report showed the engine company with
48 members, the hook and ladder company , 79, and Liberty hose company 41
members, a total of 168 active members, 22 of whom are in war service.
The department owns 1,850feet of 21-2

$13,445.' The board of directors, Chief
Warta , August Voldenauer, William
Rail, George Dittmann, J. J. Schmitt,
George Frevert and William Visusii,
have been diligent during the year.
An emergency kit was presented to the
boys during the year by Chief Warta.
Liberty hose company 'snew automobile
hose apparatus is being painted red and
gold. Gas lamps and electri c searchlights were installed on all apparatus,
the fire siren was connected with the
Vulcanite factory in addition to the
other three alarm stations.
Chief
Warta reported that on account of the
additional alarm equipment, the local
policy holders would be saved approximately $750 on three-year policies.
Directors Dittmann and Voldenauer
presented the engine company with
$5.00 for tbeir large percentage of
members in line at the June 14 inspection. Two members received their exemption certificates during the term,
Frederick W agner and Peter Ott, and
William Wolte r, Leon Czernobil , Frank
Steiger and Otto Syben were added to
the rolls. There were 16 alarms sounded
during the year with damages from
fires amounting to approximately $2,675;
one, the home of James Temple near
the bay, which was totally destroyed ,
amounting to $1,500, was outside of
the fire district. During the cold day s
of last March Chief Warta sounded the
fire alarm ar the school and within 50
seconds the 352 children and teachers,
were outside of the building. Martin
Kurdt, a member of the engine company, died in war service. The budget of
expenses, $1,305, was unanimously
adopted. The officers were all re-elected as follows: Chief , Joseph P. W arta;
citizen directors, August Voldenauer
and George Dittmann ; inspectors of
election, J. R. Wieser and Charles
Riehl, the former in place of Warner
Frevert.

following officers:- Captain . Frederick
J. Roeper; lieutenant , Frank L. Hirsch ;
second , lieutenant , Charles Reuther;
trustees, Albert Beyer and Charles
Froehlich; financial secretary, William
Steuwe; recording secretary, Alvin Lindeke. Chief Warta attended the meeting and an additional $500 Liberty bond

a renomination for the captaincy in that
he believed in the young fellows taking
the offices. He served two successive
terms and two previous terms.
The Liberty Loan committee with
Chairman Arnold met Tuesday evening
at the school and the figures then approximately Bhowed that the subscribed
amount to that date was $35,000 of the
quota of $56,800. It is almost assured
that the quota will be raised before the
close of the week. Miss Anna Keller,
one of the energetic workers, reported
a $5D0 bond sale at the meeting. The
committee will meet again tomorrow
evening. The publicity manager is
endeavoring to have a speaker at
both theatres Sunday evening.
In order that there will be no delay
in completing the local Liberty Loan
quota here . Cashier George Pebler and
staff will keep the bank open tomorro w,
Columbus day , for the handling of Liberty bond sales only.
A consignment of 297 tons of anthracite coal was received here in September as against 119 during the same
month last year.
