About Ettlingen
Local Culture
Ettlingen is a charming district town of about 38,000 inhabitants with a history of more than 1250 years.
Nestled in the hills of the Northern Black Forest in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. Ettlingen offers visitors
an interesting blend of a picturesque Old Town with dreamy streets and alleys and a modern industrial
estate area with many site advantages. Ettlingen is an ideal starting point to explore the Black Forest
with its endless hiking trails. Throughout the year, Ettlingen is home to various cultural events, such as
the open air theatre festival season in the summer. Also worth noting is Ettlingen’s architecture, which
include a castle from the 13th century, churches from the 12th - 15th century, and various historic buildings.
Additional Local Information
Language
While the dominant language of Germany is German, English is spoken widely, particularly in tourist
destinations. Nevertheless, knowing a bit of German before you go will help you get around more
independently. Even if you studied German, be aware that German dialects may use different words and
pronunciations than what is called High German.
Currency
The currency used in Germany is the Euro. Notes come in denominations of €100, €50, €20, €10 and €5
and the coins in use are €2, €1, € 0.50, € 0.20, € 0.10, € 0.05, € 0.02 and € 0.01.
Credit Cards and Traveller’s Checks
Credit cards are accepted in approximately 60 per cent of all shops, petrol stations, restaurants and
hotels in Germany. Most Germans still settle in cash or rely on debit cards called "EC" or "Eurocheque"
cards which are not logo-bearing and do not work like credit cards. While some hotels, restaurants and
other venues will take credit cards, by far the majority does not. When shopping or consuming anything,
it's always wise to ask in advance, otherwise you'll be expected to pay in cash. Personal checks are
unknown in Germany. Traveller’s Checks generally provide the best rate of exchange. To avoid
additional exchange rate charges, travelers are advised to take traveller's checks in Euros, Pounds
Sterling or US Dollars. Visitors are advised to have their traveller's checks exchanged at “bureaux de
change” as banks often refuse to change them and they are not accepted as payment in general stores.
Taxes
The value added tax in Germany is 19%, but non EU residents can get this money back on purchases
greater than € 30 if the merchandise is exported within three months of purchase. Look for shops that
offer VAT Reclaim assistance - these shops will generally have a placard or window sticker along with all
the stickers that say what types of credit cards they accept. When you make your purchase, ask for the
VAT Reclaim Form (this is very important). Some shops will fill this out for you or even give you your
refund or a discount on the spot. Otherwise, to collect the refund, you must present the form you received
from the shop to a customs official at the airport.
Tipping
A service charge of 15% is included in the menu price in restaurants, bars, etc. all over Germany. Still, it
is typical to "round up" the amount to some more-or-less round figure. However, if you are paying for
more than one person, you might go even higher. A rule of thumb is to add 3-5%, generally ending with a
full Euro amount. Typically, the waiter/waitress always comes to you and tells you your total. You then tell
him/her how much you will pay, including any tips or “rounding up”. It is not typical to be given a check,
then leave your money on the table. Taxi drivers expect a small tip of around 10%.

Phones
The mobile phone network in Germany is GSM 900/1800/3G, so you may be able to use your phone if
you have compatible GSM phone. Most public pay phones no longer accept coins but only Deutsche
Telecom (DT) phonecards, which are available in denominations of € 5, € 10, and € 15 from post offices,
newsagents, some tourist offices and public transport offices. You can also buy prepaid cards from other
providers which can save money and are used by dialing a PIN. Credit cards can only be used from a
small number of public phones.
Shops and Banking Hours
Most shops are open Mon-Fri 0900-1830, and 0900-1400 on Saturday. All shops, except a few bakeries,
are closed on Sunday. New laws mean shops can now open until 2000 during the week and until 1600 on
Saturday. Smaller shops may close 1300-1500 for lunch. Banks are usually open from 9.30 am to 4 pm
with a lunch break between 1 and 2 pm.
Time Difference
Ettlingen is located in the Central European Time (CET) time zone, GMT +1 hours.
Climate
The weather in Germany tends to be most stable in summer and is rarely hot (usually about 25°C/77F).
Humidity levels are usually quite high. Spring is a beautiful season but it can be slow to arrive, even if
jackets are sometimes stripped off as early as April. An Indian summer might keep beer gardens open
through October. In a harsh winter, temperatures can drop well below freezing point and remain there for
several weeks. At the higher elevations snowfall is possible starting in November.
Electricity
Electricity is supplied throughout Germany at 230 Volts, at 50 Hz. European-style round two-pin plugs
are used.
