Ashland County is home to many public outdoor recreational
areas including the greatest of the Great Lakes – Lake Superior,
Chequamegon Bay, Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island, and
a large portion of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
Boating
Ashland has a beautiful marina with great access to Lake
Superior. From your boat you can enjoy Chequamegon
Bay, The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and the
many beautiful lighthouses that are located in Ashland
County.
Kate Deering
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
consists of 21 of the 22 Apostle Islands plus a 12-mile
strip of mainland shoreline, and 18 of these islands are
in Ashland County. The islands beckon to explorers
and vacationers who enjoy quiet, sandy beaches, rocky
shorelines with sea caves carved by wind and water,
island lighthouses, historical interpretive areas, wildlife
viewing and wilderness camping. The Apostle Islands
National Lakeshore year ’round headquarters is housed
in a restored brownstone building in Bayfield. Private
sailors, boaters and kayakers can travel around the
archipelago and explore the fantastic sea caves carved
into sandstone cliffs along the islands and the mainland
shoreline.
In 2014, more than 125,000 visitors traveled here to
experience the haunting beauty of the
majestic ice caves
created when brisk
temperatures transform
the sea caves into sparkling cathedrals of Lake
Superior’s frozen water.

Nate Barron
Ashland County offers some of the
finest fishing in the Midwest, home
to over 300 miles of Class ‘A’ Trout
Streams and 85 lakes including the
largest freshwater body in the world
– Lake Superior. A majority of Lake
Superior’s Apostle Islands are located
in the northern part of Ashland
County and offer some of the best
lake trout, brown trout, and salmon
fishing on the Great Lakes.
• Lake Superior’s Chequamegon Bay offers diverse fishery that
attracts anglers yearly from all over the United States. In Fisherman Magazine voted Chequamegon Bay as one of the Top Ten Destinations for smallmouth bass in the world. For smallmouth bass, Chequamegon Bay is primarily a catch and release
fishery and managed for trophy Smallmouth with a
minimum size limit of 22”. The average size smallmouth
is greater than 18” and 50-100 fish days are not uncom-
mon regardless of the time of year. Chequamegon Bay is
also known for trophy walleye, northern pike, perch, trout, salmon and whitefish are the most sought after species on the bay, offering something for all anglers.
• Inland Lakes and Streams offer some excellent fishing for muskies, walleye, bass, northern pike,
perch, panfish, and trout. The streams and rivers flowing into Lake Superior are some of the finest trout and salmon fishing you will find anywhere.
• Ice Fishing Ashland County is a premier ice fishing destination via
our Inland lakes or Lake Superior.
Chequamegon Bay is popular for
a wide variety of fish along with ice
fishing for trophy lake trout in the
Apostle Islands.

Madeline Island is the largest of the 22 Apostle Islands. The Island is 14
miles long and three miles wide with a year-round population of 200.
La Pointe, established in 1834, is the only town on the Island. Madeline
Island is accessible by ferry, private boat or plane. Regular car and passenger ferry service across the 2.5 miles of lake begins in early April with
ice break-up and usually continues through the first week of January.
During the winter, after freeze-up, cars travel back and forth between
the Island and mainland on the “ice road.” At the start and end of the
winter when the ice is not safe for cars, passage is by a propeller-driven

windsled. Winter ice conditions vary with weather. It is advisable to call
ahead for winter crossing conditions (715-747-5400). Madeline Island’s
charm and natural beauty make it the perfect destination for those who
want a true island getaway. Bask in the relaxing beauty of our long, sandy
beaches, walk along beautiful wooded trails, browse our shops, picnic,
bike, canoe, kayak or swim. Our two museums and downtown walking
tour offer fascinating glimpses into the Island’s rich past. You can also enjoy a game of tennis or a round of golf. In addition, the area offers some
of the best sailing and fishing to be found. Dining choices range from
casual to gourmet cuisine. For overnight visitors, a wide variety of lodging is available including motels, B&Bs, condominiums, private cottages
and homes or camping under the stars at the Town or State Park. Both of
the parks are located several miles from downtown La Pointe and require
private transportation to reach. Madeline Island provides the true retreat
and opportunity to “get away from it all” in any season.

