From the Chief Editor’s Desk
Thank you for your untiring efforts in the publication of our 3rd issue of PARADIGM.
This biannual newsletter is an avenue for students, staff, stakeholders, colleagues, alumni
and friends to obtain the latest news and happenings within the university. In this issue you
will find snippets about the latest happenings in the university, the individuals who make
a difference and the activities that are constantly being carried out within the perimeters of
our university.
We have included an interview with our Chancellor, Tun (Dr) Rahah, and various articles,
our achievements and events during the past years.
Our university has also gained recognition through our excellent achievements both at the
national and international arenas. It is our hope that through our achievements, we may
strive harder and be one day recognised as one of the top IPTs in Malaysia.
We would like to congratulate the successful students who have joined the UNIRAZAK
‘family’ and bid them a very warm welcome.
Some of the notable events that we organised in 2010 include the continuation of the Tun
Abdul Razak Lecture Series, the launch of the Professorial Lecture Series, and the RSOG
Public Discourse. Of course, we also held our 10th Convocation Ceremony. You can read
about these events and more in this issue of Paradigm.
We hope you will find this issue an enjoyable reading experience. PARADIGM will strive to
provide the news and latest updates about the university and also its scholastic community.

MESSAGE
Message from the President
and Vice Chancellor
Dear colleagues, students, alumni and
friends,
Welcome back to the third issue of Paradigm,
the official newsletter of Universiti Tun Abdul
Razak. The past year was a busy time for
UNIRAZAK as we strive to keep innovating and
educating in our quest to become the leading
institution in providing quality education and
human capital. Paradigm is our voice and
platform to ensure that you are kept up to date
with the university’s latest developments, by
providing you with information covering our
most important news and events.
UNIRAZAK is continuing its strong growth
of 2009. The 2010 intake saw us register 3882
new students for our foundation and bachelor
degree programmes, and 164 new students in
our master and doctorate degree programmes.
We’ve also raised the number of offered
programmes to 62.
2010 saw the continuation of new academic
programmes and growth from both our Razak
Campus and Pintar Campus. I’m delighted to
say that the Razak School of Government has
accepted its first intake of students, and I’m
looking forward to the progress that they’ll
make and the quality of the graduates produced.
The Bank Rakyat School of Business and
Entrepreneurship as well as the Graduate School
of Business have also continued growing, and
I’m excited for our prospects in the future as we
develop even more niche, innovative academic
programmes.

Also we bid farewell to Kelana Jaya as the Pintar
Campus has moved to Leisure Commerce
Square. By doing so we acquire more space,
better facilities, and are able to pursue more
opportunities in our academic and professional
pursuits.
As always, we welcome your views, comments
and suggestions. As Paradigm sets out to be an
effective communication channel for students,
stakeholders, colleagues, alumni and friends,
your input is therefore extremely valuable in
helping us refine the profile and content of this
newsletter. Please let us know what you would
like to see in future issues – I’m glad to say that
we have achieved much in the past six months
and look forward to sharing more with you in
future issues of Paradigm.
Before parting, I wish to express my sincere
gratitude to all those who have contributed their
time and effort towards the realisation of this
newsletter. Thank you for your efforts.
The next few months will be teeming with
numerous compelling events, many of which
I am sure will be of interest to you. We are

Mace
Handover
YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin,
Minister of Higher Education, officially handed
the redesigned Mace and its safekeeping to
Prof. Datuk Dr. Md. Zabid Hj Abdul Rashid,
President and Vice Chancellor of UNIRAZAK.
The event was witnessed by Emeritus Prof.
Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim,
Chairman of UNIRAZAK’s Board of Directors,
at Dato’ Seri Khaled Nordin’s office in Putrajaya.
Having recently undergone a new design
facelift, UNIRAZAK’s mace is a symbol of the
university and many of its core, underlying
beliefs and philosophies. The design of the
mace is divided into three main components
representing the three levels of university study
namely the Bachelor’s degree, the Master’s
degree and the Doctor of Philosophy. The three
main components are:
• The upper part known as ‘the torch’
• The middle part known as ‘the chalice’
• The lower part known as ‘the shaft’
The torch, engraved on the top end of the
mace, adapted from the logo of UNIRAZAK,
symbolises the ultimate role of the University
as a beacon of light that spreads knowledge
throughout the national, regional and global
communities. The five facets of the mace
symbolise the five pillars of the ‘Rukun Negara’
or National Commandments which are
constantly upheld under any circumstances. The
name of the University is engraved around the
base of the torch in Roman script, signifying
the unity of the whole university community.
The chalice portrays the main function of
the university in pursuing knowledge. The
logo of the university which is surrounded by
carvings of Malaysia’s official national flower,
the Hibiscus, signifies the philosophy of the
University and the dynamism of the various
academic programmes offered. The name of
the university engraved in Jawi script represents
determination and faith which are the basic and
fundamental thrust of university education.
The motifs of the gold thread ‘songket’ at
the lower part of the chalice express the
university’s aspiration to continue its knowledge
dissemination while upholding Malaysian
traditional values and culture.
The shaft symbolises the readiness to contribute
knowledge and expertise for the advancement
and development of the people and the
nation. The Qur’anic verses from the Surah
Al-Mujadalah (58:11) and Az-Zumar (39:9)
contain the call for courage in seeking knowledge
and upholding the truth, which reminds us of
our unending responsibility to nurture, protect
and celebrate academic achievement among
students, faculty and staff. The ‘Pending’ or
Malay belt buckle depicts energy, power and
ability in producing dynamic scholars who are
pragmatic, creative and innovative to contribute
towards the advancement of Malaysian society
and the country.
All these elements are designed to reflect the
University’s commitment towards realising the
vision, mission and objectives of the University.

World Class Educational
Facilities
Official Launch of Razak Campus at
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak held a private
ceremony pronouncing the official opening
of their new Razak Campus, and also revealed
to the public the new Universiti Tun Abdul
Razak logo. The auspicious occasion was
attended by Prime Minister YAB Dato Sri’
Najib Tun Abdul Razak, various ministers of
the Malaysian government, invited heads of
tertiary institutions, corporate partners, and
many others. It was held at the premises of
the new Razak Campus at Capital Square on
Jalan Munshi Abdullah.
The guests were ushered to the Theatrette
where, upon the arrival of the Prime Minister,
the university’s President and Vice Chancellor
Prof. Datuk Dr. Md. Zabid Abdul Rashid
began the event’s proceedings with some short
welcome remarks. In his address he thanked
the guests for their attendance and expressed
his excitement for the new Razak Campus
and the potential that lies therein. Next was
a formal exchange of documents ceremony
marking various memorandums between
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak and UEM Group
Berhad, Kumpulan Karangkraf Sdn Bhd, and
Amanah Raya Berhad.
Prime Minister YAB Dato Sri’ Najib Tun
Abdul Razak, also Chairman of the university’s
Board of Trustees, delivered a speech in which

