Halloween Hit-and-Run Investigation Growing Colder
Father of Victim Requesting Further Action by Sheriff’s Deputies
Despite the fact there were witnesses, a full description of the vehicle, and video footage from
McDonald’s, there is little to show that an investigation into a hit-and-run last week is progressing, say
witnesses to the incident.
At midnight on Halloween, October 31, 2015,
Christopher Hernandez was struck by a car in the
parking lot on the corner of McBean Pkwy and
Decoro Drive, while standing with friends in front of
Rite-Aid. When a silver, four-door hatchback left the
McDonald’s drive-through across the parking lot,
Hernandez approached the vehicle, believing the car
belonged to friends. He was waiting for friends who
drove a similar car and were also coming from the
McDonald’s drive-through.
The 17-year-old Hernandez waved and approached
the vehicle, and witnesses say the car appeared to
deliberately accelerate, and then swiftly sped away
after hitting Hernandez, who fell onto the car’s hood
and landed on the asphalt.

“It was scary. My heart just stopped when
it happened – it was like a scene in a movie.
It happened so quickly. We ran over to him
and he was talking,” said Nick Joyce, a
friend of Hernandez who witnessed the
accident.
Hernandez’ parents in Castaic were called,
and they took their son to Henry Mayo
Newhall Hospital. There a Santa Clarita
Valley Sheriff ’s deputy took some
statements from the victim, who suffered a
broken ankle and some internal bruising.
Six friends of Christopher Hernandez, a
senior at Valencia High School, also went
to the hospital in a show of support, and
stayed until early in the morning.
him. ... It looked like the car sped up, hit his legs, he fell
on top of the car a second or two, rolled off the hood
and hit the asphalt. Like a ragdoll.”
“I was about 10 feet away, and it was 100
percent on purpose,” said Joyce. “Once
Chris waved, (the driver) accelerated; he
sped up substantially, and went full force at
After speaking with Hernandez and his father, Luis, at
the hospital, the Sheriff ’s deputy said he would return,
but was never seen by any of the nine who waited at the
hospital.

In fact, say Christopher’s friends, they were never interviewed about the incident, despite the fact that two of them saw the incident.
“Everyone who was there, we stayed at the hospital until 4:00 in the morning
with him,” said Joyce. “Sheriffs said they’d be right back and ask questions
and they never came back.”
Luis Hernandez has both called and physically gone to the Santa Clarita
Sheriff ’s Station to inquire about the case, and has not garnered any answers.
“The sheriff seems to not be able to find the police report so far,” said Luis
Hernandez, who was directed to the traffic division. “They came in and took
info and said they’d get back to me.”
The Santa Clarita Gazette called the Sheriff ’s Station Tuesday and spoke to
Barbara Mutaw in the traffic division. She said the case is under investigation and that the deputy who was on duty the night of the incident and spoke
with the Hernandez family had the day off but was scheduled to contact Mr.
Hernandez late Wednesday.
Christopher Hernandez’ friends went to McDonald’s to inquire about video
footage, leaving a message with a female employee. At press time, Joyce was
unsure whether the Sheriff ’s Department had tried to recover the recordings.
“I just want to see who did this to me and why he would do this,” said the
17-year-old hit-and-run victim. “I just hope there’s an explanation for hitting
a kid on the street. They had at least 500 feet to see me.”

Become a Better Person
than the One You are Now
by Sarah Farnell
When you look in the mirror, do you see a reptile of a human being? Do you
imagine yourself running for Congress, and then daydream about how you will
NOT vote for yourself for theoretical Congress? Do you have custom flame
decals on your Ford Excursion?
If so, put down that pitchfork and stop sucking the good will from those around
you — there is hope. You might be thinking, “What would an 18-year-old community college student know about ethics and morality?” Well, you have read
the article this far, meaning that you must be desperate. But, becoming a better
person is actually excruciatingly easy with these five steps.
When a cashier asks if you would like to donate a dollar to childhood cancer
research, offer to donate your own child.
Children are worth a lot of money, so doing this would earn you some serious
charity cred.
Recite an impromptu poem whenever you think about the American flag.
Whenever celebrities or politicians find themselves in a jam, they just go on
about how they love their country. Make their patriotism look like child’s play by
reciting a poem whenever you think of the USA. “My country, you are so fine.
My lady, you take away my cries.”
Give a “thank you” card to every homeless person you see.
Sometimes less is more. Find a card — preferably one that sings — and slap it in
the hands of someone less fortunate. It is the least you can do.
Sell your diploma online.
In this country, education is not cheap. Sell your B.S. in environmental science
on Amazon for a discounted price. Someone out there will be grateful for your
hard work. On the down side, someone out there will be a terrible environmental
scientist. There is a price for kindness.
Laugh at all of Bob Saget’s jokes.
If there is anybody on earth who needs charity the most, it is Bob Saget. After he
left “Full House,” the laugh track left too. Just do the right thing and give him a
courtesy laugh. You might think that this would just encourage him, but maybe
if we laugh, it will just go away.

MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER
Ken Striplin
November 2015

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Marsha McLean
November 2015
Every day in our community, emergency
personnel traverse city streets, rushing to a
scene where their skills are needed. Whether
it’s a fire, a traffic accident, a rescue or a
crime, our well-trained emergency personnel
are needed in Santa Clarita on a daily basis.
That is why it is imperative that our community
respect and respond correctly to sirens and
flashing lights on emergency vehicles. When
an emergency responder in an ambulance or
from our Fire, Sheriff or CHP Departments
uses these emergency indicator tools on our
roadways, it is not a drill! They are being
summoned as quickly as possible; many times for life-saving situations.
Your responsibility as a motorist is to pull to the right, even if the emergency
vehicle is on the opposite side of the street. You may be surprised to learn that
many local motorists simply stop in the roadway, assuming that emergency
vehicles will just go around them. Some motorists do not wish to lose their
place in a turning lane and just stay put. Both of these things are not only a
violation of the law, but they are also a serious impediment for emergency
responders.
The precious minutes spent going around vehicles parked in lanes can cost
lives. Imagine if that emergency responder was trying to get to your home?
Wouldn’t you want them there as quickly as possible? Recently, the City
teamed up with the L.A. County Fire Department, SCV Sheriff ’s Department
and CHP to launch an education and outreach campaign aimed at letting
motorists know that they need to pull to the right for sirens and lights.
If you would like more information about the outreach campaign, visit:
www.santa-clarita.com/PullRightSCV. Thank you in advance for respecting
our emergency responders and pulling right for sirens and lights!
If you would like to email me directly, please do so at: [email protected].
Welcome to November! As we enjoy the fall
season, our thoughts turn to cooler weather and the
holidays. If you enjoy keeping things close to home
during this festive time of year, the City has some
upcoming events that you and your family may find
interesting.
This year marks the 20th anniversary for the Santa
Clarita Marathon. The Marathon is conducted on
City streets and also includes a half marathon and
5K run. If you’ve been looking for an opportunity
to get involved with the Santa Clarita Marathon,
but running isn’t your speed, you and your family are invited to join me and
members of the Santa Clarita City Council on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at
7:15 a.m. for the 6th Annual Mayor’s Walk.
Hosted as part of our Healthy Santa Clarita program, this three-mile walk is
perfect for families, groups and teams. The course follows much of the 5K run
course along paseos and city trails and ends at the official Marathon finish
line at the Westfield Valencia Town Center. To register for the Mayor’s Walk
or for more information about the annual Santa Clarita Marathon events and
schedules, visit SCMarathon.org.
On Saturday, November 14, come to the Old Town Newhall Library for the
Literacy Festival being held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Literacy Festival is
sponsored by the City and offers many activities for the whole family. There
will be hands-on activities, such as exploring a life-sized chess game, trying your
hand at engineering challenges, plus the chance to meet authors and listen to
stories. The event will include food trucks, free books (for children up to 6th
grade, while supplies last), and activities to take home. More information is
available at santaclaritalibrary.com.
There are so many great programs and events happening in our city. I would
like to encourage you to check them out on our community calendar available
on the city’s website at santa-clarita.com.
Thank you for your participation in our city. Feel free to email me directly at

