Carter Hall's tower
gets a new look
When 6 tons of steel, wood and copper recently
descended on Covenant's Carter Hall, no one feared
that it was a falling meteor. It was just a new tower cap
for Covenant's "Castle in the Clouds."
The capping of the tower marked the continuation
of the renovation of Carter Hall, Covenant's main
building. The 50-year old building is undergoing a
complete physicial change-over, beginning with the
exterior walls and moving inside to the building's 215
rooms.
Hoisted by crane to its 9-story perch, the 12,000pound copper-covered cap was mounted on the tower
Tuesday, January 15, topping what will later serve as a
small observation room. The tower once served as a
platform for a 350 million candle power beacon light
which shone from atop Lookout Mountain and could
be seen from 100 miles away. The new room, added to
the mountain's 2,000 foot elevation will allow visitors
to see for several miles in all directions.
The design of the tower and its cap was chosen to
complement the Tudor-style appearance of Carter
Hall. The structure, however, is more than just a

novelty. The college's water supply, which the tower
now houses, will be moved to a newly-constructed
tank at ground level, and the tower will provide new
lightning protection for a major part of the building.
The glass-enclosed observation room will serve as a
security booth at night and as a workshop for certain
art and science classes during the day.
The capping is only one part of a three-phase pro¬
cess of Carter Hall's renovation. Special attention has
been given to making the building both economically
and energy efficient. Phase One will see the comple¬
tion of an entirely new exterior surface for the build¬
ing. Phase Two and Phase Three will bring a new
heating and cooling system and a complete redecoration of the building's individual rooms. Eventually the
"Castle in the Clouds" will be completely made over
with modern-day efficiency, while still keeping its old
world charm.

John Moore retires
after thirteen years of service
Covenant parted with a
faithful friend and a loyal
co-worker with the retire¬
ment on February 1 of John
Moore as superintendent of
maintenance and operations
at the college. At sixty-seven,
he has served beyond retire¬
ment age, and has ably cared
for the buildings at Covenant
— especially the campus'
main building. Carter Hall.

He and his wife Fern, who
I fi will continue as secretary to
the Dean of Admissions and Records, were honored
at a retirement dinner on January 29.
Barnes ends term to take corporate
planning position with local firm
John H. Barnes, Vice-President for Business Affairs
at Covenant College since 1972, leaves that position in
early February. President Martin Essenburg simulta¬
neously announced that Mr. Barnes would accept a
position with Chattanooga's Provident Life Insurance
Company in its corporate planning division.
During his stay at the college, Barnes managed the
growing annual operating budget and watched as
overall college assets grew to $9 million. Average ac¬
tual expenditures varied from budgeted expenditures
by less than 2% for the eight years Barnes served at
Covenant. He and his wife Jeanette have four chil¬
dren.

Meet Hoeun and Voeun Sok. This husband and
wife team from Cambodia helped to put envelopes in
the recent President's Report Anniversary Issue. The
two had spent five years in a refugee camp in Thailand
before coming to America in late November, 1979.
