Biological Diversity in Turkey
y Turkey host more than 90.000
species of flora and fauna. These
cover
approximately
9.500
vascular plants, 4.000 lower
plants, 60 to 80.000 invertebrates
and 1.400 vertebrates. Out of
9.500 vascular plant species,
approximately
one-third
are
endemic and three-quarters of all
plant species existing in Europe
also
grow
in
Turkey.
Turkey is rich in fauna as well as
in flora. The large number studies
shows that 460 bird species , 161
mammals species, 141 reptile
species,480 sea fish species and
236 fresh water fish species are
found in Turkey.
Biological Diversity of Turkey
y The wetlands of Turkey has a vital importance for most of the immigrant
birds and it is also the breeding area for most of the water birds. Two main migration routes of Western Paleoarctic
Region are located in Turkey

The “National Park” status in Turkey was given in 1956 based on
the Law No. 6831 on Forests
The first national park; “Yozgat Çamlığı National Park” was
declared in 1958.
The first deer breeding station “Belgrat Geyik Üretme İstasyonu”
was established.
Law No. 2873 on National Parks was issued in 1983
General Directorate of National Parks was established in 1991.

PROJECTS
IN
FOREST ECOSYSTEMS
Biodiversity and natural resources management
(Supported by Global Environment Facility and World Bank)
The Project Objectives:
To establish effective, inter-sectoral, participatory planning and sustainable
management of protected areas and natural resources at four selected
biodiversity conservation demonstration sites,
To build capacity at the national level to facilitate replication of these activities
at priority conservation sites throughout Turkey.
Strengthening of forest protected areas management
(Supported by Global Environment Facility and UNDP)
The Project Objectives:
To enhance coverage and management effectiveness of the Forest Protected
Areas (FPAs) through demonstrating cost-effective approaches for effective
conservation and sustainable resource management at Küre Mountains
National Park ( 9 of 100 hot spots of European Forests are located in
Turkey. Küre Mountains is one of the hot spots )
To take initial steps towards the replication of this model at the remaining
eight forest hot spots.
Protection and Sustainable Development of Natural Resources and
Biodiversity in the Yıldız Mountains in Turkey
(Supported by European Union)
The Project Objectives:
To serve the long term and large scale protection of biodiversity of Yıldız
Mountains (Istranca forest) on the Turkish side of the region by carrying out
inventories and mapping, designing zonation, developing management
plans and implementing management within the established UNESCO Man
and Biosphere Reserve.
