There are some things we do
know about monsters. They scare
little kids (but wonder why). They are
nearly always green and have bumpy warts or scads of
scraggly hair. And they eat gross stuff like sardines and ice
cream. But not many people know monsters like to read.
After all, what self-respecting monster doesn’t love a good,
scary story? That’s why monsters will try to take this book
from you. They want to know. They need to know. Where
else can they discover if the chilling Chupacabra eats
monsters? Or find out where to hide from a screeching
Yowie? Or why to steer clear of creeping coffins? Or how
to keep spider spines out of their eyes? Without reading,
monsters would be so…so…vulnerable (and scared)!
So grab hold of this book and start reading before a
monster steals away your survival guide! Oh, and if you’re
wondering whether these stories are real, you decide for
yourself! Boogity-boo!

Mind-Blowing Mix of Animals
Imagine a recipe to mix up the most terrifying animal on
earth. Would it include a wolf and a tyrannosaurus rex? Perhaps
you’d add a dollop of python and a bushel of vampire bat. Mix
them together and you’d have what witnesses have described as
the most horrifying animal they’ve ever seen! Some say the beast
looks like a leathery, hopping wolf with glowing red eyes. Others
tell of a foul stench much worse than a skunk. Still other witnesses claim the large, hairless animal resembles a small panther
with a long, forked tongue. Whatever the description, one thing’s
for sure—everyone claiming to have seen the beast wonders the
same thing: What is it?
The Chupacabra (pronounced “choo pa CAH brah”) is a
legendary animal that has been sighted from Puerto Rico, Mexico,
and Nicaragua, to Chile and several southern regions of the
United States. Original eyewitness reports first claimed to have
seen the Chupacabra in Puerto Rico as early as 1990 and there
have been sightings in the United States as far north as Maine
and across Texas and Florida since the mid 1990s. Although no
confirmed specimen has yet been caught and identified, biologists,
zoologists, and law enforcement officials view the Chupacabra as
a modern legend and will neither confirm nor deny its existence.
Tales of Terrifying “Goat Suckers”
The name Chupacabra comes from a Spanish word meaning
“goat sucker.” The mysterious monster received that name with
the grisly discovery of eight dead goats on a small farm in Puerto
Rico. According to local police, the eight sheep were discovered
dead, each with two or three small holes in the chest area and
completely drained of their blood.

Many witnesses have given details of what the Chupacabra
looks like and though there are differences in their descriptions,
there are enough similarities to take special note. “Dog reptile,”
“hopping, wolf dinosaur,” and “porcupine vampire” are some
of the interesting, and disturbing, phrases witnesses have
used to describe this bizzare beast. Perhaps the most common
description of a Chupacabra is a reptile-like dog, with leathery
or scaly greenish-gray skin and sharp spines running down its
back. Standing about 3 or 4-feet tall on four legs, the animal
has been described walking, running, and hopping. One eyewitness report claimed a Chupacabra traveled nearly 20 feet in
one hop!
The hairless, leathery animal is also described as having a
longer face than a dog, almost appearing horse-like from the
side. Various reports agree that the eyes appear to glow red
and the fangs and claws are much longer than those of dogs or
coyotes. Most meat eaters tear into their prey with sharp fangs.
The Chupacabra, however, bites holes in its victims then sucks
out the blood and, in some cases, the organs. Ewww!

mystery • intrigue
Several months later, an eyewitness named Madelyne
Tolentino, claimed she saw the creature in the northeastern
Puerto Rican town of Canóvanas. It was here that over 150
farm animals and pets were
reportedly killed. Over the
following months, confused
Canóvanas
farmers in rural Puerto
Rican villages and on small
Puerto Rico
farms claimed seeing the
strange animals attacking
their livestock. Sightings have
multiplied over the years and across the miles until they’ve led to
a widespread belief in the mythical beast.
Sound creepy? You bet! But just what does this mystical
monster look like?

Recent Reports and Sightings
The most recent reports include an August 2008 sighting in
the rural town of Cuero in DeWitte County, Texas a few miles
southest of San Antonio, Texas. State Patrol officers caught, on
videotape and running before their car, an animal many believe
is a Chupacupra. The animal turned its head while running to
look at the officers’ car and from the side view, the animal’s head
appeared to have the shape of a horse’s head or that of a wolf ’s.
No one has been able to positively identify the beast, but many
believe it is the legendary Chupacabra. What do you think?
The 2008 sighting in Cuero, Texas wasn’t the only
Chupacabra run-in for that area. A year before, in August
2007, Phyllis Canion of Cuero, discovered three weird
animal carcasses on her property that fit the description of
the Chupacabra. After years of finding dead chickens on her
small farm, Canion took photographs of the freaky animals
and even sent one of the heads to be analyzed using DNA
testing at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. When
the test results came back a few months later, they indicated
the animal was possibly a deformed or mutated member of
the coyote family—but since the hairless skin was blue-gray
and not normal for a coyote, more tests need to be run.

In April 2006, MosNews (a news agency from Moscow,
Russia) reported that the Chupacabra was spotted in Russia
for the first time. Reports from areas around central Russia
claim that a strange beast or beasts had killed both fowl
and sheep. On one farm, thirty-two turkeys were killed
and drained of their blood overnight. Later reports from
neighboring villages claimed thirty sheep were killed in
the same way. Eyewitnesses to the attacks described the
Chupacabra. Officials in Russia have stated their intent to
track and capture the weird beasts.
