Welcome to the 59th annual Room to Bloom Celebration! This
year, the Auxiliary continues the tradition of Room to Bloom with
the spirit of Palm Beach. The festivities begin on Wednesday,
April 25 and continue through Friday, May 18. Please join us in
support of The Mint Museum.
All parties and events are by paid reservation, and filled on a first-come,
first-serve basis. We encourage you to respond promptly, as several of the events
have limited capacity.
We would especially like to thank all of our patrons, party hosts, committee
members and Auxiliary volunteers for this year’s event. Please know that your

Celerie Kemble
Celerie Kemble’s childhood was in many ways a design tutorial spent
around construction sites, antique stores, and in the unique homes
designed by her mother and founder of Kemble Interiors Mimi McMakin.
A graduate of Harvard, Celerie worked briefly in film production before
quickly succumbing to what she calls a compulsion for design and the
creation of thoughtful interiors that “put the person in the place.”

Surrealism & Beyond: 3 Shows. 4 Artists. 1 Journey.

The term “surreal” has become a common part of our everyday vocabulary,
used to describe something surprising or out of the ordinary. It refers to
an artistic movement, Surrealism, that emerged in Paris in the 1920s.
The Surrealists were rebels, searching for new
forms of artistic expression. They celebrated
chance, spontaneity, and the uncanny as
they explored the worlds of dreams and the
subconscious. On February 11, 2012 the Mint
Museum Uptown opened Surrealism and
Beyond, a suite of three fascinating exhibitions
that explore Surrealism and its legacy. Not only
is it the first time that the Mint has presented
an exhibition on this topic, but it also marks the
first time that a project of this scope has ever
occurred in this entire region of the country.
All three exhibitions have been organized by
The Mint Museum and two are accompanied
by beautiful illustrated catalogues. Such an
ambitious undertaking would not have been
possible without the generous support of the
Mint Museum Auxiliary.
The first exhibition, Double Solitaire: The
Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy
brings together the haunting dream landscapes
of Tanguy, one of the original members of the
Surrealists, and his American wife Sage, to
explore the influence that each had upon the
other’s art. It is the first show ever to do so, and
it has already received positive reviews in the
New York Times and the Boston Globe while on
view at its previous two venues.
Seeing the World Within: Charles Seliger in the
1940s gathers together approximately three
dozen remarkable paintings created by the
American artist Charles Seliger during the first
decade of his career. Seliger burst onto the New
York art scene as a teenager, exhibiting alongside older colleagues such as Jackson Pollock
and Mark Rothko and earning his first solo
show at Peggy Guggenheim’s prestigious “Art of
the Century” gallery when he was just nineteen.
This is the first show to focus on the powerful
biomorphic abstractions from this period of his
career. After debuting in Charlotte it will travel
to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.
The final exhibition in the suite, Gordon Onslow
Ford: Visionary and Voyager, is an intimate
retrospective of the cosmic abstractions of
Gordon Onslow Ford, a British-American artist
who joined the Surrealists in Paris in the late
1930s. He later moved to this country, settling
in the 1950s in California, where the landscape,
light, and his experiences with Eastern art and
philosophy inspired a new direction in his work.
The show is drawn entirely from the collection
of his late sister Elisabeth, and her son Max,
who lives in Asheville, and is a testament to
their close family relationship.

Hard Truths: The Art of Thornton Dial

Thorton Dial is a keen observer of the human spectacle and its
narratives of corruption and moral strength, folly and triumph. As
an artist, he has spent the last two decades exploring the truth of
American history and culture in all its complexities and contradictions.
This exhibition presents a major survey of Dial’s work—an epic
gathering of over fifty large-scale paintings, sculptures, and wall
assemblages that address the most compelling issues of our time.
Hard Truths: The Art of Thornton Dial has been made possible with generous support from
Wells Fargo Private Bank. Exhibition organized by the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
A fully-illustrated scholarly catalogue will accompany the exhibition.

Auxiliary History

In 1936, the Mint Museum of Art opened as North Carolina’s first art
museum although it had no collection. A year later, four paintings
comprised its art holdings.
Over the next two decades, the collection
grew slowly and was dependent entirely upon
local donations. Then, in the mid 1950’s, the
Museum was to benefit from the efforts of a
dedicated group of community volunteers.
With the founding of the Women’s Auxiliary,
as it was known then, a long roster of
members have since contributed thousands
of volunteer hours to generate funds to
support the museum and its collection. The
Auxiliary has a long and celebrated history
with The Mint Museum.
Today, the collection at the Mint Museum
numbers over 31,000 items. The Mint
Museum Auxiliary has been a major
purchasing power behind the collection. The
Auxiliary has acquired thousands of artwork
for the Museum that includes paintings,
ceramics, costumes, sculptures, crafts, and
works on paper. It has been a rich journey
that began in 1960 with the Auxiliary’s
first art acquisition, Portrait of Sir Andrew
Cherry, by the English painter Frederick
Richard Lee.
The most important purchase of 1960 was

Farge. In the 1970’s, the Auxiliary purchased
112 items including Storage Jar. This piece
dates to 2200 BC and represents the oldest
Chinese piece in the collection. Also in this
decade, members of the Auxiliary founded
The Mint Museum’s costume collection
which now numbers over 10,000 items.
In the 1980’s, the Auxiliary purchased a
variety of artwork including works from
some of North Carolina’s most important
potters, and a work by Harvey Littleton,
known as the Father of North Carolina Glass.
Also in 1985 the Auxiliary created an
acquisitions endowment, nicknamed
EMMA, the Endowment for Mint
Museum Acquisitions. The purpose of this
endowment is to acquire works of art
consistent with the curatorial goals of the
Mint Museum in accordance with the
Auxiliary’s procedures. The funds are
raised through the Auxiliary’s annual Fall
Fundraiser and the Room To Bloom spring
celebration. The funds are currently
managed by the Foundation for the Carolinas.
In the 1990’s, the Auxiliary purchased over
$200,000 worth of Spanish Colonial Art and
acquired Nature’s Rushing Force which was
painted in 1868 and depicts the North
Carolina wilderness.
Over the years, the Auxiliary has contributed
greatly to the wealth of the museum’s
permanent collection. The funds generated
by the Auxiliary members have touched
nearly every area within the Museum’s
collection. The partnership between the Mint
Museum and The Mint Museum Auxiliary
has been rich, strong, and beneficial to both
the Museum and the city of Charlotte.
