The American Floral Endowment (AFE) is a nonprofit organization established to
secure contributions for funding research, scholarships and educational grants
relevant to floriculture and environmental horticulture, the results of which will benefit
the industry and the general public.
The success of the floral industry depends on the availability of healthy, long-lasting
flowers and plants. Your tax-deductible donations to AFE help make that possible.
To learn more, visit AFE’s newly designed website at

Chairman’s Message
Dear Industry Friends,
What a pleasure it has been to serve as AFE chairman over the past two years.
My term as chairman comes to a close with this year’s Annual Fundraising
Dinner, and I am honored to share this evening with you.
Over the past 50-plus years, AFE has funded more than $14 million in research
and scholarships in floriculture and environmental horticulture for the benefit
of growers, wholesalers, retailers, allied industry organizations and the
general public.
The past two years have been a real growing period for AFE. With the
guidance of AFE Public Relations Chairman Charles Kremp, the trustees have
led the charge in increasing awareness of AFE within the industry in a fun yet unconventional way. At last year’s
dinner, we unveiled AFE’s “Murder, Sex and Greed” animated awareness video. I am happy to report the video has
since gone on to win multiple awards and done what we as a group set out to do – increase awareness! It pays to be
willing to take risks and think outside of the box.
I know murder, sex and greed are not usually words that come to mind when you think of flowers, but AFE wanted
to take a shocking approach to raising awareness about how its research supports longer lasting flowers and plants
to benefit the entire industry and how its educational efforts promote hands-on experience for future leaders.
Additionally, 12 new named funds have been established since 2011, raising nearly $3 million for AFE. We will
announce five of those new named funds this evening! Named funds are generous ways to show your support of
the industry and leave a lasting mark for years to come. Special thanks to AFE Development Chairman Tom Butler
for his exceptional dedication in helping secure these new named funds.
As you look through this program, I hope you will get an even better idea of AFE’s activities and how far-reaching
your contributions are. Thank you for your continued investment in the future of the industry we love.
Sincerely,
Paul Bachman

Tributes
Living, Memorial and Corporate
Tributes are a special way of
honoring individuals, families
and organizations.
A minimum contribution of
$1,000 is required to establish
a tribute, and additional
contributions to a tribute
can be made in any amount
at any time. The family or
organization is always notified
of contributions.
A complete list of tributes
is available at
www.endowment.org.
Recent Memorial Tributes:
John “Jack” B. Giles
A memorial tribute honoring the late John “Jack” B. Giles of Huddart
Floral Company in Salt Lake City has been established within AFE by his
family. A true believer that flowers help people feel beauty, happiness
and healing, Mr. Giles passed away Feb. 19 at age 84. He got an early
start in the floral industry by helping his father at Huddart Floral
Company, eventually joining him full time after retiring as captain
in the Air Force. He went on to purchase the company and become
prominent in the industry, serving as SAF convention chairman in 1977
and as American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) chairman in 1981-1982. He also served on the FTD
Membership Committee and the FTD President’s Council on Government and Industry Affairs, and his
exceptional achievement in the industry earned him FTD’s John A. Valentine Award.
Edmund “Ed” and Dorothy “Dot” Niklas
Past AFE Trustee David Niklas and wife Zoe established a memorial
tribute honoring David’s late parents. Mr. Niklas, former president of
Clackamas Greenhouses, Inc. in Oregon, was a strong supporter of
AFE through generous donations and as a host of numerous Vic and
Margaret Ball and Mosmiller interns. He was president and general
manager of Clackamas until 1986 and remained chairman for two
decades after. He served as president of the Oregon Flower Growers
Association, board member for the Northwest Florists’ Association
and the Oregon Florist Association and on the SAF advisory board on western air cargo in the 1960s,
with Mrs. Niklas accompanying him on many assignments.

