When Duncan More first set foot on Longford
Farm, he knew he would walk on the Earl’s
land, in Britain’s Wiltshire, but he did not
expect to wear rancher’s boots as well.
On these ancient grounds, Duncan protects
hedges - national landmarks - by keeping
a 6 meter grass border to avoid them being
sprayed with fertilizer. He looks after the
wetlands attracting grey partridge, deer and
wildlife rarely seen on other farms. Duncan
puts the cows to graze the stubbles of the lands

Let me tell you the tale of Coby Dekker,
a Pioneer of the Green Frontier in the
vast plains of The Netherlands. She was
one of the first to grow 6 to 12 meter
hedges between her barley fields. These
natural green borders attract ladybugs
and hoverflies, natural enemies of crop
eating insects. Less fertilizer, more
nature on Coby’s land.

Have you heard of Lucky Jacky, a fierce
protector of bees? Once Jacky knew nothing
about bees, but destiny threw them in his
path, in the vast barley fields of the French
Beauce. Today his fallow fields are full of
clovers and late bloom flowers so that in
autumn the bees can still feed greedily.
By moving the beehives regularly in a 2km
radius, they get fresh food and pollinate
flowers that in turn attract ladybugs and
birds, which in turn eat crop enemies.

When a smart young man takes on a farm
in the vast plain of the French Beauce,
he finds innovative ways to use science for
more barley and less harm. An Innovative
Ranger, he digs 20 pit holes to research the
soil fertility and the levels of nitrogen; uses
mathematical calculations to analyze the
potential for and type of crops best to rotate
in each plot; and applies fertilizer efficiently
only where needed. ‘Less is more’ is his motto.

In the Southern territories of Germany lives
Sebastian Kürzinger. On his grounds, hop
fields flourish as far as eyes can see, and as
tall as 7 men. But his legend reaches even
higher than his hops: Kürzinger has
pledged his time and attention to protect
the Heather Lark. He builds scaffolding
for the endangered birds high amongst the
hop plants, hidden from predators; ploughs
his fields only once a year, not twice, because
the Heather Lark breeds on the ground.
His peers now follow suit in their own fields.
