A Message From The President
A GREAT REGION NEEDS
GREAT TALENT
he number one economic issue for any region, including Greater Lansing
is TALENT. As our economy has transitioned to more jobs that require
specialized skills and higher levels of education, the ability to find enough
employees to meet the demands of our employers has become a top priority. That
is particularly true for communities like Greater Lansing, which must compete for
talent with larger urban areas often desired by new college graduates.

the Next Ten Awards have recognized
90 young professionals in a diverse group of industry sectors.
It is a source of pride for me personally to have been a part of this great initiative
since the beginning, and to be able to witness a growing legion of young
professionals continue to make their mark not only in their chosen profession, but
also as leaders in the community. One of the benefits of the growing relationship
between GRC and LRCC has been to help integrate 10 Over the Next Ten
honorees into community leadership positions. LRCC currently has three former
award recipients on our board including our 2016 chair, Joe Ford, Tom Stewart
and Brian Gallagher who holds a position that has been dedicated for a GRC
representative. In addition, another 10 Over Ten recipient, Steve Japinga is on the
LRCC staff as our director of government relations.
It is rewarding to witness the development of several other talent initiatives that
further encourage the development of great talent in the region. In 2015, LRCC
created Leadership Lansing, which seeks to help build the next generation of
community leaders. Thirty-five individuals graduated from our first cohort in May.
We expect 40 participants in year two, which begins in October. Lansing 501 was
created to connect interns to the dynamic urban core that is transforming Lansing.
The program recognizes that highlighting the community as a talent destination
invigorates the economy and helps retain qualified professionals in the area. This
month, ATHENA WIN will host the 35th ATHENA Anniversary Celebration
program in Lansing. As the founding organization of ATHENA, we are pleased
to have supported the talented women business and community leaders who have
shaped ATHENA into a global brand.
We must never lose sight of the fact that great talent can live and work wherever
they choose. In order to attract and retain that talent, we must continue building
a great region where people want to live, work, play and raise families. While we
are making tremendous progress in Greater Lansing, there is still work to be done,
which requires us to embrace a unified vision and to work together as a region
towards achieving that vision. Like the Field of Dreams, if we build it, they will
come, and more importantly – they will stay.

of unregulated medical marijuana shops now populating the city. The LRCC has
also been highly engaged in the discussion over CATA’s proposed Bus Rapid Transit
system along the Michigan Avenue corridor. In 2015, the LRCC was directly
responsible for the decision by the Ingham County Board of Commissioners to not
levy all unneeded millages for the Ingham County Health Plan. That move alone
saved taxpayers and businesses in Ingham County $1 million dollars.
Most business people don’t have time to
spend hours sitting through long government
meetings. Which is why our members depend
on the LRCC government relations team to
represent them before local, state and federal
policy makers.
The LRCC also seeks to connect its members to elected officials, often sponsoring
meetings with policy makers from Congressmen Mike Bishop and Dale Kildee, U.S.

“I am appreciative that the Chamber is a watch dog over taxpayer dollars,” said
Ingham County Commissioner Robin Case Naeyaert.
“We do our due diligence to find out how our members feel about key issues and we
take that viewpoint to our elected officials,” said Steve Japinga, LRCC director of
government relations. “You can make a huge difference on public policy discussions
when you can leverage the enormous clout of the entire business community.”
The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee (LRCPAC) has a strong track record in helping identify and elect pro-business candidates
to public office. More than 100 LRC-PAC endorsed candidates have been successful
within the past five years. The LRC-PAC will be involved in local township, county
commission and state legislative races in 2016 and is looking ahead to 2017 when
priorities will include the Lansing Mayoral and Lansing City Council races.
In recent months, LRCC has been active on a number of issues including working
with the City of Lansing towards developing a new ordinance to reduce the number

When a group of people come together with
a unified voice to advocate on behalf of a
particular position, it is easier to get results
than it is for a single individual. That’s
exactly what the Lansing Regional Chamber
of Commerce (LRCC) does on behalf of the
business community in the Greater Lansing
region. The LRCC is your voice in helping
create a business friendly environment that
leads to more jobs and investment — which
leads to a stronger, more vibrant region. The
LRCC government relations department
encourages members to participate in
discussions that help shape policy positions

