Chapter One
In 2007, a rumbling started in the short track world. Talk about a touring series that was affordable started to circulate.
With interest growing and costs elsewhere escalating out of control the time was right. Major changes year after year forced teams
to withdraw from the former USAR Pro Cup Series. The time had come to get back to the basic idea of running the cars that teams
already had. Several people were interested in a low-cost series and came together to make it happen. The time for talking was over,
and the time for doing had arrived.
On October 13, 2007 Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina was chosen for an exhibition race with teams from as far away as
Iowa and Pennsylvania coming to compete. Fifteen steel-bodied stock cars showed up for a 50 lap trophy dash with Dexter Canipe
Jr. of Newton, NC winning that race.
Two weeks later, a second race at nearby Tri-County Motor Speedway was held and had competitors from Florida, Mississippi, and
Indiana joining in as well.
The Super Cup Stock Car Series was formed by a five member advisory board consisting of Owners, Drivers and Officials, and series
operations are still run using this method to this day.
On November 11, 2007 a meeting was held to determine the format of this series. The exhibition races indicated that a new series
would be well-received. The core of this series would be the 3,300-pound Pro Cup stock cars that were otherwise obsolete. The new
series made appearances at the PRI Show (then held in Orlando, FL) as well as the Piedmont Expo in NC. The schedule was set for
2008. Within 353 days, 10 sanctioned races were held in five states at seven different race tracks. The new series had four first-time
winners and two veterans winning races in its first season.
Chapter Two
Fast forward nearly a decade and the direction of the Super Cup Stock Car Series may have changed, but its goals have not.
A simple idea continued that was started in the first place: race the cars that teams have and don’t change anything that they don’t
have to. Being inclusive, not exclusive, and allow similar type cars to race with the fewest amount of changes. Hold races in the areas
where the teams are located.
It has never been forgotten that SCSCS was started for the people who were priced out by constant changes and high travel costs.
The main reason for its success has been by controlling the costs. Experience has shown that the most expensive thing in racing is a
rule that saves money. (Amen)
Over the years this series has seen a little bit of everything: a mix of Winston Cup, Busch, and ARCA cars along with NASCAR
North & East Series cars. These cars are still welcome today with some minor changes that help maintain the identity of the series.
When Pro Cup changed its direction at the end of 2014 it left teams wondering what they can do with these cars. Several modern Pro
Cup cars have already switched to SCSCS after the greenhouse area was approved that year, making the changeover much easier.
Slowly over the years the series moved its races, as registration grew in the north and declined in the south. SCSCS first raced in
Western Pennsylvania at Motordrome Speedway in 2010. In 2013, the series expanded to CNB Bank Raceway Park in Clearfield, PA
for the first time. 2014 saw the return of these cars to the recently reopened Jennerstown Speedway.
Super Cup will begin its ninth season at Midvale Speedway in Ohio and will head west a couple hours the following month to
Columbus Motor Speedway. It will mark the final season of operation for the latter Ohio track that has supported the series since
near the beginning.
Jennerstown Speedway Complex is back on the 2016 schedule with two summer dates. Each event will have twin features, one run in
the daylight and one at night, a popular format in which the 2015 season concluded with.
SCSCS has had several requests to bring the series to some southern tracks in the near future and is looking to return the ‘Racin The
Way It Used To Be’ style of stock car racing to North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and West Virginia. A race already scheduled for
August 2016 will be at Virginia’s Lonesome Pine Raceway, a popular stop for drivers and teams during the first few years.
Additionally in 2016, SCSCS drivers and teams will be showcased in front of a national audience on several occasions. Production
of races as part of a renewed partnership with Sopwith Motorsports will air at a later date on MAVTV and LucasOilRacing.tv for
the first time.
The future looks bright for the fans, series, teams, and tracks that host them.
