The Beacon’s Opinion
“It is not best that we should all think alike; it is difference of opinion which makes horse races.” — Mark Twain
THE GOOD GUYS WIN!
Chalk one up for the good
guys. In the May 20 election,
Rob Bovett was swept into
offices as Lincoln County’s
District Attorney on a nearrecord turnout and defeated
incumbent Bernice Barnett
by a 6-4 margin. And Lincoln
County gave Barack Obama
the nod as the Democratic
presidential candidate over
Hillary Clinton, although
his margin of victory here
was smaller than statewide
results.
A case can be made in both
elections that voters are sick and
tired of business as usual. The
voter turnout of 66% of those
eligible seems to underline the
fact that change is in the air in
Lincoln County, Oregon and the
nation as a whole.
Locally, Rob Bovett’s candidacy was probably the driving
force behind the voter turnout.
Mr. Bovett enjoyed widespread
support from all echelons of
the local law enforcement from
Sheriff Dennis Dotson right
down to the men and women
on the job. Respected attorneys
in private practice and county
political movers and shakers
backed Bovett, and he won the
editorial endorsements of the
Newport News Times and the
Depoe Bay Beacon.
Mr. Bovett’s campaign fo-
cused on the fact that Lincoln
County’s crime rate has risen
during Ms. Barnett’s two terms
while the state enjoyed a decrease and that the collaboration needed from arrest to trial
was no longer working. Bovett
stayed on message throughout the campaign. Barnett, by
contrast, chose not to answer
the questions about her management of the office. Instead,
her campaign attacked Bovett,
and that approach was one of
the reasons she lost. The voters
demanded a change.
A press time, Senator Obama
had not officially declared a
victory, but he has been actively
campaigning against Republican nominee John McCain for
weeks. He made some rookie
mistakes in the primaries by
not distancing himself from his
radical pastor, Reverend White,
immediately after the preacher’s
racist statements were brought to
light and by his removal of a flag
pin from his lapel.
But he was fortunate to be
campaigning against a lifelong
Yankee fan raised minutes away
from the Wrigley Field home of
the Chicago Cubs and who has
claimed to be named after Sir
Edmond Hilary, despite the difference in spelling and the fact
that she was born three years before he scaled Everest when only
family and friends knew him.
Clinton added more fuel to the
credibility fire with her lengthy
tale of sniper fire in Bosnia.
It won’t be quite so easy for
Sen. Obama in the general election. He makes great hay of his
initial opposition to the war in
Iraq, but doesn’t mention that the
Senate vote was taken a month
before he took office in January
2003. It was easy to denounce
the war as a private citizen, but
casting a vote against it on the
floor of the U.S. Senate would
have been political suicide at
that time.
Senator Obama is widely
percieved as the most left-wing
member of the Senate, while
Senator McCain is a moderate
Republican. Don’t look for the
general election to turn into a
cakewalk for Sen. Obama. His
naïve approach to many of the
major issues, including health
care, fuel prices and taxes is
about to be exposed to the glare
of the Republican spotlight, and
most of us are not old enough
to remember a presidential
candidate who didn’t promise
wholesale changes in Washington D.C.
Senator Obama will likely
become the 44th President of the
United State of America, but the
election will be a lot closer than
you think.
Closer to home, Oregonians
approved two ballot measures
related to victims’ rights. Lincoln City voters approved a vote
of 9.5% for the transient room
tax and it appears that Oregon
Representative Jean Cowan (DNewport) and Senator Joanne
Verger (D-Coos Bay) will run
unopposed in November as no
Republican filed for either position in the primary.
The Lincoln City vote to
increase the room tax rate was
watched closely in Depoe Bay.
With both Newport and Lincoln
City now at 9.5% and the county
rate of 9% many would like to
bring our tax rate up to 9% to
provide for permanent operating funding of the Kids Zone.
As it stands today, Neighbors
for Kids, the parent organization
of the Kids Zone must beg, borrow and do everything else but
stealing to come up with enough
money to get through the year.
Such an increase would also
free up the $21,000 the City’s
General Fund will donate this
year.
In closing, the Beacon Editorial Board congratulates incoming District Attorney Rob Bovett
for his well-run campaign and
his victory on May 20. We’d
also wish him good luck, but
don’t think he’s going to need
it.