he expressed his hope that in redeveloping
UNIRAZAK, the management would do
everything possible to achieve the highest
standard of quality and continue to search for
the best partners for collaboration. The role of
UNIRAZAK must be seen in the context of
meeting the needs of the country, particularly
entrepreneurship and technopreneurship,
added Dato Sri’ Najib.
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak then showed their
new corporate video which shared some of
the university’s background information and
highlighted its various faculties and degree
programs. The University also unveiled its new
logo, which symbolises the greater heights to
which it aspires.
Strategically located in the new upcoming
business district of Capital Square (CapSquare)
at Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Universiti Tun
Abdul Razak’s new Razak Campus is part
of CapSquare’s new urban multimodal
development which consists of condominium
towers, office blocks and a 400 meter retail
centre boulevard complete with restaurants,
grocery stores, and a movie theatre. It is ideally
placed between the Golden Triangle and the
Central Business District, right in the centre
of Kuala Lumpur, with close proximity to
important places such as the Kuala Lumpur
City Centre (KLCC). It is also located within
walking distance to various prominent office
buildings, restaurants, hotels, banks and the
famous shopping stretch of Jalan Masjid India
and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. As such
it is easily accessed via public transport from
multiple points such as bus stations, the Dang
Wangi Putra LRT station, the Masjid Jamek Star
LRT station, and the Hang Tuah KL monorail
station – these are all approximately within a 10
minute walking distance to the campus.
The university’s commitment to providing
quality education and academic programmes is
reflected by the outstanding facilities installed
at the new campus, which was built with the
aim of providing an environment conducive
for creative and independent learning and
designed with the latest audio/video and
communications technologies. For example,

computer labs, and teaching rooms, as well as
a gallery that displayed further information
on the university’s history and Malaysia’s 2nd
Prime Minister the late Tun Abdul Razak, for

Minister then cut the ribbon and signed the
official plaque that signifies the official launch
of the Razak Campus. After this all guests and
staff were invited for the university’s Hari Raya
gathering.

Million (RM1,000,000.00) per annum to
selected sponsored students to pursue courses
at the University, and in return Karangkraf will
offer UNIRAZAK advertisement space in its
publication for a corresponding value of Ringgit
Malaysia One Million (RM1,000,000.00) per
annum. The sponsored students will be chosen
at Karangkraf ’s discretion. The exchange of
documents was between Professor Datuk Dr

& Managing Director of Kumpulan Karangkraf

the entire campus is equipped with Wi-Fi access
which allows students to take full advantage of
the university’s digital learning methods as and
when they wish to do so.
Other modern facilities include a student
lounge, lecture theatre, discussion rooms,
recreational area, library and computer
laboratory - these facilities are spread out
over two floors. The hallways exude a modern
setting that offers comfortable seating and green
landscapes to promote a relaxed and creative
learning atmosphere.
In summary, Universiti Tun Abdul Razak’s
modern Razak Campus is fully equipped to be
the choice for those seeking a quality education
coupled with a deep conducive learning
environment within the city of Kuala Lumpur.
Collaborative Agreements between Universiti
Tun Abdul Razak and Business Partners
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak, one of Malaysia’s
leading private universities, held a ceremony
marking the exchange of documents related
to new collaborative agreements between it
and its new business partners, namely UEM
Group Berhad, Kumpulan Karangkraf Sdn
Bhd, and Amanah Raya Berhad. The ceremonies
were witnessed by the Prime Minister of
Malaysia, YAB Dato Sri Najib Tun Abdul
Razak. Universiti Tun Abdul Razak and UEM
recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement
(MoA) in which the university’s Centre for
Executive Education (CEE) will receive an
endowment fund from UEM Group Berhad.
The endowment will be used for the UEM
Warriors program that implements the CEE’s
entrepreneurial and leadership program.
Additionally one of the university’s lecture halls
will be renamed the ‘UEM Lecture Hall’. The
exchange of documents was between Professor
Datuk Dr Md Zabid Hj Abdul Rashid, the
President and Vice Chancellor of Universiti Tun
Abdul Razak and Dato’ Izzaddin Idris, CEO &
Managing Director of UEM Group Berhad.
There is also a Memorandum of Agreement
(MoA) between Universiti Tun Abdul
Razak and Kumpulan Karangkraf Sdn Bhd,
Malaysia’s largest national language magazine
publisher with 30 titles. The Memorandum
of Agreement is based on the intention of
both parties to explore a closer working
relationship, whereby UNIRAZAK will offer
a scholarship worth Ringgit Malaysia One
Finally, a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) was recently signed between Universiti
Tun Abdul Razak and Amanah Raya Berhad
The MoU signals the interest of both parties
to collaborate in program development,
executive development and research grants in
Islamic Wealth Management. The exchange of
documents was between Professor Datuk Dr
Md Zabid Hj Abdul Rashid, the President and
Vice Chancellor of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak
and Puan Alina Hashim, Chief Operating
Officer of Amanah Raya Berhad.
These new collaborative agreements signify
the great trust that local companies have in
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak and are great
opportunities for all involved to work together
for mutual benefit. Universiti Tun Abdul Razak
has an extensive list of international and local
collaborations and looks forward to building
further relationships. Transport from multiple

Malaysia Innovation Economy
Concepts and Leadership Challenges
On 23rd July, the Prime Minister’s Office,
with the support of Universiti Tun Abdul
Razak’s Centre for Executive Education
(CEE) and Bank Rakyat, held the ministerial
“Malaysia Innovation Economy - Concepts
and Leadership Challenges” seminar at the
JW Marriot Hotel in Putrajaya. This seminar
was in line with YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib
Tun Abdul Razak’s One Malaysia vision and
directive that Malaysia become an innovation
economy. The seminar was attended by various
Malaysian ministers, business leaders, and
captains of industry.
UNIRAZAK and its CEE were honoured to
be chosen as the co-organiser of this event due
to their excellent track record and focus on
innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ibrahim bin Zahari, Director
of the Centre for Executive Education, adds
“The Premier Leadership Challenges in the
Innovation Economy” seminar is a pioneering
leadership program that addresses the core
principles that enable leaders to identify,
strategize and implement the concepts of an
innovation economy in order to better advance
Malaysia, her citizens, and her economy.
It is a half-day program that focuses on

learning, discussing, and understanding the new
economic and social-political issues affecting
Malaysia and globally. It was specifically
designed for members of the Malaysian cabinet,
deputy ministers, secretary generals, and other
VVIPs in the public service, who attended
the morning session. Another session was
held in the afternoon for special members of
Bank Rakyat and invited CEOs, presidents,
chairmen, and other senior members of various
Malaysian companies.

Abdul Razak, officially opened the seminar and
welcomed the delegates and speakers. The first
speaker was Dr. Curtis R. Carlson, CEO of
Stanford Research Institute USA, who spoke
on “Innovation and Creativity: Creating an
Innovation Society in Malaysia”. He stressed
the importance of innovation as an essential
contributor to Malaysia’s economic growth as
part of the New Economic Model, with ideas for
how Malaysia can be more successful, sooner,
and with less investment. He gave a brief history
of previous innovations in business mindset
and focus, and outlined the SRI’s 5 Disciplines
of Innovation (5DoI). 5DoI is a systematic
approach that describes 5 unique disciplines
that are essential to develop innovation within
an organisation.
Speaking next was Professor Jean-Philippe
Deschamps, Professor of Technology &
Innovation Management at IMD International,
Switzerland, who spoke on “Innovation
Leadership: The Real Drivers of Innovation
Performance”. He outlined Malaysia’s current
global standing with respect to several categories
such as competitiveness, technological skills and
resources, human and managerial development,
government-related innovation indicators,
and many more. He opined that Malaysia
can and should try to outsmart its main Asian
competitors in all aspects, not just products
or technology. He went on to characterise
innovation leaders and distinguished between
the two main leader types. Prof. Deschamps also
described how to align and build complementary
types of leaders. His presentation included
several graphs and flowcharts that describe the
innovation process, and closed his session with
the statement that innovation is about ideas
and faultless execution. “Ultimately, it means
turning innovation into a core competency”,
he adds.

