EVENT
Convertech Japan
First joint trade show presence by Heliograph companies
The companies of Heliograph Holding came together for their first joint trade
show at Convertech, which took place in Tokyo from April 7 – 9, 2010.
In addition to the engraving machines and laser technologies that the Group
offers, particular emphasis was placed on the latest developments in copper
electroplating (Cu-max). A Cu-max generator was used to demonstrate and
explain innovative Cu-max technology to the Japanese market. The benefits
this new technology offers in terms of quality, process stability and cost savings
were met with great interest from customers.

50 years of electromechanical engraving
In 1959, Dr. Hell introduced industrial-scale gravure form manufacture
Some 50 years ago, Dr. Ing. Rudolf Hell initiated
the first laboratory tests on the electromechanical
engraving of gravure cylinders. Since then, electromechanical engraving has developed into the
leading process for high-quality production of gravure cylinders.
Like no other process, it has repeatedly succeeded
in adapting to changes and to a great diversity of
market requirements in packaging, decorative and
illustration gravure through innovative solutions.
Dr. Ing. Rudolf Hell
* 1901 - † 2002
Awarded the Knight
Commander’s Cross of the
Order of Merit of the Federal
Republic of Germany and
winner of the Gutenberg
Prize.
The following points are crucial to ensure
continued success:
•Fully-developed and tried-and-tested technology
•Rapid availability of the gravure form
at relatively low cost
•Functional features that meet practical needs
•Exceptionally high level of automation
•Excellent reproducibility even for repeat jobs
•Relatively low investment
Electromechanical engraving has played a key role
in the industrial and therefore standardized production of gravure cylinders. The number of HelioKlischograph systems installed throughout the
world, which has now reached over 2,000, provides impressive proof that this is a view shared by
the market.

PROJECT REPORT
Modernization and capacity expansion at Editora Abril
The new K6 systems are en route to Brazil
Editora Abril operates South America‘s largest publication gravure print shop in São Paulo / Brazil. As
part of an investment program for modernizing
the facilities and boosting efficiency, Editora Abril
is equipping this site to take on the challenges of
the future. Having invested in a new Cerutti gravure printing press, the company is now seeking to
modernize its cylinder manufacture.
As a result, Editora Abril has placed an initial order
for two K6 HelioKlischograph systems, which are
currently en route to São Paulo.
In principle, any investment in new
engraving technology needs to meet the
following criteria:
Form data is to be created using the cutting-edge
HELL prepress system comprising Form-Manager,
FormProof and HelioLinkPro / HQH. This system has
already been installed and the workforce trained
in its use. There are also plans to link the system
with the remaining DTG Helio systems in order that
both generations can be supplied with engraving
data reliably and efficiently via the HELL prepress
system.
• Increased process speed
•Improved engraving quality / stability
•Lower production costs for each cylinder
After conducting intensive research and tests, Editora Abril – like many other print shops – found that all
of these key criteria can be reliably met by investing
in the latest K6 technology.
K6 in a new look –
a symbol of the modernization at Editora Abril
Both of these K6 systems are to be used primarily to expand capacities, since six of the present
DTG machines will continue to operate for the time
being.

HelioDisk with TIFF-Link is
the link between graphics
programs and gravure
engraving.
PRODUCT PRESENTATION
TIFF-Link – new function for HelioDisk
The fast track from Photoshop et al. direct to engraving
Graphics programs such as Adobe Illustrator and
Photoshop are becoming increasingly powerful.
Even cylinder layouts are often created in these
environments before being passed on to gravure
engraving as TIFF complete forms. Other source
systems for TIFF complete forms include Artpro,
PackEdge, Nexus and Backstage.
mation such as fast crossfeed information, which
ensures that non-engraved areas are passed over
quickly. Histogram information also allows operators to calculate ink consumption on the press in
advance. And color-on-proofer values enable colored cylinder proofs to be produced from grayscale
TIFFs.
With the launch of TIFF-Link, HELL is now
simplifying the transition from TIFF complete form to engraving.
The new “TIFF-Link” function in HelioDisk analyzes
TIFF complete forms for fast crossfeed information,
histogram data and color-on-proofer values and
enters these in the job ticket. TIFF-Link also adapts
the orientation (rotation, mirroring) of TIFF data to
engraving requirements.
Unlike a dedicated cylinder layout station such as
HelioCom, the aforementioned systems often do
not provide any additional engraving-specific infor-

HD ready is now available for existing HelioFlex systems.
PRODUCT PRESENTATION
High-resolution optics for HelioFlex
HD ready now available
HD ready is the latest option available for HelioFlex.
It uses finer write resolution to optimize the imaging
quality of HELL CtP imagesetters.
The new, high-resolution lens used for HD ready
is of central importance for imaging resolutions
between 2540 and 5080 dpi. This makes it possible
to image much smaller pixels, giving them a far
sharper edge at higher resolutions.
This, in turn, results in advantages with regard to
the structure of screen dots, enabling improved
reproduction quality for images, text and gradations. HD ready is also available for existing HelioFlex systems.
PRODUCT PRESENTATION
Engraving styli prove themselves in practice
Good results using 110° styli on the HelioKlischograph
Sometimes, HELL customers still believe that 110°
engraving styli cannot produce good results on the
HelioKlischograph. This is mostly based on experience with 4 KHz standard engraving systems.
In actual fact, however, 110° engraving styli that
have produced excellent results in practice are now
available for cutting-edge engraving systems such as
the 8 kHz HelioSprint and the 12 kHz HelioSprint III.
A whole range of engraving
styli are available for HelioKlischograph systems.
You can contact the Parts & More team directly
here.
The following 110° engraving styli can
be ordered directly from the HELL