Like most southern communities of Ashland County, Glidden
had its origin in the days of the lumber boom. After the logging era ended, it became a thriving center for dairy farmers,
loggers and wood product industries. In addition, touristfriendly residents happily satisfy your recreation and relaxation
needs. This area is the gateway to two major national forests
(Chequamegon and Nicolet) and Ashland County Forest.
Located just north of Glidden is The Northern Continental
Divide. Glidden is known as the Black Bear Capital of Wisconsin. A 1963 gun season record black bear weighing 665
lbs. at 10’7” long is on display downtown. Three Great Wall
murals are dedicated to the men and women of the Glidden
area who served their country in war and peace. Free camping
is available at Marion Park near the Pavilion. Listed on the
National Register of Historic Places, this unique Pavilion and
park is host to numerous special events, including the Labor
Day Weekend Glidden Community Fair – see Annual Events

Clam Lake
The central location in the heart of the Chequamegon-Nicolet
National Forest makes Clam Lake well-situated for year ’round
enjoyment of all the Forest has to offer. The majestic pines and
flowing waters create a wonderful escape from the toils of
everyday life. Fish the many lakes and streams in the area, golf
some of the most scenic golf courses, ski some of Wisconsin’s
finest cross country ski trails, mountain bike the miles of off-road
track, snowmobile right from your front door onto well-groomed
routes, or unwind while patiently waiting for a glimpse of a
browsing elk. The Elk Capital of Wisconsin – in 1995, 25 elk were
reintroduced into the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest in
Clam Lake. As of September 30, 2013, the Clam Lake Herd is
about 175 animals. Elk can be seen in many habitats throughout
their range. Best viewing times are a dawn or dusk. The most
popular viewing period is September and October during the
mating season when the elk are often feeding in the open. Elk
bugling is a special feature of the fall rut usually starting in late
August and running through late September.

Sample Itineraries
Make the most of your visit to Ashland County with these sample travel itineraries!
A day’s respite in Butternut
Discover how the locals appreciate Ashland County. Have a hearty
breakfast at either of the two fine restaurants in the village and
with your appetite well satisfied, head over to the Butternut Area
Historical Museum on Main Street. Built in the 1880s, this building
is jam-packed with artifacts and memorabilia, as well as a gallery of early family
photographs. Don’t miss the garage annex behind the museum that houses an 1870
pumper and a 1920 Model T fire truck. Stroll across the street to the Butternut Feed Store
to view more than 200 deer antler sheds hanging from the ceiling, as well as a large and
unusual collection of wildlife mounts, including the rare cantankerous badger and the
fierce fisher. Grab some snacks for yourself and for the wildlife. Drive around the village
and view the murals painted by a local artist. This will give you an advantage should you
choose to participate in the lucrative and fun annual Mural Treasure Hunt. Stop at the
Village Hall for a road map of the Chequamegon-Nicolet Forest where you will
have the opportunity to see a wide variety of wildlife on the move. Check out
the campsites and plan for a longer stay the next time you want to take a
really relaxing vacation.
A weekend escape to Glidden
Arrive around 5 PM on Friday - Check in at your cabin in the woods.
Go to Green Lantern for Fish Fry Dinner then to Roxy’s Bar and Grill to play
pool and find out what’s happening around town. Back to the cabin for a card
game and the quiet of the woods.
Saturday: Quick breakfast at The Bear Crossing before picking up some bait for a
morning of fishing on Gordon Lake. A beach picnic and swim after lunch then back to
the cabin for a nap. Late afternoon hike in the Chequamegon National Forest looking
for critter tracks. Watch the sun going down at Northern Lure with a pizza and a beer for
dinner, stop in at Bootlegger’s to visit with some new local friends. Bedtime at the cabin
comes early after an active day.
Sunday: Quiet reading and coffee on the cabin porch watching the sun come up
through the woods. Too soon it’s time to pack up and leave. Stop at The Bruin for a
leisurely brunch; check out the Bear Den and murals; trade in my book at the Little
Free Library; and make plans for our country road trip home.
An idyllic 3-day trip to Madeline Island
Day 1: Arrive by ferry and stop to pick up a Visitor Guide with an island map. Head to Big Bay State Park. Park the car and follow
any one of a number of beautiful trails to view the island sea caves,
huge lake boulders, and kids jumping into the icy water. Check out
the beach. Then move on over to the Big Bay Town Park and have a
picnic in the stunning new stone picnic shelter. Look over the lagoon,
or take a walk down the stairs and over the bridge to the boardwalk
along almost two miles of sand beach. Pick up agates and beach glass.
Day 2: On day two, arrange for a kayak adventure, including lunch, with any one of a
number of island outfitters. Have a great day out on the water! Or visit the island’s quaint
shops and numerous galleries and then enjoy a delicious late lunch at Grampa Tony’s.
Sip a cocktail and watch the sunset at the Beach Club.
Day 3: On your last day, start with the Madeline Island Museum and experience more
than 300 years of island history, from Ojibwe lifeways to the fur trade, from missionaries
and loggers to fishing, and more. Be sure to stop in the Museum Store,
carrying books, handmade jewelry, Ojibwe crafts, and other unique
gifts. Then stroll up the block to the Madeline Island Heritage
Center, featuring three, 100-year-old buildings offering a glimpse
of island life from another time. Finish up with a leisurely
dinner at the Pub Restaurant & Wine Bar.
So much to do, so little time!

