Saskatchewan Country Music Association ~ 2008
2008 SCMA
A like to welcome you all to Prince Albert and the 2008 Saskatche-
s President of the Prince Albert Country Music Association, I would
wan Country Music Association Awards Weekend. While the 2007 awards
seem like they only happened yesterday, SCMA members have covered a
lot of ground since then. From the members that have received national
attention and awards, to the large number of young, new members that
are finding their place on stages across Saskatchewan and beyond, Saskatchewan is once again proving to be the hotbed of Country music in
Canada. The exposure and networking that the SCMA provides these entertainers plays no small part in their success, and can help expand their profile to the next level.
I would invite you to take in all that this weekend provides for you. From the new Artists making
their first Showcase appearance, to the veteran performers that will be taking the Awards Show
stage, this is truly the best Country Music Saskatchewan has to offer-all in one place.
As well, a great big thanks to John Quinn for Chairing the weekend, and the PACMA volunteers
that make this event possible, and believe that the Awards Weekend is worthy of their tireless efforts. Your time and talents are truly appreciated!

Country music speaks to our experience, our troubles, our hopes and our dreams as individuals. As
Canada’s heartland, Saskatchewan is home to the best and most trailblazing country music north of
Nashville. This event is true testament of the immense musical talent and a spotlight for our province’s
emerging talent in country music.
Congratulations to all the nominees and award winners. Thank you to the dedicated volunteers and
the Prince Albert chapter of the S.C.M.A. for organizing and producing this fantastic event.

n behalf of my colleagues on City Council and the citizens of Prince
Albert, I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome

Friday Night
Julian Austin
C
ountry music has by tradition offered itself as a haven to the hard drinking,
hard living misfits, who fought their way back to the light. Julian Austin is
one of these – a maverick, renegade, rebel and after a lifetime of struggles
has now earned the respected title of “The Bad Boy With The Big Heart” of country
music. Julian Austin started writing songs at the age of 13 and at 15 he took his dad’s guitar
out of the closet and started to learn how to play. While learning how to perfect his
craft in both playing and writing he realized music was going to be his lifelong soul
mate and without a doubt his destiny, he’s never looked back since. For the past 25
years Julian has gone through many changes in his music, from heavy metal to rock
to 80’s pop and eventually to his love for country music.
In 1996 along with being signed to a major album deal with BMG Canada Julian
teamed up with friend, accomplished producer and writer, Daniel Leblanc, to record what
has become Julian’s best selling CD to date “What My Heart Already Knows”. Soon after the
1997 debut release of this CD it earned Julian a certified CRIA gold record (50k+ sales) and the
1997 Wrangler Rising Star Award from the Canadian Country Music Association. His first single
“Little Ol’ Kisses” went #1 on radio and also made the CMT Top 30 Videos of 1997.
After releasing his follow up CD “Back In Your Life” in early 2000
it earned him six CCMA nominations. His band “The Austinators”
won “Best Back Up Band” - two years in a row. The following year
Austin severed ties with his record company BMG Music amicably
and kept touring intensely across Canada keeping his die-hard and
loyal fan base entertained while writing
songs for his next project.
Shortly after leaving BMG, Austin
was approached by Civilian Records
founder and president Myles Goodman,
front man of the world-renowned rock
band “April Wine”. In August of 2002
“Bulletproof” was released, but due to
creative differences it would be the
only album under this new label for
Julian.
In early 2004 Julian had the opportunity to be part of a show
tour that was sent to entertain our troops with seven shows in
Bosnia. Julian loved the experience and has gone on to make three
more trips overseas to entertain the troops in Southwest Asia and
Afghanistan. He has also traveled to numerous Canadian Forces
bases across Canada including Goose Bay, Labrador and Alert,
Nunavik to perform for our soldiers and their families. Austin says
with pride “of all the great things that I have experienced in my
lifetime performing for our soldiers sits at the top of my list - the
feeling I had being over there with the fine men and woman of our
Canadian Armed Forces is unexplainable. I hope to make a great
Ambassador for our CF one day.”
Julian’s new cd, which he coproduced and named “The Red &
White”, is a dedication to those soldiers,
past and present, who have served our
country. Julian strongly supports those
fine men and women and therefore is
donating $5.00 from every copy sold to
“The Sapper Mike McTeague Wounded
Warriors Fund” a fund established to
improve the morale and well being of
our injured soldiers. He has also made this cd available exclusively
at all 40 Canex stores across Canada and through their website at
www.cfpsa.com/canex. This devotion and dedication has earned
him the nickname G.I. Jules from the Canadian soldiers he has
come to meet, a name Austin says he is proud to be called.”
Amber Schneider
Amber held her CD release party for her debut album
“Fearless” in 2007. Since then singles released off the album
have been charting in Canada and abroad. Her latest single
“Half The Fun” spent more than twenty weeks on the ECMA
Chart, climbing to #23 in just three weeks. Amber has
been busy attending Grant MacEwan College as a Voice
Performance Major for the last few years. She was chosen
as a 2007 Generation B Finalist in Bootlegger’s national
competition recognizing outstanding achievements in
youth. Amber has performed at many venues including
CCMA’s SaskMusic VIP Event, Swift Current Country
Jamboree, Eagle Creek Jamboree and has opened for Julian
Austin, Aaron Pritchett, Derric Ruttan and Emerson Drive.
With Amber’s solid vocals and a perfect blend of grace and
attitude on stage there is definitely a promising future ahead
for this young lady in the country music industry.
JJ Guy
Austin says with pride,
“of all the great things that I
have experienced in my lifetime
performing for our soldiers sits
at the top of my list.”
The Rusty Augers (will be part of the entertainment for the FRIDAY NIGHT KICK-OFF)
This group was busy in 2007, completing their debut album, “Damn You Rusty Auger!”, which received airplay on CBC Radio 1
and Radio 3, CJTR, and numerous community radio stations across Saskatchewan. Performance highlights included Junofest 2007
in Saskatoon, The Cathedral Village Arts Festival in Regina, opening for Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats and playing a show with the
legendary pedal steel player Tex Emery. Recently they played at Calgary’s A Bar Named Sue: Johnny Cash theme bar. They are now
completing their second full length CD, due in 2008. With a slate of shows booked for the upcoming year, The Rusty Augers show
no signs of slowing down.

