Q: Have you thought at all about what it is going to be like walking out
of that tunnel one last time on Senior Day?
A: I have been thinking about that since I first stepped onto that field
earlier this year. I don’t know what type of emotions are going to
happen in the moment. But it is probably going to be a real elevating
moment for me to step onto that field one last time in front of all
the fans.
Q: Does the feeling change any with it being against Louisville for the

A: That would make it even better if we were able to get a win on Senior

THE GOLDA WAY

F
ind a way.
That was the mentality Kentucky
women’s golf head coach Golda Johansson
Borst wanted to instill into her team before the
season after coming oh-so-close to making the
NCAA Championships last season. After a schoolrecord five straight NCAA regional appearances,
Borst wants to get over the hump and make the
national finals as a team for the first time since
1992.
Find a way has never had more meaning after a
difficult fall that’s been plagued by injuries and
riddled with some of the toughest tournaments in
the country.
UK barely missed qualifying for the NCAA
Championships last season after one of the best
final rounds of the year at the 2015 South Bend
Regional. The Wildcats placed seventh in the region
(the top six teams qualify for the NCAA
Championships), the best finish under Borst, and
sent then-freshman Isabelle Johansson to the NCAA
Championships as an individual, the first time a
Kentucky individual qualified for the finals since
Heather Kraus in 1998.
Despite those accomplishments, Borst
described the 2014-15 season as inconsistent and
raised expectations for the program. Borst brought
back a versatile roster with experienced seniors
Cylia Damerau and Sarah Harris, key additions like
Nebraska transfer Jordan Chael, and young, talentfilled players like Grace Rose and Johansson, who
led the Wildcats in scoring average in the fall and
represent the future of the program.
The fall hasn’t gone according to plan because
of several key injuries and inconsistencies. Throw in
tournaments that featured some of the nation’s top
talent and it’s made for a tough early season.
Nevertheless, Borst wants her team to find a way.
The Wildcats still can during the important spring
season and showed signs of finding their way at the
conclusion of their last tournament.
On the last day of the fall season, the Wildcats
ISABELLE JOHAN SSO N
got momentum back on their side. With Rose’s
career-best 5-under-par 67 and 54-hole score of
222 — the top 54-hole score for any member of the
team this season — Kentucky shot its best 18-hole
team score of the 2015-16 year and gave the
Wildcats something to build on in the offseason.
In order to reach the NCAA Championships in the
spring, rounds like that will have to be replicated
and the team will have to get back to the roots of
their game of playing aggressively with fire and
determination and without fear. But, with time this
winter to practice, to heal from injuries and to regain
composure, the opportunity is still there in the
spring to continue the program’s regional success
and break through into the NCAA Championships.
They can still find a way.
It starts with a matchup vs. Louisville on Jan. 31,
followed by a trip to the Darius Rucker
Intercollegiate. The LSU Tiger Golf Classic will take
place March 4-6. From there, Kentucky will finish
out the regular season at the Bryan National
Collegiate, where the Wildcats had two individuals
finish in the top 15, three in the top 50 and finished
sixth as a team.

meet the head coach
Following KentucKy’s upset oF south carolina last season — the biggest Fourthquarter comebacK in uK history — coach marK stoops excited the big blue nation
by proclaiming, “we’re just getting started!”
given the improvement evident on the field and
the recruiting trail during his first two years on the
job and the blue-collar work ethic he displays daily,
stoops has a strong chance of fulfilling that vow.
on the field, the wildcats improved from two wins
in his first season to five victories last season — not
the end result stoops seeks, of course, but undeniable progress nonetheless.
stoops’ three recruiting classes have ranked
higher in the rivals.com rankings than any previous
classes in the history of the recruiting evaluator.
with the reinvention of commonwealth stadium
and construction of a new football training complex
on the underway, stoops is continuing the enthusiasm and momentum he’s inspired since being
introduced as uK’s head coach in december 2012.
now, stoops turns his attention to his third season at Kentucky, where he will work to continue the
turnaround of wildcat on-field fortunes. part of the
acclaimed stoops coaching family, he has a history
of dramatic improvements during his time as defensive coordinator at Florida state and arizona.
stoops was defensive coordinator at Fsu from
2010-12, inheriting a unit ranked 108th in the ncaa
in total defense and turning it into one of the
nation’s best. in the 2012 season, the seminoles
were second in the nation in total defense, allowing
254.1 yards per game, and sixth nationally in scoring defense at 14.7 points per game. playing well
against the run and the pass, Fsu was third in the
country in rushing defense and led the nation in
pass defense. Fsu led the acc in seven defensive
categories. stoops also coached the defensive
backs under head coach jimbo Fisher.
eight seminoles on defense earned 2012 all-acc
honors, including four first-team selections, highlighted by one of the nation’s top defensive end
duos in bjoern werner and cornellius carradine,
who combined for 24 sacks and 31 tackles for loss.
werner was a finalist for the 2012 bronko nagurski
award as the national defensive player of the year
and was among the national leaders in sacks with
13. stoops also coached cornerback ronald darby
to acc defensive rookie of the year.
the seminoles’ prowess was a continuation of
the 2011 season, when stoops’ defenders led the
nation in fewest yards allowed per carry (2.3),
ranked fourth in the nation in total defense (275
yards per game), second in rushing defense (82.7
ypg), fourth in scoring defense (15.1 points per
game), and eighth in tackles for loss (8.6 per game)
and quarterback sacks (3.1 per game). Fsu led the
acc in eight defensive categories.
stoops overhauled the Florida state defense in
2010, his first season as defensive coordinator. the
seminoles gave up 19.6 points per game, third-best
in the acc and 20th nationally. Fsu ranked 42nd
nationally in total defense that season; in contrast,
BACK

