BUSINESS ADVOCACY
The Fairfax Chamber is THE VOICE OF BUSINESS IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA™ before
state, local and federal government.
BUSINESS ADVOCACY
The Fairfax Chamber’s robust legislative program advances pro-business policies in critical areas like
transportation, technology, health care, government contracting, hospitality, taxation and more.
GENERAL ASSEMBLY SESSION
During the 2013 and 2014 General Assembly Session, the Fairfax Chamber achieved a number of legislative
victories, including:
• Successful passage of a major transportation reform and funding plan.
• Securing a study of the costs, feasibility, and transportation impacts associated with a new Potomac
River crossing.
• Defeating legislation to alter the Public-Private Transportation Act that would have discouraged private
companies from investing in Virginia infrastructure projects.
• Successful passage of legislation that would ensure developers in Fairfax County can anticipate a similar
land use process and procedures akin to the rest of the Commonwealth.
• Expansion of the Commonwealth’s research and development tax credit.
• Successful opposition to a countywide meals tax proposal that would have adversely affected Fairfax
County restaurants, caterers, hotels and residents.
ACCESS TO DECISION-MAKERS
Providing members with access to elected officials at all levels of government is paramount to the
Chamber’s advocacy program. In 2013, the Chamber hosted its Annual Political Debate which included
candidates for Virginia Governor, Republican candidate Ken Cuccinelli and Democratic candidate Terry
McAuliffe and aired live in prime time on NBC4 and NBC affiliates across the Commonwealth as well as on
C-SPAN. In addition, Chamber members were invited to participate in the Fairfax Chamber’s annual Viva
Virginia event in Richmond with policymakers, including the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of
the House of Delegates. The business advocacy offerings of the Chamber also include opportunities to
participate in events such as bipartisan congressional roundtables and meetings with elected officials,
cabinet members, and other policymakers across the Commonwealth.
NOVABIZPAC
Ensuring that Northern Virginia has a voice in the legislative process, the Chamber established the Northern
Virginia Business Political Action Committee (NOVABizPAC) in 2002 to support Virginia legislators and
policymakers who promote a favorable business climate and a high quality of life in Virginia. In 2013,
NOVABizPAC endorsed in Statewide Races. The PAC endorsed Terry McAuliffe for Governor, Senator
Ralph Northam for Lieutenant Governor and Senator Mark Herring for Attorney General.

VALOR AWARDS
CHAR-A-OKE
The Valor Awards, now celebrating its 36th
anniversary, honor the bravery and dedication of
first responders in Fairfax County from the Police and
Fire & Rescue Departments and Office of the Sherriff.
In 2014, news anchors Leon Harris and Alison
Starling of ABC7/WJLA-TV served as masters of
ceremony for the event, held March 31 at the Hilton
McLean Tysons Corner.
Since 2011, Char-a-oke (charity karaoke) has quickly
become one of the most exciting traditions at the
Fairfax Chamber. This annual fundraiser brings
together more than 300 of the region’s most
prominent businesses, executives and elected
officials who let their hair down and belt out their
best karaoke tunes.
The Valor Awards are one of the most anticipated
events among the public safety community and turn
out more than 400 attendees to honor those who
protect Fairfax County businesses and citizens daily.
Proceeds from the Valor Awards and other
fundraising efforts benefit the Valor Scholarship
Fund, which provides educational scholarships to
the children of public safety personnel. To date,
more than $250,000 in educational scholarships
have been distributed.
Char-a-oke was created as an annual fundraiser
to support The Foundation for Fairfax County
Public Schools, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization
allied with, but independent of, the county’s public
school system. It was established in 2010 through
the visionary leadership of the Fairfax Chamber.
Business leaders anticipated the skilled workforce
needed to drive the county’s economy of the future,
and possible impacts on the county’s prosperity and
quality of life.
Since 2011, Char-a-oke has raised $75,000
including over $30,000 raised during the 2013
Char-a-oke at The Barns of Wolf Trap. A portion of
the August 28, 2014 Char-a-oke proceeds will
benefit The Foundation for Fairfax County Public
Schools.
