PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION JUNE 2006 3
President’s Column
Gerade Aus!
By Joe Carastro
The BIG EVENT this month is the new member picnic. Thanks to
the dedication of Gary Gasperino and his merry band of elves, Santa
Barbara Region will be celebrating our new members of the last two
years. This event is very significant for all of us, as it reflects the dynamic
nature of our membership, whereby today’s new member is tomorrow’s
club officer. Our region, and PCA as a national organization, have both
shown a short evolutionary cycle, reflecting that we are less concerned
with maintaining a “corporate” way of doing things than exploring new
avenues for expressing our common Porsche mania.
SBR would like to recognize our members and offspring graduating
from the various levels of academia. Coming from family whose sole
claim to fame was the ability to keep going to school, I offer my personal
congratulations and best wishes for your future.
Following the June SB breakfast, I will be departing for a 72 hour
trip to Germany to take delivery of a Cayman S. After the ceremonies
Monday the 12th in Zuffenhausen, the Cayman and I will be departing
for Pfaffenhausen and the RUF factory to drop it off for its conversion
to SUPERCROC specifications. The RUF Company has already delivered
a Cayman with a 3.8 S engine to a very delighted French customer and
mine will apparently be the first US car to be modified. An upcoming
article will contain further details. Part of Porsche’s European Delivery
Program includes a tour of the factory so I’ll be checking on the progress
of two cars for SBR members.
Porschelly yours,
Joe
Attention All Members:
We Need Your
E-Mail Address!
Beginning with the July issue, Der Auspuff will become
a bi-monthly publication. It was a tough decision based
on mounting publication costs. We had two ways to take
Der Auspuff – back to black and white on copy paper, or
an enhanced bi-monthly newsletter with color. We chose to
retain our popular format, and actually improve each issue.
That’s right; we are adding eight more pages of content
(four of them in color) to each issue. We are confident you
will be impressed.
In the “off months” we will be sending you electronic
correspondence. As a result, we need your e-mail address to
keep you addressed of events and happenings in the club.
(For your privacy, the Santa Barbara region does not sell
or distribute our e-mail list to anyone.)

Editor’s Column
Do yourself a favor take a Boxster for a spin!
Words by Michael C. Harley
First, let me apologize for the stunning picture of the brand-new 997
GT3 that is fighting these words for space on this page. I saw this image
on the Porsche Media Site, and I realized it HAD to go in this issue.
(The first club member who takes me for a ride in a 997 GT3 gets their
Porsche on the cover of Der Auspuff - how’s that for a bribe?) Check out
page 26 for more info on the GT3.
Wow, was I impressed with the Boxster (embarrassingly enough,
I had never driven one)! That little two-seater looks great, sounds
wonderful, is a blast on the corners, and – in Speed Yellow – gets plenty
of looks. I challenge some of you die-hard 911 folk to take a 986/987
for lap around the block. It will change you. Special thanks to Richard
Kolosky, GM at Rusnak/Westlake Porsche, for being kind enough to lend
us one for the story and photography. See page 14 for the write-up.
One last note – I am looking for some help. Der Auspuff needs
a few “apprentices” to help with some of the editing and data
compilation (calendar, member photography, etc...). If you are
interested in this exciting volunteer position, please drop me a note:

6 JUNE 2006 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION
Monthly Board Meeting
Minutes from May 3, 2006
The Board of Directors held its May 3, 2006
meeting at Enrique’s Restaurant Present
were Joe Carastro, Gary Gasperino, Mike
Harley, George and Mary Barrett, Barry
and Valerie Weinstein, Martin and Ankie
Janson, Wayne Grecko, and Mike & Karen
Turek. The meeting was called to order at
7:00 PM.
Secretary: Karen Turek read the minutes
of the April meeting. The minutes were
approved with the following correction:
Beginning in July, the Der Auspuff will be
32 pages of black and white, plus 8 pages of
color - totaling 40 pages. The Minutes were
approved as corrected.