FAB JOB!
To The Editor:
I just want to say thank you
for the fabulous reporting in

IN GOOD HANDS!
To the Editor:
Thank you for running the
article and photos on the Depoe Bay firefighters. They do
not get enough recognition
and I worry they might feel
they are not appreciated. My
neighbors and I are all too old
to volunteer, but if we weren’t
we would be proud to join
the FD.
I feel that we are in good
hands with our chief and
volunteers. Keep up the good
work!

TIPPING POINT?
To The Editor:
I am absolutely certain
your editorial (Beacon #220)
will tip Rob Bovett over the
top and get him elected but
I am not sure that this young
man has any idea of what he’s
going to do or encounter as
District Attorney. He’s going to be dropped right in the
middle of the good ol’ boys
network, the Sheriff and the
police departments, and he’ll
be pulled from every angle
right from the start. It’s going
to be interesting.

She said her daughter had been
assaulted by a teacher twice in
that time period.
REBELS WITHOUT A
CAUSE? The principal of
Toledo High School contacted
the Toledo Police Department
and said he could hear gunshots
in the lower parking lot. The
school was in lock down and
two officers responded.
AND STAY OUT! An assault
complaint was made from a
popular Newport Bar. A woman
was pushed out of the bar by the
bartender and his wife. She said
she was treated roughly, and was

a problem inside. Less than
an hour later, someone outside
was trying to start a fight at the
same bar. An arrest was made
at 1:20AM.

into an argument with the caller
and then hit her. She did not
want to trespass him from the
location, both their arguments
were getting progressively
worse. She said she had drunk

sober. That’s when the argument began.

because he was a child molester.
The caller thought his girlfriend
let the man in, and he wanted an
officer to meet him there.
TRASHY! A suspicious person complaint was made from
the Newport bayfront. A man
wearing all black clothing was
running eastbound. As he did
so, he was knocking over all the
garbage cans in his path.

juvenile problem was reported
near Toledo High School. Three
boys and a girl were smoking at

DONT’S! A call about a dispute
was made from Newport Middle
School. A coach was smoking
on the soccer field. Parents were
very upset and asked him to put
it out. He refused to do so, and
the caller was worried that a
fight might break out.
GRANNIE’S GONE WILD!
A woman believed to be in her
60’s showed up at a supermarket
at 8:30PM. She threatened to
kill and beat up people for no
reason, then left with a handicapped man. Earlier, another

beer and watching the children.
He was described as scruffy
and dirty.

Waldport woman was bitten by
the neighbor’s cat a year ago,
and she reported it at the time.
She said the neighbor doesn’t
keep the cat inside and she
felt like a hostage in her own
home. She was in tears and
very afraid.
SHOOT FIRST, ASK LATER? A Lincoln Beach man
in his 70’s was sitting in his

A disorderly conduct call in
from Nye Beach on a recent
afternoon. A man had just exposed himself in the middle of
a street, and children were present. An arrest was made.

A disturbing call came in from
Newport. For the previous hour
and a half, the caller heard a
little girl screaming “stop it,”
and heard someone hitting her.
The child was three or four
years old.

