Barbie Woods, 48, and
Marty Woods, 40, of Mesa,
Arizona, passed away on
June 26, 2013. Barbie was
born in Kearny, Arizona
July 3, 2013
Barbie and Marty Woods
on Nov. 16, 1964, the
daughter of the late James
and Shirley (Hodge) Toon.
Marty was born on Oct. 31,
1972 in Globe, Arizona,
Barbie and Marty Woods
the son of Dan and Sylvia
(Estrada) Woods.
Barbie and Marty got
remarried on October 13,
2007 in Gilbert. They
couldn’t stand to be apart
and realized they were
truly meant to be together.
The two were very family
oriented and enjoyed
spending time with their
grandson. Barbie was
always a hostess; she will
be remembered hosting
large Thanksgiving
dinners where she invited
her extended family and
friends to her home.
Together they enjoyed
day trips, photography,
yard sales, and traveling,
especially to San Diego.
Barbie and Marty were
very giving and had big
hearts. There is nothing
they wouldn’t have done
for their family and friends
and they always put others’
needs before themselves.
That idea continued even
to the end, as both Barbie
and Marty were organ
donors and gave one last
gift to those who needed it
the most. Barbie and Marty are
survived by their children,
Stephanie Kraus (Chris)
and Brandon Harmon; and
grandsons, Jacob Kraus
and Baby Boy Kraus due
in September. They are
also survived by Marty’s
parents, Sylvia and Dan
Wood Sr.; Barbie’s sister,
Debra Parra (Pancho);
Marty’s brother, Dan
Woods Jr.; Marty’s
grandparents, Adeline
Estrada; Edith Martindale;
and Bob Woods Sr. (Judy);
nephews, Michael Parra
and Gene Woods; nieces,
Breezy Woods and Tippy
Woods. They are preceded
in death by Barbie’s
parents, James and Shirley
Toon.

handcuffed male subject who
fled from the custody of a
HPD officer. He is wanted for
custodial interference/DV, resisting arrest, escape and theft.
A report was taken and a
citation was issued for disorderly conduct/DV and threatening and intimidating/DV.

Robert ‘Greñas’ Garcia
March 25, 1942 - June 21, 2013
Robert “Greñas” Garcia,
71, passed away Friday,
June 21, 2013. He was
born March 25, 1942, in
Ray, AZ to Lorenzo M. and
Isabel (Granillo) Garcia. While in high school he
played baseball in Sonora,
AZ for a semi-pro league
team named the Sonora
Tigers.
In 1962 he was assigned
to Fort Campbell, KY
to the 101st “Screamin’
Eagles” Airborne Division
while serving in the U.S.
Army as a paratrooper. He married Maria
Ysabela N. Garcia in 1968. He was employed by
Kennecott/ASARCO in
1965, retiring in 2003. He was a kind, loving
man who enjoyed spending
time with family, and had
a passion for music. He
enjoyed taking rides in
the mountain terrain and
spending time outside. In retirement, he enjoyed
learning more about
history and current events.
He would read the morning
paper from front to back
with a coffee in hand. He is survived by his
wife, Maria Ysabela;
brother, Richard Garcia;
children, Danny Garcia,
Joey Garcia, Patsy (Garcia)
Stults, Priscilla (Art)
Padilla, Steve (Stacey)
Garcia; 11 grandchildren,
Paolo, Vanessa, Jenna,
Danielle, Christopher,
Jennifer, Matthew, Alex,
Anthony, Brenden and
Arianna; and eight greatgrandchildren, Gabriel,
Alyssa, Xzavian, Audrina,

Patricia Flores Bachelier
April 12, 1935 - June 19, 2013
Patricia Bachelier,
78, known as “Patsy”
by many of her friends
and family, peacefully
passed away June 19
at Holy Cross Hospital
in Nogales after being
diagnosed with lung
cancer a short two months
ago. She was surrounded
by her children and
grandchildren at her time
of death.
Patsy was born April
12, 1935 to Marina
and Celestino Flores
of Winkelman. After
graduating from Hayden
High School in 1953,
she attended St. Mary’s
School of Nursing in
Tucson. Upon completion,
she worked as a registered
nurse for 51 years. Patsy
enjoyed cooking and the
outdoors. Her family was
her life.
Patsy is survived by
her husband, Marcel G.
Bachelier Jr. and their four
children, Mary Janine of
Tucson, Marcel (Christy),
Paul (Maria Fernanda),
Peter (Nora) of Sierra
Vista; 11 grandchildren;
her sister, Gloied Apodaca
of Oracle; Aunt Mercedes
Gnona from Tucson; and
many nephews and nieces.
She is preceded in death
by her father, Celestino P.
Flores; mother, Monterde
Flores; and her brother,
Celestino Flores Jr.
Her funeral Mass
was Tues., June 25 at
Most Holy Nativity
Church in Rio Rico.

