LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
W
elcome to the Commerce family! You are about
to embark on an incredible four-year journey
where you will develop both personally and professionally. Best of all, you get to experience all that ComSoc
has to offer. With over 750 unique positions available to
students, I am not exaggerating when I say that there is
something out there for everyone.
You are now a full member of the Queen’s Commerce
Society (ComSoc), the largest and most successful undergraduate business society in the country. Completely student-run, ComSoc strives to support your experience as a
Commerce student, and represents your best interests to
the wider Queen’s community. The Frosh Fair on Saturday,
September 12th is your number one destination to learn all
about how ComSoc can make your time as a Commerce student exactly what you want it to be.
Use this viewbook to navigate everything that ComSoc has
to offer. This book outlines all the different opportunities and
ways to get involved with our 18 external conferences and
competitions, 28 internal committees, 3 businesses, 4 executive purview committees, and ComSoc Assembly. By looking
through this document, you will be better oriented when you
meet the committees at the Frosh Fair.
To get involved with a committee in first-year, you can either attend their events or apply to be on their executive team
as a Frosh Rep. Applications will be online during your first
week of classes, so keep an eye out for those on the ComSoc
website. More information will be available in your first week
and specific questions can be directed our Human Resources
Officer, Ellen Bursey ([email protected]).

ComSoc is governed by an Assembly that meets every second Sunday, which is open for all commerce students to
attend and participate in. Assembly members include elected officials and appointed officials, representing commerce
students of every year. It is at Assembly where decisions
affecting the whole society are made — which makes it an
incredibly interesting and informative way to spend your
Sunday evenings. As a first year student, you can get involved at Assembly in one of three ways: by being hired as
an intern to an Assembly member, by being elected as the
COMM ‘19 President or Lower AMS Rep, or by simply coming out #OnASunday. If you have questions about
elections, contact our Chief Policy and Returning Officer,
Taryn Mason ([email protected]).
For more information about ComSoc, visit www. comsoc.
queensu.ca. Feel free to reach out if you have questions, ideas,
or concerns. We are always looking for ways to improve the
student experience. If you ever feel that there is something
missing in the Commerce Society, or that we could be doing
more to support students, please reach out to our Ombudsperson, Niki Kalgeris ([email protected]).
Class of 2019, its time to put yourself out there, pursue your
interests and make these next four years the best they can
be. Congratulations once again, and welcome to the Queen’s
Commerce Society!
Best wishes,
ANA LOPEZ | President

ASSEMBLY
The
Commerce
Society
Assembly
is
the legislative body in the business undergraduate
student
government.
Its
voting members set the ComSoc policy and
determine how student fees are spent. All Society members are welcome, or in other words,
every Commerce student is free to attend and
participate in Assembly. Each member has the
right to move or second motions, speak for or
against any motions, and in the event of the
Annual General Meeting or a Special General Assembly, they may vote on motions specific to that Assembly. Agendas and minutes of
ComSoc Assembly are posted on the ComSoc
Portal for all Commerce Students to access.
The Speaker of the Assembly is responsible for
facilitating and mediating discussion and debate, and works closely with the ComSoc Executive to create biweekly Assembly agendas.
Members of the Society that are required to sit
on Assembly include, but are not limited to, the
commissioners, elected officials, and officers.
This upcoming year, there are 14 voting members that sit on Assembly. These voting members are elected by the Commerce student body,
with the exception of Year Presidents and the
Upper and Lower AMS Representatives, who are
elected by those classes specifc to their position.
Check out this year’s Assembly dates to see
when we’re meeting next. Help shape your ComSoc by having your voice heard #OnaSunday.

