Heathfield Chamber Chairman’s Letter
Dear Reader
Spring is on its way and regular Heathfield events such as the Heffle Fair and the Heathfield
Show are coming up soon.
The Chamber has been reviewing its meetings and we are going to introduce a number of new
events for 2015. Our popular breakfast meetings will continue and take place on the third Tuesday of the month: 17 March, 21 April and 19 May. As usual the meetings will run from 7.00 8.30am leaving plenty of time to be at work by 9.00am. Bookings in advance please.
Our first new event is an early evening networking meeting which will enable people to come
straight from work. The first event takes place on Wednesday 4 March at Cross in Hand Inn from
6.00 - 7.30pm. For the bargain price of £10 members and £12 non-members will have a glass
of wine or beer and a buffet. During the meeting there will be a chance to network with other
guests. Clyde Young will also be talking about the opportunities provided by the change in the
pension’s legislation which is effective from the 6 April. Places must be booked in advance and
we hope to run this event on a regular basis.
Our second new event is a Cappuccino Connection. This is an informal networking session to
take place 11.00am - 12noon on the last Friday of the month at a cafe in Heathfield High Street.
The first meeting is scheduled for Friday 27 March (venue to be confirmed). The meetings are
free; just turn up, buy a coffee and network. As a special introductory offer your coffee at the first
meeting will be FREE.
Clyde Young has organised our first Golf Day taking place on Thursday 4 June at Wellshurst Golf
Club which will run from 8.00am - 2.30pm; starting with a bacon bap, 18 holes of golf and ending with lunch in the Club House. This event is open to everyone so please don’t be put off if
you are a beginner or have never played before. It is also a great networking opportunity. The
cost of the day will be £35 and please book in plenty of time as places are limited.
Our meetings are open to members as well as non members. Please do take the opportunity to
come and find out what Heathfield Chamber can offer you. For further information and to make
bookings please visit www.heathfieldchamber.co.uk.
The Chamber’s new membership year starts from the 1 April and annual membership has been
kept at the very competitive price of £50.00 for one more year. Membership entitles you to discounts at all Chamber events and active members of the Chamber will cover the full cost of
membership during the year. If you would like to join our thriving business group, membership
forms can be downloaded from our website.
We welcome your feedback on the contents of this publication, therefore please forward any
comments you may have by email to: [email protected].
Heathfield First is designed and distributed on behalf of the Chamber to provide a forum for both
business and community news. It is produced three times a year in March, July and November
and is delivered to 12,000 homes and businesses in Heathfield and the surrounding areas. It is
also available on-line at www.heathfieldchamber.co.uk and www.heathfield.net. Please help us

Chequer Trees Cattery in Waldron has been
in business for nearly a decade. In 2014 it was
shortlisted for the Pet Industry Federation Kennel or Cattery of the Year, one of just five establishments nationally. Using the knowledge
gained from boarding many different cats over
the years, Jenny, the owner, has now added a
new service from the Cattery - a selection of
essential cat items that cats will love and will
help them stay healthy. These are supplied by
a range of smaller manufacturers. These will
be available by order, for delivery or collection
from the Cattery. For more information contact

Heathfield Silver Band
Heathfield Silver Band returned to rehearsal
after the Christmas break full of enthusiasm
with many new pieces of music. This is the
time of year where we have little in the way of
engagements, these begin in the spring into
summer, so we just enjoy ourselves playing
and building up our playlist for this year’s gigs.
We are always looking for people to join us so
if you feel up for the challenge of doing something new why not come along on a Tuesday
night. Being part of the Band is great in so
many ways, a new skill being learnt, new
friends and new experiences. Of course, experienced players are also welcome, please
do get in touch or come along to the bandroom
in Alexandra Road on a Tuesday evening from
7.15pm.
The Band is available for all kinds of events in
and around Heathfield, don’t think that your
celebration is too small. Please see our website www.heathfieldsilverband.org