DEPOE BAY — At its regular meeting on on May 20,
the Depoe Bay City Council
unanimously approved City
Superintendent Terry Owings’
request to purchase a sewer
camera.
This camera will attach to the
sewer cleaner to pinpoint trouble
in the sewer lines. That work
must currently be done with a
contractor. At a cost of nearly
$9800, we can think of plenty of
things to say about a sewer cam.
As none of them are suitable for
a family newspaper, we’ll just
ask, “Where’s Ed Norton when
you really need him?”
Owings also said that bids are
due back for the crosswalks at
Hwy 101 and Collins and Clarke
streets, no later that June 4. That
is a virtual guarantee that the
work will be done as the peak
summer season kicks in, leading
to delays, fender benders, overheating radiators and tempers
and lost business.
Time and again, the city
Council accepts delays on projects without question or comment. The delay in completion
of the Bayview St. project last
year made the city ineligible
for a grant this year for much
needed improvements on South
Point St. It’s time to start asking
questions.
In other council business not
reported elsewhere, the council
adopted revised ordinance #280
to allow two at-large members
to serve with the mayor and
city council on the Depoe Bay
Renewal Agency. That decision
goes against the grain of most
Oregon cities that only have
their elected city councils serving in that capacity. The City
of Newport fired their renewal
agency en masse last year and
the council there now serves as
the agency. We can only hope
Depoe Bay’s decision to seat
unelected parties on our agency
doesn’t come back to bite us in
a place where only the sewer
cam can see.
The council formalized its
earlier consensus by issuing a
Final Order to vacate the unbuilt
Myrtle St. right of way, to be
replaced by a new version at
Whale Cove. The vacation was
made with positive recommendations by both the City staff and
the Fire District.
The council also authorized
expenses for a trip to Redmond by Fran Recht in a sort
of ambassador at large role to
pitch the city’s grant application to acquire Tax lot 700, the
Langston property that bisects
Scenic Park. She will make a
presentation to state officials in
control of grant funding.
And, under the heading of better late than never, the council
proclaimed May 1 a Lupus Alert
Day and May as Lupus Month
and did the same for the week
of May18-24, as Emergency
Medical Services Week. Mayor
White, after hearing no concerns
from the council, gaveled the
meeting to a close a 8:10PM.
KIDS WIN, PARKS TIE, COMMISSIONERS LOSE!
By LARRY STEIDLE
Of the Beacon
DEPOE BAY — Neighbors
for Kids (NFK) was the big
winner for the night at the
May 20 meeting of the Depoe
Bay City Council!
The council agreed to extend NKF lease on the Ainslee
Building to 50 years, making it
much easier for them to pursue
grants for the Kids Zone. The
change in terms may seal a
deal with the Meyer Memorial
Foundation for $80,000. That
money would be earmarked to
finish the inside of the expansion project and furnish and
equip the new space as well.
The expansion will be possible
in large part due to an HUD
grant.
There was some discussion
about the length of the lease,
given that most of those in attendance would be long gone
by then. But Council President
Debbie Davilla noted that long
term leases are not at all uncommon, citing the 100 year
land lease on Salishan Spit as a
local example. Any half-heart-
ed objections vanished, and the
lease extension was granted by
unanimous vote.
Under new business, a moratorium on acquisition of land
for parks did not come to a vote.
The issue was raised by Councilor G.K. “Bud” Romans, and
he felt that “moratorium” was
not exactly the right word. Instead, Bud cited the needs for
police protection, downtown
parking and general street improvements as more important
needs than new city parks.
Parks Commission Chairman
Bill Spores was at the meeting,
and he noted that the grant application to acquire Tax Lot
700 to complete Scenic Park
was already in play and that the
Commission’s only other need
at the time is for a northeast
neighborhood pocket park for
the children in the area.
As the City Council controls
the purse strings, it was pointed
out that frivilous projects by
Parks or any other appointed
commission can be nipped in
the bud, hence there was no
need for such a moratorium.
Councilor Romans also
asked for agenda time to limit
appointments of individuals to
city commissioners, teams and
committees to a maximum of
two panels. After explanations,
it was moved and seconded to
adapt the two appointed seats
per person as policy.
At that point Valerie Sovern,
whose recent resignations from
four city panels were the impetus for the new rule, asked to be
heard. As a motion was on the
table he could have said no, but
Mayor Jim White graciously
allowed her to speak.
After calling the limit a “slap
in the face” to all volunteers,
she once again noted her own
donations of her time. In all our
years in Depoe Bay, we’ve never seen anyone pat themselves
on the back to anywhere the
degree that Ms. Sovern does,
over and over.
The council heard her out
without comment then voted
to impose the limit by a 5-1
vote. With the world once more
safe for democracy, the council
adjourned until June 3!