New 2014 Named Funds
The Todd Bachman Memorial Fund
The Pennock Company Fund
Todd Bachman served as chairman
and CEO of Bachman’s before his
untimely death in 2008. Todd was a
past chairman of AFE and was very
active in many state and national
industry organizations. Those who
knew him will always remember
what a great communicator he was
and his outstanding leadership and
devotion to work and family. His
wife and daughters are honored
to carry on his legacy. The Todd Bachman Memorial Fund will
underwrite AFE’s quarterly print and electronic Bulletin.
The Pennock Company was founded in 1882
and is the premier wholesaler serving the
Eastern Seaboard with a full selection of cut
flowers, floral containers and supplies and
specialty items. Today, the Pennock Company
continues to grow, with more than 200
associates in eight locations. Pennock sells
exclusively to retail florists and outlets and
has been a proud supporter of AFE since the
mid-1970s.
The Del Demaree Family Fund
Delmar “Del” Demaree has an unsurpassed commitment to
the floral industry and to the
Endowment, where he served
as chairman in the early 1990s.
As chairman of Syndicate Sales,
Inc., Del has earned the utmost
respect of his peers and colleagues
throughout more than 60 years
in the industry. Del has led many
industry organizations over the
years, notably as SAF president and
as treasurer for the Wholesale Florist
& Florist Supplier Association (WF&FSA). Further, he received the
American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) Award of Merit for his
support and promotion of AIFD’s educational goals and also the
Leland T. Kintzele Distinguished Service Award from WF&FSA. The
Demaree Family has been a generous AFE supporter for decades
and continues their involvement today.
Establishing a named fund is a great
way to show your support and leave
a lasting tribute to the floral industry for years
to come. AFE is grateful to all those who have
created funds through the Endowment. If you
are interested in creating a new named fund,
please contact AFE at (703) 838-5211.

Raising Awareness with “Murder, Sex and Greed” Video
It is no secret that flowers and plants make
people happy. However, AFE and the many
ways it benefits the entire floral industry
are secrets that need to be discovered
by more retailers, wholesalers, growers,
importers and allied organizations. The
Board of Trustees decided to take a
surprising approach to raising awareness
to get noticed.
AFE’s custom animated short video
spotlights how AFE-funded research
supports healthier and longer lasting
flowers and plants.
The award-winning video, accessible at
www.endowment.org/awareness or
by scanning the QR code on this page
with your smartphone, is the primary
communications vehicle for carrying this
message.

American Advertising Award from
the DC Ad Club and a Gold Circle
Award from the American Society of
Association Executives (ASAE).
For more than 50 years, the Endowment’s
work has benefited everyone. The hope
is that the video effectively reinforces all
the good that has been accomplished
thanks to the current donor base, as well as
introduces a new generation of supporters
to AFE.

AFE Research Funding - Benefiting the Entire Industry
Who benefits from a strong floral
industry? The answer is simple: everyone!
Production and post-harvest scientific research projects provide
essential knowledge for a growing and dynamic floricultural
industry. The complex and diverse structure of the industry makes
it difficult for single entities or individuals to support highly
comprehensive research programs.
The Endowment, however, allows all industry representatives,
regardless of size, to contribute to funding continuous floriculture
and horticulture research. Thus, AFE maintains strong, vibrant
floriculture and environmental horticulture industries. AFE
research priorities are focused on all floricultural crops – fresh cut
flowers, fresh cut greens, flowering potted plants, foliage plants
and bedding plants.

AFE Funded Scholarships
Floriculture Scholarships
The Endowment supports the education
and fostering of students entering the
floriculture and horticulture industries by
providing scholarships and educational
opportunities.
AFE annually awards more than 20
scholarships ranging from $500 to $10,000,
this year awarding more than $50,000 in
scholarship funding.

“The AFE scholarship I received was crucial
in supplementing my financial needs. During
the pursuit of my degree in horticulture, I
often didn’t know how I was going to make it
through the next semester financially. Thanks
to organizations like AFE, much of the stress of
college finances was relieved.”

Scholarship Recipient
The scholarship honors the late Paul Ecke Jr.
of Encinitas, Calif., who made indispensable
contributions to the advancement of the
global floriculture industry. Among his
many interests was concern for the future
of floriculture, as influenced by innovative
research and educational programs.
He recognized that creative scientists
and educators are required to lead the
floral industry in the 21st century and
beyond. Thus, the primary objective of
the scholarship is to assist in funding the
education of graduate students (M.S. or
Ph.D.) who will become leading floricultural
scientists and educators.
Each year, one student will receive $5,000
for two consecutive years, providing they
continue to meet requirements. However,
in 2014, two applicants were so impressive,
the Board of Trustees awarded two
scholarships.

