As we pass into October and autumn, you may already be looking forward with expectation
to Christmas. It’s a blessed holy day, and we will celebrate it here in style, from Christmas
Eve until the 12th night of Christmas.
(There is probably a 12th man joke in there somewhere, but I’m too caught up with the
Pittsburgh Pirates right now!)

Office Hours
Monday thru Friday from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Please call for an appointment outside of those times. Fr. Evan will be in
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Tuesdays he is out in the community, and off on Friday. In case of emergency
contact the church office.
But even before that, we will gather all thru Advent in expectation of that celebration. We will host a
Xmas bazaar of assorted crafts and goodies, proceeds to support our children attending church camp in
the summer. And we will make Advent wreaths from the beautiful forest greenery that is part of this
region of God’s ‘timbered choir.’ Last year it was a special day of ‘messy church,’ and it promises to
be blessedly messy again!
And before that, we celebrate All Saints Day, when we remember all the saints who have gone before
us-and hey, all the sinners too. There is a clear overlap of the two, and Jesus Christ is drawing them all
with us into his church.
(The incense will be burned sparingly, and it is hypo-allergenic!)
And before that we will host two events, which I highly encourage you to attend:
First, the Family Harvest Dinner! The meal is being generously provided by a crew of fine ladies, and
you are invited to gather, eat, enjoy one another’s fellowship, and get to know new people as well. It
will be a beautiful and delicious way to celebrate this community’s faithfulness.
Second, the Vestry and Rector will present on our congregational finances. We will cover our missionbudget and investments, as well as demonstrate ways you can share sustainably in the stewardship of
that mission. In worship you will hear some messages from members about how that has worked for
them over the years. Something might speak to you.
(Yes, we’re talking about money, but that’s definitely not all.)
And before that, maybe even before you have received this newsletter, we’ll bless the pets, we’ll remember some dear and departed members of this community, we’ll gather young and old for new opportunities of quality christian learning.
And before that, we will have asked that Christ would send his holy archangel Michael to bless his
people with courage, perseverance, and above all, love, as we wrestle the demons and dragons that
grasp at our souls, our congregation and town.
(We aren’t a museum religion-we follow a living God!)

Tuesdays, 11am in the Parish Hall (Entryway along G St.)
A small group gathers to study the readings for the upcoming Sunday’s celebration of the Holy Eucharist. We read in a prayerful way, and listen for how God’s word might be addressing each of us.
We are considering changing to an evening time in November. Please consider joining us.
Adult Education Class for Fall

Acolyte Practice-Sunday, October 25, November 22 at 11:15 am.
Acolytes of all ages are expected for practice, learning and a smidge of fun. Each month we practice
our role in leading worship and learn something new, play a game and eat lunch.
“Safe-guarding God’s Children Training” - November 7, 9:00 am.—12:00 pm. Here at St. Andrew’s most parish volunteers are expected and in fact required by the Diocesan policy to attend this
training which will be offered at our congregation for your convenience. There is no cost. Please register with the office. Questions? Please call Fr. Evan or the office.
Vacation Bible School
It is our turn to host Vacation Bible School in the summer of 2016. We want to host a wonderful experience for everyone involved. In December you are invited to be part of our initial plans. Think Grand!
Art. Drama, Science, Hiking, Music, Cooking: all mater of ways to teach and share Gods’ love with
children and their families. We would like to include teens in the planning.
Tentative meeting November 30, at 6:00 pm with supper snacks.
Baptism and Confirmation Preparation
Please contact Fr. Evan if you desire to be baptized or think you are ready for the rite of confirmation.
Baptism marks our belonging within the body of Christ and is a lifelong walk. Confirmation is an important step in that walk. During Lent you will take part in a class about our church and the Christian
way of life. We will follow a short booklet-”A People Called Episcopalians”. This class is open to anyone. If you are preparing for Baptism and or Confirmation you will have some more study & service.

Dinner
And I see you with your toddler and your preschooler. I watch you cringe when your little girl asks an innocent
question in a voice that might not be an inside voice let alone a church whisper. I hear the exasperation in your
voice as you beg your child to just sit, to be quiet as you feel everyone's eyes on you. Not everyone is looking,
but I know it feels that way.

I know you're wondering, is this worth it? Why do I bother? I know you often leave church more exhausted than
fulfilled. But what you are doing is so important.

When you are here, the church is filled with a joyful noise. When you are here, the Body of Christ is more fully
present. When you are here, we are reminded that this worship thing we do isn't about bible study or personal,
quiet contemplation but coming together to worship as a community where all are welcome, where we share in
the Word and Sacrament together. When you are here, I have hope that these pews won't be empty in 10 years
when your kids are old enough to sit quietly and behave in worship. I know that they are learning how and why
we worship now, before it's too late. They are learning that worship is important.

I watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the baby quiet, juggling the infant car seat and the diaper bag as you
find a seat. I see you wince as your child cries. I see you anxiously pull things out of your bag of tricks to try to
quiet them.