OPINION
Lean to the Left
Election
S
ince it was “election week,” (though local elections weren’t overly dramatic
this time around), we may as well talk about some candidates. Let’s go out
of state.
We all tend to stereotype the South as skewing to the conservative Right all of
the time, but there were/are strong races by Democrats for very high office –
governor. Louisiana and Kentucky both had strong contenders for the office,
showing a bit of a swing in the tide. Who knows, maybe the court clerk Kim
Davis holding her ground against gay marriage had something to do with it.
In Louisiana, right-winger Bobby Jindal termed out, so Republican Senator David Vitter threw his hat in the ring. Polling firm Anzalone Liszt Grove
found that the conservative voters who cast ballots for candidates other than
Vitter in a Republican primary election last week – candidates Scott Angelle
and Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, to be exact – are most likely to vote for Democratic candidate Edwards in the runoff election Nov. 21.
By Sylvia Turner
The runoff election later this month will be fun to watch, anyway.
In Kentucky, wealthy Republican candidate Matt Bevin was hotly contended
by Democrat Jack Conway, winning by just 52 percent of the votes. Bevin lost
a Senate primary to Mitch McConnell last year. His Tea Party leanings are
what were weighing him down, I think. And, luckily for Democrats, Bevin’s
known for late tax returns and waffling on issues. Even with the South’s notorious Bible belt conservatism, Kentucky has only had one Republican governor
in the last four decades. In fact, if current Governor, Democrat Steve Beshear,
wasn’t termed out, he’d likely be elected. He ran for attorney general instead
and won.
Law enforcement liked Conway for the job. The Kentucky State Fraternal Order of Police endorsed the Democratic candidate. He made his temperament a
part of the race. Bevin’s been perceived as a bit of a hot-head, at times refusing
to answer reporters’ questions and taking on individuals for their statements
about him.
At press time, Democrat Edwards leads Vitter by double digits.
Edwards is a supporter of state teachers’ unions. His wife is a school teacher,
and he is a member of the House Education Committee. Edwards helped land
a $36 million education hike, confirming he’s a friend to the public school
system. Vitter, on the other hand, backs school vouchers.
Bevin’s strategy was to mock Conway, referring to him as “Mr. Gigglepants”
because the Democrat had a frequent laugh during a debate. Conway said the
election is a choice between the “mainstream and the extreme.” His message
was about jobs, healthcare and early childhood education.
The school debate often reminds me of the war in Iraq. Conservatives blame
the U.S. pull-out for the rise of ISIS and other problems, while having no problem with a pull-out from the public school system.
Another issue these two went head-to-head about is the idea of teachers carrying guns at school. Bevin said yes and Conway said no. TEACHERS WITH
GUNS?! Are you kidding me? Luckily (for the safety of schoolchildren), the
majority of Kentucky residents oppose it. Conway suggests only law enforcement on campus should pack heat.
Why would Conservatives jump ship and vote for a Democrat? Could it be a
little problem called the “D.C. Madam” scandal? (Sen. Vitter was named as a
client in the case.) Also, Republican voters are more likely to vote for a Democrat in a local race than in a national one, because they perceive that it’s okay
as long as it’s not adding to the power of the Left in Washington.
Democrat Conway had the fortitude to oppose the White House on an energy
issue, protecting coal in the interest of his state. That’s what I like to see –
elected officials who don’t just stick to the party line.

Woman Killed In Bouquet
Canyon Road Crash Identified
By Chris McCrory
Colleen Linette Brown has been identified as the victim of
a fatal traffic collision on Bouquet Canyon Rd. on Tuesday night.
She was a 33-year-old woman from Saugus, said Lt. Fred Corral with the L.A.
County Coroner’s Investigation Division.
Officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station and the Los Angeles County
Fire Department responded to the single-vehicle collision on Cinema Drive at
about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, said Lt. Derek Sabatini with the SCV Sheriff ’s Station.
Brown was traveling southbound on Bouquet Canyon Road when her vehicle
drifted into the northbound lanes and collided with an unoccupied, parked vehicle,
Sabatini said.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by LACoFD officials, said Sabatini.

Vehicle Strikes Power Pole in Canyon
Country, Causes Power Outage
By Melissa Lampert
The driver of a red sports vehicle reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed
in Canyon Country Tuesday morning lost control of the vehicle and collided
with a power pole, sending live wires across the roadway and leaving some
residents without power, officials said.
Initial reports indicate the vehicle struck a power pole on Soledad Canyon
Road just past the rock quarry east of the 14 freeway around 5:50 a.m.,
sending sparks from live wires across the roadway, said California Highway
Patrol Officer John Lutz.
CHP officials received multiple calls regarding wires being down at the crash
site and responded from the east side of Soledad Canyon Road to close the
roadway in both directions.
Los Angeles County Fire Department officials arrived at the scene at 6:05
a.m. Seven poles were down at the crash site, Fire officials said.

One person was transported to a local hospital by American Medical
Response, a commercial ambulance service. The extent of the person’s
injuries, if any, are unknown at this time.
A total of 161 Southern California Edison customers in the area lost power
at approximately 5:46 a.m., with all but eight customers’ power fully restored
by 8:50 a.m., an Edison official said.
“It was the result of a car hitting the pole on Soledad,” said Robert Villegas,
a Southern California Edison spokesman.
It is not currently known if speed was the cause of the crash, Lutz said.
Soledad Canyon Road was expected to be closed a minimum of six hours
while Southern California Edison crews made repairs on poles and wires.