the team was 108th nationally in total defense and
94th in scoring defense in 2009, the year before
Stoops’ arrival. FSU improved its overall defense by
more than 80 yards per game, primarily by limiting
opponents to 75 fewer rushing yards per game. The
Seminoles ranked third in the nation in quarterback
sacks and were 21st in tackles for loss. In the secondary, Stoops coached Xavier Rhodes to ACC
Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and National
Defensive Freshman of the Year accolades.
During Stoops’ three seasons, FSU went 10-4,
9-4 and 12-2, including wins over South Carolina in
the 2010 Chick-fil-A Bowl, Notre Dame in the 2011
Champs Sports Bowl and Northern Illinois in the
2013 Orange Bowl.
Stoops was defensive coordinator and DBs coach
at Arizona from 2004-09, working for his brother,
Mike, who was head coach of the Wildcats. During
Mark’s time there, Arizona’s records improved
steadily, going 3-8, 3-8, 6-6, 5-7, 8-5 and 8-5. The
Wildcats advanced to the Las Vegas Bowl and Holiday Bowl during the last two years.
Mark and Mike are also brothers of Oklahoma
head coach Bob Stoops. Mike is currently the defensive coordinator on Bob’s staff at Oklahoma. The
eldest of the brothers, Ron Stoops Jr., is co-defen-

sive coordinator at Youngstown State.
Stoops inherited an Arizona unit that was 109th
in the nation in total defense and 107th in scoring
defense in 2003, the year before he arrived. By the
end of his term at Arizona, the Wildcats ranked in
the nation’s top 25 in total defense his final two seasons and ranked as high as 33rd in scoring defense.
Prior to Arizona, Stoops coached the defensive
backs three years at Miami (Fla.). The 2001 national
champion Hurricanes led the nation in pass efficiency defense, scoring defense and turnover margin. That team also established a school record with
27 interceptions and 45 total takeaways.
Stoops’ 2002 secondary led the nation in pass
defense and pass efficiency defense. Despite having to replace all four starters in the defensive backfield, the 2003 team led the nation in pass defense.
In his three seasons, Miami went 35-3, including the
12-0 Rose Bowl title campaign, plus appearances
in the Fiesta and Orange bowls.
Stoops was raised in Youngstown, Ohio. Like brothers Bob and Mike, Mark played in the secondary at
the University of Iowa for Hall of Fame coach Hayden
Fry. He participated in four bowl games as a player.
Stoops and his wife, Chantel, have two sons, Will
and Zack.

Marrow has a major challenge this season in developing
a very young group of tight ends. None of his tight ends
have game experience at Kentucky.
Schlarman has four returning starters — tackle Jordan
Swindle, guards Zach West and Ramsey Meyers, and
center Jon Toth. Several additional lettermen and redshirts will provide plenty of competition this season.

