Message From the Manager–
Message From the BoardRon Botello, Board Chairman
Many of us on the board are still being asked, “is the
new lounge open?” The answer is YES and it’s
called, “The Tavern on the Green.” Please stop by
and see the new furnishings and enjoy the new surroundings; I think you’ll be impressed. There are a
multitude of events being offered this month. I truly
believe you will find something for every member of your family. Some
of the events are Breakfast with Santa, Scavenger Hunt, New Years Eve
Party, dance sponsored by the Dance Club, and a Vintners Club celebration. From Santa to Wine, what more can you ask? See the newsletter
below for details. We honored our veterans last month and in following
that tradition please remember those brave men and women who were
stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. We had a few rather
cold days in November, but both of our courses are in good shape for
you and your out of town guests to enjoy. The entire board wants to
wish every member and your families a joyous and safe holiday season as
we end another successful year at The Club at Sonterra. There have
been many changes this past year as we continue to work on making our
Club the best in San Antonio. One thing I know for sure, we have the
best members in the city and the entire board was to “Thank You For
Being a Member!”
We are excited to announce that our very own Golf Course
Superintendent, Donny Latham, has been voted Golf Course
Superintendent of the YEAR by his peers! We are very lucky to
have such a talented member of our team! Check out the before
and after pictures of your driving range!
Sergio Salazar, General Manager
As most of you have heard The Club At Sonterra was part of a 22 Club sale last month.
Walton Street properties, majority owners of
Sonterra for nine years, has sold its ownership
interest to CBIGG (C-Bons International Golf
Group). CBIGG has retained Century Golf/
Arnold Palmer Golf Management to manage
the 22 clubs that they acquired.
Currently, CBIGG owns 4 clubs in the U.S. (Moon Valley, Tres
Rios and Western Skies all located in or near Phoenix and Stallion
Mountain in Las Vegas) and has plans to acquire more in the future.
CBIGG plans to use the next several weeks to do a thorough assessment of its acquired properties and to develop a plan and vision
for each club after these assessments are complete.
Obviously, we would love to be able to give you more concrete
information but after making such a large purchase I hope you understand that it is imperative that our new owners makes decisions
and provide a direction for the best long term success of our Club. I
have met the new owners on three occasions and I am confident
that this change will only improve the future for The Club At Sonterra.
Please feel free to email or call with any questions. I will email or
write as more information becomes available.
Christmas Fund
Every year, Sonterra asks its Members to donate $25 for the Employee Christmas Fund. Some members choose to donate more. All
money raised is split among all club employees (excluding myself)
based on tenure and hours worked for the year. Regardless of
whether they mow greens in the morning or wash dishes at night,
all employees participate in the disbursement. The average employee receives $280 and several of our longer tenured employees
reach the maximum payout of $1,000. Every year, they look forward and appreciate their check because they realize that it is a
privilege to receive this bonus from the members that they serve.
On behalf of all who work here, thank you very much for your generosity and thank you for being a Member. Happy Holidays to all.
Sergio Salazar
The Dance Club has had another successful year! Our dance instructor,
Russell Hicks, and I want to thank all who supported the Dance Club
this past year. New Classes will start Wednesday, January 14th, 2015.
We welcome any suggestions from members on dances they
would like for Mr. Hicks to teach.

Message From the CouncilStan & Karla Hester, Ambassadors
We hope that this message finds all in good
health and ready for the Holidays as we head
into the month of December. This is an
exciting time of the years as there are so
many things taking place at the club. The
new bar has open and has quickly become a
destination for so many of the members and
their guests. The New Year’s Eve party is
filling up quickly so please remember to
make your reservations and plan to attend, this is always a great
event and a good place to meet other members. Please remember
if you see someone that you may not have met, take the time to
introduce yourself and keep The Club at Sonterra the best Social

