Glen Mills Schools Class of 2011
With their impressive accomplishments under their
belts and an eye towards the future, the Glen Mills Class
of 2011 was honored at the Educational Awards Ceremony in the Hayes Hall Recreation Center, filled with a
large and proud audience on June 23rd.
“We are here tonight for a special reason, to celebrate
our students’ achievements,” Dr. Randy Ireson, the Director of Education at the Glen Mills Schools, said at
the beginning of the evening.
Jackson Hall student Christopher Howard came up
with the “Bringing dreams closer” theme for the ceremony.
Curtis Johnson, the President of the Glen Mills
Board of Managers, welcomed the student body, faculty,
special guests, and award recipients and congratulated
the students on their accomplishments.
Taylor Hall student Elijah Pham, who is headed for
Indiana University of Pennsylvania, earned Valedictorian honors and congratulated his classmates. Pham
earned a Glen Mills diploma and a certificate in the Optical Lab. He also competed on the soccer team and
learned Golf House Management skills. Pham realizes
he has benefited from his Glen Mills experience.
“Without Glen Mills, I probably wouldn’t even be
going to college,” Pham explained.
Meanwhile, Yannick Bourne earned the ACT
Achievement Award.
Students were recognized in a variety of academic
and Career and Technical Education areas while faculty
members Mitch Hoffman, Mike Willard, Aaron Powell,
Russ Bustamante, Jack Scargall, Charlie Fick, and
Lefennis Terry III received Teacher of the Year awards.
Glen Mills Board of Managers member Joseph Hand, Jr.
helped present the awards.
Additionally, a wide variety of scholarships, including the Glen Mills Scholarships, were awarded to qualified students who will be pursuing higher education. Dr.
Ireson encouraged scholarship recipients to remember
those who helped them bring their educational dreams
closer to reality.
Thirty members of the Glen Mills Class of 2011 have
been accepted to 22 colleges or universities.
“With these scholarships, Glen Mills students will be
given the opportunity to reach their dream of obtaining
an advanced degree,” Dr. Ireson said. “For those students who receive these scholarships tonight, do not forget the individual, family, or organization, who through
their generosity, will help make your dream come true.”
One of the highlights of the evening was the screening of a video put together by Robert Hall’s Video Productions students that highlighted many of the
accomplishments of the Class of 2011. The video also
touched on many of the special events that were held on
campus throughout the past academic year.
The Class of 2011 sang the Glen Mills alma mater
and now directs their collective attention to the future.
The Class of 2012 will now be challenged to achieve
even greater heights.

This Bulls Club member excelled in the classroom and was on the soccer team last
fall.
“He has truly benefitted from the educational challenges he has faced while at the Glen Mills Schools,” Dr.
Randy Ireson told the large audience at the Educational
Awards Ceremony on June 23rd. “Throughout his stay at
Glen Mills, he has continually challenged himself in the
classroom and as a role model for his peers.”
Pham is grateful for the educational opportunities he
received at the school.
“The school helped me a lot,” Pham shared. “If it
wasn’t for Glen Mills, I probably wouldn’t even be going
to college.”