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY
Open up A wOrld Of prOmise
or 150 years, the university of Kentucky
has served the people of the Commonwealth and our region. Through the education we provide, the creative research we
conduct, and the care and service we render, we
are the university for Kentucky — the institution
our Commonwealth has charged with asking
and addressing the most penetrating questions
confronting our state and her people, the vexations that challenge us in education, economic
development, health care, and cultural and
societal advance.
what does that commitment mean to you?
it means that from day one on our campus you
can study with faculty who are leaders in their
fields. You can walk 10 minutes in any direction
and work with a world-class clinician, chemist, historian, poet, engineer, business specialist and others. we hold fast to our first priority — the
development of our students, the young men and
women who come here with bright, uncompromising potential and who we expect to leave here ready
to lead lives of leadership, meaning and purpose.
we have a deep sense of service, along with
an uncommon position as both the state’s flagship and land-grant institution. strong linkages
exist among graduate education, academic
research and our clinical medical enterprise.
Those partnerships have helped build a nationally
respected medical center that increasingly provides access to advanced subspecialty care for
those most in need across the state and region.
Together, our campus is at the forefront of creativity and discovery. uK is currently one of only
22 public institutions with a trifecta of federal
designations of excellence — for aging, in cancer
and with respect to translational science. we
F
have been home or educational proving ground
for nobel laureates and the national Book Award
winner; state poet laureates and winners of the
pulitzer prize. Our faculty members across disciplines are working in communities to improve
cancer-screening rates; are using the latest computational science technology to unlock the treasures of the dead sea scrolls in paris; or are
providing their skills to improve drinking water in
Central and south America.
To support our work, the university is investing
more than $1.7 billion in its academic, research,
health care, athletic and community infrastructure, the vast majority of which is the result of private fund-raising efforts, public-private
partnerships, and the support of university athletics. The physical transformation — combined
with our traditional mission of service, discovery
and teaching — has given us a sense of momentum and a renewed sense of purpose.
Our campus is the Commonwealth. Though we
are in and of lexington, we have a footprint
through our extension network in all 120 Kentucky counties. Our health care enterprise partners with 170 clinical outreach practices
reaching some 4,300 beds. The economic impact of our research exceeds $580 million, creates jobs, generates tax revenue and addresses
the seemingly intractable challenges we face.
As an institution, collectively, we represent a
powerful pairing of global reach, but enduring
commitment to one state. we have a vision to be
one of the handful of truly outstanding residential
public research campuses in the united states,
a special place that elevates a Commonwealth
and impacts a larger world beyond its borders.
we invite you to come see blue with us.

itch Barnhart, University of Kentucky
director of Athletics, is being recognized as one of the best in the nation
in his profession.
Barnhart was one of four division i Ads named
ncAA division i Athletics director of the year in June
at the annual convention of the national
Association of collegiate directors of Athletics.
Barnhart was one of four finalists for the Athletics director of the year as chosen by the SportsBusiness Journal. And, in february, Barnhart
received the sports Business Award from the Bluegrass sports commission.
it is no coincidence that Barnhart’s multiple
accolades came in the same year as the completion of his 15 by 15 by 15 Plan, an ambitious blueprint set in 2008 in which Kentucky would rank in
the nation’s top 15 athletic programs and win 15
conference or national championships by 2015. At
the same time, Barnhart set a goal of a 3.0 composite grade-point average for UK student-athletes
and an even greater commitment to community
service by Wildcat athletes and staff.
the academic goal was first achieved in the
spring semester of 2010 and has an active streak
of six consecutive 3.0 semesters, hitting a peak in
spring 2014 with a school-record 3.218 composite
GPA. community service has risen to more than
4,000 hours annually and includes outreach to the
lexington area, the state and as far away as
ethiopia. the directors’ cup objective was reached
a year early when UK ranked at a school-record no.
11 in the 2013-14 national all-sports standings.
the Wildcats followed with a no. 22 ranking in
2014-15, marking the third consecutive year that
UK landed in the top 25.
the final goal was reached in March when UK
men’s basketball claimed the southeastern conference tournament title, the 15th championship
won by Wildcat athletes since 2008.
Barnhart’s 15 by 15 by 15 Plan started by providing funds for full coaching staffs and scholarship
allotments for all 22 UK sports.

next, Barnhart constructed new facilities, including the Joe craft center; new stadiums for track and
field, softball and soccer; the UK Golf house; and

stadium recently completed major renovations and
a new football practice/office complex is underway.
A new baseball stadium and indoor tennis facility
are on the drawing board. All totaled, Barnhart has
completed or is in the process of approximately
$297 million of facility construction.
UK Athletics has remained financially self-sufficient under Barnhart’s management, operating
with a balanced budget and with the help of no
state or University funds. seeing pressing facility
needs on campus as well, Barnhart has made a
$65 million commitment for athletics to fund nearly
two-thirds of the new Academic science Building.
he also directs an annual $1.7-million contribution
to the University’s scholarship program.
Barnhart is a native of Kansas city, Kan. he
earned his bachelor’s degree from ottawa

sports administration from ohio University.
Barnhart’s family includes his wife, connie; three
children, Blaire, scott, and Kirby Willoughby; Kirby’s
husband, McKenzie, and a grandson, cooper.

