to be open
on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays a
month from noon until 7:00. A
large selection of books are
available with a suggested donation of $1.00 per book for most
books. Proceeds will benefit the
Bertha Voyer Memorial Library
and civic projects for the town
of Windom.
Join us for the grand opening
on April 4 from noon until 7:00
and pick up some good reading
material.

PAGE 5, MARCH 26, 2015 WEEKLY GAZETTE
By: Lorrie Page
Hello, Honey Grove Weekly
Gazette readers!!!
Just got word that Mary
Williams is still hospitalized in
Room 530 at Paris Regional
Hospital. Her white blood
count is still going up and down
and the doctors can’t see to figure out why, said her daughter
Shelia Kinard. She is still having bouts of confusion. Please
keep Mary Opal in your
thoughts and prayers.
My aunt, Barbara Piland has
recently been found to have
breast cancer. Cancer Center
doctors have found that it was
caught in it’s early stages, so put
her on your prayer list, will
you? Jerry (Hungry) Piland is
still fighting lung cancer, with
treatments that seem to have
stopped or slowed the cancer
growth. Keep Hungry in your
thoughts and as you send your
daily message to the Lord too.
Here’s to keeping all those in
need on your prayer list!!!
Tax Deadline Day is coming

Auditions for the Creative
Arts Center's production of
JAMES AND THE GIANT
PEACH will be Saturday,
March 28 from 2 to 3:30 and
Thursday, April 2 from 5 to
6:30. There are roles for all ages
and experience levels - no experience is necessary! Anyone
interested in being a part of this
wonderful story should audition
- you don't have to take a role
with lines; you can just be an
"extra"! This enables everyone
in the family to participate.
There are roles for all ages,
including adults.
JAMES AND THE GIANT
PEACH is the tale of James
Henry Trotter who is being
raised by his mean, wicked
aunts. Treated like an erstwhile
Cinderella, James is miserable
until an old man gives him a bag
of "magic." James spills the
contents of the bag beneath a
dead peach tree in his yard, he
awakes the next morning to find
a giant peach on the tree - a
REALLY giant peach.
The wicked aunts advertise
the marvel and begin charging
money for people to see it. One
day, James meets some giant
insects who grew within the
peach and his adventures truly
begin!
The popular children's story
by Roald Dahl was adapted by
David Wood. The script is
funny, clever and children of all
ages will enjoy seeing the production - or participating in it!
The director of the show will be
Sandy Barber.
For more information on the
auditions, call the Creative Arts
Center at 903-640-2196.