Treasurer: George handed out the
Treasurer’s report.
Membership: Santa Barbara Region
membership seems to be holding steady.
Editor: Mike Harley is checking into getting
distribution time shortened with the mail
service. With the bulk mail, distribution
can take anywhere from 1-3 weeks. If at all
possible, please have all pictures and articles
submitted by the 10th of each month.
Contact Mike Harley to notify him of any
upcoming events we can add to our calendar.
Advertiser: All advertisers are paid up for
the year. Lynn Kuchera is looking for someone
to take his place next year – any interest?
Rally: Joe Boucher’s rally and rally school
were very successful events this past month.
Goodie Store: Mike Hodson was able to
purchase $300.00 worth of goods from the
PCA Distribution event to supply our goodie
store.
Autocross: Mike Harley is looking into
other options to complement our Autocross
events - such as Driver Education event on a
race track, possibly joining another region to
partnership for this type of driving event.
Concours: Joe Carastro is looking for
approximately 3 people to head up the
Concours as he will be in Germany during
that time. Plans for the ’07 SBR Concours was
looked into by Gary Gasperino to be held at
the Santa Barbara City College Campus.
Meetings/Events: Gary Gasperino is
heading a committee for the new members
picnic. A meeting will be held soon to finalize
plans for this event. Mike Hodson is looking
into business card holders and/or mugs for
new members for this event.
President: Nothing new to report.
Old Business: Mike Harley reported that the
cost for 1,000 business cards is approximately
$200. No motion made to purchase any at
this time. Timing equipment for the autocross
has been purchased. If this equipment is not
used within the next year, we will consider reselling it. Our region’s ten 2-way radios need
to be retrieved from Steve Lutz.
New Business: We as a board need to start
recruiting for upcoming vacancies for next
year.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM.

PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION JUNE 2006 7
Camarillo Breakfast Meeting
A Sea of Porsches
Words by Barry and Valerie Weinstein
Photos by Max Sluiter
May 6, 2006 - A sea of automobiles covered
the grass in front of the Way Point Café, as
one of the largest turnouts for our Camarillo
Breakfast took place in May. There were so
many vehicles that if you looked down, you
could barely see any greenery between the
cars!
One-hundred and fifty people in eightytwo automobiles (mostly Porsches but a
number of “alternate vehicles”) attended our
Breakfast Club at the airport. SUV’s, Ferrari’s,
and at least a half dozen or more 356’s,
were parked side by side at the airport. This
was “Bring Your Other Car to the Breakfast
Meeting” day. All got in safely, and all left
without one more ding, scratch, or mark
on their vehicles (other than those they
collectively brought in with them). What a
testament to the driving and parking ability
of Porsche owners, as well as to the skills
of those directing us into our parking slots.
Mike Turek and Dave Stone have been our
parking experts for years and have honed
their talents and abilities to a very fine
point.
Joe Carastro, our President, was in Las
Vegas at an orthodontic convention, so Vice
President Gary Gasperino led the meeting in
Joe’s stead. Gary, who is organizing our New
Member’s Picnic (scheduled for Saturday,
June 24th), started off by inviting everyone
to attend this event. It’s a lot of fun and
always draws a large crowd. If you haven’t
registered by the time you read this please
do so. You and your family will assuredly have
a great day. A registration form can be found
in this Der Auspuff. The cost for a full day of
fun, including all the food and drink you can
handle, raffle and door prizes, games for the
kids, guest speakers, great camaraderie and
much, much more, is minimal. Those of you
who have been with the club for two years
or less (after June 2004), are considered “new
members” and the cost is only $5.00 per
person. Children under 12 are $5.00 as well.
All other members pay $15.00.
It was my turn, so I spoke about our
activities – the Progressive Dinner this
month, and reiterated Gary’s invitation to
sign up for the New Members’ Picnic in June.