BARBEQUE BY THE BAY!
By LARRY STEIDLE
Of the Beacon
DEPOE BAY — When you
set out to evaluate a barbeque
joint, forget the ribs, chicken
and sausage. Any moron with
a good basting sauce (mop,
in the BBQ vernacular) can
make decent ribs and chicken,
and few people have ever met
a sausage they didn’t like.
The stuff that your BBQ
dreams are made of and the criteria to judge a BBQ restaurant
are the beef briskets and pork
shoulders. And The Riptide
BBQ in Depoe Bay passes the
brisket and pulled pork test with
flying colors!
Owners Zeke and Lisa Olsen have opened one of the
finest barbeque restaurants (or
“shack,” as Zeke calls it) west
of the Mississippi, and probably in the entire country. Zeke
learned his trade growing up in
the central Atlantic states, and
most of his family lives in the
southeast. Carolina BBQ is one
of the definitive styles of U.S.
barbeque.
The massive covered smokers
are the first things you notice
about Riptide. The fireboxes
and water holder are separate
and pass their smoke and steam
through the smokers, lend-

slow cooked until you can cut
them with a spoon and the pork

Riptide.
Ribs come in thirds and half
racks, the chicken in quarters
and halves. Brisket and pork
comes in sandwiches, meals
and pounds, each cooked with
Zeke’s secret rubs — “Magic
Dust” on the pork, “Ripides
Cascade Rub” on the brisket.
There are other options on the
menu, but anyone who goes to
a barbeque shack for a burger is
missing the boat.
The sides are all classics —
corn bread, pork and beans, cole
slaw and potato, macaroni and
three bean salads. when they
opened, they offered a yuppie
side dish, red new potatoes in
herb butter, but that option died
from a complete lack of interest.
And, speaking of yuppies, The
Riptide ain’t no fern bar — the
chicken is served with the skin
intact. If you’re worried about
fat and cholesterol, have a hand
full of carrots for lunch the day
you dine.

when selecting their suppliers, and the extra effort pays
off in spades. All meats come

open for the season, Barking Dog Farms
will supply all the produce.
The delights of The Riptide don’t stop
at the menu. They’ll soon be offering
daily specials as well. Zeke recently test
drove a flank steak with outstanding results, so look for that option on a regular
basis. On Thursday, May 29, they hosted
their first smoked prime rib dinner. That
will also be offered in the future, with
reservations required.
They will also handle off-site catered
events for picnics, gatherings, family
reunions and company parties. Besides
barbeque, they’ll also do a seafood boil.
Shrimp, crawfish, clams and mussels with
corn on the cob can make a great event,
and, if you want to pay the piper, you
could probably talk them into lobster and
crab. And, if you order well in advance,
they’ll do a whole turkey deep-fried to
perfection. For all special events, call
921-7162 or go to www.riptidebbq.com.
The Riptide will offer three microbrews
in 22 ounce bottles, light and dark ales and
a lager made by a local Newport brewery.
They’ll also offer house red and white
wines. And, in addition to soft drinks,
you’ll find sweet tea. It’s a southern tradition with enough sugar in it to rot your
teeth, but it tastes so good.

If you’ve got room, they’ve got moon
pies and peanut butter pie, and Zeke will
shortly introduce his homemade cheesecakes. And they promise they will soon
acquire a forklift to get you to your car

The Riptide has been a smash hit since
they fired up the pits. They went through
300 lbs. of meat on their first day and
have been playing to packed houses ever
since. And they’ve already got loyal local
customers. After a 12 hour soak in brine,
Zeke smoked a 20 lb. turkey for Barry and
Sharon Philpott of Pirate Coffee. Barry
told the Beacon it was the best he’d ever
eaten. And this writer went through 3 lbs.