Katie Hess
Craig Jenkins
Tommy John Ehman
When four-year-old Katie Love
stepped on stage to sing at a church
talent show, she knew she’d found
her lifelong calling. Her natural
ability, polished performances, and
connection with her audience make
her a popular performer wherever
she goes.In May 2007, Katie was
selected the 620 CKRM Big Country
Talent Show 2007 CHAMPION. For
winning the talent show, Hess has
received a recording session, which
includes radio airplay of her debut
single “Great Day To Be In Love”.
In addition to her successes
with CKRM, Katie released an
independently produced gospel/
hymns album and is currently
spending any extra time in the studio
with hopes of releasing her debut
country album late September 2008.
Hess’s endearing personality
teamed with her newly released
single has landed her a spot on
the main stage at the 2008 Craven
Country Jamboree. Indeed, Katie’s
future in the country music scene is
bright!
Craig is a singer song writer, recording
artist from Prince Albert.
He has toured extensively in western
Canada. He has a 10 song cd written and
produced by him. He is doing a tour in
June to promote his cd.Jenkins’ hook-laden
original tunes are a blend of roots and rock
that reveal a unique style reminiscent ofearly
Neil Young, who happens to be among
his biggest influences. Craig’s confident,
resolute strides along his own musical path
could appear to some as indifference to
popular opinion. But listen to the
music, and you’ll know that his attitude
is instead the deepest kind of caring
committment. This, combined with his raw
talent and towering stage presence, make
for a truly memorable artist. His passion
to give everything he’s got is immediately
captivating. He is able to quickly obtain a
rapport, and fans just keep coming back for
more.
Musical troubadour… song and dance
man… entertainer… all describe this
Saskatchewan singer/songwriter, Tommy
John Ehman. Having crafted his skills
on an endless highway of stages across
western Canada, Tommy’s career has
come a long way since the days of cover
songs, bar rooms and dart board tours.
A songwriter at heart and a writer
of strong convictions, he is currently
promoting his 4th CD titled “Wheels of
Life,” which explores his views on our
country Canada and what it means to be
a Canadian and how lucky we are to live
in a country where we’re safe, free and
able to voice our opinions without fear
of repercussion.
His alternative/country sound has
been compared to the likes of Steve
Earle, John Mellencamp and Charlie
Major, which put his music and writing
in fine company. His passion for
songwriting becomes clear as you listen
to his work and for Tommy John Ehman,
the music becomes the message!