Both Dr. Carlson and Prof. Deschamps
presented several unique ideas and approaches
on how innovation can be started, developed,
and maintained within the organisation. Their
informative sessions, which balanced careful
research and theory with practical experiences
and insights, were well received by the audience.
In the afternoon session, both were presented
with gifts by Prof. Datuk Dr. Zabid, as tokens
of appreciation.
Prof. Dr. Ibrahim officially ended the day’s
events by delivering the closing remarks.

Yo u’v e b e e n U N I R A Z A K ’s P r o
Chancellor since 2001. What are your
thoughts on UNIRAZAK’s development
and progress since then?
UNIRAZAK has done a wonderful job
and I’m delighted to see how much it has
achieved in the past nine years. The
university has really grown in terms of
faculties, number of programmes, and
most importantly the number of graduates.
I’m also happy to see the university
focusing more on niche and specialised
programmes, which allow us to offer
new and exciting areas of study to our
fellow Malaysians. Prof Dr Syed Hamid
Al Junid and Prof Datuk Md Zabid Ab
Rashid, the former and current Presidents
and Vice Chancellors of UNIRAZAK are
to be commended for having performed
an outstanding job. I’m proud that the
university bears my late husband’s name.

2. What is your favourite memory as
UNIRAZAK’s Pro Chancellor?
I have a few, one was the first time I came
to visit the Razak Campus. It’s a beautiful
city campus, very modern and relaxed,
possessing much of the latest technology.
It doesn’t even have a blackboard! I was
very surprised to see that it has glassboards
instead. In my day every classroom had a
blackboard. All the classrooms and
computer labs look very high tech. We
have come a long way and I’m excited for
the students who will be based here.
On a personal note, during the 2009
convocation there was a special young man
who came to receive his scroll. He was
disabled and came up on to the stage in
his wheelchair. I’ve forgotten his name,
but I remember him vividly due to the
beaming look of achievement and
personal satisfaction on his face. I was
very touched to see how delighted he was
and how his hard work had paid off,
and hope that we all work that hard
and can experience that same sense of
achievement. I’m glad that UNIRAZAK
played a role in this young man’s success
and hope for us to help even more
students achieve the success that they seek.
4. What is your hope for UNIRAZAK
in the future?
I hope to be around for another 9 years
at least to see it! I believe that UNIRAZAK
is doing a good job of providing new,
exciting academic programmes and careers
for students to pursue, and I would like
to see even more specialised programmes
that showcase what our university is
really capable of. I’m sure my late husband,
Tun Razak, would approve and ask that
UNIRAZAK do even more to help the
marginalised communities and village
folk to achieve more prosperity. With
that, and on a more personal note, I hope
that my new Tabung Biasiswa Tun Rahah
can help. It is a scholarship fund that will
be launched sometime in 2011, providing
financial assistance to top flight students
and students from poor families. Most of
all I would like to see even more graduates
receive their scrolls and go out to secure
good careers, and provide well for their
families and community.
3. You’ve also presided at all of the
university’s convocations. What is your
hope for the graduates?
I hope that they all become good
upstanding citizens and role models for
their families and communities. I hope
that they can hold on to the good manners
and social traditions of their elders, and
not get overly caught up in modern
trappings. I hope that they all contribute
to those less well off then they are, and I
hope that they become trustworthy
patriotic Malaysians who love their country
and are good to their fellow man. It doesn’t
matter what you are, whether you are a
CEO of a multinational company or a
roadside sweeper, what matters is who you
are, to be humble, and that you treat
everyone fairly and with courtesy and
respect.

PROFILE
Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hj Hassan
Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Administration
Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Mohd Sidek bin Haji Hassan
was born on 24 June 1951 in Pekan, Pahang
Darul Makmur. Upon graduating with a
Bachelor’s Degree in Economics (Honours)
in Public Administration from the University
of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 1974, he
was appointed to the Administrative and
Diplomatic Service (PTD) of the Public
Service Department on 15 April 1974 as
Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Trade
of Malaysia.
During his tenure at the Ministry, he was
assigned as Assistant Trade Commissioner
at the Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo, Japan;
Malaysian Trade Commissioner in Sydney,
Australia; Deputy Director of Policy, Industrial
Development Division; Deputy Director
(Operations), Policy and Research Division;
Minister Counsellor of Economic Affairs
at the Malaysian Trade Commissioner’s
Office in Washington D.C., United States
of America; and Director of Multilateral
Relations Division. Apart from these, he has
also held offices as Principal Assistant Director
and Deputy Director, at the Implementation
and Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime
Minister’s Department.
While in service, Tan Sri Sidek received an
offer from the Public Service Department of
Malaysia to pursue his Master’s education. He
chose to advance in Business Administration
as a means to equip himself further in facing
the challenges in store for the nation’s public
administration. As a result, he obtained his
Masters in Business Administration (MBA)
from New Hampshire College, United States
of America in 1984.
Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Mohd Sidek has extensive
working experience in the Ministry of
International Trade and Industry. He was then
appointed as Deputy Secretary-General on 19
January 2001 and subsequently as SecretaryGeneral of the Ministry of International Trade
and Industry (MITI) on 24 October 2004.

Owing to his excellent service and leadership
qualities in line with the present requirements
of the nation’s public service, Y.Bhg. Tan Sri
Mohd Sidek bin Haji Hassan was officially
appointed by Seri Paduka Baginda Yang
Di-Pertuan Agong as Chief Secretary to the
Government effective 3rd September 2006.
In recognition of Tan Sri Sidek’s service and
dedication for the nation, he has received a
host of Honorary Awards from the Federal
Government and State Government. Some
of the Honorary Awards bestowed upon
Tan Sri Sidek include the Kesatria Mangku
Negara (K.M.N.); Panglima Mangku Negara
(P.M.N.), (that carries the title of Tan Sri);
Panglima Setia Mahkota (P.S.M.), (that carries
the title of Tan Sri); Darjah Indera Mahkota
Pahang (D.I.M.P); Darjah Kebesaran Sultan
Ahmad Shah Pahang Yang Amat Di Mulia Peringkat Pertama Sri Sultan Ahmad Shah
Pahang (S.S.A.P.) (that carries the title of Dato’
Seri); Panglima Negara Bintang Sarawak,
(P. N.B.S.) (that carries the title of Dato Sri);

As Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri
Sidek is assigned as Secretary to the Cabinet
Meeting / Special Cabinet Meeting, Menteri

Ministerial Meeting to Review the Progress of
the Implementation of Decisions of the InterGovernmental Report (IGC) 1962.
Pursuant to the powers vested under the
relevant Acts and by virtue of the position,
the Chief Secretary to the Government is
Chairman, Member and Secretary to several
Committees and Meetings as part of his
roles and responsibilities. By reason thereof,
Tan Sri Sidek is presently Chairman to 29
Committees, Panels and Task Forces formed by
the Government to coordinate, monitor and
implement the Nation’s development policies
and strategies. These include Meeting of
Secretaries General of Ministries and Heads
of Services; Meeting of the Heads of Federal
Departments; Liaison Meeting Between the
Federal Government and State Government;
Meeting of the Chief Executives of the Federal
Statutory Bodies; Meeting of the National
Development Planning Committee (JPPN);
Meeting of the Government’s Internet and
IT Committee (JITIK); Meeting of the Public
Complaints Permanent Committee (JKTPA);
Meeting of the National Action Working
Committee (JKTN); and the recently formed
Special Task Force to Facilitate Business
(PEMUDAH).

is also a Member of nine (9) National

The management and administration of the

In this regard, Tan Sri Sidek has been entrusted
as the Chairman of the Malaysian Institute
of Integrity that genuinely aspires to raise a
Public Service that is on a par with developed
countries in terms of integrity.

