Mission
North Hills Community Outreach is an interfaith
organization addressing the needs of people in
crisis, hardship and poverty.
Vision
Northern Allegheny County is a sharing
community where no one is cold, hungry or alone.
Families Served
 5,760 families in 2010-11 received immediate,
compassionate and effective help, an increase of 845 families
from 2009-10.
Food Pantries (1,395 families)
 812 families used the Loaves and Fishes pantry in Allison
Park
 560 families used the North Boroughs Food Pantry at AGH
Suburban Campus
 143 older adults received extra food through Senior
Commodities
 $541,562 in food and grocery certificates was distributed
through our two pantries and emergency food in Millvale; an
additional $24,202 worth was shared with other pantries and
agencies
Utility Assistance (1,538 families)
 1,390 Duquesne Light and 70 Columbia Gas customers were
enrolled or maintained in Customer Assistance Programs
 181 $1 Energy applications were completed, resulting in
$79,550 in grants for families in need
 $57,554 was paid to utility companies to prevent shut-offs
or restore service for 143 families, funded in part by ARRA
through the Allegheny County Department of Economic
Development and the City of Pittsburgh’s Homelessness
Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP)
Seasonal Sharing Projects (1,313 families)
564 children received new backpacks and school supplies
351 families selected free winter coats
724 families received a complete Thanksgiving meal
551 families were given utility and grocery credits through
Sharing Holiday Warmth
 1,220 children received new toys, games and sporting
equipment for the holidays
 527 families received Spring Share candy baskets and food
certificates
 $198,115 in financial and inkind assistance was provided




Emergency Assistance (448 families)
 $871,296 in financial housing assistance was provided for
310 families; $777,321 of this amount was funded by HPRP
 $36,929 was used to provide car repairs, insurance payments,
gas cards and bus passes for 146 families
 $12,304 in prescription, dental and vision assistance was
provided for 53 un- and underinsured individuals

Employment, Legal & Other Help
 164 low-income families enrolled in or
maintained Family Savings Accounts;
21 participants completed the multi-year
program and received $32,211 in matching
funds from the PA Department of
Community and Economic Development
to make critical home repairs (10), buy a car
(8), pursue higher education (2) or purchase a
home (1)
 135 individuals received personalized
employment assistance (résumés, referrals,
computer training) from 17 volunteer coaches
 102 people received free legal help from 19
volunteer attorneys
 62 individuals in poverty participated in the
long-term family development program,
designed to move people to self-sufficiency
 44 low-income workers purchased a vehicle
through the Community Auto Vehicle
Ownership Program. A total of 141 vehicles
were donated.
 17 individuals attended a support group
 17 individuals attended financial literacy
classes and/or worked individually with 5
budget coach volunteers
 10 nontraditional students were awarded
$11,097 in college scholarships
NHCO receives funding from United Way of Allegheny County’s Impact Fund
to assist financially struggling families and vulnerable seniors. NHCO’s United Way
contributor choice code is 2357.

Free Rides for Seniors
Gets New Wheels
This year, a generous Allegheny County Economic
Development grant allowed NHCO to purchase a new
shuttle van to utilize for our Free Rides for Seniors
program.
The original shuttle had logged more than 100,000
miles and provided more than 35,000 free rides to
doctors’ offices, grocery stores, the hospital, banks and
many other destinations for seniors.
In 2010-11, 41 volunteer drivers and dispatchers
provided 7,331 free rides to 244 seniors in
Blawnox, Sharpsburg, Aspinwall and O’Hara.
Rabbi Yaier Lehrer from Adat Shalom in Cheswick
participated in the Blessing of the New Shuttle on April 4.
The shuttle’s annual operating costs are funded by
the St. Margaret Foundation and UPMC Lighthouse Pointe donates office and parking spaces for the
program.
Seniors also were aided by the Faith in Action volunteer caregiving program. With funding from United Way
of Allegheny County and the partnership of Family Services of Western PA, Open Your Heart to a Senior
reached more seniors in need throughout all of Allegheny County. Through NHCO, 179 volunteers helped
611 individuals remain independent by providing them with rides in personal vehicles, performing home
safety checks, making friendly home visits or telephone reassurance calls, raking and snow shoveling. This
year, 41 volunteer fire departments signed on to help shovel snow.
Garden Grows,
Feeds Hungry Families
NHCO opened the Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Memorial
Garden in Bellevue in June and was on track to yield enough
produce to provide bell peppers, tomatoes, sweet potatoes,
cucumbers, beans and other produce for more than 400
families who utilize our two food pantries monthly.
The plot of land was donated by Teresa Amelio and named in
honor of her mother. Teresa’s vision for the garden included
its harvest being donated to pantry families to supplement
the nonperishable items they already receive. In addition to
being organic, the environmentally minded garden is plowed
using the land’s contours to prevent soil erosion and runoff.
Our garden also includes two raised beds to allow green
thumbs of all ages and abilities to help the garden grow.
Throughout the spring, volunteers built various structures
including a shed and fencing, planted hundreds of plants,
weeded, watered and harvested. Technical assistance was
provided by Grow Pittsburgh. Major funders for our first
year included Comcast Foundation, Grable Foundation,
Medrad, PNC Foundation and UPMC Health Plan.

Our Extraordinary Volunteers
Thanks belongs to the 1,385 volunteers including
378 youth, who logged 42,410 hours of their time
and talent this year, a 16% increase from last year.
Our volunteers - the equivalent of 21 full-time staff
members - logged the most hours in the following
capacities:
 Sharing Projects - 361 volunteers gave 1,048 hours
 Food Pantries - 291 volunteers gave 5,637 hours
 Faith in Action/Free Rides for Seniors - 220

NHCO Honored with Wishart Award
In May, NHCO received the Alfred W. Wishart, Jr.
Award for Management Excellence presented by The
Forbes Funds. The award includes a $10,000 prize.
Named for the former head of the Pittsburgh
Foundation, the award is based on commitment to
excellence in leadership, objective analysis in planning
and programming, collaborative efforts, excellence in
human resource management, continuous improvement
in service delivery, measurement and monitoring of
outcomes, commitment to consumer satisfaction and
accountability to the public trust.

constructed from recycled drink pouches as part
of NHCO’s Back to School drive that provides new
backpacks and school supplies.
This year, 141 cars were donated to Community Auto. Community Auto
accepts donations of any vehicle and donors can take advantage of the
possible maximum deduction when their vehicle goes to a family in need.
Through the program, low-income workers purchase a car for a price below
fair market value that includes one-year AAA membership thanks to the
WOMEN of Southwestern PA, six-month warranty, full tank of gas and car
seats, if needed, from a Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield grant.
