of America
Tomorrow the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the
Immaculate Concep on, the solemn dogma defined by
Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1854. As Our Lady Immaculately
Conceived is the patroness of the United States of
America, this is a holy day of obliga on in the United
States.
Through the centuries the Church has become ever
more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God,
was redeemed from the moment of her concep on.
That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Concep on
confesses, as Blessed Pope Pius IX proclaimed on December 8, 1854: "The most Blessed Virgin Mary was,
from the first moment of her concep on, by a singular
grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the
merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin." — Catechism of the Catholic Church
Hail Mary, full of grace". For thousands of centuries,
millions of mes per day the Virgin Mary is greeted by
the faithful with the gree ng of the Archangel, that we
hear resona ng anew in today’s Gospel.
The sons of the Church learn from the words of the Archangel Gabriel that the fullness of the mystery of God’s grace was realized in Holy Mary. St Paul the Apostle teaches us that the Father made all fullness dwell in His Incarnate Son (c.f. Col 1:12-20),
which overflows from Christ’s head and spills out on His Mys cal Body that is the Church. Before descending in Body, Christ’s
fullness was spread in a unique and unrepeatable way on Mary, predes ned from eternity to be the Mother of God.
Blessed Pope Pius IX on the 8th of December 1854 proclaimed the Dogma of the faith revealed by God that the Blessed Virgin
Mary "in the first instant of her concep on, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus
Christ, the Saviour of the human race, was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin" (Denz.-Schonm, 2083). If the official
proclama on of the dogma is rela vely recent, the profession of faith by Chris ans and the liturgy is very ancient in this regard.
Furthermore, four years later the same Virgin Mary, appearing in Lourdes to St Bernade e, confirmed the truth of the doctrine
by presen ng herself with the tle ‘I am the Immaculate Concep on’.
Mary was Immaculate because she had to be the Mother of God. She, herself has received the original grace of purity and the
final state of the blessed life that we also, by collabora ng with Divine Grace, hope one day to receive.
Immaculate Mary is full of grace. She is not only Christ’s disciple, who with the help of grace has overcome the chains of sin,
but she is to us Trinita s nobile triclinium, the noble res ng place of the Holy Trinity (St Thomas Aquinas, Exposito Saluta onis
Angelicae, I). The Immaculate, full of grace, will always be Mother and Queen for that elect part of the Church that we hope
one day to join, that will one day joyfully sing before the Almighty.

THE WOMAN’S CENTER
Christmas is about love and
family and that is what we
strive to be for the many women in difficult pregnancies who
come to us. This year we saved
approximately 1,000 babies
from abor on and helped their mothers with
our support and care. Last year over 1,400
children and adults a ended our annual client
Christmas par es. This year’s par es will be on
the north side, 12/13 and the south side
12/20. To donate food or a large quan ty of
paper products, please call Paige at 773-7948807.
We need 3 walkers, 4 toddler beds, 4
strollers, 2 double strollers, 2 bassinets, 4
swings, 2 pack n plays, 2 fixed side cribs, crib
sheets, 4 bouncers, 2 changing tables, 2 high
chairs and 2 infant car seat/carriers. It will be a
great help if you can deliver these to us. For

TORCH RUN – DES PLAINES/CHICAGO
The first mass to be celebrated on the feast day, December
12, at midnight, will be celebrated by Archbishop Blase
Cupich, Auxiliary Bishop Alberto Rojas and Fr. Marco Mercado at the Chapel/Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 1100
North River Road in Des Plaines. This overnight celebra on
honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas,
begins with Mass at 6 p.m. At 10 p.m., Fr. Marco Mercado
will bless the torches that hundreds of people represen ng
Hispanic parishes throughout the Archdiocese will carry in a
run from the shrine to their respec ve parishes. Runners
will pass through the suburbs of Rosemont, Schiller Park,
River Grove, Elmwood Park and several other Chicago neighborhoods. Upon arriving at their parishes, runners will place
the torch at a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the
“mañanitas” (songs that honor Mary, the Mother of God)
will be sung, followed by Mass at approximately 5 a.m.

Statement of Archbishop Blase J. Cupich
in Response to President Obama's
Announcement
of Relief for Immigrant Families
November 26, 2014
In concert with my brother bishops throughout the United
States, I want to extend my gra tude and support of the
President’s recent announcement of administra ve relief for
immigrant families, affec ng as many as 4.5 million of the
current 12 million immigrant men, women and children who
are now living among us.
Since 2001, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
and local Catholic groups have worked relessly in support of
the immediate needs of immigrants, in support of families
separated by deporta on. Priests for Jus ce for Immigrants,
the Sisters and Brothers of Immigrants, Pastoral Migratoria,
the Polish Immigrant to Immigrant Ministry, the Immigra on
Parish Coordinators in non-immigrant congrega ons and
dedicated people of faith from many parishes across the
Archdiocese have worked relessly for these families. There
have been prayerful and peaceful advocacy efforts to change
the hearts and minds of legislators to repair our broken immigra on system. Many of our brothers and sisters from other
faith tradi ons have also been working relessly, sharing in
our common goal to alleviate suffering, dispel fear and to
remove the barriers that prevent so many hard working men,
women and their families from being able to pursue their
God-given poten al and fully share their God-given gi s.
This is a me for momentary celebra on, a me to give
thanks for a first step toward immigra on reform for all of
those who are being granted this relief. It is also a me to
mobilize our communi es to assist in helping those affected
by the President’s ac ons to realize the full benefit of what is
being offered. Our Archdiocesan Office of Immigrant Affairs
and Immigra on Educa on will be preparing parishioners to
assist immigrants in our parishes and surrounding communies in this process.
However, we must not forget that there are millions of people le out of these recent relief decisions, s ll forced to live
in the shadows.
Therefore, we must con nue to support these efforts na onally and locally un l Comprehensive Compassionate Immigraon Reform is achieved for all. I pledge to con nue to work
with my brother Bishops through the Catholic Conference of
Illinois, and in our local Archdiocese, con nuing the long legacy of support of my predecessor, Cardinal George.