The Heathfield Partnership
The Heathfield Partnership is now 20 years old
and has been involved in many projects; some
of those being the high street improvements
(pavement, disabled access, street furniture,
flower baskets, Christmas Lights), providing
signage, installing Public Information Points
and information boards in the town and launching www.heathfield.net website for the whole
community. Below are the projects we are
currently involved in:
Sports and Leisure Committee
We are embarking on a new fundraising strategy and at the same time renewing our planning permission for the swimming pool and
leisure facility. The Olympic relocatable pool is
still available to us but we need to move on
with our capital fundraising.
ICT Committee
The website is now tablet and mobile compliant and has been updated generally. We are
recording just over 6,500 hits a month which is
proving its value to the whole community. The
target is 7,000 hits a month. A photography
competition was run at Heathfield Community
College and three winners received their prizes
on the 11 February.
Transport Committee
The “Youth Express” is continuing with providing one-off trips for Youth Centre members to
attend local venues and events and also
Heathfield Works! use this service. Strong liaison is being made to ensure the commercial
bus services for Heathfield are retained.
Inward Investment Committee
Alternative sites are being looked at to house
6
the Heathfield Enterprise Centre which had
been scheduled for the then vacant offices at
Goldsmith and Allcorn, Station Road; this will
now become the new Waitrose in the town.
Police Local Action Team
The local committee made up of representatives of the whole parish community continues
to liaise with our Heathfield area Police team to
ensure all needs of the community, business
and residential, are being met. A new investment in a fifth camera is being investigated
with sponsorship on offer ahead of commencement.
Farmers Market
The market continues to be successful. The
market is held every third Saturday in the
month in The Co-Op Supermarket car park,
Heathfield, between 9.00am and 12.30pm.
We are seeking to set up a new social media
service to inform people of what is on offer at
the market.
Heathfield Works!
The fourteenth cohort started on 12 January
and graduates on the 20 March with cohort fifteen starting on the 7 April. We still have wonderful support from the Parish Council and the
business community. We are seeking funding
now for 2015/16 to cover the total cost of the
project.

Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council
You have probably by now received your
Council Tax demand and hopefully you will be
pleased to note that the Parish Council Precept has decreased slightly. It is always a difficult task to maintain the various
responsibilities of the Council whilst supporting the aims and objectives of the local community, groups and organisations.
With East Sussex County Council and
Wealden District Council facing on-going
budget cuts, if some services are to continue
or even be improved, responsibility could pass
to the Parish Council which will have implications for future Precepts.
In order to find out what is important to our
parishioners, a Community Survey will shortly
be delivered to all households in the parish.
This is a simple one page questionnaire and
the Parish Council would strongly urge you to
participate in the survey, which will help us understand your priorities and plan for the future.
If more than one person in your household
wishes to fill it in, additional copies are available from the office and it is also available via
the website – www.hwpc.org.uk and on our
Facebook page.
As part of efforts to improve road safety along
Little London Road, wheelie bin stickers have
been issued to residents of the road and we
hope it will remind motorists to keep to the 40
mph speed limit.
The Parish Council is part of an initiative (with
Wealden District Council Ward Members) to
provide community defibrillators in the rural
parts of the parish, initially Punnetts Town and
Broad Oak. Eventually it is hoped that they will
be placed in all the rural areas to help save the
lives of people who have suffered a cardiac arrest. An important aspect of the project is to
ensure that as many local people as possible
receive appropriate training and courses will
be arranged in the near future.
You may already have visited the Parish Council offices and be aware of the range of information available. The possibility of improving
and enhancing this service into a “community
hub” is currently being investigated and it is
hoped that as well as providing information on
services provided by the County, District and
Parish Council, voluntary services will also be
represented so that volunteers and voluntary
organisations can be brought together in a
central location.

Do You Play Bridge?
Woodstock Fires - Come into our showroom
and enjoy the warmth of a real fire. We have
4 stoves which we can light (generally not all
going at the same time…) See and feel the
heat that only a real fire can give. We usually
have around 30 or more stoves on display and
we also have Esse and Rayburn cookers;
which will not only keep the kitchen warm and
cook your dinner to perfection but can also (if
wished) heat the whole house. You will also
find a large selection of cookware to browse
through as well as accessories such as log baskets, fireguards, fire tools, and wood, kindling
and firelighters. Much of this can be ordered
from our website if preferred. Occasionally we
have offers and second hand stoves as well.
One of the best investments I ever made was to
learn Bridge I could play Whist already and so
had some card sense, but needed to understand basic bidding skills, so enrolled for lessons. I quickly realised what a lot of fun it was.
It is a game that requires thinking skills and so
keeps the grey cells ticking over. It also introduced me to a whole new social group of people. I play “kitchen” bridge with friends but I
also play at local duplicate bridge clubs. Cross
in Hand Duplicate Bridge Club is my local EBU
affiliated club of choice. It meets on a Wednesday evening (6.45pm for 7.00pm) at Punnetts
Town Village Hall. Please ring Pat on 01435