The More Things Change, the More…
It was 1980 (where were you?) when Jimmy Carter
and Ronald Reagan were entering their last debate.
The race was tight even though things were a mess
here and overseas. Reagan’s closing statement
really hit home that evening, and if one of today’s
Republican candidates was to use the same closing
statement today, it would ring true as a ranting bell!
Ranter’s Note: Reagan’s speech asked listeners about
“four years ago,” but I’m changing it to “seven years”
to better reflect the current situation.
“Are you better off than you were seven years ago? Is it
easier for you to go and buy things in the stores than it was
seven years ago? Is there more or less unemployment in
the country than seven years ago? Is America as respected
throughout the world as it was? Do you feel that our
security is as safe, that we’re as strong as we were seven
years ago? If you answer yes to these questions, I think
your choice is very obvious as to whom you’ll vote for.”
I will add: Has the national debt skyrocketed over the
last seven years? Are there more people on welfare and
food stamps than there were seven years ago? Is the labor
participation rate much lower than it was seven years
ago? Are there more illegal immigrants wreaking havoc
economically, culturally and criminally than there were
seven years ago? Is your health care more expensive with
less quality than it was seven years ago? Have the decisions,
philosophy, executive orders and overall leadership
emanating from the White House had you shaking your
head in disgust and disbelief over the last seven years?
If you answered yes to these questions of mine and
to those of Reagan’s from 35 years ago and you don’t
want the same crap happening in the upcoming
years, then you’d damn well better vote for anyone
other than Hillary or Bernie next year!
What Exactly Do You or Don’t You Like?
I’ve asked Hillary supporters exactly why they think
she would be a good President, and I get: She would
be the first woman president; that would be so cool. She
is really smart and would really help women. I’ve asked
others, what exactly don’t you like about Donald
Trump? He is stupid, his hair looks stupid, and he says
stupid things. What exactly has he said you think is
stupid or that you disagree with? I don’t know, I just
know he would be a horrible President. What is it you
don’t like about Jeb Bush? I don’t want another Bush;
we have had of enough of those. What if he will be as
good a president as he was Governor of Florida?
I don’t know about that, I just know we shouldn’t have
another Bush in the White House. What do you think
about Carly Fiorina? She looks like a mean bitch; she
would be a lousy president. I heard she was a terrible boss
at Hewlett Packard, and the way she did her hair for the
debate was embarrassing. I think Rubio or Cruz would
be an excellent President. No way, Rubio looks like a

little kid and his ears are huge. I heard Cruz is one of those
crazy Tea Party people. What exactly do you disagree
with about the Tea Party? I just know those people are
nuts and not one of them should ever be president.
I’ve embellished here some, but not a lot. These
are the types of answers I’ve gotten from “low
information” types when trying to engage in debating
type conversations. The scary thing is that there are
millions of low information folks who will be voting
with these low information thoughts in mind, and
you know what that can lead to!
Speaking of Ted Cruz:
After going on and off the Donald Trump
bandwagon (although, I would still vote for him in
a heartbeat over a lot of the Republican candidates),
my guy is still Ted Cruz. His performance during the
last debate showed his keen ability to think quickly
on his feet without a teleprompter, or even notes.
Better yet, his conservative views and plans (he is
only one of two senators who have gotten straight
A’s on their conservative voting records) are just what
the doctor ordered to clean up the mess that is now our
nation.
John McCain once called Cruz a “wacko bird” on the
floor of the Senate. Tell me if these thoughts from
Ted Cruz are the stuff wacko birds are made of:
“The President is convinced he can reverse three decades of
Iranian hostility with conciliation, understanding and a
perceived indifference to Iranian atrocities. This is a naïve
worldview – the same liberal credulity espoused by Jimmy
Carter and others, until they are awakened to the folly of
coddling and excusing extremism. Sadly, President Obama
hasn’t learned that lesson.
“Conservatism rejects the wealth-redistribution policies
as a means of upward mobility. Punitive tax policies on
corporations and upper-income families, simply do not
work. Widespread economic redistribution places enormous
burdens on small businesses, kills jobs and rarely helps the
recipients of government hand-outs.
“Free market policies — which produce a robust and
growing small business environment — are the best policies
to lift every American up to prosperity. Conservatives
support lower taxes and a fundamental reform of the tax
code so that it is fairer and simpler. When we lower taxes,
we give more money to entrepreneurs and business owners
to build their businesses and create jobs. We give more
money to heads of households so they can make their own
financial decisions for their children and grandchildren.
“When we reform the tax code, we give more power to
families and less power to accountants and lawyers, who
are enriched by a tax code that only they and their buddies
in Congress can understand.”
I ask you and my liberal friends, if this is
Tea Party wacko bird thinking, what is it about
these philosophies that doesn’t make sense?
Are they not just simple, common sense
reasoning that, if given a chance, will get our
nation back to where it was and should be?
Because true wacko bird thinking is the leftwing way of thinking that ain’t working and
hasn’t worked for many years! Concur??