Święto Obowiązkowe
ościół katolicki 8 grudnia obchodzi uroczystość Niepokalanego Poczęcia Najświętszej Maryi
Panny. Wydarzenie Niepokalanego Poczęcia Maryi jest zasługą specjalnej Bożej łaski. Tajemnica
ta pokazuje szczególną rolę Maryi a także, że każdy z nas cieszy się Bożą pomocą w zadaniach, które
Bóg stawia na drodze naszego życia.

Czym jest niepokalane poczęcie? Niepokalane poczęcie jest czymś innym od dziewiczego poczęcia
Jezusa Chrystusa przez Maryję z Ducha Św. Boża interwencja w wypadku początku życia Maryi nie polegała na zastąpieniu
działania rodziców, ale na ochronie jej duszy przed skutkami grzechu pierworodnego. Oczywiście Syn Boży w swoim
człowieczeństwie również nie był dotknięty grzechem. Według wiary katolickiej każdy człowiek przychodzący na świat jest
naznaczony grzechem pierworodnym. Grzech ten jest "przenoszony" wraz z przekazywaniem natury ludzkiej, która u
Prarodziców, ze względu na ich nieufność i nieposłuszeństwo Bogu - o czym mówią pierwsze rozdziały Biblii - została
pozbawiona pierwotnej świętości i sprawiedliwości. Grzech pierworodny - jak wyjaśnia Katechizm Kościoła Katolickiego (nr
404) - nie jest popełniany lecz zaciągany, nie jest aktem ale stanem, w jakim poczyna się człowiek. Z grzechu pierworodnego
uwalnia człowieka dopiero chrzest święty. Wolność od grzechu i doskonałość nie sprawia, że Maryja staje się daleka ludziom.
Wręcz przeciwnie, Jej wspólnota z każdym człowiekiem jest nieporównywalna z niczym, ponieważ to co ludzi dzieli, co oddala
ich od siebie, to przede wszystkim wyrastający z grzechu egoizm, którego w Maryi nie było. Dlatego jest Ona Matką nie tylko

ON THE MENDOZA LINE, AND ADVENT

Every November, the Private Label Manufacturers Associa on
puts on its big trade show here in Chicago. Since my company
buys from hundreds of suppliers belonging to the PLMA, and
since many of these suppliers a end the show, my QA colleagues
and I o en a end as well. Typically I walk the floor to visit the
vendors I have on-going projects--or issues--with, but this year I
also a ended PLMA’s Execu ve Educa on Program. The program’s run by the Food Marke ng faculty from St. Joseph’s University, and while we discussed certain elements of the private
label business I already had some exposure to, we also discussed
something I’d never heard of before: the Mendoza Line.
First, the backstory… Mario Mendoza played ball for the Pirates, Mariners, and Rangers between 1974 and ’82, and let’s just
say that as far as hi ng goes, he played good defense. Hence,
per Wikipedia, “The Mendoza Line is an expression in baseball…
deriving from the name of shortstop player (Mendoza) whose
ba ng average is taken to define the threshold of incompetent
hi ng. The cutoff point is most o en said to be .200 (although
Mendoza's career average was .215) and, when a posi on player's ba ng average falls below that level, the player is said to be
‘below the Mendoza Line.’ This is o en thought of as the offensive threshold below which a player's presence in MLB can’t be
jus fied, regardless of his defensive abili es.”
Addi onally per Wikipedia, “The expression has been also
extended to other realms to indicate a low-end cut-off point,”
and this is the context in which it was presented during the PLMA
Execu ve Educa on Program. Here, Jim Hertel, a representa ve
of Willard Bishop Consul ng, was speaking about various store
formats [Fresh, E-commerce (food and consumables), Dollar,
Wholesale Club, Tradi onal Supermarket, etc.] and how nontradi onal formats con nue to have the advantage in real sales
growth rates. Hertel at this point compared the growth rate of
the various formats against the annual rate of infla on--which he
posi oned as the Mendoza Line--and explained that formats
above the line are on target to outpace infla on. Not so, the others. I was intrigued by this no on of the Mendoza Line, and as
I told the guy si ng next to me--Sco --we can apply it to many
things. Yeah. I told him that we need to consider it in our work,
our home life, our community involvement, everything. Because
if the Mendoza Line is the baseline for mediocrity--if it’s the least
we can do--then we want to be well above it in all that we do.
According to our re red pope, “The world offers us comfort, but
we are not called to comfort. We are called to greatness.” Exactly. We’ve now arrived at the Second Sunday of Advent, when the
Bap st again appears in the desert. Isaiah observes that John is
the voice in the wilderness preparing the way of the Lord. Well,
the way of the Lord doesn’t call for mediocrity. As we rush toward Christmas Day, let’s keep the Mendoza Line in mind. As we
prepare to receive the Christ, let’s do way, way more than the
least we can do.

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first
child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each
month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of