Ramblings
Need a place to sell
your wares?
By: Lena Shaw
Here it is springtime again.
Soon flowers will be blooming,
trees will be leafing out, and the
area will come alive once more.
Happy spring.
In a note from Mrs. Burleson
she says that she is doing well at
this time, and two second
cousins, Dwayne Gilbert’s
daughters, had been to see her.
They live in Nachitoches,
Louisiana where they grew up
as their dad was a professor at
the University there. Dwayne
was a ’41 graduate of Ladonia
High School. As usual, Mrs. B.
sends her love to everybody in
the area.
Ricky Beeler is making plans
for a celebration of the 55th
anniversary of Fannindel which
will be held in September. As it
was for the 50th anniversary
there will be a parade and other
activities.
Birthday greetings on March
21st to John Arthur Smith,
Dorothy Smith and Robert Hill;
on March 22nd to Bertha L.
Morris and Leigh Ann
Scarborough Jones; on March
23rd to Suzanne Worley George
and Keegan Brevard; on March
24th to Jana Stancil and Edna
Lilley Scarborough; on March
25th to Brandon Chaney; on
March 26th to Garnida
Hoskison; on March 27th to
Randy Conley; on March 28th
to Julia Askew Huff and Angela
McDonald; on March 29th to
Lance Conley and on March
31st to Karla Braley and Cary
Ray Sansing.
Sympathy is extended to
Marc McNeal in the loss of his
father Dale Wayne McNeal who
passed away Monday March
16th in Paris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were at 11: 00
a. m. Wednesday in Roxton.
The Kerry and Tracy Crews
family met together for a meal
at Salt Grass Steak House to celebrate the birthday of Brandon’s
birthday.
That is a wonderful place to
eat as we celebrated the 50th
birthday of the late John Shaw
there. The steaks were delicious
and the service great.
Tommy Don and Janice
Runnels and family had a great
time together on a trip to a fun
place and to have a good meal
together. Nothing is better than
having all the family in the same
place at the same time.
Although I was not present I
know that services at First
Baptist Church Sunday March
22nd were inspiring. David
Howard always brings a good
message at worship services and
a Bible study prior to Church
services, led by Tom Hulsey, is
enlightening as we delve into
the writings of Paul. It was also
a special service in that there
were two baptisms, when Kylee
and Jordan Miller were ‘raised
to walk in newness of life’.
Hayden Thomas, son of
Sheri and David Howard, joined
a group from the TAMU-C
Baptist Student Union in a mis-
sion trip to Padre Island during
spring break.
The Ladonia Chamber of
Commerce plans and brings
about events to bring members
of the community together. On
March 28th the Spring Fling
will be held, beginning with a
pancake breakfast served by the
LVFD at the fire station at 8:00
a. m. an Easter egg hunt at 11:
00 a. m. and other festivities
during the day. In April the
annual Chamber of Commerce
banquet will be held at
Fannindel School, and May 2nd
the annual 20 mile garage sale
will be held. The Chamber
meetings and events are well
worth attending as they are
designed to help build the town.
Martha Hornsby Shaw has
now moved into her Ladonia
home on Oak Lane. Welcome
home, Martha. Friend and classmate, Janice Franklin Connell
visited with her Sunday afternoon.
The newest member of the
Shaw family, Mary Shaw will
be wed to Ryan Smith on April
19th in Tennessee. Since we
will be unable to go to the wedding, may I share a poem
(author unknown) that I will
send to her, which I have
already shared with Madison
and Savannah.
I’ve traveled paths you’ve
yet to walk, learned lessons old
and new
And now this wisdom of my
life I’m blessed to share with
cxvtÇ ZtÑ axãá
you.
Let kindness spread like sunshine, embrace those who are
sad
Respect their dignity, give
them joy, and leave them feeling
glad
Forgive those who might
hurt you and though you have
your pride
Listen closely to their viewpoint, try to see the other side.
Walk softly when you’re
angry, try not to take offense.
Invoke your sense of humor.
Laughter’s power is immense
Express what you are feeling. Your beliefs you should
uphold.
Don’t shy away from what is
right. Be courageous and be
bold.
Keep hope right in your
pocket. It will guide you day to
day.
Take it out when it is needed,
when it’s near you’ll find a way.
Remember friends and family
of which you are a precious
part.
Love deeply and love truly
and give freely from your heart.
The world is far from perfect. There’s conflict and there’s
strife.
But you still can make a difference by how you live your
life.
And so I’m very blessed to
know the wonders you will do.
Because you are my granddaughter (great) and I believe in
you.

The White House
I remember when I was just
a little tad bare footed of course,
on my way to Forest Hill School
where Kitty Lou Crumpetler
awaited me. She was my
teacher, you see. Trying to teach
me the things I should know
and every morning as I walked
by, I would think, “Best house
in Forest Hill. I would like to
live in that elegant and historic
house some day, and it is just as
elegant and beautiful as I
thought it was.”
You see we bought the house
and 19 acres of land in 1957,
when my daughter, Rachel was
one year old.
When we walked through the
door, the Lord spoke to my
wife, Golda and said, “Golda,
this is a good house.” And so it
has been, and it is both a privilege and pleasure to live in the
White house, it is Golda and my
intention to die here.
Of course, what made it even
more enjoyable was the White
Family, Mr. and Mrs. White and
a bunch of kids, so it was in the
Sherwood Family, nine boys
and two girls.
These things I remember;
Brother Clifford Wayne had
returned from 7 years of service
in the Marines. He had been in
every major battle in the South
Pacific and now he was home,
Bob Bowles brought his from
Honey Grove. Wayne was
dressed in the beautiful dress
uniform of the Marines. He
hugged Mama, shook hands
with Papa, his older brothers,
and even me and Jess Randall
got in a “dogpile” with him, he
went into the house, pulled off
his uniform and never wore it
again, put on his overalls, and
went to help milk the cows. At
that time, Elbert, “Ebb” White
came and he and Wayne sat
cross-legged in the dirt and
talked until 2 a.m. at one time I
heard the sound of a guitar.
In that day families had par-
ties at their house for the
young ones. There was one near
home on the coming Saturday
night, and I asked Papa if I
could go. Absolutely not, you
are way too young. So next day
I asked again, this time Papa
said, only if Ray takes care of
you and mind your manners. So
Ray White said, “If course I
will, my pleasure.”
So I went to my first party. I
didn’t understand a thing that
they were doing, but I enjoyed,
sitting by Ray White, my friend,
eating his popcorn. When
Wilson died, I talked to his son,
Stan. He said, “I not only lost
my father I lost my best friend.”
“Precious Memories, How
They Ever Flood My Soul.”
And thats the way it was, Down
Home.