Well known for his sternness, Y.Bhg. Tan Sri
Sidek also constantly emphasizes discipline
in his administration to steer the Malaysian
Public Service towards excellence and glory.
By virtue of his righteousness, Tan Sri Sidek
was recently delegated by the Yang Amat
Berhormat Prime Minister to chair a Special
Task Force for the Development of the Port
Klang Free Zone (PKFZ). This Task Force
will identify weaknesses in the governance
and management in implementing the PKFZ
Development Project as well as recommend
measures for improvement, if necessary, and
further identify measures to make PKFZ more
progressive.
He is the current Group CEO and Managing
Director of Kumpulan Media Karangkraf Sdn.
Bhd., and oversees:
• Grup Majalah Karangkraf – a magazine
publishing division which is the largest in
Malaysia that publishes 28 titles
• Ultimate Print Sdn. Bhd – Malaysia’s
largest commercial printing company, and
all its subsidiaries
• Sinar Harian, the highest circulation Bahasa
Malaysia community daily newspaper
• Grup Buku Karangkraf – The book
division consisting of the following

Tan Sri Sidek, now 58, has been blissfully
married to Y.Bhg. Puan Sri Wan Noorlina
binti Wan Hussin for 33 years. They are
blessed with 4 children - 2 daughters and 2
sons - all successful in their respective careers.
Sidek is also a doting grandfather to his 3
grandchildren.
Y.Bhg. Dato’ Hussamuddin is also a dedicated
philanthropist having established two trust
funds, Yayasan Nur Karangkraf and Dana
Pendidikan Karangkraf. The former gives
out funds to single mothers and unfortunate
families, and the latter sponsors about 300
college students per year spending RM 2
million annually.
Despite a tight schedule in light of his capacity
as the highest authority in the Malaysian
Public Service with a workforce of more than
1.2 million, Tan Sri Sidek does not disregard
the fact that an active mind requires a healthy
body. Tan Sri Sidek spends limited time
playing golf for leisure that also transpires to
be an opportunity to interact with various
clients and stakeholders. He is also the
President of the Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan
Awam Malaysia (KGPA), the one and exclusive
Golf Club for Government Officers and the
Yang Di Pertua of the Malaysian Civil Servants
Welfare and Sports Council (MAKSAK).
Y.Bhg. Dato’ Hussamuddin graduated in
1978 from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
with a degree in Economics. He went on to
found and become the majority owner of
Kumpulan Media Karangkraf Sdn. Bhd., a
Malaysian media/publishing/printing business
conglomerate that employs 1400 workers and
generates a group annual sales turnover of
more than RM300 million yearly.

Our Corporate Identity
ONE
The upturned peak in this symbol emphasises the concept of growth and
evolution that constitutes the attitude that the people of Universiti
Tun Abdul Razak bring to their work. More importantly, it denotes
leadership – the cornerstone of the university – in learning excellence,
integrity, organisational skills, creativity and civic consciousness. It is
the crucial point after the first initiation of growth, before the final
burst into adulthood.
This demonstrates the university’s role in preparing and nurturing
students for the life that comes after the days of comfort in formal
education. The curve on the bottom left and top right corners combine
with the straight line in the middle to project imagery of efficiency,
expertise and leadership. The image in its entirety suggests speed and
surefootedness, as if the journey to excellence is unquestioned certainty.
TWO
The word ‘Universiti’, being the establishment as a whole, is set in
Franklin Gothic font as a fitting contrast to ‘Universiti Tun Abdul
Razak’. The letters are placed further apart one from another in order
to achieve aesthetic balance and sufficient emphasis, as they are smaller
and softer in colour. Grey is the colour of balance, wisdom, intelligence
and reliability, which reflects the university’s trademark characteristics.
The Universiti Tun Abdul Razak logo incorporates two graphic
elements, the symbol and the words ‘Universiti Tun Abdul Razak’.
The two elements combined help reinforce the brand character.
The logo must appear prominently on all materials published
by the university in print or electronic format. In particular, it
must appear on all materials used for advertising, marketing or
promotion and on all displays created for the university or its units.
Note that the words ‘Universiti Tun Abdul Razak’ are a graphic
element, inseparable from the symbol. The words may not be
recreated with any font, nor resized, nor rearranged for any reason.
It is a portrait of the plant shoot, which symbolises growth and
development, the goal and pride of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak.

Equilibrium is rendered on the logo as a whole, and attention may thus

Tun Abdul Razak Lecture Series
Since the last issue of Paradigm, Universiti
Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK) has organised
four more lectures (totaling five altogether) in
its Tun Abdul Razak Lecture Series (TARLS),
which is an ongoing event that focuses on the
late Tun Abdul Razak.

students, leaders of regulatory bodies and
captains of industry, and representatives from
various ministries, government departments
and agencies.
“The Tun Abdul Razak Lecture Series was
conceived for us to cherish and honour the
contributions made by our nation’s great
leaders, such as our former Prime Minister
the late Tun Abdul Razak. We hope that
these lectures, delivered by close associates
of the late Tun, will open a window into a
deeper understanding of his vision, a greater
recognition of his accomplishments, and an
opportunity for us to learn from history as we
take our own steps into the future. By taking
a closer look at the late Tun Abdul Razak’s
vision, achievements and goals, we remind
ourselves of the challenges that Malaysia faced,
the strides taken to overcome those challenges,
and perhaps even discover questions and
answers that educate us in our quest to build
a greater and stronger 1Malaysia”, said YBhg.

The inaugural lecture was held on 11th March
2009 and featured Tun Ahmad Sarji who
focused on the late Tun Abdul Razak - his
aspirations, patriotism, life, achievements,
contributions, challenges, foresights and
others. Since then, TARLS has featured 4
more preeminent speakers: YBhg. Tan Sri
Datuk Arshad Ayub, YM Raja Tan Sri Dato’
Muhammad Alias, YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’
Michael Chen and YBhg. Tan Sri Andrew
Sheng.
The 3rd TARLS lecture was held on 12
November 2009 and featured YM Raja Tan
Sri Dato’ Muhammad Alias whose lecture
was titled ‘Nation Building – The FELDA
Model’. In his hour-long presentation, YM
Raja Tan Sri provided insights and his personal
experiences behind the genesis of FELDA,
the FELDA model, and where FELDA
stands today. He also talked about how the
development of FELDA assisted in Nation
Building, the lessons that can be learnt from
the FELDA experience, and Tun Razak’s vision
and leadership for the education of bumiputras
– the long term perspective.
In the 2nd TARLS lecture on 22nd May 2009,
YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Arshad Ayub spoke on
‘Tun Abdul Razak: Nation Building Through
Education’ and shared with the audience
an overview of the educational needs and
training emphasis of the 60s and 70s in
the post-independence and nation-building
process, Tun Razak’s vision and leadership
for the education of the rural communities,
and the new Economic Policy and outcomes
in the education sector. Tan Sri also shared
his input in helping further the government’s

YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Michael Chen as the
4th speaker in the series, who spoke on
‘Governance - An Approach In the Razak
Era’. In his presentation YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’
Michael shared many personal anecdotes and
stories of the late Tun. He described the late
Tun Abdul Razak as a very hard-working
man, humble and very concerned about the
people’s welfare. He also described him as,
although not prone to laughing, was a man
who possessed a wonderful sense of humour.