LETTER FROM THE VP INTERNAL
Comm ’19,
C
ongratulations on accepting your offer to Queen’s
Commerce – it’s a bit clichéd but I’ll say it again:
Welcome to the family!
Regardless of the capacity, you will be able to apply yourself in a variety of real-world situations and gain incredibly
practical experience!
Your time at Queen’s Commerce will be marked by incredibly formative experiences both inside and outside the
classroom. You’ll be given just about every opportunity to
explore and delve deeper into the passions and abilities
that brought you here in the first place. A large part of that
exploration process will involve the amazing people you’ll
meet along the way and all the special, impactful ways in
which you’ll be working together. (On that note, please say
hello whenever you’re in Goodes!)
I also want to particularly highlight the numerous committees under the Internal Portfolio that aim to support and
enrich your transition from high school to university. For
example, it is highly likely that you’ve already seen the great
work that High School Liaison (HSL) puts forward to help
you get ready for September. Internal committees such as
QUBE, QSTAT, and BrainTrust provide professional development opportunities, mentor relationships, and academic
tutoring to first years once you get to Kingston. Furthermore, committees like Commerce Kids, the numerous industry associations, and the Outreach Commission provide
opportunities to get involved and informed right from your
first year! It’s definitely worth heading to the Queen’s Commerce Society website to learn more!
The Commerce Society’s Internal Portfolio encompasses
over twenty-five student-run committees that are dedicated
to providing resources to support and enrich your student
experience outside the classroom. You will find opportunities to meaningfully connect with industries that pique your
interests, engage tutoring services and mentorship programs, partake in meaningful philanthropic endeavours,
and, of course, have a plain good time!
At this point, it should be no surprise that a key part of what
makes Queen’s Commerce such a special place is its one-ofa-kind student community. A unique aspect of having so
many organizations run by students is that it creates numerous opportunities for you to get involved — either as a participant in events such as speaker presentations, workshops,
and competitions or as part of a committee’s executive team.
Particularly as a first-year, just about every committee will
hire one or two Frosh Representatives to support their
operations.
If you have any questions regarding the Internal Portfolio
or your time at Queen’s — please do not hesitate to reach
out at [email protected]. Have an amazing
rest of your summer – looking forward to meeting you in
September!
Warm Regards,
VASANTH RANGANATHAN

OMMISSION
Throughout your time in Commerce, you will be
exposed to various industries and career options
that you can pursue upon graduation. The ten associations ratified under the Industry Commission work to expose Commerce students to the
different career paths available to them and teach
them more about each respective field.
During the year, these associations will host several events, including speaker panels, company
visits, and networking sessions, designed to maximize your exposure to the corporate world and
help you better understand the different business sectors so you may determine which is right
for you.
In addition to these year round events, these associations provide full support to students during
the recruiting season through resume workshops
and interview prep sessions that are tailored specifically to their respective business fields.
You are encouraged to check out the different
committees in the Industry Commission at the
Frosh Fair and Industry Associations Night, or
read more about them in this guide. There are
numerous opportunities to become involved
with the associations, so please do not hesitate to
reach out to the co-chairs or us if you would like

Queen’s Commerce Law Association (QCLA) is the first ComSocratified association dedicated to educating business students about

facilitating connections with the Canadian legal community.
Through an engaging series of speakers and interactive workshops
on topics ranging from criminal, corporate, M&A, environmental,
labour and entertainment law, QCLA provides an opportunity for
students to get a glimpse of what it would be like as a professional
in the legal industry. Not only do we provide educational resources
and guidance for those interested in law school and legal careers, but
we also work to expose all Commerce students to the far-reaching
impacts of law and legal processes on virtually all aspects of business.
The Queen’s Commerce Trading Competition is a six month trading

The Queen’s Human Resources Association was created to
establish Human Resources as a viable career path at Queen’s.
It facilitates on-campus recruiting with top firms, provides
informative speakers, offers events to enhance related skills,
and provides career-oriented opportunities to assist students
in achieving their goals. With the Talent Decade rapidly
approaching, it is becoming increasingly important for top
firms to employ high-level strategic thinkers as their Human
Resources managers. The role of Human Resources managers
is no longer simply handling payroll and benefits, but is also
maintaining compliance with legal and employment regulations,
and employing best practices for hiring and retention. Our goal
as an association is to connect high level Human Resources
passionate students with top tier firms looking to acquire the
best possible talent.
The Queen’s Business Review (QBR) is a print and digital publication
managed by a group of 32 undergraduate students from Queen’s
University. Bringing their unique perspective to a range of issues, our

attention of readers far beyond the campus where the publication is
based. Inside QBR, you will find articles on topics including business
strategy, finance, policy, economics, technology, and marketing, as well
as exclusive interviews with industry executives and Queen’s alumni.
In addition to editorial talent, our team includes students who lead
the artistic and graphical elements of production, as well as those who
manage the sales and sponsorship, IT, and linguistic functions. Current