More on Fishin’ & Fussin’
Well Folks, there we were on
our island. J W Shannon and
myself. The crappie had quit
biting, the clouds were building
in the East, a little lightning, a
little thunder, some wind and
J W still convinced that it was
my fault that the boat had gotten
away. So I waded out in the
cove, hoping the water wasn’t
too deep. The cove was full of
stumps and I figured about a
thousand snakes. Maybe not
quite that many, but even one
was too many. The water got up
to my neck a time or two, but no
deeper. Good thing, cause I
would have had a hard time
swimming in my boots. Wasn’t
no snake going to bite my toes.
I got to the boat after a while
and managed to get in without
turning the boat over. I paddled
back to where J W was waiting
and we loaded up. We made it
back to the campground and I
got into some dry clothes. Then
we were faced with all those
fish to clean.
Now the game wardens had a
strict set of rules for fish. They
Jerry A. Piland, Sr.
had to all be a certain length,
and you could not catch but so
many. My rules were a little
different, I kinda averaged them
out. If one was a bit short, I

figured one of the longer ones
would even that out. Also, I
was not to good about counting
while I was catching fish.
Luckily we did not see any
game wardens. But when we
dumped out our live baskets and
I saw that pile of fish, I kinda
wished that I had gone by their
rules a little closer.
Now I’ll admit that I never
was very good about cleaning
fish. I had fished with Daddy
all my life, then with Carl
Neeley. They were both good at
cleaning fish, so I usually just
gutted them and got them ready.
Carl had learned how to fillet
crappie with an electric knife;
you didn’t even have to skin
them. He could fillet a crappie
quicker than a cat could like
his……Whiskers.
But, Carl and Bobby had not
gotten back yet, so it was up to
me and J W. We started in on it
and were butchering the fish
pretty bad when they finally
showed up.
Then the arguing started
again. Carl wanted to know
who had given us all those fish.
He said without him there, no
way that J W and me could
catch that many fish. We
assured him we did and asked
him to help us clean them. He
said if you caught them, you
clean them.
So he sat there and criticized
us for a while, then took the
knife and went to cleaning fish.
He said they would all ruin
before we could get them all
cleaned. Fast as he was, we
were still a good while finishing
up. While we were cleaning,
Bobby got out the fish cooker
and grease and started cutting
up taters.
We fed just about everyone
in the campground that wanted
to eat and still had fish to put in
the freezer.
J W had to go home the next
morning cause he had a run to
make. Carl, Bobby and I fished
another day or two, and then we
packed it in.
Carl never did accept the fact
that J W and I had caught all
those fish.

I Remember Raburn Houchins
By: J.H. Sherwood
I had nine brothers, I did not
love them with a small tentative
love, I loved them with full
hearted, over flowing love.
They were all fine men. Now no
man can control time, it didn’t
seem like long enough, one of
my brothers rode into the sunset, and I grieved mightily, after
a few days I thought, why he is
exactly where is ought to be.
He’s probably riding his horse
in the angelic host, and I was
comforted.
I never knew Raburn, never
saw him, never visited him in
his home. But I loved him even
as a brother. I loved him as
much as I loved my own natural
brothers. He was my spiritual
brother.
I knew some things about
him, he lived in Seminole,
Texas and was a big farmer, his
crops included cotton, (I was
raised in the cotton patch). I
know above all things he was a
Christian. So am I. I was in the
ministry for sixty years, all in
small churches.
I write a column in our local
newspaper called “Down
Home”, Rayburn liked it, I
made it into a book and sent one
to him, and we began corresponding on a regular basis
until his death.
To whom that reads this message, and knows family and
friends of Raburn tell them I
loved him.
And to all of those I say:
May God Bless You Richly.
With love,
Sherwood.
