From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers
We continue walking together in this season of Lent, a season of penance and
ever-deepening conversion, using Matthew Kelly’s “The Four Signs of a
Dynamic Catholic,” as one of our guides for the journey. Mr. Kelly reminds us
that the journey of conversion is one of incremental steps. We must honestly see
where we are on the journey and set reasonable goals for moving forward,
remembering that “making small daily investments usually leads to large
returns.” At the same time, we ought to actually move. To do that, we must also
have intentionality. People do not just stumble into a vibrant spiritual life. They
actively seek it. Even those already engaged in the spiritual life only move to the
“next level” by actively seeking it, by being invited to it and by being willing to
reach for it. The foundation of this intentional journey of incremental steps is
prayer. When we are spiritually healthy, all the other aspects of our life fall into
place – and even if they do not, we are able to maintain a sense of peace and
balance. Prayer is the first sign of being a dynamic Catholic.
The second sign of being a dynamic Catholic is study. Jesus challenged the
worldview of everyone He encountered. His message went to the core of their humanity and caused them to rethink
their lives in response to it. That challenge, and that genius, continues in His Church. Through the Church, Jesus
continues to call people to holiness, to be, as Mr. Kelly puts it, “a-better-version-of-yourself.” In a relativistic culture,
with little foundation in classic philosophy, many miss the genius of the Church and are closed to its wisdom. The
Venerable Fulton J. Sheen said “There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church,
but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.” Even Catholics usually experience some insecurity when questioned about the teachings of the Church, feeling they do not really know or understand
it much themselves. Often they have lost a connection even to the spiritual wisdom of the Church and raise questions to
which they do not have answers. The beauty is that there really are answers to such questions, even in the midst of
Mystery. Think of the great minds of history who have devoted themselves to philosophy, theology, and spirituality in
the midst of the Church. Engaged Catholics are continuous learners. Mr. Kelly states that, on average, “they spend
fourteen minutes each day learning more about the faith. They see themselves as students of Jesus and His Church, and
they proactively make an effort to allow his teachings to guide and form them.” This can be done through reading and
also through lectures and courses offered to better grow in our understanding of the faith and the rich wisdom of the
Church. It is a sign that ought to be approached incrementally, but also with intentionality.
The third sign of a dynamic Catholic is generosity. God is a Trinity of Persons, continuously giving Love. We are
made in the image and likeness of God, Who is Trinity. We are created as “people for others.” Often, though, we turn
in on ourselves and become alienated from an important aspect of our identity. There is much narcissism and entitlement in our society. The choice to live that way usually leads to isolation, fear, and emptiness. Think of the character
Charles Foster Kane in the classic movie “Citizen Cane.” We were created to live generous lives, to live as “people for
others.” When talking about generosity within the community of the Church, the term usually used is “stewardship,”
which means a giving of one’s time, talent, and treasure. Are you a good steward of the gift of your time in regard to
the Church? Are you a good steward of the gift of your talent in regard to the Church? Are you a good steward of your
treasure in regard to the Church? Do you live generously, as a person for others? Mr. Kelly says, “God invites us to a
life of gratitude while the world fosters discontent. God proposes trust; the world arouses fear. God promotes giving;
the world promotes getting. God invites us to operate with His Providence while the world rallies behind selfdetermination. God appoints us in stewardship while the world touts ownership. The world encourages entitlement,
while in reality everything is a gift from God. God invites us to look out for our neighbor; the world tells us to look out
for ourselves. God operates from abundance; the world from a place of scarcity. God created us out of generosity to
live generous lives; the world encourages us to live a small, selfish life.”
It is the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Our Lenten journey is almost over. We were all invited to enter this season of conversion in the light of Truth, presenting ourselves to the Lord in humility and holiness. How are you doing in your reach
for holiness, in looking at yourself and your journey in the light of Truth, in presenting yourself to the Lord in humility
and opening yourself to be obedient to Him? It is the Fourth Sunday of Lent. How much progress have you made in
deepening conversion since this journey began Ash Wednesday?

Four things make the difference between highly
engaged Catholics and disengaged Catholics:
the Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic.
If you are ready to let God take your spiritual life
to the next level, The Four Signs of a Dynamic
Catholic promises to take you on a journey that
will help you to live out the genius of Catholicism
in your everyday life.
The central idea in this book should change the
way we live our faith and the way we teach our
faith.