Are you passionate about better evaluating the learning

a mantra you live by? Do you believe in maintaining
strong student-faculty relationships? If so, the StuFAC
team may be the right place for you. The Student-Faculty

aiming to facilitate networking between students and

StuFAC seeks to provide course-related analytics to

Board Meeting, formed in 2003, was founded upon the
guiding principles that no student should be left out
in the cold with their worries and troubles on a Friday
afternoon. Since then, Board Meeting has developed into
an age old tradition where students from all faculties
gather to share fine food, laughs, live entertainment, and
the occasional pint. Hailing from Canteen on Fridays,
Board Meeting is a 19+ event which boasts its very own
branded Mug. The BM Mug occupies a special place in
the hearts of all those who hold it. The Mug not only
provides adequate beverage holding capacity, it brings
a strong spirit and sense of tradition to every sip at BM.
Come and enjoy the Board Meeting Mug.

In order to be successful in a business career, employees need to offer unique value to their firm. The
Professional Development Commission (PDC) offers guidance and direction for students at all levels
of their degree. The services available provide students the support they need to succeed within the
university community and develop the essential
business skills to make the school-career transition.
PDC’s committees allow current students to build
a professional skill set, whether it is interviewing,
networking, technological and other skills that encourage success. Being involved with the PDC’s
committees and events allows students to engage
with alumni, prospective students and other internal and external stakeholders. Though each executive varies in its individual focus, this commission
acts as an important agent to ensure that QSB’s students are the best prepared for the business reality.

The High School Liaison (HSL) committee is an integral part of the
Queen’s Commerce recruitment strategy. The committee has two main
functions that the entirety of the executive works together to accomplish.
The first aim is to promote the Queen’s Commerce program to high
school students, both across Canada and internationally, by representing
Queen’s Commerce at the Ontario University Fair, Fall Preview Days, the
March Break Open House, SOAR, and a high school sendback program.
The second aim is to ease the transition into first year for incoming
students through numerous personal interactions, orientation days, and
the creation and use of various social media platforms. HSL executive
members are incredibly outgoing, confident, passionate about Queen’s
Commerce, and are easily able to speak to both parents and students
through panels and presentations, as well as in a one-on-one setting.
The Queen’s Students Today Alumni Tomorrow
Committee (QSTAT) is a Queen’s Commerce Society
committee that focuses on developing lasting connections
between current students and alumni. QSTAT aims to
strengthen relations between Commerce students and
alumni by offering students valuable networking and
career opportunities, such as Day on Bay, the Alumni

who have collected donations to send their best team to compete against one
another in an action packed weekend. As much as every team plays to win,
the foundation of this tournament is the unanimous goal that every team
engages in: the fight against cancer! Since its inauguration the CCC has raised
over $100,000 and this year our goal is to raise $10,000, which will be used
toward research for a cure and creating a support network for all who have
been affected by the disease. The CCC executive has gained a reputation for
being one of the most spirited and tight-knit groups of hockey-loving students
in Commerce. We are determined to help conquer cancer through the game
we love. We are a passionate, motivated, high-energy team looking for one or
two frosh to contribute to our 2015/2016 team!
Commerce Kids provides children in the Kingston community
with fun, interactive, and supportive activities by sending out
Queen’s Commerce students to volunteer in the classrooms and
playgrounds of local elementary schools. By committing as little
as one hour per week, Commerce students get the opportunity

of life outside of the Queen’s campus, and to gain the intrinsic
satisfaction of knowing they serve as role models for a group
of great kids. Commerce Kids shows the community that