Internships – Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders
The Vic and Margaret Ball
Intern Scholarship Program
In 1992, Vic and Margaret Ball made a
generous donation to AFE to establish this
program for students to receive critical
hands-on growing experience away from
home and to help establish successful
future generations of horticulturalists.
AFE supports opportunities focused on
attracting young people to the industry, as
well as educational endeavors to identify
and solve industry needs and challenges.
This year AFE is funding more than $56,000
in internships.
AFE offers two paid internship programs
encouraging students to:
■
■
■
■
Train at the industry’s top facilities
Develop critical skills, potentially
improving employment opportunities
Apply classroom knowledge to real and
practical situations
Get diverse, hands-on paid experience
“This experience has strengthened
my career goals...I also think it
has helped me realize my career
goals are possible with a lot of
hard work and knowledge. My
education has only improved
through this experience.”
Joanna Kusilek
University of Wisconsin-River Falls
Ball internship at Bob’s Market and
Greenhouse
12
Vic and Margaret Ball’s interest in
student training stems from their close
involvement with the DuPage Horticultural
School, for which they provided leadership
and direction. Having observed firsthand
the educational value of work-study, which
served as a cornerstone of that highly
respected program, they established
this internship program to help assure
continuance of practical experience
opportunities.
Vic and Margaret Ball
Internships are available for a period of
three, four or six months.
The Mosmiller Intern
Scholarship Program
Named in honor of the Colonel and Mrs.
Walter E. Mosmiller Jr., this internship is
geared toward equipping students with
real experience working with leaders in
floral retail, wholesale or allied trades.
Internships are available for a period of
10-16 weeks.
Colonel Mosmiller, a past AFE chairman
and a former retail florist in Richmond, Va.,
demonstrated a strong lifelong interest
in professional training and encouraged
young people to pursue careers in
the floral industry. The Endowment
established this program to honor the
Mosmillers and express a meaningful
extension of their industry dedication.
“Before the internship, I was
unaware of all the intense details
that go into an ordinary day at a
florist. I liked the fact that I learned
about so many aspects of the floral
business. I was continuing my
education every step of the way.”

Educational Grants - Building a Stronger Floriculture Industry
The AFE Education Committee annually
reviews and approves funding for
educational programs to promote the
industry. The majority of programs focus
on attracting young people to the industry
or on educational endeavors to identify
and solve industry needs and challenges.
This year, AFE will fund $38,000 in
educational grants, which must provide a
benefit to a broad geographic area and for
a broad industry constituency within the
U.S. AFE is committed to the education of
future leaders of the industry.

2014 • ISSUE TWO
Solutions to Common
Gerbera Concerns
For satisfied floral customers, cut flowers should
have high quality and a long vase life, but bending of the scape (stalk) is a major postharvest issue
that can leave flowers unmarketable and customers unsatisfied. AFE funded researchers from the
University of Florida screened 14 gerbera varieties
for scape bending, flower quality and vase life.
Scape bending of ‘Testarossa’ was eliminated when stems
were supported during hydration (left).
Reducing Scape Bending in the Gerbera Daisy,
Research Report #454 includes the following best
practices to eliminate scape bending:
n
Choose varieties that are less susceptible to
scape bending or that easily recover. (Most
susceptible varieties included Guarda, Fiction,
Pink Elegance, Primrose, Sonata, Teresa and
Testarossa)
n
Avoid storing cut gerbera and never store in
boxes.
n
Unpack immediately, cut stems and place in a
freshly made hydration solution, particularly
one formulated especially for gerbera.
n
Provide physical support to stems while hydrating. They should not touch the bottom of the
container.
Find additional best practices by viewing the full
report online at www.endowment.org, along with

QUARTERLY NEWS FOR ENDOWMENT SUPPORTERS
Two Students Awarded 2014
Paul Ecke Jr. $10,000 Scholarships
Not one, but two
promising students
have been awarded
a 2014 Paul Ecke
Jr. Scholarship.
The merit-based
scholarship honors
the late floriculture
pioneer and is
awarded to M.S. or
Joshua Craver
Emma Lookabaugh
Ph.D. students who
are on track to become exceptional researchers or educators.
Joshua Craver, who will soon earn a graduate degree at Kansas
State University and begin a doctoral program at Purdue University,
and Emma Lookabaugh, a doctoral student at North Carolina State
University, were both awarded the $10,000
scholarship.
“Generally only one Paul Ecke Jr. Scholarship
is awarded each year, but this year AFE made
an exception to award a scholarship to two
remarkable candidates,” said Dwight Larimer,
AFE Education Committee chairman and DESIGN
MASTER color tool, inc. president. “These students
show great promise and will be strong assets to
the industry.”
Paul Ecke Jr.
