How to Complete the CITI
Online Tutorial
Guidance for New Users
Please note: Our previous online tutorials were NOT part
of the CITI program. If you have never registered on the
CITI website before, you are a NEW USER.
Click on the link below to get to the
CITI Login and Registration Page

This is the first page
you should see after
clicking on the CITI
link.
If you are a new user (you have
never taken the CITI tutorial

registered on the CITI website
before, you are a NEW USER.
Step 1. Click on the drop-down arrow
– scroll down to North Shore-LIJ
Health System – New York.
Step 2. Click on North
Shore-LIJ Health System –
New York. Please be careful
when you make your
selection. There are other
institutions listed that have
names similar to those within
our System. The only
acceptable choice in this
window is North Shore-LIJ
Health System – New York.
Step 3: Follow instructions for creating
your username and password.
Steps 4: Enter your first and
last name where indicated.
Step 5: Follow instructions
for entering your email
address
After entering your email
address, click “Submit”
Provide information
as indicated.
Click on drop-down
arrow for course
selection. See next slide
for guidance on
choosing which course
you should take.
If you are a new user – (you have
never taken the CITI program
before) you should only click on
one of the first three choices.
Choose the track that best
corresponds to the research in
which you are involved.
Click on Basic
Human Subjects Biomedical if your
research involves the
study of physical
diseases and
conditions, including
detection, cause,
treatment, etc.,
design of methods,
drugs and devices
used to diagnose,
support and maintain
patients during and
after treatment,
cellular and molecular
bases of diseases,
genetics,
immunology, clinical
trials, etc.
Click on Basic Human Subjects –
Biomedical & Social & Behavioral Focus
if your research spans both categories.
Click on Basic
Human Subjects –
Social & Behavioral
Focus if your
research is
behavioral (i.e.,
study of overt
actions; underlying
psychological
processes –
cognition, emotion,
temperament –
motivation, and
biobehavioral
interactions, etc.) or
social (i.e., studies
of sociocultural,
socioeconomic, and
socio-demographic
status; biosocial
interactions, group
interactions, cultural
systems, societal
influences, etc.)
After choosing your
course, complete
the other information
fields and click
“Submit”
Question 1: Follow instructions for choosing your learner group.
Click here if your research
studies physical diseases
and conditions
Click here if your research
involves social and/or
behavioral studies
Click here if you work with
data or lab specimens only.
Click here if you are an NSLIJ
IRB committee member.
Click here if you work for the
NSLIJ OIRB or ORC.
Question 2: New users must select the last choice.
Since you are a new
user (you have
never taken the CITI
program before) you
MUST click here. (If
you click on any of
the choices above,
you will not get
credit for
completing the
CITI program.)
Question 3: These modules are currently optional. If you don’t want to take
them, leave boxes unchecked and click “submit” to continue.
If you would like to register with an additional institution,
see instructions below.
When you get to your Learner’s Menu check to make sure your email address is correct – you
can also click on links to affiliate with another institution, change your username or password and
obtain information about CME/CEU credits. Scroll down to “My Courses” to access modules.
Click on “Enter” to see the list of required modules.
Your list of required modules will depend on your chosen learner group, but will
look very similar to this. As you complete each module, a completion date and
score will automatically be entered.
• You don’t have to finish all the modules in
one sitting. You can go in and out of the
CITI program using the same username
and password with which you registered.
Each time you log on to the program, you
will be directed to your learner menu.
There you can either click on “re-enter” to
return to your required modules, or click
“enter” to access one of the optional
tutorials.
Your completion of all
required modules will be
noted on your Learner’s
Menu. You should print a
copy of your completion
report for your files. You do
NOT have to submit a copy
to the IRB.
You can look at your course completion history and print a copy of your
completion report at any time, by logging into CITI with your username
and password.
Your
Completion
Report should
look like this.
Keep a copy
for your
records.