Tan Sri also touched upon administrative
policy, the political ideology of the time, social
harmony, political philosophy in the region,
e.g. with ASEAN and policy on international
ties.
Most recently on 10th December 2010,
UNIRAZAK featured the 5th lecture in the
TARLS series with Tan Sri Andrew Sheng,
whose topic was “National Unity & National
Development: A 1Malaysia Supply Chain
Approach”. Tan Sri Andrew Sheng shared
his view that the concept of togetherness,
integration, and mutual economic success
started with the late Tun and has continued to
mould and affect the current 1Malaysia vision
and New Economic Model (NEM) under
the late Tun’s son, YAB Dato Seri Najib Tun
Razak, the current Malaysian Prime Minister.
Tan Sri Andrew opined that for Malaysia to
advance as a nation and achieve the high
income goals as stated in the NEM, national
harmony and unity is essential. It is imperative
for all Malaysians from all social and economic
levels, not just the government and private
sector, to be able to work together to achieve
prosperity – the 1Malaysia Supply Chain, as
it were. He stressed that if any one party loses
out this would negatively affect others in the
supply chain.

The Razak School of
Government Public Discourse
With globalisation making national economies
more linked together than ever before, it
becomes increasingly critical for Malaysia
to become better informed, equipped with
the high quality knowledge and insights that
are necessary to make the right decisions and
actions. As an academic institution, Universiti
Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK) strives to
play an active role in the dissemination and
discussion of knowledge. In line with this
objective, Unirazak’s Razak School of
Government (RSOG) organised a series of
public discourses, known as the Razak School
of Government Public Discourse, to be
delivered by well known personalities in their
respective field of studies.
YBhg. Prof. Datuk Dr. Md. Zabid Hj. Abdul
Rashid, President and Vice Chancellor of
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak, stressed the
mandate of UNIRAZAK in that, to better
secure the nation’s future, it has been tasked
with two items: firstly, to build and develop
successful entrepreneurs who contribute to the
nation economically and socially, and secondly,
to train and cultivate performing leaders for
both the public and private sectors.
With the above in mind, the RSOG Public
Discourse is a series of events which aims to
take a contemporary view and feature speakers
who are knowledgeable on current affairs and
trends. Their thoughts and experiences on our
present-day environment and economy can
help shed light on the appropriate actions to be
taken as we strive to develop a more prosperous
Malaysia, especially one that is more creative,
innovative, and entrepreneurial.

various academics, diplomats, representatives
from the private sector, government officials,
and students.
On 21st January 2010 the first of these Public
Discourses was presented by YBhg. Prof. Tan
Sri Dr. Sulaiman Bin Mahbob, Chairman
of the Malaysian Industrial Development
Authority (MIDA) and Adjunct Professor at
the Razak School of Government and titled
“Policy Response to Economic and Financial
Crises: Towards Effective Macroeconomic
Management in Malaysia”. Prof. Tan
Sri Dr. Sulaiman has vast experience in
macroeconomic analysis, national economic
planning, national economic management
and public sector financial administration, in
addition to poverty and income distribution
analysis. He was involved in the formulation of
the government’s fiscal policy, the preparation
of Ministry of Finance’s annual budget and
macroeconomic analysis for the Treasury’s
annual economic reports.

On 20th May 2010 UNIRAZAK organised the
2nd public discourse with career civil servant
Prof. Datuk Dr. Abdullah Abdul Rahman as
the featured speaker, and whose presentation

and lessons learnt in passing through several
severe economic and financial crises such
as the economic recession in 1980s, the
Asian economic crisis in 1997-1998 and
the most recent financial crisis due to the
USA housing market downturn. Each time,
the government has responded wisely using
effective macroeconomic policies to bring
the economy towards recovery. What lessons
can we learn from the Malaysian experience?
How is it different from the current economic
crisis? Has the government done enough

was titled “Leadership and Nation Building in
Malaysia”. With over 30 years of experience in
the Malaysian government, Prof. Datuk Dr.
Abdullah has an intimate knowledge of how
the government and leadership work. In his
lively and thoroughly entertaining speech, Prof
Datuk Dr Abdullah described and analysed the
many functions of leadership in the process
of nation-building, including its framework,
principles, and dynamics. He also proposed
the functions, requirements and prerequisites
that lead to effective leadership in Malaysia,
and gave special emphasis to the relationship
of the leadership with the public service in the
transformation process. He also highlighted
the processes involved in upholding the
principles of accountability and responsibility;
the processes involved in ensuring and
sustaining the leader’s credibility, and gaining
the people’s trust. He also compared the
achievements of the previous prime ministers
and their leadership styles and concludes with
the factors that need to be considered to be
effective Malaysian leaders. Spicing his speech
with many personal anecdotes and experiences,
his presentation was extremely well received
by the audience.

Professorial Lecture Series
As part of the university’s mission to promote
and disseminate the research and knowledge
of its professorial staff, Universiti Tun Abdul
Razak’s Research and Publications Department
organised the inaugural Professorial Lecture
Series. The series has thus far featured three
lectures, by Prof. Dr. Syed Omar bin Syed Agil,
Deputy Dean of Razak School of Government
(RSOG), Prof. Dr. Syed Malek Fakar Duani
Bin Syed Mustapha, former Dean of Faculty of
Information Technology (FIT), and Prof. Dr.
Ong Fon Sim, Dean of Graduate School of
Business (GSB). Each of the lectures attracted
various academics, students, and officials from
government agencies.

The 1st Professorial Lecture was held on 25th
February 2010 and featured Prof. Dr. Syed
Omar, whose lecture was titled “An Inquiry
into the Causes and Costs of Economic
Growth: What Policy Makers of Today
can Learn from the Muqaddimah of Ibn
Khaldun”. Prof. Dr. Syed Omar explains that
although published almost 7 centuries ago,
Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah, or Prolegomena
as it’s also known, is still relevant in modern
times, just as Adam Smith’s and Keynes’ works
are still relevant. He supported the theories
propounded by Ibn Khaldun with modern
empirical studies conducted by prominent
economists such as the relationship between
labour, population, tax, government spending,
ideas and technology, human capital, political
stability and religion with economic growth.
He also discussed the relationship between
economic growth and costs of economic
growth by looking at the impact of habits and
conspicuous spending as expounded by Ibn
Khaldun and supported by recent studies. Ibn
Khaldun’s Muqaddimah also includes the ideas
of moderate taxes and moderate government
spending to spur economic growth consistent
with the theories underlying Laffer and Rahn
Curves. Prof. Syed outlined the lessons which
policy makers can learn from the Muqaddimah
of Ibn Khaldun to promote economic growth
and minimize its resulting costs.
The 2nd Professorial Lecture was held on 22nd
April 2010 and featured Prof. Dr. Syed Malek,
whose presentation was titled “Evolutionary
of Building Knowledge Model - From
Content Knowledge to Social Knowledge”
In his lecture Prof. Dr. Syed Malek described
his experiences with Rheological Software
for assisting the rheologists to interpret and
analyse the viscometric data automatically and
QALSIC, an intelligent tutoring system for
performing automated reasoning on chemical
reactions on the high school level. Over the
years, the interest of building learning systems
has migrated from individual learning on
content knowledge to community learning
as the result of the recent Web 2.0 and Web
3.0 socio-technological wave. Community of
Practice (CoP) is chosen as the social learning
platform where the author has established the
computational framework to sense and support
the operative elements of the community
knowledge and learning. The migration work
from building learning system for content
knowledge to social knowledge has sparked
ever-changing technological challenges and
open research opportunities mainly in the area
of system design, knowledge modelling, social
networking and community learning.
The 3rd and latest Professorial Lecture was
held on 20th July 2010 and featured Prof.
Dr. Ong Fon Sim whose presentation was
titled “The Silver Market in Malaysia: What
Do We Know About Older Consumers’
Preferences and Behaviour?”. Prof. Dr. Ong’s
lecture focused on older people as consumers,
ageing and social protection for the elderly. She
also addressed consumer behaviour, looking
at comparative studies of younger and older
consumers.