GALA SOIRéE AT WHALE COVE INN!
By THE STAFF
Of the Beacon
DEPOE BAY — Carl and
Vicki Finseth and Bart Barrowclough recently hosted an
open house at their stunning
new lodging establishment, The
Whale Cove Inn. The gala event
was also the launching point
for their boutique restaurant, 44
Degrees, with noted chef Jesse
Otero at the helm.
The Whale Cove Inn was built
from the ground up with luxury
in mind and stunning views of
historic Whale Cove from every
window. Whale Cove is believed
by many to be the actual summer home of Sir Fracis Drake’s
Golden Hind in 1579, and was
definitely a landing point of
bootleggers during Prohibition.
The tastefully appointed suites
all feature private decks with hot
tub spas and contemporary gas
fireplaces. It is definitely going
to become the site of numerous
second honeymoons and any
other excuse that can be found
to visit this version of paradise
on the half shell.
Chef Otero will serve a seven
course prix fixe dinner on a
reservation only basis with seatings at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Jesse’s
impressive resume includes a 5
year stint at the Bay House.

Depoe Bay Man Was
Infamous ‘D.B. Cooper!’
By RICK BEASLEY
Of the Beacon
DEPOE BAY — He was the
soldier who became a skyjacker, the skyjacker who became a
priest, and the priest who lived
and died in Depoe Bay!
A fantastic yarn? Not according to Galen Cook, a Spokane,
Wash. lawyer who is one of the
nation’s leading authorities on
D.B. Cooper, the famous air pirate who skyjacked a Northwest
Orient Boeing 727 from Seattle
to Portland on the night of Nov.
24, 1971 and disappeared into
popular history when he bailedout with $200,000 in ransom
money.
In an exclusive interview
with the Beacon, Cook revealed
how he became convinced that
former Depoe Bay mystery man
Wolfgang Gossett was, in fact,
the infamous skyjacker D.B.
Cooper.
Galen Cook has been on the
trail of D.B. Cooper since the
1980s and has interviewed hundreds of people close to the case,
including eyewitnesses on the
ill-fated flight, airplane crewmembers, aviation and parachuting experts, FBI agents and even
other suspects. The trail seemed
to go cold at every turn until a
break in the case in late 2007,
thanks to the national radio show