SCV Acupuncture and Spa
Nov 6 - Nov 12, 2015
Hooray for Holidays
at Canyon Theatre Guild
by Martha Michael
“Remember December’s Magical Embers”
Santa Clarita residents have a new business where they can get holistic
health and beauty treatments. Julia Nally just opened SCV Acupuncture
and Spa on the corner of Bouquet Canyon Road and Plum Canyon in
Saugus, where she offers the services she has been practicing for six years:
massage, acupuncture and reflexology, as well as facials, teeth whitening
and nutritional counseling.
It’s a one-night-only junior cabaret designed to make audience members
recall the joy of holidays past. The “Enchantress” has forgotten her
holiday dreams so, as she brings everyone through a winter wonderland,
children seek “magical embers” to restore her memory. The dinner and
show fundraiser is Friday, December 4: Cash bar at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6
p.m., and show at 7 p.m.
“A Christmas Carol”
Nally can offer a wide range of treatments, because she is both an acupuncturist and an aesthetician. A new Santa Clarita resident, she was previously
practicing privately and moved to Santa Clarita a year ago. Now she is
ready to serve members of the community.
“Your skin is the largest organ, so taking care of it is essential from the
inside out,” says Nally. “We offer holistic spa services using the healthiest
products.”
Rather than getting involved in health insurance paperwork, Nally accepts
payments in the price range of her clients’ deductibles, and accepts Groupon offers also. SCV Acupuncture and Spa is located at 28100 Bouquet
Canyon Road, Suite 206. For more information, call (661) 476-8654 and
find SCV Acupuncture and Spa on Facebook.
If it’s been awhile since you’ve watched Ebenezer Scrooge spend a long
night before Christmas turning from a grumpy curmudgeon to a generous
man, you can catch the Canyon Theatre Guild’s cast this year. If you go
on opening night only, you also get to attend a free wine and champagne
reception at 7 p.m. The show opens on Friday, November 27, 2015 and
runs through Sunday, December 20, 2015. The curtain rises at 8 p.m.
“My Art and Soul”
For an entire month, you will be able to enjoy original art in pastel,
watercolors, acrylics, oil and mosaic by Naomi Young in the Canyon
Theatre Guild Hallway Gallery. There is a free artist reception on Sunday,
November 29 from 5-7 p.m. at CTG, including wine and refreshments,
along with a live musical performance by Manak.

get. He started with Dummy’s high Clubs, but West ruffed the third
round and played another Spade. Dummy ruffed, East over-ruffed
and cashed her high Heart, leaving Declarer with just 9 tricks.

The Home Care Option
for Seniors
Over the next two decades, more than 10,000 baby boomers will retire
each day. Seniors do not need to automatically move into assisted living
or nursing facilities, however. Instead, a growing number of seniors
today prefer to age in place. Home care can be more cost-effective than
a facility, while also maintaining a higher quality of life for seniors
wanting to remain in the comfort of their own homes.
1. Improved Healing
Home care has been found to reduce hospital readmission rates. It can
aid in the healing process when seniors are recovering from surgery,
injury and illness.
2. Retained Independence
Moving into a nursing or assisted living facility means leaving home,
getting rid of possessions, moving into an unfamiliar setting with
strangers, and losing control over day-to-day routines. With home care,
seniors are able to retain their independence and control of familiar
activities.
3. Companionship
Home care is about more than helping with personal care, meals
and chores, it also gives seniors access to companionship and
conversation. A startling number of seniors experience feelings of
loneliness, isolation, and depression, which can lead to serious physical
health problems. Having a caregiver regularly spend time in a senior’s
home can be particularly important if family lives far away.
Wine of the Month
Other ways home care can enrich a senior’s quality of life include:
• Transportation services to help seniors stay connected with
friends and go to community events
• Monitoring chronic medical conditions
• Mobility assistance during exercise or everyday activities
• Nutritious meal preparation

‘School of Rock’ Music School to Open in Valencia
The performance-based music school School of Rock is set to open its
newest California location in Valencia next week.
by Melissa Lampert
CEO Dzana Homan. “We encourage kids to dive head-first into their
musical journeys as they support one another along the way.”
With a grand opening celebration planned for Saturday, Nov. 14, school
officials are inviting the community to visit the Kansas Street location for
an afternoon of live musical performances, a punk rock karaoke for people
of all ages, raffles, free food and giveaways.
The School of Rock music program is different from other music programs
in that it takes the focus off the individual and instead creates a team
dynamic, where students can join and support each other during their
musical journeys.
“The immersive nature of our School of Rock program inspires students
to strive for musical excellence beginning from their very first class,” said
“My children have benefited infinitely since becoming students of the
School of Rock program,” said franchisee Andrew Klein. “I have seen
their confidence soar to all-time highs as they continue to establish
meaningful, lifelong friendships with their peers and excel in their
musical capacities.”
The team-centered atmosphere at School of Rock has led the
franchise to grow to more than 160 schools in nine countries over
the last 15 years.
“Everything at School of Rock, from our equipment to our staff,
is truly authentic,” Homan said. “We are passionate about sharing
our love of rock with our students and look forward to witnessing