LETTER FROM THE VP EXTERNAL
Hey Class of 2019,
W
elcome to Queen’s Commerce! I’m sure it’s
been a ride for you get here, but I can assure
you it’s well worth it. The next four years of Queen’s
Commerce will include tons of opportunities to
challenge yourself, and have an amazing time within
the program and the Queen’s community as a whole.
First year is an awesome time to get involved and
begin exploring your passions!
The External Portfolio is home to 19 conference and competitions that cover topics like fashion, finance and everything in between! These events run on weekends throughout the year and offer up opportunities to hear from
esteemed speakers. Challenge yourself with fast paced
simulations and case competitions, and network with everyone from upper year students to corporate executives.
Each conference is planned by a different executive team,
who is responsible for all the logistics, sponsorship and
event marketing details. The portfolio also includes 3 student-managed, and operated businesses that offer services
and products to Commerce students and all of Queen’s!
As a first year Commerce student, there are many different
ways to get involved with the External Portfolio. I strongly encourage you to learn a bit about each of the events
(check them out on Facebook, or the ComSoc website,
and visit their booths at the Frosh Fair) to figure out which
ones you would be interested in attending as a delegate or
competitor!
Delegate applications are typically released about a month
or two months in advance, and opportunities are advertised on the Commerce Society Facebook Page as well as
on the specific conference’s social media platforms.
The other way to get involved is through the committee’s
hiring processes – each external committee will hire anywhere from one to three First Year Representatives to join
their executive team.
These positions give you a behind-the-scenes look at all
the hard work that goes into planning and executing some
of Canada’s leading undergraduate student events. The
ComSoc Frosh Fair is a great resource to learn more about
applying for these positions and to network with current
executive teams. ComSoc businesses will also be at Frosh
Fair and hire First Year Representatives to assist with operations.
This year we are excited to welcome two new conferences to
the portfolio – Queen’s Conference on Business and Mining (QCBM) and Queen’s Conference on the Entertainment Industry (QCEI)! I encourage you to get out there
and learn more about these conferences and the many others that make Queen’s Commerce incredibly unique.
Ultimately, the highlight of my first year (and second and
third year for that matter!) was attending and planning
some amazing ComSoc conferences. Whether you know
exactly what industry you see yourself in after graduation, or are still figuring everything out – conferences and
competitions are tremendously valuable and my hope is
that they will be highlights for you too! If you have any
questions about getting involved in the External Portfolio
please do not hesitate to contact me!
Best of Success this Year!

their skills against other students within the university.
The Queen’s Commerce Corporate Competition is one of the most
extensive case competitions in Canada. Our dynamic competition aims
to foster relationships between our talented competitors and valued
partners. In helping shape the next generation of business leaders, Q3C
focuses on developing and honing critical skills through its challenging
events and fast-paced case round twists. Competitors consistently enjoy
their experience with Q3C, having had the opportunity to participate
in a unique style of case competition with twists, as well as meet
company representatives who help them further improve their analysis
and presentation skills. The competition is open to Queen’s Commerce
students as well as external delegates from other top undergraduate
business schools in Canada.
If you’re looking to get a head start in the management consulting
industry, come by our booth at the frosh fair to find out how you can
be a part of creating Q3C 2016.

The New York Times calls the QEC “one of the
longest-running and best-known undergraduate
business plan competitions in the world” and each
year the competition receives numerous business
plan submissions from around the globe. The top
15 teams are selected and invited to Toronto to
present their business plans to a panel of Canadian
business leaders. There are over $60,000 worth of
prizes awarded throughout the final weekend. The
QEC final weekend never fails to foster a vibrant
exchange of ideas, unparalleled innovation, and the
beginnings of new relationships. By joining the QEC
you will have a great opportunity to meet fascinating
competitors and well-connected judges.
The Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.) is
Canada’s oldest and most prestigious case competition –
commanding attention from the world’s most reputable
universities. In its inaugural year in 1978, I.C.B.C. was a
one-day competition hosted for 10 Canadian Universities.
Today, the competition has evolved to include a Preliminary
Round and a Final Round, 8 spectacular competitive
streams, and over 100 universities from around the world.
Since 2008 I.C.B.C. has also hosted the annual Queen’s Case
Competition, an internal case competition welcoming all
Commerce students with any level of experience to compete.
We are looking for two amazing First Year Representatives
to help us with organizing both QCC and the 38th Annual
I.C.B.C. Final Weekend. Contact us to get more information
on how you can become a part of the I.C.B.C. family!