case studies will have a greater impact on the
students in the classroom, as they involve realworld participants and real-world experiences.
I hope for these case studies to pave the way for
more interaction and a more immersive learning
experience in the classroom.”
“I hope that at least one quarter of our academic
staff will join the Club. We will also be sending
some of our case writers to Europe to learn not
just how to write case studies, but how to teach
them as well.” he added.
Since its formation in 2009 the club has
grown from 19 members to the current 44
active members, which makes it the club with
the highest number of members in the Case
Writer’s Association of Malaysia (CWAM).
The growth was propelled by the support from
the top management who felt that, as a body
of education, it was essential for UNIRAZAK
to build a library of case studies from which to
study and learn from, and for its academics to
share their research and findings.
Prof. Datuk Mahyuddin added, “All the cases
featured in UNIRAZAK’s case studies are based
on real life events and experience. They are
contributed by many individuals and reviewers
who are dedicated to produce high quality
and original case studies. This approach will
undeniably make learning more interesting,
lively and meaningful for our students. Our
Datuk President has always emphasized
on making the lecture room an active and
interesting place where effective learning can
take place.”

The club’s success can also be attributed to
the club’s initiatives and concerted efforts to
train new members as well as organising case
writing workshops. All of the members are
trained to write case studies in 2 different styles,
including the Harvard method. This enables
them to adapt their case studies according to
the requirements at hand.
There were also special role-plays in which
various members of UNIRAZAK’s Case Writer’s
Club dramatised one of their case studies for
the audience. Adapted from 2 case studies titled
“Regal Crown Hotel: To Yield or Not To Yield”
written by Prof. Dr. Nor Khomar and “The
Missing Amy” written by En Mislan Nenin and
Assoc Prof. Lynne Kathryn Norazit, they were
dramatised to fully illustrate the case studies
and to deliver them to the audience in a more
engaging, visual format.
In the future, UNIRAZAK’s Case Writer’s Club
will also participate in international conferences
and also conduct more role-playing events.
The 1st and 2nd volume of case studies is also
available for purchase for the general public.

Universiti Tun Abdul Razak Continues Strong
Student Intakes
The demand for placement at Universiti
Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK) continues
to grow as the university continues to roll
out new, innovative academic programmes.
Following 2009’s record-breaking intake
of 3988 newly registered students, the year
2010 welcomed 3882 more students into
UNIRAZAK’s faculties and schools. These
new students join UNIRAZAK’s current
student body of more than 10000 students,
and they registered for one of UNIRAZAK’s
62 academic programmes.
Professor Datuk Dr. Md. Zabid Abdul Rashid,
President & Vice Chancellor of Universiti Tun
Abdul Razak comments, “I’m happy to see that
we were able to keep close to last year’s record
numbers, seeing as how in 2010 we have rolled
out quite a few new programmes especially
in our postgraduate courses. Some of these
degree programmes are the first and only ones
of their kind in Malaysia. We have also started
admitting students into our latest school, the
Razak School of Government. Of course, due
to their unique and innovative nature, it will
take time for these new programmes to take
root and I look forward to new record-breaking
intakes very soon.”
UNIRAZAK’s partners and regional centres
across Malaysia assisted in registering the
eager new students as they came to enrol
in UNIRAZAK’s wide variety of academic
programmes, with the PINTAR Campus
in Petaling Jaya proving the most crowded
with 1455 new students. UNIRAZAK’s
new RAZAK campus registered 251 new
students, the bulk of whom registered in the
university’s Bank Rakyat School of Business
and Entrepreneurship and Graduate School
of Business.
In line with its vision that education is
for everyone, UNIRAZAK’s new students
registered for courses ranging from the
foundation level up to and including doctorate
degrees. The majority of students signed
on for the diploma and bachelor degree
programmes offered by UNIRAZAK’s seven
different schools and faculties. The Faculty
of Education and Social Sciences proved the
most popular, followed by Faculty of Business
Administration, Faculty of Hospitality and
Tourism Management, Faculty of Information
Technology, and Graduate School.
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak prides itself
in developing innovative programmes that
meet today’s needs especially in the fields
of entrepreneurship and leadership. They
were designed through close consultation
with partners in business and industry, the
public sectors and professionals. All academic
programmes are approved by the Malaysian
Higher Education Ministry (MOHE), and
are developed to meet the high standards
as required by the Malaysian Qualification
Agency (MQA).

Universiti Tun Abdul Razak welcomes
Egyptian government delegation
16th September 2009 - Universiti Tun Abdul
Razak welcomed and hosted an Egyptian
government delegation, which stayed at the
university’s invitation from the 7th to 11th
September 2009. Together with other fellow
government officials from various countries
such as Yemen, Senegal, and Somalia, the trip
was made in reciprocation for an earlier visit to
Egypt made by Universiti Tun Abdul Razak’s
senior management.
The delegation included senior officials from
Egypt’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, the
Egyptian Commercial Service, and the Internal
Trade Development and Investment Authority.
It also included participants from the Senegal
Embassy, Yemen Embassy, and Somalia.
The delegation also took the opportunity
to pay official visits to the university’s local
business partners such as PNB Berhad and
UEM Group Berhad. Official visits were also
made to local government agencies namely the
Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and
Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) and
the Economic Planning Unit (EPU).
The lectures and visits helped the delegation
to better understand the various guidelines,
policies, and procedures that guide Malaysian
businesses and government agencies in their
decision-making and action processes. This
knowledge will in turn be conveyed to their
respective countries for evaluation and perhaps
future implementation.
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak was extremely
delighted to host the delegation and engage
in these information-sharing presentations.
These bridge-building sessions bode well
for future opportunities and collaborations
between Universiti Tun Abdul Razak and
its prospective educational, business, and
government partners.
The crux of the visit centred upon an exchange
of ideas and information in the form of
various lectures delivered by Universiti Tun
Abdul Razak. The university was especially
involved with five special presentations that
were delivered by the university’s deans and
professors, revolving around a diverse range of
business, management, and economic topics.
The presentation topics were Leadership
in Organisation, Malaysian Economy,
Entrepreneurship and Small Business in
Malaysia, Shaping the Global Economic
System: The Role of Islamic Economics and
Finance, and Innovation in Malaysia.