Bow-Wows & Meows, Inc.
Helping Save the Lives of Animals, One Pet Fair at a Time
By Melissa Lampert
Since its inception in 2001, the lifesaving nonprofit Bow-Wows & Meows,
Inc. has seen more than 1,900 pets from Los Angeles County shelters and
local rescues adopted out into their “forever” homes.
With a mission to celebrate pets, encourage animal awareness and promote
pet adoption within the SCV community and beyond, Bows-Wows &
Meows’ team of dedicated volunteers host an annual pet fair in Santa Clarita
that draws about 10,000 attendees every year.
“Simply put, there is a very serious
(pet) overpopulation problem,” said
Founder Yvonne Allbee. “There are
too many dogs and cats, puppies and
kittens-- and not enough homes.”
Another impactful choice the public can make is to be responsible pet
owners by having their pets spayed/neutered-- ensuring their pets won’t
have unexpected litters --and microchip and/or ensure their pet is wearing
identification tags in case they become lost.
“It is our intention that our pet fair, along with other animal advocacy
organizations, help to be the educators, the reminders,” Allbee said.
“Animals lives are saved when people can make informed decisions, and
given the opportunity, we believe they will make choices that support
saving an animal. We also believe in
community, and when people with
a common goal come together, they
become unstoppable.”
The Santa Clarita community did come
together at the wildly successful 15th
annual Bow-Wows & Meows Pet Fair
in October to break the organization’s
previous record of 173 adoptions with a
grand total of 200 adoptions in just five
hours.
In fact, almost three million healthy,
adoptable pets are euthanized
every year in shelters across the
nation, creating a dire need for
organizations like Bow-Wows &
Meows.
“The shelters must make room for
the constant influx of these animals,
and the only way to make the room
is by rotating out the animals there.
This makes up that three million,”
Allbee said. “It is a deplorable circle.”
The 15th annual Bow-Wows & Meows Pet Fair at Hart Park.
The solution to this unending cycle? Raising awareness about the problem
and educating the public on what they can do to help.
In addition to the record number of
adoptions, more than 10,000 attendees
also had the opportunity to enjoy free
family-friendly entertainment, browse
more than 70 vendors of pet-related
supplies and services, participate in a raffle, renew
their pet’s license and take advantage of a low-
cost vaccine clinic.
One significant way the public can do their part to reduce the pet
overpopulation problem is simply choosing adoption over buying a pet from
an irresponsible breeder or pet store.
“We want everyone to know the joy of having a pet, of saving a life, of
knowing you made a difference. We do this because we believe in it so
passionately,” Allbee said. “We want to thank our amazing community
of animal lovers, of responsible pet owners and especially those who have
adopted a pet, whether at the pet fair or elsewhere. Thank you!”
“Most people who adopt get to ‘feel’ the difference they made in saving a
life. For every pet that is purchased via pet store or irresponsible breeder, one
more in a shelter dies,” Allbee said. “It’s simple supply and demand—if we
don’t create a demand, or need, for pet stores and irresponsible breeders to
provide puppies and kittens, then the supply will be unnecessary.”
For more information about Bow-Wows & Meows, Inc. or the next Bow-Wows &
Meows Pet Fair set for Sunday, October 9, 2016, go to www.bowwowsandmeows.org
or call 661-297-5961.
Hero of the Week - Laura Chesler
Called one of Bow-Wows & Meows, Inc.’s greatest
assets by Founder Yvonne Allbee, Laura Chesler has
served as a board member and volunteer treasurer for
the nonprofit since 2012.
“Laura is a hero because of her tireless commitment
and contribution to Bow-Wows & Meows,” Allbee
said. “A passionate animal lover and advocate for
helping shelter animals find their forever homes,
Laura is committed to doing what it takes to make
this happen.”
When Chesler isn’t helping plan the organization’s
yearly pet fair, she attends school in pursuit of her
bachelor’s degree and works as an annual giving and
event coordinator at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial
Hospital. To add to her busy schedule, Chesler is also
a freelance writer whose work has been published
nationally in “Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s
Soul” and Dog & Kennel magazine.
By Melissa Lampert
“If something needs to be done, Laura will offer and
Laura will come through—every time,” Allbee said.
“Even with an already jam-packed life of work and
school and caring for her family, Laura will find the
time to get it done, and not just get it done, but do it
with such quality and detail.”
Seen as an invaluable supportive presence to
the nonprofit’s all-volunteer board of directors,
Chesler always meets the challenges that come with
preparing for the Bow-Wows & Meows Pet Fair with
a positive attitude and a smile.
“Laura’s passion and love for Bow-Wows & Meows
is undeniable because the entire room lights up when
she talks or shares about it,” Allbee said. “One can’t
help but feel inspired by Laura. Countless lives have
been saved as a direct result of her being the hero
that she is.”