HISTORY AND TRADITIONS
p a g e a N t R y O f B I g B l U e N at I O N
COLORS
the University of Kentucky adopted blue and
white as its official colors in 1892. UK students
had first decided on blue and light yellow before
the Kentucky-Centre football game Dec. 19,
1891. the yellow was soon dropped from the
combination and replaced by white.
the particular Kentucky shade of blue, close to
royal blue, was determined without ceremony.
after settling on the base colors, a student posed
the logical question, “What color blue?” letterman Richard Stoll looked down at his necktie and
raised it to the air. the vote was unanimous.
So Kentucky blue is really Stoll necktie blue.
GOAL POSTS
the Commonwealth Stadium goal posts have
been torn down twice since it opened in 1973.
they were first toppled in 1997 following Kentucky’s 40-34 overtime win over alabama. It was
UK’s first victory over the tide in 75 years. “If I
weren’t so old, I’d have torn them down myself,”
said then-UK athletics Director C.M. Newton.
It happened again in 2006 after the Wildcats’
dramatic 24-20 triumph over georgia, but that
should be the last time. Citing safety concerns,
UK has installed collapsible goal posts, which will
prevent repeats of the popular — but potentially
dangerous — celebration ritual.
CHEERLEADERS
the Kentucky cheerleading squad won an
unprecedented 20th national cheerleading
championship in 2014 at the competition sponsored by the Universal Cheerleaders association.
the cheerleaders also won the UCa national title
in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997,
1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005,
2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and have been
the runners-up on six occasions. Jomo thompson is the coach of the cheerleaders and t. lynn
Williamson is the cheerleader adviser.
GOVERNOR’S CUP
the governor’s Cup was created in 1994 as
the trophy for the winner of the Kentuckylouisville game.
Donated by Kroger at a cost of $23,000, the
governor’s Cup stands 33 inches tall and weighs
110 pounds. the trophy’s base and upright
columns are hand-milled black marble. the glass
components are composed of Optic-grade crystal. all metal parts are 23-karat, gold-plated
brass. the cup itself is solid pewter with a 23karat gold-plated finish.
the cup was designed by Kendall Costner and
sculpted by James Corcoran of Bruce fox, Inc. the
Kentucky-louisville series was renewed in 1994
with the Wildcats winning the game, 20-14.
NATIONAL
Champions
Kentucky is the 1950 national champion,
according to Jeff Sagarin, who handles
computer ratings for USA Today. In 1950, the
national champions were decided after the
regular season but before the bowl games,
preventing the No. 7-ranked Wildcats from
receiving credit for knocking off No. 1-ranked
Oklahoma, 13-7, in the Sugar Bowl.
Sagarin, who has handled computer
ratings since the 1970s, reconstructed
earlier seasons so that bowl games could be
taken into account. His analysis indicates
that UK was the Sagarin Ratings national
champion for the 1950 season.

HISTORY AND TRADITIONS
p a g e a n t r y o f B i g B l u e n at i o n
NICKNAME
the official nickname of university of Kentucky sports teams is Wildcats.
the name became synonymous with uK
shortly after a 6-2 victory over illinois on oct. 9,
1909. Commandant philip Carbusier, then head
of the military department of old State university,
told a group of students in a chapel service following the game that the Kentucky football team
had “fought like wildcats.”
the moniker “Wildcats” became increasingly
popular and the university since adopted it as its
official nickname.
THE ROADCATS
“the Kentucky roadcats rV Club” is a group
of Wildcat fans who own rVs and get together to
follow the team on road trips. the club was
established in 1999 and has had more than
100 members. the roadcats also sponsor
scholarships each year for the team’s student
managers and/or student athletic trainers. the
roadcats’ officers are ron and Donna Mcgohn
(presidents), Becky Mcgaughey (vice president),
Jane floyd (treasurer) and Kathy adams
(secretary). in addition to their support of the
football team, the roadcats also have had events
for basketball and baseball games.
CAWOOD LEDFORD
the legendary “Voice of the Wildcats” was
Cawood ledford. for 39 years, ledford called
Kentucky football and men’s basketball. His
voice alone symbolized uK athletics. ledford
called his last uK football game nov. 23, 1991,
vs. tennessee, and retired from the microphone
following the 1991-92 basketball season.
WILDCAT MASCOT
the Wildcat costumed mascot originated during the 1976-77 academic year at the university
of Kentucky. gary tanner was the first Wildcat to
dance and entertain
crowds at Commonwealth Stadium and
rupp arena.
today, the Wildcat
mascot also attends
academic functions
and serves as a
friendly ambassador for the university.
in the early 1980s, Wildcat mascot terry Barney began the tradition of doing a one-arm
pushup for each of Kentucky’s points in front of
the student section at Commonwealth Stadium
after every Wildcat score.
Scratch, another costumed mascot, was unveiled in 1996.
NAT NORTHINGTON
nat northington of louisville became the first
african-american player to sign with the university of Kentucky and a Southeastern Conference
institution. northington signed a national letterof-intent with uK in December 1965. He later
became the first african-american football player
to play in an SeC game, appearing in the uK-ole
Miss game in lexington on Sept. 30, 1967.
THE IMMORTALS
Simply known as “the immortals,” the 1898
university of Kentucky football squad remains
the only undefeated, untied and unscored upon
Wildcat club in school history. “the immortals”
outscored opponents 180-0 while posting a 7-0
record. roscoe Severs served as team captain
under coach W.r. Bass.
PAUL “BEAR” BRYANT
paul “Bear” Bryant won more games than any
other coach in uK football history. Bryant spent
eight years in lexington (1946-53) and produced
an impressive 60-23-5 record. He led the Wildcats
to four bowl games and their first SeC title in 1950.

