The Real World: Lincoln High School
STATESMAN | October 27, 2006
This is the true story of 16 classmates picked because of their high test
scores to become a semi-finalist and to find out what happens when one
person outscores another and starts getting reAl!
By Brianna Ellis and Briana Gust
The ’06-’07 school year is back in session
and this fall, millions of high school juniors
across the country prepare for the Preliminary
SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test, otherwise known as PSAT/NMSQT.
Not only does the test prepare the students for
the SAT 1, the PSAT/NMSQT gives the test
taker a chance to receive the National Merit
Scholarship. The test measures math, reading
and writing skills. LHS has 16 students, the
same number as last year, who have achieved
the National Merit Scholarship.
Sarah Swenson
Sarah Swenson is actively involved with oral
interp, drama, tutoring, volunteering, Key Club
and National Honor Society. Over her high school
career she has taken 7 AP classes. Her phobia is dirty
hotel rooms and she has a unique hidden talent of
turning her hands purple. If she could be any color
in a crayon box, she would be tickle-me-pink.
Kyle Powers
Someday hoping to
get a full body cat suit
tattoo, this Bob Saget fan
is involved with debate,
oral interp and Deutsch
Club. Over his high school
career he has taken 6 AP
classes. Also known as
“Hot Sauce,” Powers’ first
kiss was Steffen Docken’s
girlfriend. He collects
huge muscles and would
like to know if you would
be his friend on Facebook.
If Powers could give you
one word of advice, he
would say, “Don’t throw
the baby out with the
bathwater.”
Alan Holdorf
Renugan Raidoo
This National Merit semi-finalist is involved with oral interp, debate, theater, Young
Democrats, French Club, Bio Club, choir and tutoring. Over the course of his high
school career he has taken 7 AP classes. In the shower, he enjoys singing “Sexyback”
by Justin Timberlake. Something not many people know about Renugan is he does
calligraphy and plays the flute.
Janessa Nickell
Elizabeth Wanous
This non-handed pogo stick expert
spends her time in marching band (color
guard), church, choir, National Honor
Society, and First Priority. Over her high
school career she has taken 6 AP classes.
Elizabeth, who does not believe in karma,
says that a smile can make life better. Her
greatest accomplishment was surviving
a year in another country and coming
back to her “home” that had changed
without her.
This National Merit semi-finalist
spends her time in these extracurricular activities: oral interp,
theater, Spanish Club, Ping Pong
Club, Young Democrats, tutoring
and volunteering. She has taken
8 AP classes over her high school
career. When she was a child she
related to Chuckie the most on
the show “Rugrats,” as “That was
definitely my awkward stage,”
said Nickell. She does not have a
favorite celebrity, but hates Paris
Hilton.
Daniel Rainbow
This drum lesson teacher is involved with
drumline, youth group and Phantom Regiment
Drum and Bugle Corps. Over his high school
career he has taken 6 AP classes. As his friends call
him, D.J. Rainbow plans to attend college. Santa
Claus is his favorite celebrity and the greatest
accomplishment he has ever received is playing with
the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps
placing 2nd in the world and 1st in drumline.
Xiang-Yu Chen
This Barnes and Noble
employee is involved with
Ping Pong Club, Math
Club, Chess Club, Young
Democrats, LPEG, volunteer work and National
Honor Society. Chen has
participated in 9 AP classes
over his high school career.
He has a hidden talent of
making amazing egg rolls.
“Chenjamin” plans on attending college after high
school and if you would
like to be his first kiss, call
1-800-261-CHEN.
Ryun Thronson

school career he has

Best Buy. The best advice
he has ever received is “In
this neighborhood, lock
your doors and keep your
windows up,” said by a
cop in Rockford, IL.
A strong believer in karma,
“Goolash” aka Alan, spends
his extra time in Chess Club.
Over his high school career
he has taken 5 AP classes.
Depending on Goolash’s
mood, it takes him from
three to a hundred licks to get
to the center of a lollipop. His
greatest accomplishment has