New Partnerships for the Future
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK), as
one of Malaysia’s leading private universities,
constantly looks to build new relationships
and partnerships with other academic and
professional bodies. Some of its esteemed
partners include the Malaysian Ministry
of Defence, Federal Land Development
Authority (FELDA), and Bank Rakyat Berhad.
UNIRAZAK also counts the International
Centre for Education in Islamic Finance
(INCEIF), Amanah Raya Berhad and
KarangKraf Sdn Bhd amongst its many local
partners. UNIRAZAK’s 20+ international

School, France, and Maxwell School of Syracuse

In the past year UNIRAZAK has taken steps for
further collaboration by exploring partnerships
with many more academic and professional
bodies, and has signed MOUs with 5 more
organisations. These are Malaysian Association
of Tax Accountants (MATA), Perbadanan
Usahawan Nasional Berhad (PUNB), Chartered
Tax Institute Malaysia (CTIM), the Ministry
of Human Resource (MOHR), and Cairo
University.
UNIRAZAK and M.A.T.A. intend to cooperate
in the establishment and implementation
of Special Advanced Training Schemes and
Special Graduate Training Schemes in the
field of taxation. This includes the setting up
and organisation of workshops, seminars, and
conferences. UNIRAZAK will provide trainers
in the field of taxation and M.A.T.A. will
provide the practical training programs to be
implemented. The Special Advanced Training
Scheme will be conducted for the M.A.T.A.

members, thus enabling the tax agents to
remain informed and educated in the field of
taxation. The Special Graduate Training Scheme
will place UNIRAZAK graduates in selected
M.A.T.A. member companies for practical
trainings and internships.
Additionally, UNIRAZAK’s MOU with CTIM
also signals their intent to work together in
the area of tax education. Both parties will
share information, facilities, instructors, and
resources relating to updates on tax matters and
tax related courses conducted in their respective
organisations.
UNIRAZAK’s MOU with PUNB is a result of
both parties recognising the need to collaborate
in research & development and consultancy
activities, training and attachment programmes,
access of data and facilities, establishment of
young entrepreneurs as well as participation in
PUNB’s PROSPER Siswazah Scheme.
Cairo University is the oldest and most
prestigious university in Egypt - it has
contributed to the Arab communities on
knowledge and science, providing job
opportunities to Egyptian and Arab students.
The MOU signals the start of a close working
relationship between the two higher education
bodies.
Finally, UNIRAZAK has also signed an
MOU with the Ministry of Human Resource
(MOHR) in which the two parties declared
their interest to work together with respect
to exploring a closer working relationship /
collaboration in research and development and
consultancy activities, training and attachment
programmes, access of data and facilities.
UNIRAZAK and MOHR will also undertake
joint training programmes or workshops for
the development of employees to be identified
by the Department of Skills Development.
UNIRAZAK will provide consultancy and
advisory services and such similar activities for
the benefit of the development of existing and
prospective vocational training officers. They
will also work together to undertake research
and studies areas to be identified by both parties.
18th January 2010 - Universiti Tun Abdul
Razak (UNIRAZAK) signed a Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) with Perbadanan
Usahawan Nasional Bhd (PUNB), in which
both parties expressed their desire to develop
stronger ties and a closer working relationship.
The MOU was signed by Prof. Datuk Dr.
Md. Zabid Haji Abdul Rashid, President &
Vice Chancellor of UNIRAZAK, and Datuk
Mohd Nasir Bin Ahmad, Chief Executive
Officer of PUNB, at UniRazak’s new Razak
Campus at Capital Square. It was witnessed
by Ailinton Binti Isahak, Director (Special
Project - Institutional Relations) of UniRazak,
and En. Dzulkifli Fadzilah, General Manager,
Investment Division, PUNB.
The MOU is a result of both parties
recognising the need to collaborate in research
& development and consultancy activities,
training and attachment programmes, access
of data and facilities, establishment of young

Universiti Tun Abdul Razak’s Razak School
of Government (RSOG) is the prototypical
school that offers specialised courses related
to government service, public policy, and
leadership. The first of its kind in Malaysia
and emulated by others, UNIRAZAK’s RSOG
provides specialised and unique academic
programmes designed to meet the demands
of the public in terms of knowledgeable
human capital that is capable of managing

In the course of developing its long term

Weaving Lifestyle into Learning
If the thought of conventional classroom
teaching immediately sends you to slumber
land or if having to listen to a teacher drone
on and on is your idea of comatose boredom,
entrepreneurs might be really pleased to note
that the Centre for Executive Education (CEE)
of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak is giving learning
a whole new meaning.
CEE has recently introduced a Lifestyle Learning
concept which encompasses learning by sharing
knowledge, networking and leisure moments.
“Our audiences who are successful SME owners
have a wealth of experience and at this university
we believe that experience is the primary
education. We don’t want the learning sessions
to be very academic. We will take the learning
out of the classroom to much more exciting
locations,” said Associate Prof Dr. Ibrahim
Zahari, the director of CEE.
Dr. Ibrahim went on to expound on knowledge,
network and leisure explaining that there will be
sharing sessions conducted where entrepreneurs
can learn from each other.
“Our role is two-fold, we will facilitate such
sharing sessions between the SME participants
who will provide the practical knowledge and
we will get experts from within our university
and outsource some from specific industries to
share their theoretical knowledge with them. The
content development and design will be from a
panel of experts. We will also have a theme for
each programme. This way the sessions will be
very interactive,” explained Ibrahim.
The knowledge sharing sessions will be held at
leisure settings as opposed to a classroom. CEE
wants their participants to have fun, and while
learning, network since the interactive sessions
will be held at relaxed and casual places such as
cruises, chalets in mountains and secluded
islands. It’s all about disseminating knowledge
in an exciting and enjoyable manner.
The whole purpose of Lifestyle Learning
is to create an innovative leader with an
entrepreneurial mind, which according to
Dr. Ibrahim’s knowledge includes the three
components of leadership, entrepreneurship and
innovation. To help achieve this, the sessions
will be customised according to the needs of
the SME in question. Hence the duration of the
sessions are flexible and stress free.
Targeting successful entrepreneurs with highend lifestyles, Ibrahim revealed that initially
the sessions would be carried out regionally.
A typical scenario would be as follows; a
programme could first be conducted in Vietnam
and participants can visit entrepreneurs there
and also visit their factories. Networking with
the Vietnamese businessmen will be ongoing
throughout the visit and at the same time
they could go golfing and sightseeing together.
Dinners will be organised with each other.
At the end of the session, Malaysian SMEs will
know how Vietnamese SMEs work in Vietnam.
Later, once they are already familiar with the
workings of SMEs regionally, the visits can be
organized on even more distant shores such as
Europe. Anything is possible as the programmes
are customised. If it is an ICT group, the sessions
could even be held at Silicon Valley, USA!
To begin with, sessions will be targeted on one
field each quarter. For example, at first CEE will
focus on a specialized industry such as tourism.
The second quarter might be on ICT, the third
on health care and so on.
“We want everyone out there to know that we
are educational institution that offers something
like this. We are different. We are doing this
because we want to be close to the industrial
players. The wealth of experience that SMEs
have is the real thing and we can transfer this
knowledge to the classroom,” pointed out
Dr. Ibrahim.