What Defines The Self-Defense Law?
by Robin Sandoval
Recently, a string of incidents across the country have come to light in which observers who happen to be carrying concealed weapons brandish and fire them at
individuals in the process of committing a crime. One such case, on October 6,
involved a woman outside of a Home Depot in Detroit, Michigan who fired her
weapon at suspected shoplifters as they fled the store. The woman held a valid
concealed weapons permit, but after police investigated, prosecutors decided to
charge her with the crime of recklessly firing a weapon.
In another, more recent incident, a suspected robber of a Chicago bodega was
gunned down by a witness as the robber pointed his weapon at employees. In the
Chicago case, the bystander possessed a valid concealed carry permit and investigators have said that charges “do not appear likely.” So, why did the woman
in Detroit, who didn’t kill anyone, get charged with a crime, while the man in
Chicago appears to get away scot free? Self-Defense.
Self-defense laws vary from state-to-state, but most of them work similar to the
handling of self-defense cases by the State of California. Basically, in California,
being able to use self-defense as a reason for hurting or killing another person
requires a few elements to be present. These elements are:
•
When you committed your crime, you had reason to believe you were
in imminent danger of being killed, seriously injured, or touched
unlawfully.
•
You reasonably believed that the use of immediate force was necessary in order to prevent that danger.
•
You used no more force than was necessary to prevent the danger.
will determine whether or not self-defense will work
as a legal defense. There are only a few circumstances
in California that will allow one person to kill another and claim self-defense.
These circumstances are known as “forcible and atrocious crimes” and include:
murder or manslaughter; being attacked in any way that would cause great
bodily injury; mayhem (maiming someone); and robbery. If someone was to
attempt to commit any of the aforementioned crimes against another, and the
would-be victim killed the attacker, it would be possible for the victim to claim
self-defense.
For less extreme threats, a victim is permitted under law to use less than deadly
force in order to stop someone. Basically, if someone is trying to stab you, and
you shoot them, it’s probably self-defense. If someone pushes you, and you
shoot them, it’s probably murder.
Finally, California’s self-defense law doesn’t just apply to the defense of you, it
also applies to the defense of others. So, if all of the elements mentioned above
apply to another person instead of you, it’s possible to still claim self-defense if
you commit a crime to defend them.

Home Depot Helps Bring Horse Therapy to Ranch
by Martha Michael
When one thinks of veterans, it is rare that horses come to mind, unless it involves a Civil War reenactment or a new book about the Revolution, for instance.
You can be grounded, however, by a practice of returning to the past, back to
nature. That is the idea behind the latest direction taken by Blue Star Ranch.
Equine therapy is a specialized form of building a connection between horses
and those who need an emotional boost, and Blue Star Ranch has chosen to help
heroes who have come off of the battlefield.
The trauma experienced by veterans returning from war is no secret to the
American public. But, effective methods to aid them in emotional recovery, for
the most part, are not widely known.
That’s where Blue Star Ranch comes in. Horse therapy sessions have just begun
with local veterans in need of a new direction in treatment, thanks to the effort
of Nancy Pitchford-Zhe, who operates the ranch with the tagline “Serving our
nation’s veterans.”
“Horses are adept at picking up on our emotions,” said Pitchford-Zhe. “That’s
the environment we need to bring up the emotions. In traditional therapy, (the
veterans) feel boxed in. That hasn’t been too successful.”
Blue Star Ranch is an all-volunteer, non-profit facility using equine-assisted mental health treatment for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. A
member of EAGALA, Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association, only
trained professionals – in the mental health field and equine therapy certified –
work with the veterans at the ranch.
Located on Bouquet Canyon Road, north of Vasquez Canyon Road near LARC
Ranch, Blue Star Ranch is still a work in progress, but its physical setup will be
completed on the most appropriate day of all: Veterans Day, November 11, 2015.
A $10,000 grant from Home Depot has paid for the store’s workers to bring in all
the necessary supplies and finish assembling sheds, removing trees, and everything else Pitchford-Zhe thinks necessary for the needs of the facility.
“There are three members of the team,” said Pitchford-Zhe, “the horse, the
equine specialist, and the mental health specialist, all treating the veteran. They
work with them one-on-one on the ground, not on the horses. The horse helps
with the stress, so they can let things go to the surface … the things that are affecting them right now.”
The men and women are brought to Blue Star Ranch for therapy by individuals
from veteran’s centers in the San Fernando Valley.
“First they come out for a meet and greet with the person from the veteran’s
center. We introduce them to the horse they’re going to work with, so they don’t
come the first day and feel thrown into it. They’re already comfortable with
coming to the ranch,” said Pitchford-Zhe. “We do a demo with the horse. It gives
them some confidence going in. We hope they understand they’re in good
hands.”
The services are all free, said the program founder, which means fundraising is a
big part of the plan. Blue Star Ranch needs to raise $140,000 annually.
“Anybody who’s interested in helping vets and has any skills … we’re looking for
a couple of new board members, people with fundraising experience,” she said.
Everything is free, not just to vets, but also to their families. And Blue Star is
including spouses in a session.
“While they’ve been deployed, they’ve lost communication,” Pitchford-Zhe
explained. “Now the kids are listening to the spouse that wasn’t deployed, and
nobody’s listening to their orders. Having them reconnect with each other and
redevelop those communication skills. Not only are there 22 suicides a day …
there are problems with marriages or they’re already divorced. We want to save
the family, make sure we’re there, make new memories with the kids, better
memories to be made again.”
All the work is just getting started, but as of November 11, the ranch will be fully
ready.
“I’m blown away by Home Depot and their support,” said a grateful PitchfordZhe. “We’re putting up a flagpole and making it so that even when they’ve done
their eight weeks of sessions, they can come here and be with other vets. They
understand each other.”
Blue Star Ranch is located at 29966 Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus. For more
information, contact Nancy Zhe at (661) 312-6184 or visit www.bluestarranch.