Matt Resch
Pamela Miklavcic
Leaders from The Davies Project for Mid-Michigan Children and The First Tee
of Mid-Michigan will attend the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce’s
leadership initiative, Leadership Lansing, at no cost this year thanks to a pair of
scholarships provided by Resch Strategies.
Matt Resch, who heads the Lansing-based public relations and public affairs firm,
said the scholarships are being offered for the second year running.
“Given the level of demand for the program
we experienced and the quality of the
scholarship applications we received, we
decided to offer two scholarships this year,”
said Resch, president of Resch Strategies.
“Both organizations are making a difference
in our region and both have leadership that
can benefit from the connections they’ll build
through Leadership Lansing.”
Through the Resch
scholarship program,
we hope to strengthen
non-profit leadership,

Leadership Lansing participants engage in
seven workshops where they are exposed
to key local institutions, industry sectors
and business leaders. The Resch Strategies Leadership Lansing Scholarship was
established last year to help an area non-profit organizations participate in the
program by covering the full cost of tuition.
“Leadership Lansing is dedicated to advancing new skills and connections for the
best and brightest new talent in our community,” Resch said. “Through the Resch
scholarship program, we hope to strengthen non-profit leadership, so organizations

like The Davies Project and The First Tee will be equipped to transform even more
lives than they already do.”
The Davies Project for Mid-Michigan Children, established in 2012, provides local
families with seriously ill children free transportation to area medical appointments.
“Our non-profit is the first of its kind in the country,” said Pamela Miklavcic,
founder and executive director of The Davies Project. “With the tools and resources
available through Leadership Lansing, I’m confident we’ll be able to enhance our
service to families and children and serve as a model for other communities to one
day adopt and emulate.”
The First Tee of Mid-Michigan, a youth mentorship program designed to positively
impact the lives of young people through the game of golf, was established in 2008.
“As a youth non-profit leader, my vision rests in continuing to create opportunities
for positive change and progress in our community,” said Rachel Lubahn, executive
director of The First Tee. “Exposure to and training from the area’s top leaders will
help in our mission, and I am excited for the opportunity this scholarship makes
available.”
The 2015-16 recipient of the Leadership Lansing Scholarship was
Origami Brian Injury Rehabilitation Center and the organizations’s
executive director Tammy Hannah.

FALL ECONOMIC CLUB SERIES KICKS-OFF SEPTEMBER 15
In recent years, the Lansing Economic Club has become the monthly “must-attend”
networking event in the region. Business leaders value the opportunity to not only
hear from other business leaders during the lunch programs, but also enjoy the
ability to make valuable connections with other business and community leaders.
Lansing Economic Club luncheons are also a great opportunity to entertain clients
and staff members.
Several organizations have benefitted
from making their sponsorship of the
Lansing Economic Club luncheons
part of their marketing strategy.
“Being the annual Economic Club sponsor
has dramatically heightened awareness
about our organization and our mission,”
said Jim Robinson, chair of the MidMichigan Business Travel Coalition which
has served as the annual sponsor for the
past several years.

Executives from some of the region’s most recognized names will talk about the
impact that family-owned businesses have on the local economy, when the Lansing
Economic Club kicks off its fall series on September 15. The program will deviate
from the traditional format of a single speaker and instead feature a panel of
noteworthy business leaders at the helm of prominent family businesses. Panelists
include: Keith Granger, Granger; Glenn Granger, Granger Construction; Brig
Sorber, Two Men & A Truck International; and Tom Archipley, Centurion Medical
Products. The panel will be moderated by Jim Schmeider of The Family Business
Consulting Group.
The rest of the fall series will feature traditional year-end programs including the
annual Healthcare Forum in October and the Celebration of Regional Growth
awards in November

INVERVE MARKETING
AND WEB
A few years ago, InVerve
Marketing owner Lisa Smith
attended a presentation by Guy
Kawasaki, the former Chief
Marketing Evangelist for the
Macintosh Division of Apple.
Kawaskai said that “if you have
more money than brains you
should stay with traditional
marketing — but if you have
more brains than money you
should do inbound marketing.”
FOCUS
Since then, she’s believed that’s
an endorsement every marketer
needs to hear.
SEPTEMBER 2016