I see them learning. In the midst of the cries, whines, and giggles, in the midst of the crinkling of pretzel bags
and the growing pile of crumbs, I see a little girl who insists on going two pews up to share peace with someone
she's never met. I hear a little boy slurping (quite loudly) every last drop of his communion wine out of the cup,
determined not to miss a drop of Jesus. I watch a child excitedly color a cross and point to the one in the front of
the sanctuary. I hear the echos of "Amens" just a few seconds after the rest of the community says it together. I
watch a boy just learning to read try to sound out the words in the worship book or count his way to Hymn 672.
Even on weeks when I can't see my own children learning because, well, it's one of those mornings, I can see
your children learning.
I know how hard it is to do what you're doing, but I want you to know it matters. It matters to me. It matters to
my children to not be alone in the pew. It matters to the congregation to know that families care about faith, to
see young people... and even on those weeks when you can't see the little moments, it matters to your children.
It matters that they learn that worship is what we do as a community of faith, that everyone is welcome, that
their worship matters. When we teach children that their worship matters, we teach them that they are enough
right here and right now as members of the church community. They don't need to wait until they can believe,
pray or worship a certain way to be welcome here, and I know adults who are still looking to be shown that. It
matters that children learn that they are an integral part of this church, that their prayers, their songs, and even
their badly (or perfectly-timed, depending on who you ask) cries and whines are a joyful noise because it means
they are present.
I know it's hard, but thank you for what you do when you bring your children to church. Please know that your
family -- with all of its noise, struggle, commotion, and joy -- are not simply tolerated, you are a vital part of the
community gathered in worship.

Advent Wreath Making—November 29nd
A religious craft for everyone to make and take home. We will have all sorts
of forest greenery and candles on hand for you to make an Advent Wreath.
You can use this wreath to pray all through Advent.
“Greening the Church” - December 19th, at 9:00
A tradition at St. Andrew’s well loved by past and present generations,
which we would like to teach and pass on. We gather to ‘deck the halls’—
we prepare the sanctuary for the celebration of Christmas with garlands and
window boxes of forest greenery. All ages encouraged to join in this time of
work and fellowship.
Children's Pageant—December 20th. Alice Bertram
and the children and youth of St. Andrew’s and our wider community who will present for you the story of Jesus
Christ’s birth during Sunday worship.
Christmas Eve—December 24 at 8:00 pm. This year
we will host one service on Christmas Eve. Early
enough for older adults and children, late enough for you
to get home from work, eat supper and still experience
the mystery of that most Holy Night.

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR, 11-28-15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (that’s less than 2 MONTHS away!!) at St. Andrew’s Church, in the Great and Giles Halls, using the “G” Street entrance. As you may have recently read in
the church bulletin, this is a fund raiser for sending our kids to church camp. Some folks have already started to
sew, knit, crochet, make canned goods to sell, and put together gift baskets. Back in the olden days we had
wooden trivets, hand-made toys and clocks, and other things that came out of assorted personal shops (think man
and woman caves) in the parish. Hot beverages and sweet things to eat will also be sold (donations of coffee, tea
and cider will be much appreciatedJ); limited seating will be available in the breeze-way. We also have gently
used Christmas decorations (“rummage”) and collectables, which includes an antique-ish, artificial Christmas
tree that belonged to Marigold Polson, and a keyboard that was John Macduff’s (both were members of St. Andrews during their earthly time).
We have some folks on board with the following: Bette W. is going to cover getting out our info on the Reader
Boards around town; Denise T. volunteered to do the Web and Facebook; Shawnna A. offered to inquire from
local businesses of possible donations for gift baskets; Betty P. is doing some sewing; several of us have canned
goods from our gardens and the catches from the ocean; and on the day of the Bazaar, Ed D. is going to make
Egg Nog (non-fortified, for those who wonder), Judy S. is bringing some Zucchini bread, Denise T. is bringing
Kolache, and Angela S. some little cheese cakes. Is there anything you can donate?
In addition to the above, we need folks on 11-27-15 to:
- bring down rectangle tables from upstairs by 10 a.m., if they haven’t already been brought down yet; and
- help set up (beginning at 11 a.m.), which includes brining down things from the attic and possibly assembling
last minute Gift Baskets.
On the day of the Bazaar we need volunteers to:
- oversee tables (Baked and Canned Goods, Sewing and Crafts, and Gift Baskets), which is primarily being social and helpful to our customers;
- help Angela S. in the kitchen e.g. making coffee and tea, pouring beverages (which also include cider and egg
nog), providing sweet treats, and maybe someone to do money (?);
- help Shawnna A. with the gently used Christmas items; and
- help Mary V. handle the money for purchases.
Please let me know in which area you’d like to be a part e.g. making something to be sold, volunteering, etc.
OTHER DATES:
- November 15th at 9 a.m. (between the 8:00 and 10:00 services). Let’s meet again … just to touch base, see
where we’re at, and answer questions. Unanswered questions: what shall we do with “rummage” items left
after the Bazaar? I’m thinking the unsold bazaar items could live in the Whiteside Room upstairs until their
owner picks them up.
- November 27th 11 a.m. (yes, that would be Black Friday) … we will be setting up / putting things together on
tables in the Great and Giles Halls. If you will be out of town or not available to drop off your donation/s, please
make arrangements with me to get it early. PLEASE put a price on your item/s (how much you want it sold for).
- In the meantime, please call me with ideas. J Mert, 533-4352.