Heathfield Show - Saturday 23 May 2015
NEW SHOW PRESIDENT AND CHILDREN GO FREE IN 2015
The Heathfield Show, now in its 68th year, is pleased to be able to announce the appointment
of a new President for the 2015 Show. Jeremy Courtney has been dairy farming at Crouch’s
Farm in East Hoathly for over 50 years. Along with other business interests, Jeremy is very active in the agricultural world, including the Plumpton College Charitable Foundation and the
South of England Society. He has a passion for education, particularly the young, where quite
rightly he sees the future lies for agriculture in the United Kingdom.
Our new President plans to assist the Show in promoting the event across the region thus ensuring that our rural economy benefits to the maximum from the shop window that the Show
provides to all our local businesses.
The new Show Chairman, Graham Mosey, is also proud to announce that children under the age
of 16 will not have to pay to attend the Heathfield Show in 2015 if they are accompanied by a
full paying adult. This decision has been greeted with much excitement by all connected with
the Show. To quote a much used, but very apt phrase, children are the future generation and
we are looking to them to carry the banner of agriculture forward. Our aim, by offering entry into
the show free of charge to them, is to encourage the young to be interested in our region and
be proud of what we represent. By including them in the Show we hope to be able to achieve
this long term objective.
Tickets will be available for purchase on line at discounted rates pre-Show day from the 1 April.
Adults: £13.50, Concessions £13.00. Tickets will also be available direct from the Show office
or from local outlets. Please call our Show Secretary, Nicola Magill, for more information: 01435
864587, [email protected] or go to www.heathfieldshow.org.

Punnetts Town Village Hall
We are able to offer excellent facilities for a variety of social functions, such as family gatherings
and private dinners. Regular users include Bridge Clubs and Play Groups. The main hall, with
kitchen adjoining, can accommodate up to 120 seated people and has proved particularly popular for Wedding Receptions; the small hall is used for committee meetings, etc. In addition,
there are changing rooms and showers for teams using the playing field. Access is from Battle
Road, at the western end of the village, and there is plenty of car parking.
More information is available on the Punnetts Town website, www.punnettstown.org, or you can
email [email protected]
To make a booking, please contact Maggie Lambert-Gorwyn on 01435 830645.
Broad Oak Village Hall
The Village Hall continues to be very busy and
is the focal point of the community. Broad Oak
Pre-school is based here and other regular
groups include Zumba classes, Tae Kwon Do,
Table Tennis, Short Mat Bowls, Yoga and Ballet classes .
We are proving to be a very popular venue;
everything from children’s parties to wedding
receptions and several groups use the hall
every year for their events. Our bookings are
yet again increasing and we are very pleased
to hear that we are being recommended as a
great venue by many who use the hall.
We will be holding a fund raising Music Night
on Saturday 21 March with various acts and
refreshments to raise funds for the Village Hall
which is in need of some maintenance over the
coming months. All are welcome to join us for
this event (please use the contact details
below for further information).
The hall is very spacious and light. We have
disabled access and toilets and ample car
parking. We also have the benefit of the play
park adjacent to the hall.
The hall is also available to hire for private
functions and parties. For further information
contact Helen Swan on 07766 738481 or [email protected]
Heathfield and Waldron Twinning Association
We are looking forward to another year of contacts with our friends in Forges-les-Eaux. As usual
I expect that there will be visits each way and, of course, the opportunity of having stalls at Le
Marché on the 31 August.
We are delighted that Heathfield Choral Society will again be crossing the channel for a choral
event in Normandy at the end of June. Although no longer an activity run by the Twinning Association we remain supportive of this link and proud that the original introduction was made by
us.
As usual we shall be holding Soirées Françaises at intervals throughout the year. This is an opportunity to speak French, regardless of level, in an informal atmosphere, lubricated by refreshments. As usual I am sure that we shall be holding a fundraising event and there will be other
opportunities to meet which will be publicised to members.
New members of the Association are always welcome and anyone interested in this, or in our
activities generally, is warmly invited to telephone for further information.