Lisa Smith
Lisa reflects how inbound and digital have pushed the evolution in marketing
over the 15 years that her company has been doing business. “Fifteen years ago, a
first-time client meeting was all about a logo or a brochure. Then, about eight years
ago, it became about a website that would replace the brochure. Today, the website
conversation is about real growth. InVerve builds websites and marketing programs
that enable the sales team to have astounding lead intelligence, give marketers
metrics and automated communication with visitors after they leave your web
site, and monitor your competitors. Even for the small business market, websites
can drive business growth in ways we never imagined when we were just printing
brochures.”
The ‘secret verve sauce’ after they design a website is the application of inbound
marketing. “Using this methodology, we bring visitors to your website, convert them
to leads, and nurture them into becoming a customer. With a proven marketing
planning process for online lead generation, any business can grow,” says Smith.
Since 2001, InVerve Marketing has been located in Lansing’s Old Town District
and has created and served iconic Michigan-based national brands through inbound
marketing, website development, and creative design services. This small marketing
firm packs a bigger punch that it would appear from the outside. They have worked
with some of their national clients for more than 15 years — and their statewide and
local list is downright surprising.
InVerve offers consulting services by certified professionals who create customized
training experiences for an organization’s team. These services are designed to help
marketers create their digital plan.
InVerve is a gold-certified partner with HubSpot — a widely-used marketing
automations software platform. As one of the first HubSpot partners in Michigan,
InVerve is also the leader of the Lansing Regional HubSpot User Group (HUG),
and sponsors events where area marketers can swap ideas, learn more about inbound
marketing, and socialize with others in the industry. “Helpful is the new sexy”, says
Smith. “We produce the free HUG events to teach marketers about inbound so they
can maximize new digital opportunities. Digital marketing is changing every day,
and has a steep learning curve. The HUG events have proven to be a great way to
grow our network and help the marketing community in Michigan.”

Hundreds of women from throughout the world are gathering in Lansing to celebrate the
past, present and future of ATHENA International during ATHENA Ignite8, the 35th
Anniversary Leadership Conference September 25–27.
As a nod to the past, they’re meeting where it all began: Lansing, where Martha Mayhood
Mertz founded the organization that develops and honors women leaders, inspires them to
achieve their full potential and works to create balance in leadership worldwide.
FOCUS
They’ll also recognize the achievements of women who are making a difference in the
world today:

“Receiving the award was a true blessing. Personally, it was a
motivating experience to continue to support and build local business
relationships and invest in our community. It was an honor to be
recognized among such a great group of young entrepreneurs and
professionals.”
“Professionally, I was able to create new relationships and participate in different
networks that derived from other recipients or supporters of 10 Over the Next Ten.”
Though job creation is an essential ingredient for attracting and retaining
top talent, building a region where talented people want to live, work
and play is equally important. 10 Over Ten recipients agree that Greater
Lansing has much to offer. Among the attributes most often cited as being
the home of the State Capitol, Michigan State University, headquarters to
numerous great companies, high paying jobs and a low cost of living.
Erik Larson
“Lansing has a lot going for it. In many ways, it combines the best aspects
of a big city and a small town,” said Gallagher. “It’s big enough to attract
employers with sophisticated product and service offerings, but it is small
enough for talented young people to rise quickly through the ranks.”
“The network of leaders that the 10 Over the Next Ten awards created has been a
very important resource for my personal and professional development. Many of
the recipients have become close friends of mine and continually push me forward
to achieve what we were all called to achieve.”
“You can really make an impact here,” said Japinga. “You can be part of
transforming the region and make it a better place.”
Kerbuski who works as an account executive for Martin Waymire initially
headed to Chicago after college graduation. She returned and likes to tell
other young people about the advantages of working and living in a smaller
community like Lansing.
Emily Matthews
Though being a 10 Over the Next Ten Award recipient is a great honor,
those chosen for the award agree that along with the recognition comes a
sense of responsibility and accountability to their organizations, the region
and future leaders who follow.
Aaron Matthews
“It is certainly an honor to have my name listed among the others,” said
Gallagher. “The recognition was great, but to me, it has been as much of
a challenge. The award is really more about the impact you’re expected to
have than what you’ve already accomplished.”

