A Select Glossary
Thank you to our generous sponsors
Here are some terms we thought would be helpful
when purchasing your favorite artwork:
Painting
Acrylic is fast drying paint containing pigment suspended in a polymer
medium.
Oil is slow drying paint with pigment typically suspended in linseed oil.
Watercolor has pigment suspended in a water soluble vehicle and is
lightened with varying amounts of water, creating a semi-transparent
paint.
Gouache is similar to watercolor but contains a higher ratio of pigment
and the addition of chalk particles to make the paint more opaque.
Sculpture
A three-dimensional work of art that may be carved, modeled,
constructed, or cast.
Printmaking
An indirect process where the artist’s image is transferred from a block
or plate to a surface, such as paper.
An original print uses a block or plate created by the artist and is not a
reproduction, even though multiple copies are often made.
Intaglio prints are made by cutting into a plate and printing the recessed
areas. Various types include etching (using acid to bite lines drawn in a
wax coating), drypoint (incising lines directly), and aquatint (using acid
with a grainy wax resin to achieve tones).
Relief prints use the flat (raised) surface of the wood or linoleum block
for printing rather than the recessed areas, which remain uninked. Types
include woodcut or linocut.
Armonk
Square
Planographic prints are made from a uniformly flat surface. Types
include silkscreen (serigraphy), which uses a stencil applied to a silk
mesh through which ink can pass, and lithography, where drawings or
paintings are made with grease crayons or inks on a stone or plate.
A monotype is a unique impression that is inked or painted directly
on a plate.
A limited edition is a set number of homogeneous impressions from
a plate.

Reproduction methods

The Art Show happens only because of the many volunteers who play their special
roles and do their jobs so well. We thank the nearly 200 people who come together
around show time to make this event successful. And we’d like to give extra thanks
to the core group of dedicated people who give an even larger amount of their time,
some throughout the entire year.

An old English mansion. A raging thunderstorm. Ten strangers.
Murder, mystery, music and comedy abound when the guests disappear
one by one—knocked off by cleverly fiendish devices. Join the fun as
Miss Tweed, the amateur sleuth, sets out to solve the crimes…
but the butler didn’t do it! With songs like “I Owe It All To Agatha Christie,”
it’s a zany whodunit for all to enjoy.