George Calvin Knoell
June 18, 1924 - June 25, 2013
George Calvin Knoell,
89, passed away peacefully
in his favorite recliner on
June 25, 2013. He was born on June
18, 1924 in Anselmo,
Nebraska and raised on
a farm where, at a very
young age, he learned the
value of hard work with his
Dad and three brothers. He
proudly served his country
in the U.S. Army in
Germany after the end of
World War 2.
George married Edna
C Ingraham and together
they raised seven children.
They moved from
Nebraska to Arizona in
1958 and purchased the
Knoell home to raise their
growing family. Edna
died in 1997. George was
a Master Machinist and
really enjoyed building
specialized equipment
and even built his own
motor home from an old
school bus. He passed on
his mechanical skills to
his sons. He retired from
Reliance Electric in 1989. He was a great story
teller, devout Catholic,
super gardener, jack of all
trades and really enjoyed
visiting with family and
friends. He lived with his
companion, Laura Jean
Breneman, in Kearny
Arizona, during the last 15
years. He liked the small
town atmosphere and the
ability to attend Mass
daily. They were able to
take many vacation trips
and the highlight was
their first trip together
to Thailand, Malaysia,
Singapore, Prague,
England and New York. A
later trip to the Vatican in
Rome was also one of their
favorite trips. With the top
down on their convertible
they traveled throughout
the United States visiting
children, relatives and
friends. They liked to
attend high school reunions
and visit old friends in
Nebraska. George was a dearly
loved companion, father,
grandfather, brother and
will be greatly missed by
Laura Jean, family and
friends.
He is survived by his
children, Eddie (Tina),
Gloria, Gifford, Kenny,
Jim, Jerry (Marcie) and
Kathryn Sellers (Michael);
10 grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren;
sisters, Mary Moulton (91),
Vivian Billingsley (90),
and brother Karl Knoell
(84). He was preceded in
death by his wife, parents
and two brothers. Visitation was held
on Monday, July 1, 2013

Trailer fire in Kearny displaces two; Red Cross offers assistance
Kearny Fire Department responded to multiple reports
of a brush fire located in a ravine between the railroad
tracks and homes on Jamestown Circle and Ivanhoe Rd.
in Kearny.
Cause of the fire have not been determined, but
according to witnesses who were watching the initial
flames, the fire roared to life after the train came through
causing a wind like effect and headed for the trailer park.
One trailer was destroyed and another was severely
damaged before the blaze was contained.
Two adults were displaced and the American Red Cross
Grand Canyon Chapter responded to evaluate the needs.
Also on scene was the Hayden Fire Department.

the Tucson Summer Pro
Basketball League (TSPL).
Corey and Carl continue to
graciously give their time
and efforts to the Kearny
school holding a youth
basketball camp.
Asarco and Copper Basin
Railway are corporate
sponsors for this summer
program. Asarco is also
one of the corporate

Summer Pro League in
Tucson. The two-day
event was held on June 24
and 25. Bill Loehr from

1991 before he began his

Bearcats’ Altin Hing earns appointment to U.S. Air Force Prep Academy

Hing was one of a handful
of students included
in U.S. Congressman
Paul Gosar, D.D.S (AZ04) Service Academy
Appointments for the
Class of 2017. Altin was
nominated and appointed
to U.S. Air Force Prep
School.
Hing told the Copper
Basin News in February
that the Prep School is
a 10-month program
he will complete. Upon
successful completion
of the program he will
subsequently be admitted
to the U.S Air Force
Academy.
Congressman Gosar
said in a statement,
“These nominees have
a proven track record
of achievement both
inside and outside of the
classroom. I am confident
they will grow into true
leaders at their respected
academies.”
According to the
statement released by
Congressman Gosar, the
nominees went through
a competitive interview
process with Congressman
Gosar’s review board,
consisting of Gen. Jim
Hunt, Lt. Col. Robert
Leech, Col. John Knotts,
and 1st Lt. Jim Muhr.
The honor of attending a
service academy comes
with an obligation and
commitment to serve
in the military for a
minimum of five years
upon graduation.
Altin was asked by
the Copper Basin News
during an interview in
February if he had a
favorite quote he used as
inspiration or motivation.
He answered with JFK’s
infamous quote, ‘Ask not
what your country can do
for you, but ask what you
can do for your country.’
Altin finished by saying,
“As American citizens we
are given opportunities to
achieve. Once we find the
opportunity it’s up to us to
capitalize on it.”

Blazers (12u) traveled to San
Manuel to play the Panthers.
The Panthers wasted no time
and leaped out to a three-run
lead after the first inning.
The Blazers came back in the

runs. After a confusing top

Pro League (TSPL) is an
NCAA sanctioned league
which allows for the
participation of the area’s
collegiate athletes as well
as the top High School
players. In its opening
season, the TSPL was the
first NCAA sanctioned
league in the country to
include both men and
women players. Based in
Tucson, Arizona the TSPL
is also home to quite a
few NBA players, U of A
alumni and other players
who are currently playing
professionally worldwide.

some of the girls actually
were faster than some of
the boys. Everyone played
well and had a terrific time.
At the end of the
Basketball camp in Kearny
the youth were presented
with awards for specific
abilities and skills. Each
participant received
a water bottle, jersey,
basketball, backpack, a
team picture and individual

the third inning. The Rockets
were able to score two runs
in the bottom of the third
inning, as the game was called
for curfew by the Rockets
coaches, leaving the score
standing 12-11 after three
complete innings.
