Silver Lake History - Million Dollar Beach
Silver Lake is approximately 225
acres in size and is spring fed and
drains into the Oconomowoc River
and Battle Creek. Its waters are
considered among the most beautiful
of the lakes in this area.
The beach, that is the centerpiece of
the common areas owned by the
association of condominium unit
owners, has often been referred to as
the Million Dollar Beach because of its
use as a prime recreational and resort
area during the early 1900s through
the 1960s.
The beach was so popular during this
time period that it had its own
streetcar stop when the Interurban
rolled through from Milwaukee and Chicago. The beach itself, which contains a natural sand base, involved various
operations including a toboggan slide, water wheel, boating and bathing.
During its heyday, the Silver Lake Beach enjoyed a colorful history as part of the Big Band Era with popular groups from
Chicago and the Midwest performing weekly to the visitors and local residents attending this popular dance spot. Even a
young man named Danny Kaye found his humble beginnings in the entertainment industry in the dance hall, sweeping the
floors for room and board during the day and honing his talents as an actor and singer to the crowds at night.
The colorful history of Silver Lake will always be chronicled as a highpoint, cherished in the warm memories of those
residents and visitors who came to this area for recreation and adventure. While the memories of the resort may fade with the
passage of time, the initial attraction of the lake and surrounding environs remains.
The development of Vespera at Porticello will begin a new era of the mystic of the Silver Lake Beach. The new Million Dollar
Beach will serve as the private
bathing and sunning area for
the residents of the Vespera
Condominium Development.
Although it will not contain
such attractions as the water
wheel and toboggan slide, it
will provide a very private
beach enjoyed only by a few.
Boat slips are available
separately.
The Million Dollar Beach may
not be as notorious as its
historical counter-part in the
thirties, but the beach will be
every bit as special and unique
which remains the reason for
its timeless attraction.
