YORK HOSPITAL PROGRAMMING SCHOLARSHIPS
York Hospital and Kittery Recreation have established a scholarship program for
participants who do not have the financial means to pay recreation program fees. This
financial assistance for scholarships is provided by York Hospital. Kittery Recreation
welcomes all Kittery residents to participate in our programs, leagues and activities.
Due to the generous donation from York Hospital, Kittery Recreation may be able to
provide reduced fees to those who qualify. Applications should be completed prior to
the start of the program; however scholarship fund availability and program
registrations cannot be guaranteed. Upon review by the Recreation Director, qualified
participants may receive assistance with program fees. All requests will remain
confidential. Application forms are available at the Recreation office.

How to watch a good program die
Nothing kills a recreation program faster than those who wait
until the last minute to register. There is a point when a
program must be cancelled if there is insufficient
registration. All programs require a level of scheduling,
staffing and purchasing of equipment/supplies.
So please register early!

If Kittery Recreation cancels a program, the participant
will receive a 100% refund (or credit your account if
preferred)

Withdrawals that are three working days prior to the
start of the program will receive a full refund after a
$20 processing fee is charged. If you opt for an inhouse credit to your account, the $20 processing fee
will be waived.

For less than three working days prior to the start of
the program, a 50% credit will be applied to your inhouse account.

On trips, there is a no refund policy unless we can find
a replacement. If a replacement is found, you will
receive a full refund minus the $20 processing fee.
Photo Policy
By registering for a class or activity, you give us
permission to take and publish photos of your
participation, along with photo identification. Pictures
may be used in the brochure, papers, or displayed at the
Community Center.
To Err Is Human—Occasionally there may be an error in days, times, registration requirements or fees in our
program booklet. When such errors do occur, the KCC will do everything possible to correct the situation
promptly. We thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise.

Slavery in Old Kittery & Berwick:
The Truth Revealed
Historian Patricia Q. Wall will discuss startling new information from her forth-coming book,
Lives of Consequence: Blacks in Early Kittery and Berwick in the Massachusetts Province of
Maine. Based on six years of research, Mrs. Wall’s findings not only refute the old myth of
slavery’s scarcity in this region, they clearly point to significant impact of the presence, labor,
and skills of enslaved Africans, Native Americans and people of mixed African decent.
An Evening with Dustin Pari:
In Collaboration with Rice Public
Library
Dustin Pari is a paranormal investigator on the SyFy channel’s Ghost Hunters and Ghost
Hunters International. He is also the author of the book, And the Devil Shivered: A Year in
My Life. This self-proclaimed “Paranormal Rockstar” will speak on his experiences, from
electronic voice phenomenon to glimpsing possible apparitions. Whether you are a skeptic,
a believer, or something in-between, Dustin will open your eyes to a whole new world.
Images of America: Kittery
A Historic Journey Through
Pictures
The Images of America series is a well known series of photographic history books published
by Arcadia Publishing. One of the newest additions to the collection is Kittery by
Andrea F. Donaghue, a Kittery resident and history lover. In this presentation, come and
enjoy a slideshow of photographs from the book and hear the stories behind how it all
came to be.
Military Ethics Learned
Through Auschwitz
In 2010, Jordan Foley participated in a two-week military ethics trip that consisted of visits to
the Holocaust Museum in Washington, Jewish Heritage Museum in New York, and culminated
with a trip to Krakow, Poland to visit Auschwitz. The program is designed to engage young
military officers from all branches of service and talk about the difficult issues surrounding
the Holocaust. Jordan will speak on what he learned as a military officer from the trip and
how it changed his life.

Eyes of the World
Discovery Center
A Nature Based Preschool
Eyes of the World Discovery Center is licensed by the State of Maine and provides our community
with an enriching educational experience for children ages 2-5.
Our Nature Based Preschool empowers our students to become creative, independent and critical
thinkers. Through outdoor play our children develop self-esteem, a sense of purpose and the
ability to overcome obstacles. These skills support academics in our indoor classroom and build the foundation for future learning.
Our curriculum emphasizes Early Literacy & Math Skills, Cognitive & Sensory Development and activities to strengthen Fine & Gross Motor Skills.
Our Forest Classroom
Our Indoor Classroom
Here at the Eyes of the World
Discovery Center, we offer a
unique environment for the
children to learn and play.
Our beautiful classrooms provide a structured environment
that supports Early Literacy & Math skills, Cognitive and
Sensory development as well as the fine arts and
music. These various activities naturally strengthen Fine and
Gross motor skills.
Do you remember as a child?




Building forts
Digging holes to “China”
Making mud pies
Daydreaming in a special hiding place
These activities are all nature play: unstructured childhood play in the
outdoors. Nature play isn’t scheduled, planned or led by adults. Instead, it’s
open-ended, free time exploration and recreation. For many of us, this sort of
nature play virtually defined our childhoods.

Falun Gong: Introduction with Marcus Gale
Zumba with Christine Antonucci
Falun Gong is an ancient, traditional Chinese practice of “self
cultivation” - a way to improve mental and physical wellness through
five easy-to-learn exercises, meditation, and the elevation of one’s
mind. The practice is based on the universal values of truthfulness,
compassion, and tolerance. This two-hour introductory class will
provide a brief overview of the system, plus a demonstration of the
exercises.
Perfect for everybody - this class is designed to bring people together
to have FUN! The classes mix low-intensity and high-intensity moves
for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party! Latin and
world rhythms take over and you understand why Zumba is often
called exercise in disguise. A total workout, combining all elements
of fitness - cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility,
boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave
class!