A scenic getaway to Mellen
Day 1: Located just two miles north of Mellen, Copper Falls
State Park is the main draw for visitors in the Mellen area. There
are two waterfalls in the park, Copper and Brownstone, both
situated on the Bad River. The park’s natural attractions also
include canyons, deep gorges, streams, and a swimming beach.
Visitors will enjoy the picnic area with a log shelter, miles of selfguided nature trails, and family campground. In addition, walk-in and
backpack campsites are available. The scenery is fabulous and the park is open
year-round. Pack a lunch and eat at the picnic grounds, visit the concession stand (open
from Memorial Day to Labor Day) or drive into Mellen and stop at the local restaurant.
Spend a few hours at the Mellen Historical Museum. It is set up to be a
self-guided tour and the history of Mellen is well-depicted. It is located in the restored
City Hall, a Victorian structure listed on the National Register, and is available
daily. Just ask the city employees for a key. Open weekends by appointment.
Day 2: Visit the three other waterfalls in the area – Potato River Falls,
Wren Falls and Morgan Falls – all located within 30 minutes of Mellen. Hikers
will be enthralled by the breathtaking beauty of Morgan Falls, the secondhighest waterfall in the state. This scenic area located about 13 miles west of
Mellen in the Penokee Range also includes St. Peter’s Dome, the highest point in
the entire Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. On a clear day, you can see Lake
Superior and the Apostle Islands 20 miles to the north from the top of the 1,600-foothigh red granite dome. The summit makes a great spot for a picnic after the exertions of
the hike. In addition, the Penokee Scenic Overlook located two miles west of Mellen on
County GG is definitely worth stopping to see. Interpretive wayside exhibits
unfold the colorful history of this ancient mountain range. A few steps up to the
overlook and you can view a portion of the Penokee Mountains – a perfect place to
enjoy the glorious fall colors and the vibrant, varied green hues of summer.
Find yourself next to the water in Ashland
Day 1: Start the day with an energizing breakfast at a local café.
Then head out to kayak or paddle Chequamegon Bay over by Long
Bridge. Glide under the U.S. Highway 2 overpass and through the estuary
area on the south side of the highway. Grab a bite to eat at one of
Ashland’s unique dining establishments and then take a self-guided
Mural Tour while you check out Ashland’s historic downtown
characterized by its extraordinary brownstone buildings. As you
browse the many gift, clothing, sporting and specialty shops,
take the time to view the distinct architectural styles displayed.
For dinner, relax on an outdoor patio with a great meal
and view of the sunset overlooking Chequamegon Bay.
Day 2: Rise early to view the gorgeous sunrise and eat a fulfilling breakfast.
Grab a sack lunch and head to the southern part of Ashland County where you can
hike Morgan Falls and climb to the summit of St. Peter’s Dome. View the stunning falls,
the second highest in the state, and then hike the mile and a half trail up to the top
of the 1600-foot red granite dome. Sit down, relax, and enjoy your lunch while
you view the Penokee Mountains from the highest point in the national forest.
Make your way back to Ashland and stop at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center
on Hwy 2. Check out their exhibits, five-story observation tower and
boardwalk trails behind the center. Order a pizza from one of Ashland’s
wonderful local pizza parlors and pick a spot by Lake Superior to enjoy.
Day 3: Wake up, grab a hearty breakfast, and bike the scenic 10-mile-plus
loop trail around the lakefront in Ashland and back through town along the 5th
Street Corridor. Stop at the artesian well in Prentice Park to fill your water
bottle with cold, clear spring water. After a dinner of
Lake Superior whitefish, take in a movie or play.