generate excitement and enthusiasm at Wildcat
athletics events. The team has a blue squad and
a white squad, and is coached by Dawn Walters.
The team won its first national championship
at the 2005 national competition, sponsored by
the United Spirit Association. Last year, UK finished eighth nationally in the pom division and
sixth in the hip-hop division sponsored by the
Universal Dance Association.

COMPLIANCE CORNER
W h at i s at h l e t i c s c o m p l i a n c e ?
n the interest of athletics compliance, the University of Kentucky and every ncaa institution
are responsible for monitoring the activities of
the department of athletics. the ncaa rules were
developed to ensure that members of the institution’s staff, student-athletes and other individuals
or groups representing the institution’s athletics
interests comply with the ncaa rules and maintain the highest standard of ethical conduct.
I
PRINCIPLES OF INSTITUTIONAL
RESPONSIBILITY
the institution’s responsibility for the conduct
of its intercollegiate athletics program includes
responsibility for the actions of its staff members
and for the actions of any other individual or
organization engaged in activities promoting the
athletics interests of the institution.
the ncaa defines an individual as a
representative of athletics interests or a
“booster” if he or she:
• has participated in or is a member of an
agency or organization promoting UK’s
intercollegiate athletics program;
• makes or has made a donation to any of the
UK men’s or women’s athletics programs;
• is assisting or has been requested by the
UK athletics Department staff to assist in
the recruitment of prospects (which he or
she is not permitted to do);
• is assisting or has been requested to provide benefits to enrolled student-athletes or
their families (which he or she is not permitted to do);
• is the parent or legal guardian of an
enrolled student-athlete; or
• has been involved otherwise in promoting
the UK athletics program.
a person is considered a representative of
athletics interests of the University of Kentucky
just by being an alumnus, friend or fan of the
University, regardless of whether he or she has
made a financial contribution to the University
and/or the intercollegiate athletics program.
Remember, a representative of athletics interests
is responsible for making the University of
Kentucky’s compliance office aware of any
potential violations of ncaa rules he or she knows
have occurred. according to the ncaa, once an
individual has been identified as an athletics
representative, he or she retains this identity
forever, even if that person no longer contributes
to the athletics program.
PRINCIPLES OF RULES COMPLIANCE
the athletics compliance office works to
identify and reduce areas of risk within the
athletics program that could negatively impact the
University of Kentucky. if a problem arises, it is the
responsibility of the athletics compliance office to
determine how the problem occurred, how it could
have been prevented and how to reduce the
chances of it occurring in the future. the two main
functions of the athletics compliance office are to
educate and monitor. the compliance staff meets
regularly with coaches and student-athletes to
provide information and materials on the
applications of the complexities of the ncaa
bylaws and at the same time provide as much
information as possible to the University of
Kentucky community. the staff also monitors the
functions of the athletics department that are
governed by ncaa legislation.
a misconception about the role of the athletics
compliance office is that because UK has an athletics compliance office, no problems will occur.
Unfortunately, this is not the case. many people
are involved in the operation of an athletics program who make decisions daily that affect the
program positively or negatively. Just as having a
fire station does not prevent fires from occurring,
a compliance office cannot stop violations from
occurring within an athletics program. all components within an athletics program must work together and each function properly, effectively and
efficiently to insure compliance. it must be a
shared responsibility. each person interested in
UK athletics assists the athletics program by
knowing and complying with ncaa rules.