After finishing with my spiel, I sat down and
Valerie (my wife, and Activities Co-Chair,
told me to get back up and let everyone
know that the New Members’ picnic is for
everyone! Not once did I mention that ALL
PCA/SBR members are invited – not just the
new members. Oh well, that’s why we have
Co-Chairpersons – one to make the mistakes
and the other to catch them.
hours with you on our activities, events,
drives, breakfasts, tours, and parties.
A few prospective members also showed
up. They were Doug and Nancy Maletz, from
Thousand Oaks. The Maletz’s drove up in
their 2002 Porsche Boxster. Greg and Cory
Elkis, prospective members, came in a 2001
Porsche 996. Finally, Carlos Delarios from
Calabasas drove up in his 2001 Porsche 996.
Thank you for joining us. We hope to be
welcoming you to our future meetings and
events as “new members” now that you have
had a chance to look our club over. Thanks
A 993 shares shade with the Italians (is that a Piaggio Avanti P180 on the tarmac?)
As usual; Dave Stone did a masterful job
greeting the new comers and recording
their names, cars and other data for the club
records.
A lot of new members attended this
breakfast. Kevin Crane, from Malibu, came
in his 1997 Porsche 993. Robert Barnhart
drove all the way from Pasadena in his 1962
Porsche 356. Greg Golenburg, from Agoura,
drove up in a 2004 Porsche 996 Cabriolet.
Craig and Saundra Kish, of Westlake Village,
arrived in their 2003 Porsche 996 C4S. Simi
Valley resident, Doug Brown, parked his
1995 Porsche 993 Cabriolet in front of the
Way Point. Last, but not least, new members
Falin and Karin Shieh, from Calabasas, joined
us in their 2000 Porsche 996.
We are happy to have you as participating
members, and welcome you to our club.
We’re all looking forward to getting to know
you better and spending many enjoyable
8 JUNE 2006 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION
for coming.
Finally, a there were a few long-time
members who came to breakfast. Bob Roes,
a past SBR/PCA President, and Susan Sheller
from Santa Barbara joined us. Bruce Clemens,
from Malibu Lake, also was in attendance.
Max Slitter, our staff photographer
probably lost a few pounds running around
and trying to catch up with and photograph
all dozen plus of the new members and guests
for his photo contributions to Der Auspuff.
This was especially difficult when the crowd
was so large that it was hard to find even
people you know, let alone someone you’ve
never seen before. But Max, besides being a
talented photographer, is a hard worker, as
well and as always, did a great job recording
on film the newcomers to our club.
Thanks for your time and dedication, Max,
and thanks to all of our PCA/SBR volunteers
who make this the wonderful club that it is!
Santa Barbara Breakfast Meeting
Real Enthusiasts Aren’t Afraid of Drizzle!
Words by Mike Turek
Photos by Mike Turek and Max Sluiter
May 13, 2006 - On Friday, the day before the
monthly SBR breakfast on the pier at Santa
Barbara, I spent about 3 hours “Nickizing”
my 1997 993 C4S. Anyone acquainted with
Nick Liakas knows what “Nickizing” involves:
stripe wax, clay bar, wax, and then detail
your beloved Porsche. When I awoke on
Saturday I was disappointed to find gray,
it. Mike Hodson expose’d some of the Goodie
Store’s latest items available for sale.
First timer and perspective member, Eric
Munck drove his 924 turbo from Fillmore.
Eric has owned Porsches for several years
and is considering joining the SBR region.
Mike and Diane MacDonell brought friend
Rick Lewellyin, of Los Angeles, to visit our

drizzly skies and wet pavement on which to
drive my meticulously detailed car, oh well.
Upon arrival at Stearn’s Wharf, Karen and I
were pleased to find 45 other enthusiasts
that had braved the less-than-ideal weather.
There were only 23 Porsches parked on the
pier, which indicates to us that there were
some alternate vehicles driven due to the
drizzly weather.
Joe Carastro could not attend, so Vice
President Gary Gasperino filled in and
welcomed all to the mornings festivities.
