The Boston Rescue Mission is an urban facility that serves the homeless population by providing transitional shelter, food,
training and assistance for transforming the lives of their clients. They have been working in the city since 1899 and own
a six-story historic building near Downtown Crossing. This project involved renovation of aging infrastructure including mechanical, electrical, life safety, windows and bathroom facilities. The original character of the storefront level of
the facade was restored by removing a modern treatment from 1951 (above center) and re-exposing the historic cast iron
columns (above right). The building was also made accessible for disabled homeless persons through the provision of an
interior entrance ramp at street level.
