What do we mean by marine survival
estimated using Coded-wire tags?
Abundance
(Estimated tags pre-fishery divided by tagged fish released)

Abundance
Survival over time as
assumed in Salmon
production models
Critical topics are timing of events and
severity of mortality (loss of abundance).
?
TIME
Mortality occurs continuously but there are likely
periods of higher mortality rates (critical periods) …
define periods of time and make COHORTS of tagged
fish to directly test for critical period.

“MICRO- TROLLING” Weekends to create tagged groups
1. If mortality is very high immediately after salmon enter the
near-shore, then we should be able to determine differences in
survival rates between groups of fish separated in time.
2. Application of PIT tags to groups of fish produce COHORTS of fish
that only differ in the time spent in near-shore marine waters.
3. To be successful we will need to insert
PIT tags in a few thousand small coho
salmon and we will detect PIT tags during
spawning migration into streams using
remote antennae without handling the fish.