Don Mitchell
Don Mitchell started his radio career in 1967 at CKOM in Saskatoon, starting
on a part time basis. In 1969 Don and his family moved to Port Coquilam
B.C. where he worked in construction and continued to do part time radio in
Vancouver doing back up on a gospel music show for a friend of his.
Don and Maria moved to Birch Hills in 1975. In 1982 he started working
at CKBI Radio and CKBI Television. When radio and television split in June of
1985 Don stayed with radio. In 1988 he returned to television as Community
Relations Director and host of the Noon Show where he remained until
mandatory retirement in September of 2006. In January of 2007 Don was offered a position to host a newly created
noon show on Country 900 CKBI Radio called the “Region @ Noon with Don
Mitchell” He also hosts a Southern Gospel Music Show Sunday evenings from
6pm to 8pm which features Saskatchewan Gospel Artists.
Don continues to promote and support Saskatchewan Country Music Artists. If you are interested in doing an interview with Don,
he can be reached at 1-306-763-7421--Ext. 270 email: [email protected]

Kal Hourd
Songwriter’s
With numerous acclamations and major venue performances in such
a short amount of time, Kal has caught the attention of many music
industry professionals, and is creating quite a stir all throughout Canada
and the United States.
Kal is not only a great entertainer, but a true professional who
understands the music business. This self-described Contemporary
Country artist brings an incredible display of energy, humor and passion
for music to each of his live shows. He leaves his audience feeling as
though they know him personally, and wanting to hear more.
As a songwriter, he has been honing his craft for many years and
after a recent showcase in Nashville, the hard work seems to be paying
off. As a result of this showcase, he now has several songs from his
catalogue being actively pitched in Music City.

Donny Parenteau
Julian Austin
Country music has by tradition offered itself as
a haven to the hard drinking, hard living misfits,
who fought their way back to the light. Julian
Austin is one of these – a maverick, renegade,
rebel and after a lifetime of struggles has now
earned the respected title of “The Bad Boy With
The Big Heart” of country music. (See pg. 5 for
more....)

Codie Prevost
2006 SCMA Rising Star singer/songwriter Codie Prevost continues to
gain momentum not only in his home province of Saskatchewan but also
nationally and internationally. This past year Codie had the opportunity to
open for Emerson Drive, Doc Walker, Aaron Pritchett and Gord Bamford. He
recently released “SPIN” the first single from his upcoming sophomore album to
Canadian Country Radio.
Whether in an intimate acoustic setting or with his full band playing his
original songs as well as current and classic country hits, Codie Prevost’s live
performances leave a deep-rooted impression on all, time and time again. With
a bona fide passion for music and a whole hearted commitment to his art and
his fans, Codie is an unquestionable talent.
Influenced by many illustrious artists as well as a wide array of music
genres, this singer/songwriter has developed a sound that is truly unique and
unconventional in the realm of country music.

Anthony Kelly
Anthony Kelly has a
songwriting style that can
tell a story, paint a picture,
convey a feeling and capture
a moment. His songs became
the catalyst in the decision
to record Shifty Morgan’s
2002 nationally distributed
CD “Anything But Wasy” At
the 2005 SCMA Awards
Anthony won Song of the
Year for “Because I Want To” .
Since that time Anthony has
received many offers to cowrite with other artists such
as Brad Johner and Tim Taylor.
Jessica Robinson
Nine time SCMA award winner
Jessica Robinson, is no stranger to
country music. In fact, Jessica has
been has been putting down her
country roots since the ripe old age
of four. Raised in the country with
a father who played guitar around
the campfire and a mother who
painted, it comes as no surprise
that Jessica fell into music and
songwriting as her creative outlet.
Having reached many milestones
in her musical journey thus far,
Jessica considers her growth as a
songwriter to be the most fulfilling
accomplishment (she’s penned
eight songs on her ‘Hummingbird’
album and five on her current
acoustic project, ‘Whirl & Twirl &
Swirl’). The icing on the cake was
winning the 2007 SCMA Song of
the Year award for ‘Hummingbird’
because it recognized Jessica’s
ability as a composer. “To write
about who you are and what you
believe”, she comments, “and have
it accepted by your peers as well as
your fans is the best validation you
can ask for in this business!”
Darlene Tuleta
Darlene has been a fixture in the country music scene for
over 10 years, opening and headlining her own shows. With
her unique and unforgettable voice she created a sound all of
her own.
Darlene’s songwriting skills have earned her several cuts by
other Canadian artists, and looks forward to her own release
this year.

Jim Chute
Greg Smith
It is an honour to be invited to the song writers cafe and to
be surrounded by such talented people. I have recently become
more serious about song writing, realizing that time waits for
no one. My dream is to some day release recordings of my own
material, not for fame but just to say I did. A good friend of mine
from the west flat here in Prince Albert is realizing his dream, and
is helping me to help myself — thanks Donny! My wife Sandi and
our two sons are boosting my confidence in my writing by letting
me honestly know what they think of whatever I am writing, good
or not. I appreciate their honesty. There is a lot to learn about song
writing, but one thing I do know for sure , is that if you write and
sing from the heart you can never go wrong. Ya gotta love it!