Ball, Day, Koliso, and Cape
earn trip to state track meet
By Alan Revels
Battling Bulletin Student Writer
Clarence Ball, Kevin Day, Mahdi Koliso, and Andrew Cape earned a
trip to the PIAA state championships by finishing in the top five at the
District One Boys AAA meet at Coatesville High School in the third
week of May. Koliso also set a school record in the 1,600 when he ran a
blistering 4:16.23.
The following weekend at Shippensburg University at states, Day
posted a 14:41 to earn a third place finish while Ball also came in third
with a 6-6 in the high jump.
“Ball overachieved, which is great,” Glen Mills coach Jason Stouch
said. “We didn’t expect him to make it to states but he worked hard and
peaked at the right time. Ball is the kind of athlete who quietly works
hard and stays focused on what he has to do.”
Koliso came in ninth place and Stouch spoke highly of the talented
senior, who also ran in the state cross country meet last fall and is headed
to St. Cloud State University in Minnesota after graduation.
“Koliso is amazing,” Stouch said. “He never complained about anything and really looked forward to running the distance events.”
Cape, who is just a freshman, came in 10th in the discus (158-6) and
19th in the shot put with a 48-311/4 at states while Day tied for 12th in the
long jump (21-6 ¼).
Glover, Johnson, and Paciocco represent GMS in
Hero Bowl
By Jehova Maldonado
Battling Bulletin Student Writer
Offensive tackle Robert Paciocco, defensive end Martrel
Glover, and fullback Felix Johnson represented the Battling Bulls
on the East squad in the Hero Bowl football game on June 3rd at
Widener University’s Quick Stadium. The game is played in memory of fallen firefighters, police offices, and emergency responders
who have lost their lives in the line of duty and proceeds of the
game benefit a scholarship fund for their children. The West used
two fourth quarter touchdowns to pull away for a 37-21 victory.
Glen Mills assistant coach Paul Dixon, who helped coach the
East squad, felt the Battling Bulls trio represented the school well.
“The guys did a really great job,” Dixon said.
The players, who practiced for two weeks leading up to the
game, were happy to be involved in an event for such a great
cause.
“It was an honor to play in the Hero Bowl,” Paciocco said.
“I’m glad I had a chance to play.”
Mark Smith, the Radio Broadcasting instructor at the Glen
Mills Schools, handled the public address duties at the game.

Ninth annual golf tournament
nets over $70,000 for student
scholarships
By Michael Brown
Battling Bulletin Student Writer
One hundred and thirty-eight golfers played in the ninth annual Golf
Course at Glen Mills Student Scholarship Invitational Tournament on
Monday, June 6th, an event that raised approximately $71,000 with the
generous support of the players and sponsors. The funds will be used by
students in the Glen Mills Class of 2011 as they pursue higher education.
The day was filled with clear skies, great golf, coveted raffle and
auction prizes, good food, and comradery. One of the highlights of the
day was when some of the young men of this year’s graduating class
had a chance to introduce themselves to the crowd and tell them how the
Glen Mills Scholarship will benefit them.
Elijah Pham, the Valedictorian of the Class of 2011, spoke on behalf
of his classmates.
“I would like to thank everyone who has supported this tournament,”
Pham, who is headed for Indiana University of Pennsylvania, said.
“Over the last nine years, your generosity has helped students like us
pursue our dreams of higher education.”
Paul Stuhlmiller, the General Manager of the Golf Course at Glen
Mills, and Garry Ipock, the Executive Director of the Glen Mills
Schools, thanked the crowd for supporting the event.
“I want to thank everyone, especially the people who I’ve seen here
for many years, who have supported our young men,” Mr. Ipock explained. “We try to run this tournament like we run the school and we
try to get better every year.”
The golfers enjoyed the day and were happy that they had a chance
to support such a great cause.
“The school does a great job with the kids,” Brendon Doland from
Pine Street Carpenters in nearby West Chester, said. “We’re just trying
to help continue what the school is doing to help the students. Rich
Diaz, Matt Doland, and Bill Driscoll also represented Pine Street, who
has supported the tournament for five years.
Other golfers were also happy to take part in the tournament.
“We had a great day,” Ray Battaglia from James Doorcheck, Inc.
said. “I like what Glen Mills does with their young men. It’s a phenomenal thing.”
Their Philadelphia area company has been a supporter of the tournament for nine years.
Even though the Glen Mills students are the real winners, the team of
Meany, Meany, Gibson, and Gibson shot an impressive 129 in the shamble format to claim first place by a matching of cards over the team of
Spencer, McNamara, Reinhard, and Grandier.

