Background
UPM lead the MOOC development for
TITAS.
MOOC will be introduced to in-campus
students for blended learning.
At UPM, the initiative is known as
PutraMOOC
TITAS is a compulsory course for all
first year students of public universities
Offered as self-study in Openlearning
ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION AND

Basic idea of MOOC (Organic growth of knowledge through interaction)
DEVELOPING THE MOOC FOR
TITAS – FORMING THE TEAM
• FACULTY LEVEL
• Dean, Deputy Dean of Academic and
academics (Subject Matter Expert, SME) to
plan and prepare contents. More than one
instructors are involved to bring forward the
effort as a team. Course Coordinator assigned
• Support staffs (example: Teaching
assistant/Tutor/Postgraduate student) to help
in uploading contents periodically and
interaction with students
DEVELOPING THE MOOC FOR
TITAS – FORMING THE TEAM (2)
•
UNIVERSITY LEVEL
• Coordination – Special group for MOOC
development, chaired by Deputy Vice Chancellor of
Academic, hosted by Centre for Academic
Development, members include Dean, Deputy Dean,
Course Coordinator
• Technical/Operational
• Information and Communication Development
Centre (IDeC)
• Instructional Design/Educational Technology
experts
• Language experts
DEVELOPING THE MOOC FOR
TITAS – COURSE DESIGN (1)
•
•
•
The pedagogical design was one the biggest challenge.
The material had to be designed to align with a basic
level of undergraduate course, outcomes to achieve,
30% of content coverage and incorporating
multimedia delivery aspects.
Initial principle of an xMOOC, which is that all material
essential to the course should be located on the platform
with only extra, non-essential activity being housed on
external sites such as YouTube.
In this approach learning and teaching is centred on the
predefined material, i.e. videos and text.
DEVELOPING THE MOOC FOR
TITAS – COURSE DESIGN (2)
•
•
•
•
From an early stage the team decided that the social
community aspect should be at the centre of the course;
this is a style predominantly found at the heart of
cMOOCs (connectivist courses).
The team wish that learners would question and
challenge each others responses to questions. Therefore,
the course was designed to allow for maximum
interaction points between participants via discussion
forums, allowing for a connected network of learners to
form organically (Rhizomatic model of learning).
Correct balance of xMOOC and cMOOC pedagogy
Two main learning styles: Acquisition and Participation
DEVELOPING THE MOOC FOR
TITAS – STORY BOARD
•
•
•
The course is designed for learners coming from all
backgrounds, being the compulsory course for all public
university students
Storyboard designed having 4 levels: Contents, Activities,
Assessment, Deduction/Summary (see Storyboard)
It was used as a basis for each week to keep a level of
consistency for the developers and participants and to
enable them to develop expectations and established
practices as the course progressed.
DEVELOPING THE MOOC FOR
TITAS – VIDEO PRODUCTION
•
•
•
•
•
Central media production unit provided by IDeC
The team decided to stick with “talaqqi” concept, where
teaching video form a key component of the course
It was rather unclear at the beginning to what extent this
would be and how much resource (time and budget)
would be required.
The core videos are intended to introduce/summarise and
promote the course.
Recordings were conducted in studio and on-site (see
photos)
DEVELOPING THE MOOC FOR TITAS –
PUTTING MATERIALS IN PLATFORM
•
•
The team decided to package
the videos and materials in
interactive courseware format
due to several reasons: 1)
videos are not parked in
Youtube since some
universities block access, 2)
content sharing regardless of
platform
The instructors need to be
trained how to use
Openlearning to upload their
contents and deliver the course
DELIVERING THE MOOC FOR
TITAS – BLENDED LEARNING
• Lecturers use materials from MOOC TITAS
to support the teaching and learning in
classroom
• Support the implementation of Flipped
Classroom
• Support the implementation of StudentCentred Learning

WAY FORWARD FOR MOOC TITAS
•
•
DEVELOPMENT OF MOOC TITAS HAS
ENTERED A NEW PHASE
IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE IN
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES BY:
• PRODUCE VIDEOS OF TALK SHOW,
PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING TRIGGERS,
MORE ON-SITE RECORDING
• ADDING MORE EXCITING ENGAGEMENT
AND PARTICIPATION ACTIVITIES SUCH AS
VIDEO BLOGGING
• IMPROVING CURRENT MATERIALS TO
BETTER QUALITY
