The Elder Conservatorium has been the heart of
musical culture in Adelaide for over 130 years.
While always maintaining the rich heritage and aspirations of the traditional Europeanstyle Conservatorium of its origins, it has grown in size and scope to become a truly
Australian, 21st Century music training institution. The Conservatorium teaches music
performers, creators, educators and researchers across a wide variety of styles and
genres: Classical, Jazz, Opera, Pop, Rock, Choral, Electronica, World and Film Music
to name but a few.
Our performance staff and students have curated for your enjoyment a wonderful
concert series that represents a vibrant sample of the broad world of music we at
the Conservatorium inhabit and cherish every day.
The Elder Hall is the spiritual home of the Conservatorium and the concerts we present
here are the most significant and public expression of our musical mission. We are
delighted to share our music making with you and thank you for the support and
encouragement your attendance at these concerts represents.

Directed by Elizabeth Layton it features some
of the Conservatorium’s finest young talent

Hindemith. Polish composer Kilar’s work
includes over 100 film scores, including music
for Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Dracula’! ECCO
present one of his most popular pieces, ‘Orawa’.

Innovative sounds from the next generation in
the music industry, featuring a tribute to the late
David Bowie and original songs incorporating
string quartet and other forces. Prepare to be
amazed at the extraordinary creativity on display
by the staff and students from the Popular
Music & Creative Technologies department.

Songs and the haunting beauty of Chausson’s

heralds the appearance of Roy Howat’s and

Britten’s ‘Simple Symphony’ (1933) was based
on themes written by the composer before he
was eleven years old! A witty and effervescent
work, it’s preceded by Haydn’s lyrical D major
cello concerto featuring Elder Conservatorium
student Mason Stanton as soloist.

SWITCHED ON BACH
Presented by SONIC ARTS
In the late 1960s synthesiser virtuoso Walter
Carlos released the LP Switched-On Bach. It
became a huge hit, introducing a new audience
to Bach, and an older audience to electronic
music. Join in celebrating this classic album,
and experience the impact of Bach across many
genres of contemporary music. Features a rare
appearance by the Conservatorium’s historic
Moog Synthesiser – the instrument on which the
original Switched-On Bach was created.

The mid-winter tradition continues as the
Australian String Quartet perform some of
Schubert’s most exquisite chamber music
including the deeply moving Death and the
Maiden string quartet.

Concerto features Kyle Fraser as soloist, one
of Adelaide’s most talented young pianists.
Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings is one of
the most beloved and entrancing scores in the
repertoire. Russian folk themes, a glittering
waltz and elegiac melodies - all combine to

Fartach-Naini performs Rodrigo’s evocative
and famous guitar concerto. The program also