Barry and Valerie Weinstein were out of town,
so Gary announced upcoming activities.
Nick Liakas expounded on the upcoming
Missions Tour of Santa Barbara County. This
event sounds like a great time, so don’t miss
region’s breakfast meeting. Rosa Maria
Espinoza, of Santa Barbara, was a guest of
member Frank Miceli on this gray May day.
Nick Liakas’ daughter Stacy, grandson Nickie,
and nephew Paul also took time out of their
day to enjoy breakfast on the pier with the
SBR group. With the addition of several of our
SBR women retiring, a suggestion was made
to start a women only R.U.F.(Retired and
Unemployed Folks) type group. They might
be known as the Porsche Mademoiselle
Society (P.M.S. group). As you might suspect,
a hardy round of laughter could be heard
throughout the restaurant! Karen and I look
forward to seeing you at the next SBR event.

not favor products in this segment of the
market, Porsche’s V-10 powered supercar
has sold in unprecedented numbers.
More than 1,270 Carrera GTs have been
sold since its introduction in late 2003.
To date, 604 have found homes in North
America. This figure represents a greater
number than the total production of the
McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo, and Pagani
Zonda models combined.
The Carrera GT is a storied member
in a line of limited edition supercars, a
lineage born from Porsche’s experience
at the highest levels of world-class
endurance racing. The Carrera GT owes
its product modeling as an exclusive,
racing-derived, ultra high performance
roadcar to Porsche’s first supercar, the
959. Storming the world automotive
stage at the Frankfurt Auto Show in Carrera GT production line
1985, the 959 was intended for “Group B”
The Carrera GT’s wide use of cutting edge
racing competition, and served as Porsche’s
technology flagship—a rolling paradigm of materials prompted Popular Science magazine
automotive performance from which future in 2003 to name the exotic machine the “Best
of What’s New” for its advanced technology
models could draw even loftier benchmarks.
The Carrera GT supercar also had its genesis and chassis development. The Carrera GT’s

that are
incredibly light,
but strong. The entire chassis weighs just over
220 pounds (100 kg), and is mated to equally
esoteric materials including forged magnesium
wheels, and the staggering 380mm Porsche
Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB®).
Thanks to near fanatical attention
to weight savings, the performance
results are stunning. The Carrera GT will
accelerate from a standing start to 62
mph (100 km/h) in only 3.9 seconds, at
which point, things really get going. The
99 mph (160 km/h) mark arrives in less
than seven seconds, 124 mph (200 km/h)
in under 10 seconds, and the Carrera GT
can achieve a top test-track speed of 205
mph (330 km/h). Despite the otherworldly
performance, the Carrera GT is still one
of few supercars that can be driven every
day. Traction control, air conditioning,
GPS navigation, a Bose audio system,
and a fitted, 5-piece, matched-leather
luggage set are standard equipment.
The Porsche Carrera GT first went on sale
in North America on January 31, 2004,
and pricing for this ultimate Porsche
supercar is $440,000 (USD).

986 // 987
Photos and Words by Michael C. Harley
It was late 1996, and Porsche was selling just one
model in the United States - the Type 993 “911” Carrera.
Enter the Type 986, the Porsche “Boxster.”
Unlike the 911, the 1997 Boxster was a design
throwback to the Porsche Spyder and Speedster. The
sleek Boxster was a mid-engine, two-seater convertible
with a cloth top. With a 2.5-liter water-cooled four-valve
flat-6 good for 201 horsepower, acceleration was decent
(0-60 in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph), but
handling was superb.
With the engine located mid-ship, hidden (yes,
hidden) in front of the rear wheels, the balance was near
perfect over each axle (especially when compared to
a 911). A short wheelbase, low center of gravity, and a
comfortably low curb weight of less than 3,000 pounds
(the 997 tips the scales about 200 pounds heavier)
allowed the Boxster to dance through corners.