INVOLVED
APPLY
Boasting over 50 committees, there is a position suited for almost everyone’s skills and interests. There will be multiple times throughout
the year to apply for executive positions, starting with Frosh Hiring.
Conference executives will hire a new set of members shorty after their
event, while Internal Committees and Businesses will hire throughout
the month of March.
ATTEND
There is a plethora of events at Queen’s — whether it’s a conference,
competition, social, or networking event. Conferences will enable
you to learn more about a certain topic — sports, fashion, or international business to name a few. Keep an eye on the Commerce Portal
to stay up-to-date with events happening around Queen’s.
VOLUNTEER
Volunteering can give you a feel for different opportunities or allow you
to get involved in ComSoc’s philanthropic initiatives. You can volunteer
at a conference or join one of the Community Activities committees in
local, national, and international initiatives. In addition, volunteering is
a great way to prove to co-chairs that you have an interest in their executive if you decide to apply in the future.
RUN
In September, you can run to be your Year President. The Year President organizes events and represents the year at ComSoc Assembly.
Other elected positions are voted upon in the winter, usually in February during the Commerce Society Elections - the exact timing is determined by the Chief Policy and Returning Officer. For more information
on elections, refer to the next section.

H
OW TO RUN FOR AN
ELECTED POSITION
Each candidate may appoint a campaign team limited to one campaign manager and an unlimited
number of volunteers, given that none of these individuals are running for any other elected position.
To promote themselves, candidates can make a short
write-up to be placed in an official election e-mail
sent out by the Society President in addition to the
opportunity to participate in classroom speeches.
Outside of this, the world is your playground! Acceptable types of promotion include posters, buttons,
brochures, Facebook events, and websites. Methods
of promotion that have not been pre-approved must
be approved by the Chief Policy and Returning Officer, TARYN MASON ([email protected]).
Voting will be done using an electronic voting system managed by the School of Business. A 65% plus
C
one-majority vote of “yes” is required for a successful
individual acclamation.
“
Running for YEAR PRESIDENT is by far
the BEST OPPORTUNITY to participate
in an elected position in first-year.
”
Elections will kick off within the first few weeks of
classes. If successful, you’ll get a chance to cozy up
to ComSoc Assembly, meet upper years, and plan
social events for your year. You also get to represent
your entire class as a voting member at Assembly.
There is also another opportunity to run for the rest
of elected Assembly positions in March Hiring. More
information will be provided on the ComSoc Portal
announcements in February.
ONFERENCE BURSARIES
ComSoc is proud of its long standing tradition of supporting students to achieve their goals and attend worldclass conferences and competitions regardless of their financial situation. The ComSoc Bursary Program is
funded jointly by the Queen’s Commerce Society and the Commerce program. Bursaries are available to any
full-time student, in any year of the program, who would like to attend a conference of competition (whether
internal to Queen’s or hosted by another organization). They’re a great way to save money and learn at the
same time!
For internal conferences and competitions (those
run by a ComSoc committee), the Internal Bursary
reimburses you for the 50% of the total delegate fee.
These bursaries are designed to alleviate financial
burden and allow Commerce students to participate in ComSoc conferences and competitions. As
such, the bursary is awarded based on demonstrated financial need, the desire to attend the conference or competition, extracurricular involvement
in university, and year of study.
For external conferences and competitions (those
hosted by non-ComSoc organizations), the External Subsidy reimburses you for the 50% of the total
costs to attend, up to a maximum of $500. Total
costs include both delegate fees and relevant travel and accommodations expenses. These subsidies
are designed to encourage model Commerce students to attend conferences and competition extracurricular involvement in university, and year
of study. For more information, head to comsoc.
queensu.ca and access the Bursary Portal under
Conferences & Competitions.