late-night program for 2.5 mil-

people founded by Art Bell and
hosted now by George Nouri and
on Saturday nights by Ian Punnett. Punnett was interviewing
Cook when a caller — Gossett’s
son, Greg, a corrections officer
and one of five children — said
he believed his father was D.B.
Cooper.
Family members have helped
the police solve thousands of
important crimes such as the
Unabomber case, so Galen Cook
took the tip seriously and began
a six-month investigation that
brought him on at least four occasions to Depoe Bay where he
interviewed people who knew
“Wolf” Gossett intimately.
Among the people he spoke with
were Depoe Bay resident C.J.
Winter, Gossett’s caretaker in the
last years of his life, a Newport
attorney who claimed to have
known Gossett’s dark secret and
even the editor of the Depoe Bay
Beacon, Rick Beasley, who knew
Gossett as a friend and wrote his
obituary on the day he died, Sept.
1, 2003.
Dozens of other people who
knew Gossett including family
members and ex-wives, people
with whom he served in the
military, co-workers in the court
system and law enforcement officials who knew him as a private
investigator cooperated and in
many cases revealed their belief
that Gossett carried an ominous
secret that had something to do
with the D.B. Cooper case. He
often dropped hints about the
skyjacking that some people
took as merely a fascination for
the topic.
“He told his last wife, Elaine
Hetschel, that he would write
D.B. Cooper’s epitath,” Cook
said. “There were others that
said he always talked about D.B.
Cooper. There was all this third-
person narrative, but he never
told the people closest to him, ‘I
did the job.’”
But Gossett did confess to at
least two people, according to
Cook. One is a retired Salt Lake
City judge who was Gossett’s
boss and close friend when he
worked in the Salt Lake City
public defender’s office.
“Wolfgang and I were on very
good terms,” the judge recalled in
his interview with Galen Cook.
“In 1977 he walked into my office and closed the door and said
he thought he might be in some
trouble, that he was involved in a
hijacking in Portland and Seattle
a few years ago and that he might
have left prints behind. He said
he was D.B. Cooper. I told him to
keep his mouth shut and don’t do
anything stupid, and not to bring
it up again.”
The other person who claims
to have known Gossett’s secret is
a retired Newport attorney who
befriended Gossett and once took
him on a mysterious trip to a Vancouver, B.C. bank where some
of the ransom money may have
been stashed in a lock box.
“A lot of credible people in his
past told me that Gossett could
have been D.B. Cooper,” Cook
said. “They believe he could
have gotten away with it. He
had the training, the motive and
the opportunity, and the more I
got into this case the more he
started to become the most viable
suspect ever. The circumstantial
evidence is really strong. I feel
we’ve got the right guy.”
Cook spent time at the C.J.
Winter home in Depoe Bay
where he went through the belongings of Gossett and collected
a bandana with a set of Airborne
wings that Wolfgang wore at all
times. The bandana contains hair
strands that could provide conclusive DNA proof that Gossett
was the hijacker. The only thing
standing in the way is cooperation from the FBI, which claims
to have a DNA sample from the
clip-on tie that D.B. Cooper left
aboard the airplane, as well as
a partial print from a cocktail
glass. The much-vaunted federal agency has been silent on
the issue up to now, including a
FBI COMPOSITE SKETCHES (left and right) of D.B. Cooper,
painstakingly drawn from over 40 eyewitnesses. At center top
is Wolgang Gossett upon his retirement from the U.S. Army
in 1974; at center bottom is Gossett in 1971, the year of the
skyjacking — the most remarkable likeness ever seen by
investigator Galen Cook.
and retired from the Army at Ft.
Lewis, Wash., in 1973, less than
two years after the notorious
skyjacking.
Gossett returned to Utah,
where he had inaugurated the
ROTC program at Weber State
College, and became a private
detective specializing in money
fraud, cults and missing persons.
His biggest moment came when
he assisted the FBI in rescuing a
woman from the Bhagwan Rajneesh’s compound in Antelope,
Ore. Among the documents Galen Cook found among Gossett’s
personal belongings at the Depoe
Bay home of C.J. Winter was a
letter of commendation from the
FBI, which still has an investigator assigned to the D.B. Cooper
case. Gossett also worked for the
public defender’s office in Salt
Lake City, where he was wellknown and respected by police
and court officials including the
police chief of Ogden, Utah, who
said Gossett “could eat bullets
Page 17 • DEPOE BAY BEACON • May 28, 2008
and call it a meal.”
In another amazing twist
to Gossett’s life, he officially
changed his name to “Wolfgang”
and became a priest in the Old
Catholic Church, SLC Diocese,
in 1988 — a move that answered,
according to family members, a
spiritual calling that he’d always
heard. Finally, in 1994, Gossett
moved to Newport where he
worked for attorney Dan Poling, a Depoe Bay resident who
died several years ago. Gossett
retired to Depoe Bay and became
known as a man about town who
had many friends, often won on
the gaming machines at Gracie’s
Sea Hag and spoke-out at City
Council meetings.
What many people didn’t
know is that Gossett had a
dark side, including four failed
marriages, five children and
money troubles from gambling.
Cook’s research places Gossett
in Ogden, Utah, around the
time of the skyjacking. He was
an ROTC instructor making
$15,000 per year, and newly
separated from his wife. Galen
Cook said that Gossett chose
the date for the heist because
he had a week off from his
duties.
“Opportunity, and a brilliant plan, was the key to the
whole D.B. Cooper thing,”
Cook said. “He didn’t have to
be at work or at home. He had
the level of skills and ability
to plan the entire thing with
military precision, and to not
only parachute from the plane
but to survive.”
According to Cook, Gossett
took a flight from Ogden to San
Francisco where he donned his
Dan Cooper disguise. The name
‘Dan’ was Gossett’s inside joke.
He had a brother, now deceased,
named Danny. Growing up, he
would always blame Danny
whenever he got into trouble
by declaring, “Danny did it!”
The name Cooper appears to
be randomly picked. Portland
police mistakenly came up with
the initials “D.B.” during their
investigation, and the name
stuck.
“My research indicates that
the reason he avoided detection
on the night of the jump and the
following days was because
searchers were looking in the
wrong state,” Cook said. “D.B.
Cooper cleared the Columbia
River and landed in Oregon,
where he made his way back
to the airport and returned to
Utah. It took him three days,
in and out.”
Galen Cook has tied-up many
of the loose threads of the case,
such as the mystery over some
of the ransom money that was
discovered on a Columbia
River bar in 1980. He also
explains how D.B. Cooper
selected the one parachute
among the three brought to the
aircraft that actually worked.
But those details, and others,
will have to simmer until the
publication of his book. Cook
left for Alaska on May 1, where
he will sequester himself at his
father’s home for three months
to write the last chapter on the
D.B. Cooper caper.
“It’s an incredible story,”
he said. “The air pirate who
became a priest and marries
and buries people when he’s
not out helping the FBI solve
criminal cases. And in later
life he becomes civic-minded
by attending City Council
meetings in Depoe Bay and
becomes a late-life jogger who
runs around town wearing his
military parachute badge on his
headband to remind himself of
who he really is. This story is
going to be a blockbuster.”

