August - Red River Region PCA
In the last year our club
has surpassed 100
members, taking us out
of the “small region”
category. Although our
membership has doubled in the past few years, we still have
only about six of seven people doing all
the work. We Need You! This year,
we've had a struggle with events. This
is your club, and we need you to help it
along. Planning and / or hosting
events, taking on chair positions, and
running for board positions. If our club
is to stay strong and keep growing,
then what we need is more people like
you, to become more involved. The
positions in the club require varying
amounts of effort, ranging from a few
hours period, to a few hours a week.
Becoming engaged in the club is
rewarding. You meet new people, you
have fun with your car, and you do
something for everyone in the club.

Secondly, we
have a website
administrator
who's ready to
pass the torch. If
you have web
experience, and
would like to run
our site, we need
a piece of reflective tape on the engine crankshaft and aims an
optical sensor at it to accurately measure RPMs. The car is
started up and run through the gears normally until the desired
start RPM is reached in 4th gear. 4th gear is usually chosen
because it has close to a 1:1 gear ratio in most cars and provides
the most accurate numbers. Once given the signal, the car owner
mashes the throttle to the floor until the desired maximum RPM's
are reached. As soon as the desired RPM's are reached, the
driver lifts off the throttle and lets the tires roll to a stop. A
computer calculates how quickly the car was able to rotate the
drum and at what RPM, and displays the horsepower and torque
curves almost instantly.
The maximum allowed 6 cars confirmed that they were coming
to the dyno day and I expected to have a number of curious
onlookers, too. After all, where else can a Porsche enthusiast
stand 5 feet from a 944 Turbo or GT2 putting all of its power
down? Unfortunately, only 4 cars and 2 spectators showed up
but those who did were not disappointed. Well, I was
disappointed because there was no way to put my Boxster on the
dyno with the equipment we had available. We strapped the
Boxster down then realized that with the engine buried in the
middle of the car, there was no access to the crankshaft. We tried
calculating RPM's by putting reflective tape on the wheels but the
dyno was too smart for that trick. I crawled underneath the car
and using long screwdrivers, I manage to put a piece of tape
through a small access hole onto the flywheel, but the optical
sensor couldn't get a good reading so my dyno attempt was over.

VOLUME 10
Right now, we are most in need for
people to put on events. The summer
will be over soon, and we could use
some creative
ideas as well as
people to execute them.
The Red River Region of the Porsche Club of America had its
first (hopefully annual) Dyno Day on June 23rd, 2009. For those
who do not know, a chassis dyno measures a cars horsepower
without removing the engine from the car. A large, rotating steel
drum is set in the shop floor and the car is strapped down so that
it's drive tires are on top of the drum. The dyno operator then puts

EDITOR’S COLUMN EDITOR’S COLUMN EDITOR’S COLUMN EDITOR’S COLUMN
When Tobias mentioned at our last
meeting that the Red River Region
needed a new newsletter editor for
“Red River Ramblings”, I
volunteered. Although I have had
experience with newsletters, I don’t
have any experience writing an
Editor’s Column. I’ll start by
introducing myself
I’ve owned my
1982 928 since
August 2007 and
have been a member
of the Red River
Region PCA since
June 2008 (my wife
is an affiliate).
We have attended as many
meetings and functions as possible
(see info for the upcoming Pool Party
on page 3). The meetings are held
the first Wednesday of the month, at
7:00 pm (please check your email for
location). If you wish, you can arrive
at 6:00 pm and have dinner while
socializing with other members
before the meeting. I’ve found the
members to be a friendly bunch who
love exchanging Porsche
information and stories. Meetings
are open to all members and
affiliates. It’s a great way to meet
your fellow members and is a very
pleasant way to spend the evening.
We also helped in creating the
2009 World of Wheels display, which
won the Best Car Club Display
award. It was not only challenging,
but was a lot of fun and something I
am very proud to have been a
involved with. It was also a great way
to get to know other members better.
I hope you enjoy this and
upcoming issues. If you have an
article or photos you’d like published
in a future Red River Ramblings
issue, please email me at
[email protected]. I look
forward to hearing from you.