The scholarship is in memory of Casillas, who was an outstanding
Glen Mills student who graduated in 1991 and moved on to attend West
Chester University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. After graduating from West Chester, he returned to
teach at Glen Mills. However, Casillas passed away in a tragic motorcycle accident in May of 2001 but his memory lives on at Glen Mills.
“Alex was an inspiration and positive role model to staff and students,” Dr. Randy Ireson said.
Lafferty plans to use the scholarship to help meet his expenses as he

Bryn Mawr Rehab presents “Cruisin’ Not Boozin’ program
By Ra’ Quan Matthews and Tyler Mitchell-Keyes
Battling Bulletin Student Writers
Ray Lavoie gave an inspirational and dramatic address to the Glen Mills student body
and shared his remarkable story of perseverance
on June 8th. Lavoie’s recovery from his own
harmful behavior and a subsequent accident is
amazing and his message was clear- “I want to
help you understand that every decision you
make has a consequence and it just takes a split
second decision to potentially change your life,”
he said.
Lavoie spoke to the students as part of Bryn
Mawr Rehab Hospital’s Cruisin’ Not Boozin’
program, coordinated by Carol Flounders,
M.Ed. According to Flounders, car crashes in-
volving drugs, alcohol, and speed are the number one killer of teens in America.
Lavoie, a 2005 Penncrest graduate, started
his presentation by saying, “I’m not here to
preach or lecture, but just to share with you
guys that you’re young adults, not kids anymore, and you’re making real decisions that can
have big consequences on the rest of your
lives.”
Lavoie started drinking at 11 but was still a
great student and became a national caliber
wrestler looking to earn a college scholarship.
However, a decision he made would soon alter
the course of his life, and others.
He was getting ready to go to a party when
his mother found him packing a bottle of vodka
in his duffel bag at the age of 16. His mother
did not allow him to attend the party that night
and his friends then called another kid to go instead. That young man, his friend Kyle, and the
three others in the car would eventually die
from a car accident that night.
Lavoie became very depressed, started
drinking more, and doing drugs. He then moved
to center city Philadelphia to be close to the
drug scene where he was arrested. He got lucky
and was sent to rehab to get himself turned
around. After getting himself together, his life
was changed forever when a drunk driver in
Philadelphia struck him while he was going to
Geno’s for cheese steak. The driver hit him at
60 miles per hour, throwing him 75 feet. He suffered a skull fracture and shattered left leg and
was given less than a 30% chance of living as
he fell into a coma just a month before he
turned 22.
Amazingly, however, came out of a coma in
just three days.
“I was extremely lucky,” Lavoie shared.
After extensive rehab and great determination,
the now 24-year-old Lavoie has recovered remarkably and is a gifted speaker for the Cruisin’
Not Boozin’ program. He has given this presentation at least 150 times in the past two years to
various groups, mostly at schools in the tri-sate
area.
Lavoie spoke highly of Bryn Mawr Rehab
Hospital.
“I appreciate them so much for giving me
my life back,” Lavoie said.
He ended his presentation by stating, “I’ve
been through a lot and wanted to make sure that
you guys know that it’s never too late to change
your lives around.”

Coles takes advantage
of “Big Dogs Club”
By Tyrique Craighead
Battling Bulletin Student Writer
When Travis Coles enrolled at the Glen Mills
Schools in November, he weighed in at 310
pounds and knew he wanted to lose weight. He’s
come a long way since then and now weighs just
232 after having lost an astonishing 78 pounds,
approximately 25% of his body weight.
“I was in the Big Dogs Club and we exercised just about every day before lunch and now
I watch what I eat,” Coles said. “I feel great and
I’ve got a lot more energy now than I did before.”
As mentioned, the sophomore member of the
Bulls Club was in the Big Dog Club under the
supervision of Tom Van Horn.
“Travis really worked hard and did a great
job,” Van Horn said. “He dedicated himself to
losing weight and made it happen.”
The Art and Design student plans to return
home and play high school football in Western
Pennsylvania with his newfound figure- but not
before his family gets used to his new physique.
“I was always the biggest person in my family and they were shocked when they saw me,”
Coles said.

Californian Jack Jaqua has been a long time supporter of the
Johnny Releford Omega Boys Club Scholarship. The scholarship
is given in memory of Johnny Releford, an outstanding former
Glen Mills student.
This year, Glen Mills Class of 2011 members Felix Johnson
and Salvador Gaytan received the scholarships. Johnson plans to
use his to help defray expenses at the College of San Mateo while
Gaytan is headed for Chaffey Community College.
Dr. Randy Ireson encouraged Johnson and Gaytan, as well as

their dreams possible.

through their generosity, will help make your dream come true,”