Heathfield Community Police Team
I would like to use my first article to introduce
myself as the new Sergeant of the Heathfield
Neighbourhood Team and to offer readers
some crime prevention advice. As spring arrives, and we start to get lighter mornings
and evenings, many of us will be taking the
opportunity to spruce up our gardens.
The value of equipment kept in our sheds
and outbuildings for these purposes can be
considerable and they are tempting to
thieves who may try to sell them on or use
them to break into your house. However, you
can increase the security of your shed or
garage by taking some simple steps:
• Gravel paths act as a deterrent as they
make a noise when walked upon
• Secure your outbuildings by reinforcing
hinges, fitting doors with non-returnable
screws or coach bolts and secure padlocks
• Keep your outbuildings in good condition split, rotten or warped door and window
frames could provide an easy way in for
thieves
• Install a good shed alarm or even extend
your house alarm to cover your outbuildings
• Plant thorny shrubs to create a natural
barrier
• Security mark all items and secure valuable
items inside your outbuildings using security cables or chains with strong padlocks
After all that activity you may be considering
a spring break, or have just booked your
summer holiday. Unfortunately we have seen
a rise in reports of house burglaries, particularly in the north of the district. A number of
these have happened when properties have
been left empty for a significant period of
time, including when residents have been
away on holiday. Three simple actions should
help deter these types of opportunistic criminals…Light it, Lock it, List it.
Light it – Make your house look occupied even when it isn't:
• Use an automatic timer switch to turn interior lights on and off
• Install low wattage timed security lighting
that stays on throughout the night.
• Fit motion sensitive floodlights to target outside areas and surprise anyone trying their
luck
Lock it:
• Keep your front and back doors shut and
locked - even when you are at home
www.heathfield.net
• Fit window locks and ensure French windows and patio doors are secure.
• Never leave door keys, car keys or other
valuables in reach of a letterbox or window
• If you can, install a burglar alarm and set it
every time you leave your home
List it:
• Register your property at immobilise.com,
it's free of charge and can increase your
chances of being reunited with your property
• Install an app on your phone/tablet so that it
can be traced
Criminals can sometimes also use the ‘cold
calling’ method to find out if properties are occupied, knocking on doors in an area to see
if someone answers. Please tell your neighbours if you are going to be away and ask
them to let us know if they witness any cold
calling in your neighbourhood or see any suspicious activity. You can email us on
[email protected] or call 101 with
any information that is not related to an emergency or actual crime in progress. No matter
how small or apparently insignificant you feel
it is, your information could really make a difference.
I hope you have found this article useful. If
you would like further advice visit www.sussex.police.uk/help-centre/your-local-district/wealden and click on the ward where you

Heffle Golf Society
Formed in 1993 the Heffle Golf Society has developed into one of the most active Golf Societies
in the county. With over 350 events organised on over 100 different courses the Society continues to flourish as a completely non-profit organisation with moderately priced competitive golf
provided on a monthly basis. Our games are predominantly played in the Kent and Sussex
areas, normally on the third Wednesday of each month. There is no joining fee, no hidden costs
and no requirement of a recognised golf handicap. All we ask is knowledge of, or a willingness
to learn and a standard of golfing etiquette that has enabled us to be welcomed at every golf
course we visit. The prices we charge for each event are exactly what we are asked to pay by
the course we visit, plus a small prize fund and a small amount to cover website charges.

