VOL. 8 NO. 38
SEPTEMBER 23, 2015
The time for beginning construction on our
new east-end building is about to arrive.
(Construction of the building that will be
housing the Lamplighter’s Bible Fellowship
Group is set to begin in January.)
Mark down Sunday morning, October 25. On that day, we will have a
revised schedule so that we can gather outside for a Ground-breaking
Ceremony. Watch the Bridge and website for further details. Please be
aware that it is probable that some preliminary site work will already
be underway by the Sunday of ground-breaking. We could start seeing activity on the east end within a matter of days. These are exciting
times at Austin Baptist Church!
— G. Dyer
I hope you will take note of the
EDUCATION CONNECTION table
next Sunday. You will see it in the
lobby immediately beside the
“@Home” Resource Center. Our
church is involved in partnerships
with schools in our area. The commitment is to show Christ’s love
through helping children with reading, support of teachers and other
faculty, and in other ways. Evonne
Boggs and Jen Brannan are giving
leadership to this very special and
effective ministry. If you have been
seeking a way to serve, I hope you
will consider devoting time to Education Connection. Your acts of love
can make a world of difference!
On Wednesday evening, September
30, at 7:15 p.m., I will be having another information meeting about the
trip to Israel and Jordan that I will be
hosting in March of next year. If you
have an interest in more information—or have already registered
but were not able to attend the first
information meeting—I invite you to
join me in the chapel to learn more
about this exciting opportunity to tour
the land of the Bible.

Speaking of Wednesday evenings, we have such a wonderful time together each Wednesday evening at ABC. The great meals—prepared by the
loving hands of the Samuelsons and their team of devoted volunteers—are
always something special. (The Strawberry Shortcake last Wednesday
evening was irresistible!) The fellowship as a family of faith around the tables is always sweet. We have the opportunity to get much more in-depth
in our Bible study. (Right now we are in chapter 20 of the great book of
Exodus.) The children have a great time in their choirs. As one of my
friends often says, “It’s all good!” I know it is a challenge for some of our
folks to get to our campus on Wednesday nights with work schedules, traffic, and distance; but for those who can, it gives a valuable boost in the
middle of the week.

Page 3 Thirst: Mission Liberia - Bringing Living Water to God’s People
Todd Phillips will preach for us in both
services on Sunday, October 11. He is the Founder
and
President
of
THE
LAST
WELL
(www.thelastwell.org), an organization with a Godsized mission to “provide access to clean water to
the entire nation of Liberia – border to border – and offer the Gospel to every Liberian we serve.”
THE LAST WELL has set the goal
of reaching every Liberian with
water and the Gospel by 2020!
Todd is the Executive Producer of
THIRST:
Mission
Liberia
(www.thirstmissionliberia.com), a
documentary about their historic
efforts in Liberia.
Before serving in his current role,
Todd served as Teaching Pastor
at Lake Pointe Church in Rockwall, Texas. Lake Pointe serves
over 8,000 people weekly. Before
serving at Lake Pointe, Todd spent 15 years serving
as pastor for four generationally targeted evangelistic ministries in Texas: Austin Metro, San Antonio
Metro, and The Soul Café in Kerrville, as well as
serving as the pastor of Frontline, a ministry to
young adults in Washington D.C. These four ministries combined reached over 40,000 young adults
with the Gospel.
Serve the Poor. Stop Injustice. Change the
World…In Jesus’ Name (www.threadsmedia.com).
Todd completed a Master of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2000 with honors, and received a Doctorate of Ministry from Dallas
Theological Seminary in 2010. Todd, his wife Julie,
and their three children: Parker,
Katherine, and Raney Grace live in
Heath, Texas. Julie is the daughter
of ABC members Gary and Janan
Grissom.
On the evening of October 11,
Austin Baptist Church will host the
first screening of the documentary
Todd has produced about his ministry in Liberia. It will be shown at
6:00 pm in the Worship Center.
Make plans to attend, and bring a
friend!
— David Procter
Todd has two passions: 1) Sharing the Good News
of Jesus Christ with those who don’t yet know Him,
and 2) Discipling Christ-followers to give all of their
lives and lifestyles to God. He prays daily for men
and women in the American church today to live out
the principles summed up in the following quote:
“One person totally devoted to God can do infinitely
more than a thousand people who have simply been
awakened by God’s Spirit.”
Todd is the author of Spiritual CPR: Reviving a
Flat-lined Generation, and Get Uncomfortable:
The Last Well partners with the best water and gospel organizations in the industry to bring clean water and the Gospel
to the entire nation of Liberia.