On the Greens– Donny
Latham, Golf Course Superintendent
The Range is open. I really hope you all enjoy
the green grass out on the range. The rye grass
is growing well and will continue to mature as
the season goes on. In early Summer of 2015
we will mow down to fairway height and interseed Bermuda grass into the thick rye grass
canopy which will provide a great seed bed. Once the Bermuda
grass grows in, we will have a green range all year long.
I would like to introduce Ric Burlingame.
Ric joined our team back in April and has
done a great job with the South Course.
He has a true passion for providing you as
members the best playing conditions possible. Ric has many years of experience in
both Golf Course Maintenance as well as
construction. Next time you see Ric on the
South Course, please thank him for all his
hard work.
Some projects we will start working on this
winter are as follows.
We will start cleaning all the underbrush off of 6North. The teeing
area is in need of a facelift. We will bring in new rocks and mulch
to dress that entire area up. I think it’s an amazing golf hole that
needs a facelift.
We are going to bring in new mulch beds on the South Course. We
have some beautiful Oak Trees that are so big, it is tough to grow
any real good turf under their canopy. I feel that if your ball comes
to rest under a mature tree, you should have a surface to hit from.
A well packed mulch bed actually plays easier than hard pan or dirt.
More projects are to come in next newsletter. I hope everyone enjoys their Holiday Season.
Thank You All for Being a Member!

As you read this newsletter, Thanksgiving will have passed and we are all looking forward to the Christmas Holidays. Along

Spin the wheel and add on to that T*BAM percentage. Our wheel will give you an additional 5 to 20 percent off or even FREE!
I just returned from Florida for the Partner's Championship golf trip. I was joined by Jerry Edler, Joe LaPorte, Jason Lagrega,
Zack Winkler, Scott Hill, Ron Graham, Ryan Luikens, Andrew Burt, Tony Reyes, Eric Martinez and Segio Salazar. We had an
amazing time, the hospitality was first class, and everyone had a great time. All these men earned the trip by sponsoring new
members to Sonterra, and all of them will tell you it is a first class event. Thank you guys for a great time.
The season is winding down for the SWGA and the MGA. It has been a really good year with both groups enjoying great
attendance in all events and closely contested events. Thank you to Presidents Rachel Wadsworth and John Dillree for your hard work and dedication not only to your Associations, but to Sonterra. Along with both committees, you make our job both easier and more enjoyable. We look
forward to a great 2015 and would hope any members interested in joining either association will reach out to us and get involved.
We have many other groups of members that play together on a weekly basis and are also very helpful in initiating new members to the club.
From small one tee time groups to our very active couples group on Sunday, THANK YOU!

Tennis Corner
Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
What an exciting and epic last two months of the year.
Sonterra has definitely placed a stamp on Texas Tennis
and we did it with our members. We had four teams
going to Nationals, other Sonterra teams winning
Combo and Tri Level tournaments and many members
going to the end of the year Master’s tournament in
Austin for the top players. As I mentioned, we did it
with our members. Most teams recruit from various
locales to create a dream team—we draw from our
membership and have our own dream team. Hats off to
all for a great season—rest, enjoy the holidays and refuel for another run for the gold.
December is a fun month with many holiday parties,
kids out of school, no organized leagues and DEADLINES and DECISIONS—ugh! Sorry didn’t mean to
put a damper on all the fun, but the time is here. The
end of year ratings are out first week of December. It’s time to put teams together or find a new team if your rating has changed. It’s time for new team uniforms, ball machine practice, and fitting in lessons and practices between parties. I
could go on but that would take the fun out of December. We will be sending out
emails to keep you informed on USTA/ SAPTA matters —please let us know if
you need help finding a team.
Did You Know?!
Complimentary Tennis LessonsDid you know that we offer a 30 minute complimentary
lesson to all new members or any member new to the
game? This will give you an opportunity to see how much
fun you are missing and the staff an opportunity to see
what level you are so we can maneuver you in the right
direction. Contact the tennis shop for your appointment.
Club League Registration Begins January 5th
This is a date you don’t want to forget. We only have 52
spots open per league and they fill up very fast. Tie a string
around your finger-or put a reminder alert on your smart
phone. Last season the men’s league (104) was filled in less
than two hours.
USTA/SAPTA Captains-
January is jammed packed with activities and registration for spring leagues—
please read those emails and check the bulletin board for upcoming events.
Please email us your name so we can direct members that
are looking for a team in your direction. This will also help
the tennis shop when we need to get information out to the
teams. As you can see December is going to be busy with
filling in your rosters and match play begins early January
for some. Help us help you by sending us your contact information.
Results of the Club Adult and Junior Singles Championship will be in January’s
newsletter.