JUST FOR THE HALIBUT!
By DUKE SAVAGE
Of the Beacon
When ocean conditions are right, taking your limit of pacific halibut is as close
as a rare thing you’ll find in the world
of fishing!
The all-depths halibut season offers Oregon anglers their only legitimate shot at the
trophy of a lifetime. In 2007, an angler on a
private boat took a 106 lb fish. He likened
70th
Year!
the struggle to land this monster to hooking
the fender of a ‘55 Buick. In 2006, a lucky
angler on Capt. Dave Debelloy’s “Enterprise” hauled in a 153 lb. fish, but he was
too weary to make a snappy remark. Both
halibut were taken at the Chicken Ranch,
the normal destination of the Depoe Bay
charter fleet.
You may want to spend a few weeks in
the gym before setting sail — halibut fishing
is a heavy lifting proposition. Don’t make
a halibut expedition your first trip on the
ocean. Try a 5 hour bottomfishing trip first
to find out if you’ve got sea legs.
Oregon anglers will need a salmon/steelhead/halibut/sturgeon tag in addition to their
basic license. The tags sell for $21.50 and
are good all year for those species. Out of
stater’s and Oregonians who don’t fish all
that much can take their halibut on a $12

daily license.
The Spring all-depths season will continue every Thursday, Friday and Saturday
until June 14, at which point the catch to
date will be evaluated. If quota remains, the
season will re-open every other Friday, Saturday and Sunday beginning June 28. Look
for the Spring season to last well into July.
The Summer season begins in August.
When you return to port, your fish will be
filleted by experts. All you have to do is put
them in the oven or frying pan and enjoy!
While we’re on the subject of deep water
trips there may be some good news ahead
for 2009. The Pacific Fisheries Management Council (PFMC) will probably receive a strong recommendation to extend
the season outside of 40 fathoms by two
months, allowing fishing in April and May.
This is a trophy lingcod fishery that attracts
serious anglers. These trips are money trips,
good news for the charter fleet. But don’t
count your chickens just yet — PFMC has
the last word.
To book your halibut trip or the bottomfishing trip of a lifetime, call Tradewinds
Charters, 765-2345 or other area offices
and get ready to rumble!

BOTTOMS UP!
By DUKE SAVAGE
Of the Beacon
Go deep, young fishers (and
old), go deep! With salmon
on the ropes waiting for the
knockout punch that will
put the private sector on the
Oregon coast in the unemployment lines, it’s time to hit rock
bottom with some of the finest
fishing in recent memory!
Limits of tasty rockfish with
plenty of action on bruising lingcod are the norm, not the exception of trips out of Depoe Bay.
And the action is not exclusively
on black rockfish, the staple of
charter fishing in Depoe Bay.
Capt. Dan Zimmerman of
the Mariner, who runs for
Tradewinds, had a short load
on a recent Sunday. With sky
high prices for diesel, he fished
the outside edges of the reefs off
Government Point and Cavalier.
His customers were rewarded
with an excellent catch that
included big vermillons, copper
rockfish and cabezon.
And crabbing has taken a turn
for the better recently, with most
trips returning with 2-4 Dungeness per angler. That’s money
in the bank. A conservative
estimate of an average weight
of two pounds for keepers will
coast you less than $4 per pound