Looking sleek (with a low drag coefficient of .31) and
sexy, and cutting the price of the 911 by nearly $25,000,
the $43,000 base price of the Boxster made it a hit. The
two-seaters flew off the showroom floors as quickly as
they were unloaded from the boats. In fact, for the first
another 8, pushing it to 258 horsepower. The plastic rear
window was replaced with glass, and a few cosmetic
details changed.
When Porsche introduced the new Type 997 “911” in
2004 at the Paris Motor Show, the second generation
Boxster, a 2005, was parked alongside. Though it sported
a new type designation, Type 987, changes to the Boxster
were not revolutionary, but more evolutionary. There
was a new nose and fascia with headlights now similar
to the 997. It was riding on bigger wheels and tires,
and equipped with the latest safety features including
standard PSM. Addressing complaints about the interior
space, the 987 sported an entirely new cockpit (with
upgraded materials) and slightly more room to make
‘larger people’ a bit more comfortable.
The big news was another bump in horsepower. The
987 Boxster “S” now accelerated impressively with a 3.2liter flat-6 turning 280 hp (good for 0-60 in 5.2 seconds
and a top speed of 167 mph). Once again, the little
brother got a bump too. It was still a 2.7-liter flat-6, but it
was now boasting 240 horsepower.
Finally, the Boxster was all grown up.
few years, used Boxsters were appreciating on the used
car market! To keep up with the demand, Porsche was
forced to open a second Boxster plant in Finland.
In 2000, the 986 received a shot of adrenaline when
the “Boxster S” was introduced. Besides the engine
displacement increase (now a 3.2-liter flat-6 with 252
hp), the “S” model also enjoyed a new 6-speed manual
transmission, larger brakes, upgraded suspension,
upgraded wheels and tires, Litronic xenon headlamps,
and twin exhaust pipes. Not to leave its brother behind,
the base Boxster also got a bump in horsepower (the
2.7-liter flat-6 now made 217 hp).
In 2003, both Boxsters were blessed with a few more
horses . The base model gained 11, while the “S” grabbed
The Speed Yellow beauty on the cover is the ‘base
model’ 2006 987 Boxster with a Sports Package and
several select options (it’s got that cool Sport Chrono
thing going on). MSRP is about $55,000 – and it’s worth
every one of those nickels.
So, where does the Boxster fit in the big picture?
The Boxster isn’t about blasting away at the lights,
or winning the quarter mile dash. The Boxster is about
dropping the power top in 12 seconds, stepping on
the gas and hearing the wonderful flat-6 sing out of
the center exhaust. It’s about effortlessly cruising down
Pacific Coast Highway, smelling the ocean breezes, and
passing sports bikes on Mulholland during the drive
home.

Goodie Store Report
May 2006
By Mike and Pamuela Hodson
If you haven’t noticed
yet, with the Memorial Day
Holiday behind us the
Summer driving season
has officially arrived
in Southern California.
Despite the current oil
market, which makes both
the price and smell of gasoline
nauseating, now is the prime time
to take those cars out for some welldeserved exercise.
At the time of this writing,
Unleaded Premium (the
desired diet for most
of our Porsches) was
approximately
$3.60
per
gallon.
While
certainly filling up is
painful, we can be glad
for two things: First - we
are not in the Hummer
Club (way worse mileage)!
Second - we are not in Europe
or Asia, where $3.60 is a bargain!
On a happier note, all is well at the Goodie
Store. Ladies and Men’s tank tops are starting
to appear regularly at events, the Ladies’ pastel
colors are particularly flattering with the Santa
Barbara Region logo strategically embroidered.
For the guys it is all about black, navy or grey,
leave the plumage to the other half.
As always if we don’t have it we can probably
get it; tank tops, shirts, jackets, whatever. Bring
that favorite garment in to us, and we can put
either the PCA National Logo or the Santa
Barbara Region onto most anything.