Hymns Reference Scripture
I realize that most people do not even pick up a
hymnal these days. We either have the words
and notes memorized, or we depend on the
screens for the words. You may not be aware
that there is a scripture for each hymn or praise
song, found just under the title. Additionally,
there is an index in the back of the hymnal that
lists all of the scriptures. This little tool comes in
handy during the planning of a worship service;
however, you might find it interesting to look up
whatever scripture you are meditating on during
your quiet time this week. For example, if you are
reading Psalm 139, you would find that there are
five hymns that illustrate that chapter. My top two
favorites are “My Lord is Near Me All the Time”
and “Search Me, O God.” As I prepared the
PowerPoint for the service on Sunday, I experimented with just reading the scripture verses in
the order that the hymns will be sung:
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything
let your requests be made known to God.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving
and His courts with praise.
Jesus replied to them, “Have faith in God.”
Trust in the Lord with all your heart.
Response: Here I am. Send me.
Isn’t that amazing?
Sunday is going to be wonderful! Children’s
Choirs and Joyful Noise are singing at the beginning of both services, so come early!

Each year in September, American Heritage Girls troops around the country participate in a day of service.
Each year, we try to do something different than the year before. This year, our troop had a tea party for a
retirement home in Austin. All the girls helped get the tea party ready. The Tenderhearts (1st-3rd grade)
made “French Vanilla” candles. The older girls made 3D Eiffel Towers for the centerpieces on each table.
On Saturday, September 19, 2015, we invited all the residents to come and have tea with us. Several people
came and interacted with the girls. Each girl made sure that the attendee had something to eat and drink,
and had some conversation. It was awesome to see the different generations having conversations and
laughing. The moms helped with the food and took some pictures.

Page 12 Many of our students love the
game ping pong. On any given
Sunday morning or Wednesday
night, you can find them up in
the youth area battling it out! I
am not very gifted at this sport,
but I think it’s a great game to
watch. Especially interesting is
watching the players when they
think about their next move.
Every swing and shot is designed to strike a blow and impacts their action.
In some ways, ping pong is like
conflict in friendships. Once the
battle is determined, the actions
of each person are designed to
attack. In the end, there is a
winner and someone loses. But
one thing is for sure, neither
person at the end is on the
same team.

ary crew (which also included
Barnabas). During one of their
journeys, John Mark chickened
out and ran back to Jerusalem,
leaving Paul and his crew with
one less person for their work.
This decision really angered
Paul. In fact he was so angry
that later when John Mark wanted to come with him on another
journey, he refused. Barnabas
wanted to have grace on John
Mark and give him another
chance. However, this caused
an argument between Paul and
Barnabas that ended with them
splitting ways. The greatest missionary team on the planet split
up because of a conflict between friends.
For Axis this week, we are talking about When Friends Conflict. Our primary passage is
the story of Paul and John
Mark. It’s an interesting story to
observe. Rarely do the authors
of the New Testament talk directly about it, but it was a conflict that changed the course of
Paul’s ministry.
Where does it end? In time
(specifically in Colossians 4 and
2 Timothy 4), we see Paul calling John Mark back. Paul even
went so far as calling the young
man helpful for his work. He
eventually resolved the conflict.
John Mark not only helped Paul
later in his life, but also many
scholars credit him with coordinating with Peter to write the
Gospel of Mark. The resolution
ended in glory to God.
John Mark was a young man
who was part of Paul’s mission-
God calls us to forgive. We talk
often about the fact that God
God calls us to forgive. We talk often about
the fact that God has plans for our personal
lives, but we also have to consider that God
has plans for our friendships.
has plans for our personal lives,
but we also have to consider
that God has plans for our
friendships. What awesome
things will happen as a result of
us resolving broken friendships? What people will find
their salvation through Christ
because of our friendships?
Forgiveness
always
costs
something, but Jesus commands it for His sake. May we
be a church that shows grace
and resolves broken relationships for the glory and fame of
our Lord Jesus Christ!
By Christ’s Love,
Matt