NEW POSTMASTER LIKES WORKING IN SMALL TOWNS!
By Gary MacDonald
Of the Beacon
Meet Lonette Schriner, Depoe Bay’s new postmaster since
April 21!
Schriner moved here from
Roseburg, where she lived most
of her life and attended Umpqua
Community College. A 10-year
veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, she worked as a postal clerk
at the Winston Post Office in
Roseburg.
Schriner describes Depoe Bay
as a “beautiful area,” though her
first week living here mirrored
the typical experience of Oregon
coastal weather in winter time. “It
rained and stormed, and I thought
to myself, oh, boy,” Schriner
says.
“I’m used to living in small
towns, and I like it,” she adds,
noting that she has already flown
kites on the beach and looks forward to some serious crabbing
in the months ahead. Schriner
is also eager to meet people and
get involved in local volunteer
activities.
To reach Schriner and other Post Office staff, call (541)
765-2480 during regular business
hours.

DEPOE BAY — Make way
for a new generation — California gray whale mothers are
passing by Depoe Bay right
now with this year’s calves in
tow!
The annual northbound migration from Baja birthing and
feeding grounds to their summer
feeding stations in the Bering
and Chukchi Seas is underway.
And, in the time-honored tradition of saving the best for last,
mothers and their babies bring
up the rear of the procession.
As of May 22, sightings have
been excellent recently with
more females and calves on the
way. Whale Watching Center
Director Morris Grover told
the Beacon that the migration
seems to be running a little late
this year, and that fact will hope-

An Oregon Vista
DEPOE BAY — The Silver Heron Gallery of Depoe
Bay is proud to present “An
Oregon Vista,” a new body
of work by artist Cathy
Locke, with a two-day open
house artist’s reception
beginning on Friday, June
6th.
Cathy’s newest collection
is inspired by the beautiful
Oregon Coast. She has transformed the rock formations,
sea shores and cliffs into a
rich collection of abstract
landscapes. Using bases of
earth tones overlaying each
other and complementing
them with hues of blue, these
paintings create a unique
depth and richness. Layers
of color were built up with
thin washes the artist allowed
to run down the canvas over
completed parts of the painting. Then cold wax was
added to the paint to build
up textures in concentrated
areas. Cathy will be in the
gallery on Saturday, June 7th,
to present a live demonstration of her techniques.
“I was looking at the beautiful strata of color in the
rocks and cliffs of the coastal
area. The focus of this work
was not to duplicate these
scenes, but to extract the
textures and feelings of this
environment,” says Locke.
These paintings truly capture
the magnificent rough terrain
and eloquence of the Oregon
Coast.
The Artist’s Palate, the
gallery’s wine salon, will be
open for tasting, where wine
can be purchased by the glass
or bottle, with case discounts
available. There will be live
music in the piano bar on
both Friday and Saturday
from noon to 7 p.m., hors
d’oeuvres will be served on
both days, and a drawing will
be held for a complimentary
piece of Oregon Sunstone
jewelry. Show dates are
June 6th through July 31st.

located in downtown Depoe
Bay at 15 SE Bay Street. For

Russel is an old friend of Jerome Grant, who owns the Sea

The two met in the 90’s when

Russel says that when he

He was “monied up,” as they

case right now; New home inventories peaked at 598,000 in
July 2006 and stand at 482,000
homes at the end of March.
This inventory is equivalent to
11 months of supply, a 25 year
high-but it is similar to 1974,
1982 and 1991 levels, which
saw a subsequent slowing in the
home-price declines within the
next six months.
Excerpt from Dan Kadlec of

mortgage at today’s rate of 5.5%.

costs rise just half a point to 6%,
your monthly payment would be

nothing. Meanwhile, home
prices might steady and sellers
might become less willing to

Excerpt from Cyril MoulleBerteaux’s article in the Journal states;
Since then, house prices have
fallen 10%-15% while incomes
have kept growing (albeit more
slowly recently) and mortgage
rates have come down 70 basis points from their highs. As
a result, it now takes 19% of
monthly income for the average home buyer, and 31% of
monthly income for the first
time home buyer, to purchase
a house. In other words, homes
on average are back to being
affordable as during the best of