Coming up this month is the New Members’
Picnic, organized by Vice President
Gary Gasperino. Gary has been
planning for months to ensure
that New Members and all other
members enjoy a fine day of good
food, camaraderie, and great cars.
The Goodie Store will be
attending with a large selection
of merchandise, including the
“Official
Porsche
Selection”
items recently purchased at the
PCNA Tour event. Stop by, and
see what kinds of items we
have, as well as the “bargain
basement” closeout section
for those odds and ends let
over from prior events, all
priced to sell… sell… sell... (No
plaid pants, I promise.)
2006 marks the third year the
Pamuela and I have been co-chairs of
the Goodie Store. At the end of this year we
are going to be turning over the reins
to new people, and are interesting
in talking to anyone who is
interested in the position.
The
most
common
question is “How much room
do I need in my garage?”
Fortunately, the only large
item to store is the canopy,
which we are willing to keep
in our hangar indefinitely. The
rest of the merchandise easily
stores in a small space.
Anyone who has seen us in action
realizes that The Goodie Store is a fun,
rewarding way to meet lots of great members,
while at the same time helping the Club to
put on great events. If you have ever thought
about it, let us know, and we’ll be glad to chat
and answer any and all questions.
We look forward to seeing you at an
upcoming event.
Best Regards,
Mike and Pamuela

PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION JUNE 2006 17
SBR’s Malibu Fun Run
Paradise Cove welcomes the PCA
Photos and Words by Nicolas Liakas
One of the joys of membership in the
Santa Barbara Region is the opportunity
to participate in many wonderful driving
experiences on roads that are located in our
back yard but which we seldom navigate on
our own. The club’s Malibu Fun Run held on
March 18, 2006 presented the attendees with
rewarding driving, shopping and eating. This
event was planned and executed by Gary and
Phyllis Weaver, and their preparation paid off
handsomely.
When most people think of Malibu, they
conjure visions of long sandy beaches and
Pacific Ocean cozying itself up to the private
estates of celebrity multi-millionaires. While
all that is true, we Porschephiles recognize
that there is another majestic side to this
community: the surrounding mountains
known as the Malibu Hills and the Santa
Monica mountains.
Our March 18 adventure included the
mansions and the beaches, but concentrated
on the challenging and awe-inspiring
mountain trails. These roads were made for our
cars and our driving habits! Eighty of us took
part in 49 Porsches, and we embarked on the
journey that tested the skills of the drivers and
the navigators and culminated in a luncheon
feast on the beach.
The weather was drop dead gorgeous.
Bright sunshine and a gentle breeze kept
everyone happy and comfortable. The official
part of the day began when the participants
congregated at the registration station in the
beautiful city of Westlake Village. The Costco
parking lot at Lindero Canyon Boulevard and
Thousand Oaks Boulevard was quite a sight
as the Porsches filled the section of the lot
adjacent to the main entrance. It was early, and
we were the only ones present, so it looked as
if a Porsche convention was underway.
We began our travels by heading east on
Agoura Road into the town by the same name.
Inside Chuck Beck’s Motorsports
We proceeded to Paramount Ranch where
numerous movies and TV series were filmed,
including M.A.S.H. and Dr. Quinn, Medicine
Woman. We connected with Mulholland
Highway and continued through the back
roads of Calabasas, Woodland Hills, Topanga
and Malibu. About 90 minutes after we started,
18 APRIL 2006 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION
we turned right onto Pacific Coast Highway.
The phalanx of Porsches headed north on PCH
to the Cross Creek shopping area of Malibu to
visit a specialty store showcasing restored and
kit 356 models. The store has a new owner,
and he introduced himself to many of our
members. The small interior compelled most
of our members to explore the other shops
in the area, and many took advantage to
patronize the boutiques. We were surprised
that parking was relatively easy since this
location is known for its jammed parking lots,
especially on weekends.