Santa Clarita One of 65
to Win Award
The Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award (AEP) is an honor from the National Procurement Institute (NPI), granted to public and
non-profit organizations that achieve high scores in innovation, professionalism, productivity, e-procurement and leadership. One of only 65
cities to receive the award, the City of Santa Clarita has added 2015 to
the four other years the city has earned the honor.
NPI recognized the City for a commitment to purchasing innovation and
leadership, including efficient purchasing policies and practices.
The City of Santa Clarita’s Centralized Purchasing Authority, eProcurement practices, and multiple-criteria bid received high honors and recognition among the award judges. Several other areas were also accredited, including: the City’s Vendor Outreach program; the Purchasing &
Risk Administrator’s participation as a panel member at a local business
symposium; internal customer training programs; the use of electronic
systems for bids, quotes and online surplus auctions; and the City’s employee Procurement Card program.
The Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award is awarded annually and has the distinction of being sponsored by every major procurement association in the nation. For more information about the
Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award, contact the City’s
Purchasing & Risk Administrator, Joe Oerum, at (661) 286-4184 or [email protected].

Networking Online and Offline
to Grow Your Circle of Influence
I received an email from reader Shakira, asking
that I share my thoughts on the importance of
networking to grow your business. She did not
specify whether she was asking about in-person
networking or connecting with others online, so
I will include both of these strategies in today’s
article.
First, take a close look at what is referred to as
your “circle of influence.” These are the people
you are connected with, whether on the internet
or in person, who know exactly what type of business you are involved in and how you serve others with your knowledge and
experience. Hopefully, you have done a good job of cultivating these contacts
since you started your business, but if you’re making a list and still attempting
to write down more than a dozen names or so, this is an area where you can
see improvement.
Many years ago when I was working in real estate, I was amazed at the
people who received referrals regularly from their circles of influence. Even if
they had not seen each other in years, these people were quite loyal in doing
business with someone who had stayed in touch with them. At the time, I
did not understand this strategy, but over time I saw that this was an excellent
way to grow and sustain a successful and lucrative business.
Make a plan for what you can do every day to add more people to the list of
those who will see you as an expert in your field and a trusted adviser to them
and to their connections. This can be done in a variety of ways, and here are
some ideas:
• Attend a local networking meeting in your city regularly
• Join a service organization and get involved in projects
• Make sure your social media profiles mention your business
• Choose a charity that resonates with you and volunteer
• Reach out to people in your neighborhood to let them know what
you do
• Attend or start your own “meet-up” group to share your expertise
Everything I have mentioned here is free of cost, but you may want to set up
a budget for your networking efforts. Thirty-second spots on local radio can
be very worthwhile, as well as having a table or booth at local events where
By Connie Ragen Green
you can give out cards and collect names. These might include pet fairs, holiday boutiques, and other weekend events where large groups of people are
likely to attend and be open to learning more about you and what you have to
offer.
Subscribe to and read your local newspapers and magazines to find out what
is coming up in your area. Even if it sounds like only a remote possibility
of being able to connect with people who could become your prospects and
clients, be open to doing it anyway. One of my clients set up a table at a pet
adoption event and picked up more than a dozen clients this way.
Even though meeting people in person and looking them in the eye is preferable, remember that you can connect with exponentially more people through
online venues. Some ideas for this include blogging, hosting and being a
guest on podcasts and local radio shows, and writing articles, short reports,
and books on your areas of knowledge and expertise. These will all give you
almost instant celebrity status and increase both your credibility and visibility.
Use sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter to let the world know what
you think about important topics related to your business. Over time, this will
make a huge difference in how you are perceived by others in your field, as
well as by new prospects and current clients.
As you can see, this is all about putting yourself out there and getting out of
your comfort zone. Have the willingness to challenge yourself to increase
your circle of influence steadily over time, for best results. Leadership skills
can definitely be learned, and networking with people on a regular basis, both
online and in person will help you to grow your business exponentially for
years to come.