has promoted for that age group. There will be tournaments for the 10 and under along with interclub match play.
The older juniors will also have designated match play along
with tournament play for their ability level. Brochures are

12 Most Creative Excuses For Not Exercising
As the Fitness Director for the past 25 years, I’ve heard ‘em all. I am not without sympathy, some are truly justified. However, others, well, are just excuses. A survey published in the October 2010 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine concluded
that most people don’t exercise daily. A 5 year study concluded, “Only about 5% of respondents reported vigorous physical activities, including using cardiovascular exercise equipment (2.2%) and running (1.1%).”
I know it’s not easy to fit exercise into a hectic schedule and there are other ways to incorporate exercise into your life, like playing
sports, dancing and working outdoors. As long as you’re moving, it all counts. Research from the National Health Research Institute surveyed the physical activity of more than 416,000 adults for eight years and concluded that even, “15 minutes of exercise a
day, or about 90 minutes a week, can add years to your life.”
Here are the excuses I’ve heard, in no particular order of creativity, along with solutions. The excuses have been disguised in order
to protect the innocent:
1. It’s raining in Washington, heat wave in Texas, blizzard in New York, I’m sleeping in.
I don’t blame you. It takes a lot of discipline to venture out in horrid weather conditions.
Solution: If you must exercise outdoors, invest in foul weather gear if it’s cold. Exercise early or late if it’s hot. Or … exercise indoors at Sonterra’s Fitness Center!
2. I’ve eaten Kung Pao and I’m bloated; an entire box of Sara Lee frozen chocolate cake, all my kids’ leftover pizza, and I
will not look fashionably svelte at the gym.
Solution: If you are self conscious, exercise at home; however the Sonterra Fitness Center is just one of those places where all body
types are welcome and no judgments are made.
3. I work 12 hour days and only get 3 hours to sleep.
Solution: If you drive to work, park far from your office and walk. If you have stairs in your home, go up and down them a few
times. That’s called functional training!
4. I am uncoordinated; I tried a Zumba class once, and fell as I tried to shimmy my hips while spinning around. I won’t
go back.
Solution: Don’t do Zumba. Try other types of exercising.
5. I used a personal trainer once who worked me so hard I couldn’t get out of bed.
Solution: Get a less aggressive trainer and interview before you sign on. Or ask for a free trail session or group training.
6. I once developed an embarrassing rash after using the equipment in the weight room.
Solution: Carry a towel and an anti-bacterial hand spray or gel…and wipe and spray! Sonterra provides the towels and the spray!
7. I was laughed off the track once because small children and turtles were passing me by as I ran.
Solution: Use the treadmills, elliptical, or bikes at the club. Bring a set of headphones, put on your favorite channel, and exercise at
your own pace.
8. I only do exercise w/friends and I have none.
Solution: The Fitness Center at Sonterra prides itself on being the “Cheers” gym. We strive to learn everyone’s names. I guarantee
you’ll make friends here with minimal effort.
9. I love to bike, but my bike has training wheels/it’s the same bike I had 30 years ago, and is missing a pedal and brake.
I fell off a bike once, bloodied my knees and cried like a baby.
Solution: Try our recumbent and upright stationary bikes…no investment in equipment, and no bleeding.
10. I have previous injuries….bad knees, bad shoulders, bad back...bad karma...I feel most comfortable sitting on the
couch eating Cheetos.
Solution: If you have bad knees and can’t do high impact exercise, walk, or do upper body work-outs. If your upper body is impaired, concentrate on lower body workouts, leg extensions, squats, or walking on a treadmill or an elliptical machine. We can help
you get started on a complimentary basic conditioning program and modify it for different needs.
11. I hate to sweat
Solution: Practice Yoga, Pilates, or do gentle stretching exercises. You may break a small sweat... but we provide small terry cloth
towels for dabbing. And Country Club members don’t sweat, we glisten!
12 – Too many medical conditions to name; my doctor says I need to take it easy; my exercise consists of munching on
Oreos while watching The Biggest Loser.
Solution: Get another doctor! Find one who will give you medical clearance to do something. Then, call us for an appointment at
210-496-9346 to get started on a basic complimentary fitness conditioning program.