About an hour passed, and the group
resumed its driving north on PCH for just
a few miles until it reached the luncheon
destination, Paradise Cove Café. This location
is one of those places that sits right on the
beach in a most perfect setting, a scene well
known to those fans of James Gardner (The
Rockford Files) who watched him on TV as a
detective living in house trailer overlooking
the ocean. (I always wondered what auto body
shop was engaged by the producers of that
show; there was a wreck involving Rockford’s
Firebird in every episode!) It was a beautiful
setting again, as our Porsches basked in the
parking lot, gleaming in the sparkling sun.
In the background, the blue Pacific and the
cloudless sky formed the ideal backdrop for
this fantastic adventure.
The Café was ready for us. However, it
was a little disappointing when we were not
seated together. We were placed at available
tables throughout the restaurant, and many
of us took positions at the outdoor patio.
Nonetheless, a lot of camaraderie was still
present and enjoyed. By two o’clock, most of
our members departed the Café and headed
home. The end of another special day with our
club members and fun-filled automobiles was
at hand.

Porsche 917 Engines Become Lifesavers
Stolen engine auction helps prevent breast cancer
Words By Dave Arnold
Photos By Pelican Parts
Vasek Polak emigrated to the U.S. from the
Czechoslovakia in 1948 with $350 in his pocket
and a soul filled with self-belief. He died in 1997,
a wealthy man and deeply loved by the racing
community. Two years later, Polak1s collection
of race cars was sold, including some amazing
engines – several New Old Stock Porsche 917
engines in displacements from 4.9 to 5.4 liters,
a rare 907/771 hillclimb engine, a 908 engine,
four BMW GTP turbo engines, and a rare,
prototype 911 motor.
On the night of Sept. 24-25, 2000, those
engines, now belonging to the Vasek and
Anna Maria Polak Foundation and Charitable
Trust, were stolen from a secret warehouse,
and vanished into thin air. Word of the milliondollar theft was kept from the media, and
doled out only on a need-to-know basis…
Many years passed, until somebody posted
an item on the PelicanParts.com bulletin
board (a large Porsche enthusiast site) trying
to sell some Porsche 917 engines. Wayne
Dempsey, CEO and Owner of Pelican Parts, is
also the webmaster. He tracked the address
through the Internet to see who that person
was, and contacted authorities who were able
to recover the engines - in perfect condition.
On March 25, 2006, the engines were
auctioned for more than $1 million. But
Engines on display next to a 917 replica
more important than the trade of old metal
for new dollars: The engines will be allowed
to once again shriek to the skies as Ferry
Porsche intended, and the price paid for
them by a European collector/vintage racer,
will allow the Polak Foundation to purchase
two new mammography units for Torrance
Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles. Already
in place at Torrance Memorial are the Vasek
Polak Imaging Pavillion and the Vasek Polak
Research Program.

415-horsepower 2007 997 GT3
Debuts at Geneva Motor Show
Words and Photos by Porsche Cars North America
Porsche’s new 2007 911 GT3 made its public
debut at the Geneva Motor Show on February
28, 2006. The latest race-bred 911 sports coupe
features a 415-horsepower naturally aspirated
engine with an 8,400 rpm redline, an active
suspension setup tuned for the track, and a
mechanical limited-slip differential.
The 415-horsepower, 3.6-liter flat-Six
engine produces a specific output of 115.3
horsepower-per-liter, among the highest of
any naturally aspirated production car. The
Boxer engine’s power peak is reached at 7,600
26 JUNE 2006 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION
rpm, on the way to an 8,400 rpm redline -- 200
rpm beyond the previous GT3 model.
The combination of a more powerful,
higher-revving engine and shortened gear
ratios produces impressive acceleration
figures, allowing the 2007 911 GT3 to reach
60 mph from a standstill in 4.1 seconds (0-100
km/h, 4.3 sec.), and 100 mph (160 km/h) from
a standing start in 8.7 seconds. The top testtrack speed of the new 911 GT3 is 193 mph
(310 km/h).
The 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 will be available
in North America beginning in August 2006.
U.S. pricing for the new model is $106,000.