Heathfield and Horam District Girl Guides
Girls only: Rainbows 5-7, Brownies 7-10, Guides 10-14, Senior Section 14+
Girlguiding in Sussex East could not happen without the time given by 1,150 Leaders, Commissioners, Appointment Holders and Helpers in our 288 units across the County. We give the
girls a supportive, inclusive and exciting environment where they can reach their own conclusions
about the world. We show them how they can speak out and take positive action to improve their
lives and the lives of others.
Leaders in Heathfield and Horam District create full and varied programs of activities for the girls
in their individual units and attend many of the events organised at District, Division and County
levels and we have quite a few girls attending the County International Olave Camp. A walk
down the Cuckoo Trail is being organised by the Division, amongst other events, to take place
sometime in the Spring. The District is also extremely well supported by both the Trefoil Guild
and Friends of Guiding. We want guiding to grow so that more girls and
young women can reap the benefits, so if you have any time to offer or
skills to pass on, we would love to hear from you. Anita Preece 01323

Selwyns Wood
This time last year I wrote of the heavy rains and strong winds affecting the Selwyns Wood Nature Reserve and this year I could do the same! The ghyll stream is running fast and in some
areas other streams have overflowed to flood the surrounding ground. However, we know that
spring and summer will soon come so I shall look back to last year’s glorious summer and anticipate this year’s spring.
The warm and sunny weather meant that we were able to complete 24 of the regular 26 weekly
butterfly surveys that the Sussex Wildlife Trust volunteers carry out; with a total of 241 individual sightings which was well up on previous years. Our most commonly seen butterflies were,
in decreasing order, the: Speckled Wood, Gatekeeper and Meadow Brown. Yet each year produces some variations and for 2014 the warm spring saw many more sightings of the Peacock
butterfly in April and August/early September gave us the largest number of Gatekeepers
recorded on the reserve. Many factors affect butterfly populations and swings in numbers are not
uncommon and on the downside we saw far fewer Ringlets than in other years. It is always a joy
when we see our two ’special’ butterflies and 2014 produced good sightings of both the SilverWashed Fritillary and the White Admiral. Let us hope for another good butterfly year in 2015.
Soon the green shoots of the Bluebells will be pushing up and then giving the reserve its ‘wash’
of blue in the spring. Several overgrown areas have been cleared and we hope that the increase
in light will stimulate the dormant Bluebell bulbs. A major task for the volunteers in the coming
months will be the repair of the rustic bridge which crosses one of the ghyll streams, so if you
visit the reserve do not be surprised to see some path closures!
Trevor Hince, Volunteer Reserve Manager
(To find the reserve take Firgrove Road by Cross-in-Hand Methodist Church for a little more
than half a mile and the reserve is signposted on the left. Drive slowly - you might miss it!)

Cross-in-Hand WI
Cross in Hand WI meets in the afternoon on the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Village
Hall, which is just 1 mile from Heathfield High Street. Our meetings usually consist of talks given
by interesting speakers followed by afternoon tea with a chance to chat with other ladies from
the local area. In the past year subjects have ranged from the Brighton Pavillion to the Tiller Girls
(with an opportunity to take part in the line-up)! There is an interesting sales table and a raffle.
This year the WI is celebrating its 100 year birthday. A baton has been circulating around the
whole country with photographs to be kept on a memory stick for the future. Our own county of
East Sussex was included in this baton relay before being handed over to West Sussex. The
baton will finally arrive at the Albert Hall in London for the Annual General Meeting in June.

Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) - Locations in Heathfield
PADs are located as follows:
• The outside wall of the Heathfield Fire Station
• Heathfield Ambulance Station
• Red telephone box in The Street, Waldron
(100 metres from The Star pub)
There are, hopefully, going to be more installed
in the surrounding villages (please see Parish
Council article on page 7). These PADs speak
when opened and are easy to use. The First
Aid principles are as follows:
1. If someone drops dead (no pulse, no obvious breathing, awareness or movement), lie
the 'victim' flat on their back on a hard surface. Shout for help.
2. Start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
= firm compression of the centre of the chest
with the palm of one hand on top of the back
of the other hand, 100 times a minute.
3. Get someone else to ring 999 or 112 for the
emergency ambulance service and advise
the operator of the location (the operator will
know the site of the nearest PAD).
4. Get someone else to collect the defibrillator
(the PAD) and open it when at the scene. It
takes a few moments to power up.
5. Apply the two defibrillator pads (adhesive
squares) to the chest (centre and left side)
as directed by the voice instructions issued
by the defibrillator and also depicted diagrammatically.
6.Proceed as directed by the defibrillator. Continue CPR if pulse not restored (defibrillator
will advise if there is a heart rhythm). Hand

