« Los Hijos de Mama Cumbe » brings together the stars of
Cumbia (the most acclaimed Colombian musical genre) with the new generation
of musicians. A project without precedent that intends to disseminate traditional
Colombian music around the world.
“Los hijos de Mama Cumbe” will be touring Europe from October thru November
2013 starring at Festival Villes des Musiques du Monde in France. Petrona Martinez,
Juancho Fernández and Lidia Montero will be singing, accompanied by Tato
Marenco and 8 accomplished musicians. An spectacle of drums, bagpipes and
whistles that awaken the senses and gets the body grooving!
In the album “Mama Cumbe”; which is currently in its last recording stage,
famous singers Totó La Momposina, Petrona Martinez, Juancho Fernandez and
Lidia Montero perform for the first time as a unity. It contains cumbias (among
other rhythms) written and composed by master Gabriel Segura Miranda, the
person to whom we pay tribute thru the fulfillment of this production.

( Talaigua, Bolivar ) Known as the pioneer of Cumbia for over thirty years now,
bringing this Colombian genre to many stages around the world. Totó is also
considered an expert in Magdalena river’s music (Chandé, Tambora, Pajarito),
featured on the album “ La Candela Viva” recorded in England under the direction
of Peter Gabriel. Some of the prizes she has won include: WOMEX award 2006,
Grammy Award 2011 for album “Latinoamérica” with CALLE 13 and Grammy
Award 2012 with album “Pecados” for her collaboration with Lila Downs and
Celso Piña.
Totó La Momposina
( San Cayetano, Magdalena ) Black music, songs of bullerengue, chalupa,
fandango and lumbalu (vigil chants) are the specialty of Petrona. With her
compositions she has toured Europe, Asia and America. Her first album called
“Le bullerengue” was launched by OCORA Records in the year 1998. With two
Latin Grammy Award nominations: in 2003 with album “Bonito que canta” and
in 2010 with “Las penas alegres” as best album of traditional music, Petrona
represents the African side of this project. She interprets the bullerengue of
Lidia Montero “Duelo en la Aldea”, among others.
Petrona Martínez
( Soledad, Atlántico ) Between cumbias and merecumbes, dances of
tradition and a home lifestyle with her husband and guardian Gabriel Segura,
Lidia Montero debuts between Soledad and Barranquilla to then be highlighted
on national stages. Songwriter and singer, she recorded with Cumbia Soledeña
a famous and legendary group from the sixties, which produced the first album
of traditional Cumbia in Colombia, a particular style where the flute of millo is
the main instrument.

( San Jacinto, Bolivar ) Singer, percussionist, and composer; immersed in
Cumbia music since his childhood. Accompanied the great Andres Landeros
“The king of cumbia” in his very beginning. Then integrates the band Gaiteros
de San Jacinto, an emblematic group that produces music of bagpipes, under
the sponsorship of his uncle, poet, singer and machero Toño Fernández. With
them Juancho wins the 2007 Latin Grammy Award for the album “Un fuego de
sangre pura”.
Juancho Fernández
(Soledad, Atlantico) Songwriter, poet, singer, and founder of Cumbia in Soledad,
Colombia. He toured from the Caribbean to the United States as a guest in
meetings and international festivals of decima. Within his repertoire of hits the
song “Santo Parrandero” certainly stands out, a true hymn of the Carnival of
Barranquilla. Gabriel is the creator of the majority of songs that contain this
album, which is also dedicated to his life and work. We had the opportunity to
record Gabriel with Totó la Momposina singing “Mama Cumbe” and pay him a
well-deserved tribute in life. Gabriel deceased on October 6, 2011.
Gabriel Segura
( Barranquilla, Atlántico ) Carnival of Barranquilla forged in him the very roots
of Cumbia since he was a little kid. Disciple of drum master Paulino Salgado
Valdez “Batata III” Tato joins “Batata y su rumba palenquera”, “Alé kumá” and
then integrates the group of Totó la Momposina; the platform that allowed him
to tour the most important World Music festivals around the world. In 2008 he
launches his first album «Noche de Tambó». Based in Paris more than 7 years
ago; the city of choice for his higher education in classical percussion and traditional world music, he is now the producer of “ Mama Cumbe “ and participates
in major projects of the french capital such as Frapadingos, Dede Saint-Prix and
Tamboral.