Hands Over Zakat Contribution
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak continues to fulfill
its commitment to the community by handing
over its Zakat contribution for its financial year
2007 to Lembaga Zakat Selangor, MAIS (LZS)
with a cheque amounting to RM116,950.
The cheque was presented by Prof. Datuk Dr.
Md. Zabid Haji Abdul Rashid, President and
Vice Chancellor of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak,
to Dato’ Dr. Haji Hassan Haji Mohamed Ali,
Chairman Jawatankuasa Tetap Hal Ehwal Islam,

Awam Selangor, in a ceremony held at the
Quality Hotel.

(Unirazak) donated 2 cows to Rumah Anak
Yatim Sungai Manggis in Banting. Another cow
was donated by Unirazak staff, and a further 6
from other sponsors making 9 cows in total.
Unirazak has a history of supporting the
orphanage and took special note to take time

off to visit during the holy month of Ramadhan
earlier this year. During last year’s Eid Al
Adha, Unirazak staff pooled their resources to
contribute 1 cow. Touched by the staff’s sincerity,
Unirazak management was inspired to join and
contribute 2 cows for this year’s Eid Al Adha.
Rumah Anak Yatim Sungai Manggis is home
to about 50 orphans ranging in age from 3 to
17 years old. The meat from the donated cows
will be shared amongst the orphans as well as
approximately 125 local underprivileged people.
Some of the meat was immediately used to
cook beef soup and rendang to be served to the
orphans, underprivileged, and visiting guests.
According to En Hisham Abdul Karim, Head
of Department for Corporate Communication
and Public Affairs, “We are very happy that last
year’s donation was not a one-time affair, and
that we could increase last year’s donation from
1 cow to 3 cows. This has enabled us to increase
the scope of our donation and feed not only the
orphans but also to extend help towards the local
underprivileged people.”

donations are much appreciated as it is not easy
feeding 50 growing children! We’d like to thank

7th September 2009 - As part of its CSR
program, Universiti Tun Abdul Razak staff paid
a visit to Rumah Anak Yatim Sungai Manggis
in Banting to spend some quality time with
the orphans and residents. The university has a
history of providing support to the orphanage
and took special note to take time off to visit
during the holy month of Ramadhan, namely
during Nuzul Al-Quran which is also a Selangor
state holiday.
Approximately 15 staff members and volunteers
took the 1.5 hour car ride to visit Rumah Anak
Yatim Sungai Manggis, which is home to about
50 orphans ranging in age from 3 to 17 years old.
This was the first visit for some staff members,
and both parties took the opportunity to get to
know one another better.
According to En. Hisham Abdul Karim, Head
of Department for Corporate Communication
and Public Affairs, “We were very happy that we
visited during the month of Ramadhan and were
able to spend some quality time with them and
see how they are doing. As Banting is relatively
out of the way, it made more sense for us to visit
them rather than bus them into KL. This was
our first buka puasa with the orphans, the first
of many to come we hope, and it was a pleasure
to meet with them again.”
As part of its visit, Universiti Tun Abdul Razak
also donated to the orphanage some much
needed financial assistance and goods totalling
approximately RM12,000. This was given in the
form of duit raya or holiday cash gifts, money
for new clothes for the upcoming end-of-month
festivities, and also miscellaneous gifts in the
form of other clothes such as everyday wear,
headscarves, sarongs, and others. Additionally,
as the visit was made during the Muslim
fasting month of Ramadhan, the university
also provided a comprehensive catered meal
for the breaking of the fast or buka puasa, The
university’s staff members and orphans also
performed their obligatory prayers together in
congregation.

The ceremony is graced by the presence of the
university’s chancellor YABhg. Tun Hajjah
Rahah Tan Sri Haji Mohd. Noah and YABhg.
Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, who is the
university’s Pro Chancellor.
The ceremony also witnessed Kapt. Hamid bin
Ahmad [3010473] who graduated with Bachelor
in Information Technology and 721788 Kpl
U Yuszaizie Mohd Pauzee who graduated in
Diploma of Management received Anugerah
Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak Award for
their academic excellence.
In addition, there were also 2 awards for
Anugerah Panglima Angkatan Tentera and 11
awards for Best Student have been given to
graduates for their accomplishment in their
study.
Glorious Ceremony for 292
Graduates of K-Force Programme
A total of 292 students received their graduation
scrolls during the half day event of 2nd K-Force
Special Convocation Ceremony which held
on 13th June 200 at the Pusat Pameran dan
Konvensyen MATRADE.
Also present during the event was Prof. Datuk Dr.
Md. Zabid Haji Abd. Rashid, Vice Chancellor
and President of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak as
well as members of University’s Management
Committee, members of University’s Senate,
deans and staff from the Universiti Tun Abdul
Razak.
K-Force Programme is a collaboration effort
between Universiti Tun Abdul Razak and
Ministry of Defence to enable the Armed Forces
Personnel to pursue their education through
the distance-learning mode for a number of
programmes offered by Universiti Tun Abdul
Razak.
The programme, which was launched in 2002,
has successfully produced 316 graduates during

10th Convocation Ceremony
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysia’s
leading university for innovation, leadership,
and entrepreneurship recently held its 10th
convocation ceremony during a half-day event
at the Putrajaya International Convention
Centre on 30th October 2010. 1753 graduates
ranging from the diploma, bachelor, master,
and doctorate levels received their scrolls,
continuing the trend of strong growth that
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak has enjoyed since
its inception in 1997. The ceremony was
graced by the university’s Chancellor, YABhg
Tun (Dr.) Hajjah Rahah Tan Sri Haji Mohd
Noah and Pro Chancellors YABhg Tun Ahmad
Sarji Abdul Hamid and YBhg Tan Sri Andrew
Sheng Len Tao.
Zateel Mawazini Adzrina binti Hossini,
graduating with a Bachelor of Education
(Hons), was the recipient of this year’s
Chancellor Award, bestowed in recognition
of her achievements in both the academic and
non-academic arenas. Meanwhile Anita a/p
Loganathan received the President’s Award
in recognition of academic excellence and
graduated with a Bachelor of Accounting
(Hons). Best Student Awards (By Faculty)
were awarded to Ong Ban Kiat, Alicia Carol
White, Patricia a/p Devenandan, and Chow
Soon Kong, from the Faculties of Information
Technology, Business Administration,
Education and Social Sciences, and Hospitality
and Tourism Management respectively.
Prof Datuk Dr Md Zabid Hj Abdul Rashid,
President and Vice-Chancellor, said, “We are
extremely delighted to witness the graduation
of these students, whose hard work and
dedication has paved the way for their success
today. We are even more delighted that
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak has assisted in
shaping Malaysia’s next innovators, leaders,
and entrepreneurs. The large number of high
calibre students is testament to the quality
of our programs - in total we have now seen
the graduation of over 12,000 students from
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak since our opening
in 1997, not including the professional
trainings that we have provided for numerous
managers and executives.”
UNIRAZAK’s convocation ceremony also
conferred an Honorary Doctorate Degree in
Entrepreneurship to YBhg Dato’ Hussamuddin
Yaacub, current CEO and Managing Director
of Kumpulan Media KarangKraf Sdn Bhd.
Dato’ Hussamuddin embodies the essence
of the economic and social entrepreneur that
UNIRAZAK tries to develop. He built and
owns his own conglomerate and also dedicates
his time to philanthropy, having established 2
trust funds.
Of the 1753 graduating students, 74 are
postgraduates, 1024 will be graduating with
bachelor degrees, and 655 with diplomas.

The half-day event was also attended by
Presidents and Vice Chancellors of other higher
learning institutions and members of the
university’s Board of Directors, Management
Committee, Senate, and academics.
