Operator Solutions Guide
A SOLUTIONS PROGRAM FOR THE WIRELESS OPERATOR
Carrier-Ready Devices Based on Intel® PCA
Innovating for Profitable Communications Growth
In today’s communications environment, network operators are feeling
pressure to generate profitable new revenue even as economic conditions
are restraining industry growth. To help operators generate revenue, Intel
is applying its core competencies to provide the following key elements:
•
•
•
Power-saving processors for running wireless applications in
handheld devices
Standards-based building blocks for easy integration, deployment
and scalability
Low costs through high-yield manufacturing of building block products
A robust ecosystem is essential to this effort. By adding carrier grade OS,
middleware and tools to Intel building blocks, Independent Software
Vendors (ISVs) are creating unique solutions to meet operator requirements.
Intel provides the building blocks and services to enable data services on
the wireless client. The Intel® Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel®
PCA) Developer Network provides carriers a comprehensive development
and support environment to increase product viability and reduce
time-to-market.
This guide highlights the rapidly growing community of software vendors
developing carrier-focused solutions based on Intel technology and the
Intel® PCA. Together, Intel and its developer network are working to
advance the next generation of wireless Internet devices as well as the
applications that run on them. We invite you to join us—your participation
will help ensure that the right solutions are available to match your needs.

divided into three principle layers
(Figure 1). This model reflects the
fact that ingredient-layer
technologies such as billing,
provisioning and encryption are
brought together in various
combinations to create e-mail,
Web and other capabilities. In turn,
these capabilities are selectively
combined to create solutions for
specific industry verticals.

Each ingredient may be used to create multiple capabilities, and a particular
capability may be part of multiple solutions. For example, security technologies
are used in a variety of different applications.

Action Engine’s Mobile Services
Framework enables informational,
transactional and enterprise services across wireless data networks.
The framework, comprised of a
client/server software system,
provides an extraordinary user
experience while providing access
to any back-end data source. This
revolutionary solution drives wireless data user adoption rates by
providing relevant content to
customers in an extremely userfriendly manner. The framework
operates on a variety of client
platforms, including Pocket PC
2002 Phone Edition and Pocket
PC 2000, Windows CE,
Smartphone* 2002, Palm OS*,
Windows 98/2000/NT/XP,
Symbian, and J2ME*. Action
Engine licenses the framework to
major wireless carriers and
enterprises as a platform for
development, delivery and maintenance of wireless applications
and utilities. Licensees include
mmO2* (formerly BT* Wireless),
Casio* Computer Ltd., and Carrier
Devices* Ltd.
The M-1 Server has been built in
Java to run on any Java supporting platform. Applications running
on the M-1 platform do not need
any wireless-specific coding. There
is no need to worry about
protocols and mark-up languages.
M-1 Server supports all mobile
devices from Java, handling all
the interaction from back-end
systems to all the devices on the
mobile frontier. Its support for
disconnected applications, such
as J2ME and Java, optimizes the
transaction possibilities of both
the server processing capabilities
and the limitations in wireless
network connectivity and
coverage.

M-1 Mobile Application Server
seamlessly integrates with existing
infrastructure and supports rapid
development of robust write-once,

J2EE mobile applications. M-1
Server solves all the complexities
of the wireless environment in
one, complete application server.
It optimizes the user experience
on all mobile devices, overcoming
their restricted capabilities, and
solves the limitations of wireless
networks through elegant software.
Appear Networks is pioneering
automatic delivery of stand-alone
applications in wireless networks.
The Appear Provisioning Server
runs on any Java-enabled smart
phone or PDA, as well as on any
IP based network, whether it is
802.11b, a, Bluetooth, GPRS or
UMTS. Appear Networks’ patent
pending Click and Run* technology
is revolutionizing the way software
is distributed over the air. The Intel
PCA speeds development and
deployment of wireless Internet
devices and applications by
decoupling the applications subsystem from the communication
subsystem. With a growing
number of third party applications
via this approach, the challenge
of distributing these applications
is unveiled. As an Intel PCA
Developer Network member,
Appear Networks offers Appear
Provisioning Server as a solution
to this challenge. By pre-installing
a small client component into the
wireless device before it is sold to
subscribers, carriers can make a
wide range of applications available for end-users with a single
click. When subscribers activate
the client component, new icons
representing available applications
appear on the device. The user
can pay, download, install and run
any application with a single click.
Blueice* Research
INGREDIENT
Blueice Research, a Stockholmbased company built on many
years of security knowledge in
general and PKI in particular, has
developed Multipass* to ensure
that mobile online services can be
deployed with the same degree of
trust expected in the physical
world. Multipass is a true multichannel security solution, which
allows a service to secure all data
access independently of the type
of access terminal used by the
customer. The root of the solution
is strong industry-standard Public
Key Technology (PKT), which
ensures interoperability with other
security and authorization solutions.
The Multipass Client is a lightweight client-side component
installed on the access terminal,
handling all complexity of using
the security solution and reducing
interaction to an absolute minimum
for the end-user. Close integration
of low-level cryptographic calculations optimized for Intel PCA
architectures makes the overhead
negligible. The carrier or content
provider uses a corresponding
Multipass Server for user identification, data integrity or other
security functions when communicating with customers. The
Multipass Server can be scaled to
very large volumes through a distributed architecture of internally
load-balancing servers.

Synchrologic’s mobile infrastructure
solutions create competitive
advantage by increasing mobile
worker productivity and decreasing
total cost of ownership of mobile
devices. The company’s flagship
product, Synchrologic Mobile
Suite, mobilizes enterprise email
and applications, automates the
delivery of documents and Web
sites, and provides mobile systems
management tools—for laptops,
handhelds, and smart phones.
Synchrologic pioneered the
concept of mobile infrastructure
software designed to give mobile
workers access to the information
they need—wherever and
whenever they need it. System
administrators benefit from a
central administrative console for
securely managing mobile devices
and the information they receive.
For carriers, Synchrologic solutions
help increase Average Revenue
Per User (ARPU) and decrease
churn by delivering email and
other data that business users
need to manage their busy lives.
Through its server-based, enterprise software that ties into the
corporate network, Synchrologic
provides information in a useful
and efficient manner so that
corporate users stay connected
wirelessly to the home office.

Wedgetail Communications,
a global developer of security
solutions for network devices,
recently announced the release
of its Java Cryptographic and
Security Implementation (JCSI) 2.2
security software suite. First
released in 1999, JCSI continues
to lead the Java Security
Implementation market in
performance and functionality.
JCSI 2.2 provides all the necessary
functionality for certificate handling,
directory support, cryptographic
key generation and storage, and
certificate revocation checking. In
addition to using JCSI 2.2 in new
applications, developers can
integrate the software into older
applications with password-based
systems that do not provide cryptographic security. At the core of
the JCSI product family are the
JCSI Base and JCSI Provider
components, providing the cryptographic and certificate engines.