over to the professionals when they arrive
(should be within eight minutes).
7. Life saved!
Courses on resuscitation for the general public are being arranged in Heathfield.
The siting of the defibrillators and their availability is, of course, separate from the Heathfield and Waldron First Responder scheme as
such. This scheme ensures the fastest attendance possible at the scene by a trained individual (whether Responder or ambulance
Paramedic) in possession of a defibrillator
which he or she brings with them having been
advised by the ambulance service of the location of a potentially life-threatening (Category
A) incident. I am happy to give a talk about it all
to any group that wishes and have done so a
number of times. The more publicity the better!

Halo’s Heavenly in spring - Many of you will be
relieved to know that monochrome is a big look
this spring. It is virtually impossible to get this
wrong; black and white always looks good and
it is easy to inject a little colour with a scarf, bag
or jewellery. Mix things up a little by wearing a
biker jacket over a dress rather than just with
jeans. In Halo we are always on hand to suggest other ways in which to wear a garment and
accessorise to ensure you get maximum wear
and value from your purchase. So come and
have a look at the gorgeous new stock – we are
always happy to welcome browsers.

The Burwash Monday Painters
Burwash Monday Painters are currently enjoying the winter programme and looking forward to
the outdoor season beginning May. We had an excellent exhibition in November; exhibiting about
a hundred framed paintings and many unframed and the support we received from local people
and other visitors was greatly appreciated. We would like to thank all who helped with advertising this event. We are a very friendly group and enjoy sharing our love of painting and spending time together each Monday, especially in the summer when we paint outdoors all day at
different venues around this beautiful county. Some of our work is for sale at the Community
Shop and Café, Hurst Green, and on our website. For more information please go to www.burwash-monday-painters.com or phone Grace on 01435 860848 or Anne on 01435 883247.

Broad Oak Pre-School
We continue to deliver outstanding care and
education for children aged 2 to 5, encouraging every child to develop their individuality and
to become an independent critical thinker.
We have welcomed several new children and
their families this term and they have been enjoying the many activities on offer. We continue to use our on-site Forest School as often
as we can and are looking forward to spending
lots of time there over the spring and summer
months, so the children can experience the
natural world, climb the trees, swing in the tyre
swing, build dens and play in the mud kitchen.
We are very happy to be able to offer government funded places to eligible 2 year olds, so
that more families are able to access the opportunity for their children to come to a nurtur-
ing, stimulating environment where they can
learn through play.
The Baby Bops Baby and Toddler Group continue to run from 9.45am – 11.45am every Friday in the Scout Hut next to the Village Hall
and you are very welcome to come.
If you would like any further information, then
please give us a call on 01435 864326, or visit
our website www.bops.co.uk . We do currently
have spaces available and are also booking
places for September.
St Richards Pre-School
St Richards Pre-School provides an exciting, stimulating, fun and safe learning environment for
children aged from 2 to 5 through a full varied and balanced curriculum. We start the New Year
by welcoming 7 new families to our pre-school.
The Christmas term was a very busy time for the children and staff, with the annual traditional
Nativity Play with all the children taking a role. The children had a magical Christmas party with
a children’s entertainer providing fun, giggles and great magic tricks. Father Christmas also
dropped by to surprise the children and staff, so thank you to everyone involved in making the
party one to remember. This term also saw the launch of our new pre-school logo within the community and on our uniform.
For the coming spring term the children will be taking part in a sponsored pancake catch, hoping to raise as much money as possible for new garden equipment. We will be celebrating
Mother’s Day by inviting their Mummy’s in for our Annual Mummy Coffee Morning; having made
them a handmade card and treat.
Upcoming Fundraising events include the annual Spring Fayre being held on Saturday 9 May in
the St Richards Hall from 2.00pm - 4.00pm. Please pop
along to join in the bonnet competition, themed games or
purchase a raffle ticket and a slice of homemade cake. We
look forward to seeing you there!
If you wish to find out more about St Richards Pre-School
and place availability in September please call Lisa Johnston on 07751 072765 or go to our website www.strichardspreschool.org.uk