“Professionally, the award provided me with significant exposure
within the business community and opened many doors for me. On
a personal level, the award encouraged me to continue to devote time
and resources to bettering our community and, over time, to mentor
the next generation of young leaders.”

The tenth annual 10 Over the Next Ten Awards program will be held
on Thursday, September 27 at the University Club of Michigan State
University. The ten young professionals selected in 2016 will not only join
an impressive roster of great talent, but also join the ranks of those leaders
who are creating a legacy that will define the region for the next generation
and beyond.

“Thank you to the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce
and partners for starting this award to encourage, motivate and
support young professionals in the area. The award is a wonderful
commemoration of efforts to start a career path that includes giving
back and helping to grow a community that is home.”
“Receiving the award was a meaningful celebration and acknowledgement at the
beginning of my career. It amplified that the work I loved doing was acknowledged
by others as having purpose and a positive future direction. Since receiving the
award, I have sought out additional opportunities that allow me to work in public
policy with a focus on contributing to positive changes for others. The award has
served to remind me to be accountable to the community that put faith in me to do
more and be a leader for change.”

“Being selected as an inaugural 10 Over the Next Ten recipient, along
with my husband Aaron O. Matthews that same year, was truly an
honor. On a professional level, the award distinguished me from my
peers and greatly increased my visibility within the community as
someone who was deeply committed to the region. From a personal
perspective, it increased my confidence as an emerging female leader.
My husband and I are both proud to continue to work, live and play in
mid-Michigan.”
“It’s more affordable which means you have more disposable income to do
fun things and enjoy life,” said Kerbuski. “There is a big difference between
Chicago and Lansing.”
“I feel the need to make sure that I am doing my part to pay it forward,”
said Japinga. “How are we all working together to bring up that next
generation of leaders that we mentor?”

for me. Being recognized as a future leader in the Lansing region 10
years ago made me realize that I had a great deal of work to do and
that people were counting on me to make good things happen in the
area. Both professionally and personally, the last 10 years have been

“I’m very thankful that I’ve been able to grow Redhead Design
Studio into a strong and prosperous business over the past 16 years.
But the truth is — it is hard work which is never done. The reality
for any small business is that each year requires just as much hustle
as year one. It requires nonstop commitment, risk, creative thinking,
and determination to accomplish your goals, rather than settle. That is why
being recognized by 10 Over the Next Ten is such a meaningful award. It both
acknowledges that you’ve got it in you to sustain and it offers an expectation to live
up to. Each time we hire and mentor a new grad, or develop a pro bono campaign
for a local non-profit, I feel like I am living up to the responsibility of being a
recipient. It’s an award that inspires you and reminds you that you’re part of a
larger whole.”

“Wow, has it really been 10 years? Just reading that re-energizes me
to keep pursuing my goals with confidence. Because that’s what the
award did for me a decade ago – it gave me a boost of motivation and
self-confidence to go after life. As a young professional I was not only
searching for where I belonged in the business world, but I was also
learning to trust my inner instinct. Winning a prestigious award early in my career
gave me that final nudge to trust my gut and go after life with gusto!”
“This newfound confidence allowed me to take on exciting challenges knowing I
would grow from them. For example, I initiated our work with Spotlight Media
to create the Dart Development Difference Maker and through that discovered a
love for radio broadcasting. I broadened responsibilities within Dart Development
growing into a management role. All while still dedicating time to a passion,
community outreach by serving on the DeWitt Planning Commission and
working with L.E.A.P. These are just a few examples of the work I’ve done since
winning the award. And though the projects may come and go, the confidence
stays with me.”

of their second location in the Greater Lansing region.
The new facility, located at 6131 S. Pennsylvania Ave,
Lansing, was home to the former Bill Snethkamp
dealership and was purchased by the LaFontaine family
on June 1. “It’s a family-run business taken over by a

at the synergy of having two dealerships in Lansing
and saw it as a perfect opportunity.” LaFontaine’s father
Mike started LaFontaine Automotive Group in 1980
in Dearborn and has since expanded to 20 locations in
Michigan. LaFontaine’s presence in Lansing began with