The next car to be strapped
down was Ken W's 1987 911
Turbo Cabriolet. Ken has
spent a lot of time and money
getting this car right and it
really showed when the
throttle hit the floor. From the
factory, a 1987 911 Turbo
makes 282 hp at the crank, or
about 225 hp at the wheels.
Ken cut the dyno test a little
short by taking the engine up
to only 5000 instead of the
6800 rpm redline, but it still
made 374 hp at the wheels, or
almost 470 hp at the crank! I
can't imagine how much
power it would make with a
little high octane fuel and
revving to redline.
Rick D brought his
unmodified bright yellow 996
GT2 to test on the rollers and it
did not disappoint. The 996 GT2 is rated at 462 hp at the crank
but in typical Porsche style, they are way under-rated. We all
stood back and watched as it bent the dyno needle to the tune
of 480 hp at the wheels!! That works out to 600 hp at the crankout of only 3.6 litres. The 996 GT2's reputation as a widow
maker is explained by having 2 wheel drive, no traction control
and a power curve that is nearly vertical at high RPM's; Kudos
to Rick for keeping it in one piece (so far).
The final car to be strapped down to the dyno was Geoff R's
944 Turbo. Geoff didn't have any idea what it would make for
power because he isn't entirely sure about what modifications
had been done. The pressurized 4 cylinder sounded smooth
and strong as Geoff put the pedal to the metal. Whatever is in it
works because the car was sold new with 230 hp at the crank
but now made closer to 320 hp!
Everybody seemed to really enjoy the experience and I hope
we can do it again next year, but maybe with more cars and
spectators. Wall's Rod and Custom
www.wallsrodcustom.com provided us with a great evening
of donuts, drinks and high octane excitement.
I would like to thank Brian Wall and all the
Porsche owners who brought their cars down
for testing. I have a DVD I made for each
owner with video of all the cars on the dyno.
Each owner received a printout of their dyno
numbers. Some videos can be seen on

On June 20th, 2009, a few Dakota's Region, PCA members
came from Fargo to spend the day with us and enjoy a cruise to
Lower Fort Garry National Park.
We met at 2:00 in the afternoon at the Hu's on First restaurant
parking lot in downtown Winnipeg. In attendance where, Dawn
and Brian Hanson, Yvonne Friesen and Lloyd Richardson,
Nancy and Paul Olson, Carol and Roger Grimm, Gail and Greg
Thody, and Tobias Theobald. Our tour consisted of two 944s, a
968, a boxster, a 911, and a Cayman S.
Everyone was supplied with a print out overview of our trip
including pictures of some of the sights that we could expect to
see. Our drive started with a trip through Winnipeg's St. John's
area, with a pleasurable drive along St. Cross Street, and Scotia
Street. We drove all the way into Kildonan Park, through the
park and then out of the city on Main Street.
We discussed the locks at Lockport, as well as the Red River
Floodway. Having grown up in Lockport, I didn't see this area as
being of particular interest, however having recently read a little
bit of Lockport history and then stopping here on the tour
brought that into perspective again. It appeared to be that the
stop was enjoyed by all. After approximately 20 minutes, we
continued to Lower Fort Garry.
Cars parked in Lockport overlooking the locks
We arrived at Lower Fort Garry at 3:45 pm. Having only 1
hour 15 minutes before the fort closed for the day, we proceeded
straight into the fort and began our self guided tour.
We leisurely walked the fort, stopping at the various
buildings were staff were dressed in period, acting out the
various roles of the people that lived and worked in the fort. Our
tour took to the end of day, where a few of us were “locked”
inside the fort as the doors to the interpretive centre were
already locked. Fortunately, we were able to walk around the
centre, over a flower bed and return to our cars.
On our way back to Winnipeg, we drove over the Lockport
Bridge, and cruised back to Winnipeg via Henderson Hwy. On
our way back to dinner at Hu's on First, Juliette and Ray
L'Arrivee joined the tail end of the drive, adding a 928 to our list
of cars.
We enjoyed dinner at Hu's. After dinner, our group split up
although for some the evening continued with a walk into the
Forks.
Overall, everyone had a great time, and we already
commented about the “next time”. We hope that next time, you
will be able to join us.

St. Andrew's Church
We turned onto River Road at Larter's Golf Course, and
headed toward Lockport, slowing down for a good look at the
Scott House, St Andrew's Church, and the Captain Kennedy
House. Once we arrived in Lockport, we stopped along the
locks. Our guests from Fargo were thoroughly enjoying the
drive. Seeing some of the wonderful real estate along historic
River Road. There were a few questions about the local folklore
regarding the St. Andrew's Church and the alleged hauntings in
the area.

