NOVEMBER PROGRAM
Genealogy Searching Techniques
Don’t miss the wonderful selection of
unique gift ideas we have this year. Our
Christmas ornament features Bob
Green’s photo of the iconic gateway
lampposts at the entrances to the village.
On Tuesday, November 26, Harold
Witter will give a presentation on how to
get started on a genealogy project. Based
on his experiences in developing a
genealogy of his family that contains
over 1,000 pages, Mr. Witter will explain
the references people can use to do
research, other than the usual online
sources. Online genealogy links are only
as good as their input data, so if just one
name is omitted, the searcher can be
misled. Informational handouts will be
available.
Please join us at 7:30 at the Museum at
The Creamery. Bring a friend or
neighbor! Refreshments will be served as
always.
We also continue to carry a selection of Westerwald
Pottery, made in Pennsylvania. In addition to those shown,
we have new ones on order, including soap dishes and new
sizes of crocks.
The purpose of the Skaneateles Historical Society is to conduct and encourage historical research and to collect, preserve, and exhibit
historical material in connection with the Town of Skaneateles.

DRESSMAKER’S FORM?
We are looking for a small dressmaker’s form to use for displaying dresses in our collection. Mannequins are
too large for the tiny waists of women of the era, so if you have a dressmaker’s form, or know where to find
one, please contact us at 685-1360. Thanks!

This recipe for molasses cake, from 1890, is one of the fascinating items in the new exhibit explaining the Hall
family’s history in Skaneateles. Other highlights include Thomas Hall’s Quaker background; his life growing
up on the Loveless farm on West Lake Road, which is currently in the news for possible development; his
attendance at the Octagon School; his relative, Caleb Allis, who ran a store on Genesee St. known as the
Cheap Store; a plank of wood from the barn floor that he carved his name on in 1860; his old leather wallet;
and a photo of the pew in the Presbyterian Church that he gave in memory of his mother.
We even have the recipe transcribed and printed out if you’d like to try it! We will also be serving it for our
refreshments at the November 26 program meeting. Please stop in to see this wonderful display. And a big
thank you to Thomas W. Hall II for loaning us many of the items included in this exhibit.