Syl’s Drive Inn sponsored the Wheels Car Club Show and Shine
held in Carmen, Manitoba on June 13, 2009. The weather could not
have been more accommodating.
The Show and Shine was attended by three Red River Region
PCA members; Lloyd Richardson (in his red 1987 944), Ben Rusch
(in his 2004 yellow Boxster S Cab.) and Ray L’Arrivee (with wife
Juliette, in his 1982 yellow 928).
After meeting at the Petro Can on
Magillivray and the Perimeter, the
members had a most enjoyable drive
to Carmen. Ray was first to enter the
grounds. Thinking he was a show
participant, one of the event
organizers directed Ray to park with
the display cars. Ray explained that
they were there just to view the cars. Immediately after Ray, Ben
entered the park, followed by Lloyd. The organizer asked that the
Porsches become part of the show as “it would be great if the first
cars people saw entering the grounds were three Porches”. The
Porsches were parked under the
“Welcome to Carmen” sign. Not
only did the members end up
registering for the show
(registration was free),
registrants were given free food
coupons. The Porsches were a
hit and the afternoon was
enjoyed by those who attended.
Come join 120 of your closest/olders/new Boxster
friends on September 11-12-13 in Fredericksburg TX.
The plans were finalized over the weekend. There will
be the regular and extended follow-the-leader drives
everyone has enjoyed in the past, plus we are adding a
follow-the-clues self lead tour. Whichever one you
choose, you are sure to have a blast.
As always, plan your arrival for Friday afternoon, and
join us for some great German food and sample lots of
German beers at the Auslander. Saturday morning we
gather at the airport for a show-n-shine and a chance to
see A LOT of Boxsters all lined up in a row (we've had up
to 70 cars in the lineup - let break that record!!!!).
Mid morning we depart for the various drives, and enjoy
both follow-the-leader tours (traditional), and a new for
this year follow-the-clues self lead tour - for those who
want to control the pace on their own. A follow-the-clue
tour is a blast if you have never done one. But..... You
must have a navigator you trust will not hate you or
you them by the end of the day.
After the days drive, we will all gather for a post
event wind down social, then retire back to the
rooms to clean up for dinner. Dinner will be at Silver
Creek this year. Some of you might remember Silver
Creek from 2 years ago. We had to do a quick Friday
evening diversion to them after PL tried to burn down
the Auslander ;). The staff at Silver Creek were
wonderful, and we expect the same great service
this year.
The Sunday morning "secret" event just may
include a little track time at a nearby private country
club track. This isn't 100% yet, but pretty good
chance.
As with the past few years, all registration will be
done on www.clubregistration.net. Once you log on,
select Event Sign-up, click the down arrow next to
"Club", select Boxstoberfest then click search.
See you there!!!!!

If you are considering importing a used Porsche from
the US, this is a “must read”. Porsche Cars Canada
has just raised the bar!
Effective June 2009, Porsche Cars Canada's new
Importation Quality Assurance Process, states
that, “Only your authorized Porsche Dealer in Canada
can provide you with the documentation required for
government authorities after performing [these]
required modification and inspection steps”.

If you have any questions, please call Kelly Thiele, the Porsche
Service Manager at Auto Haus. Her phone number is 478-3734.
The requirements to obtain approval to register a US
car in Canada are defined by Canada's
Registrar of Imported Vehicles
(www.riv.ca). One key document required
to complete the transfer is The Recall
Letter. The RIV website clearly defines the
“acceptable” letter as (in short):
•
•
•
Cannot be older than 30 days from the date
of issue when presented to RIV
A letter from the manufacturer's U.S. or
Canadian head office, written on company
letterhead, stating clearly that there are no
outstanding recalls for the vehicle.
A printout from an American or Canadian
dealership's vehicle service database. This
document must be produced by an authorized
dealer and not a reseller.
Porsche Cars Canada and their authorized
dealers will only release this letter (and
other required documentation), after they
have conducted the Importation Quality
Assurance Process on the imported
vehicle. One of the requirements of this
Process is a, “detailed inspection and
technical compliance confirmation”.
Porsche's website continues, saying,
“..once these services, together with
any necessary modifications and
additional services required for the
technical confirmation, have been
effected, it will then be eligible to be
licensed for use in Canada. The
MSRP for the inspection and
compliance confirmation services is
$1,250, including an oil and filter
