GENERAL BENEFITS OF ELKA SUSPENSION PRODUCTS
IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND CONSISTENCY
When riders upgrade to Elka Suspension shock absorbers, they experience more performance and
adjustability than with OEM suspension. Elka Suspension shock absorbers also provide a more consistent
damping action over long or aggressive rides. With a better handling machine and the knowledge that
the shocks can withstand more, riders are able to gain confidence and improve their riding abilities.
Racers can also improve their lap times by suffering from less fatigue, getting more traction and
carrying more speed through obstacles and rough terrain.
OPTIMIZED GEOMETRY AND MORE ADJUSTABILITY
A less obvious benefit of Elka Suspension products is that they are specifically designed to optimize the
vehicle’s geometry in conjunction with other aftermarket components installed according to the type of
riding and terrain. Our engineers work closely with other aftermarket manufacturers to provide riders with
maximum performance and to ensure bolt-on compatibility. Our products are also offered with many
adjustment options that allow riders to precisely fine-tune the suspension to their needs and personal
preferences as well as to adapt to budgetary limitations.
PERFORMANCE BENEFITS:
HANDLING IMPROVEMENTS:
• More wheel travel than OEM suspension
• Reduced body roll when cornering
• Increased traction and plushness
• Better protection against bottoming-out
• Reduced rider fatigue and headshake
• Less front-end diving when braking
• Broader range of more effective adjustments
• Less rear-end squatting under acceleration
• Less stiction and more consistent damping action
• Improved control over whoops and obstacles
RACERS AND WEEKEND WARRIORS NEED TO UPGRADE TO AFTERMARKET SUSPENSION TO ADDRESS ISSUES THAT ARE SPECIFIC TO THEIR RIDING STYLE,
SUCH AS BODY ROLL WHEN CORNERING, BOTTOMING-OUT ON JUMPS AND MAJOR IMPACTS, OR TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE OVER WHOOPS SECTIONS.
4
GENERAL BENEFITS OF ELKA SUSPENSION PRODUCTS
IMPROVED COMFORT
While some are looking to improve the performance of their vehicle, the vast majority of riders considering
a suspension upgrade are seeking a more comfortable ride. This important aspect of the suspension is very
subjective and can vary a lot depending on experience, riding style, the type of terrain and, mostly, personal
preferences. At Elka Suspension, we take all these factors into account when custom-building our shock
absorbers – something that the vehicle’s manufacturer simply can’t do. Elka Suspension, products are
designed and built to enhance the riding experience by providing the features and handling characteristics
that riders really want and need.
DURABLE PRODUCTS THAT CAN BE SERVICED
All Elka Suspension products are crafted from the finest materials and hand-assembled to tight tolerances,
thus ensuring high-quality products that can withstand much more abuse than OEM suspension ever could.
Our shock absorbers can be completely rebuilt, and given regular maintenance and servicing, riders should
benefit from their investment for years to come.
ADJUSTMENTS THAT PROVIDE MORE VERSATILITY:
• Riders can adapt to varying types of terrain
and riding conditions
• Racers can fine-tune their suspension for each
racetrack thanks to the wide range of adjustments
• Riders benefit from a smooth ride even when
charging or for two-up riding
• Riders can make adjustments according
to their mood (smooth or aggressive)
• Suspension can be adapted for young riders
as they progress and improve their riding skills
• Most of our products can be upgraded
TO KEEP THE OVERALL PRICE OF THEIR VEHICLES COMPETITIVE, MANUFACTURERS ARE FORCED TO MAKE SOME COMPROMISES ON SUSPENSION COMPONENTS.
SINCE THEY DON’T KNOW HOW THE VEHICLE IS GOING TO BE USED, THE OEM SHOCK ABSORBERS ARE DESIGNED TO SUIT THE MOST BASIC NEEDS OF THE AVERAGE-SIZED RIDER.

THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND OUR PRODUCTS
ENGINEERING AND IN-HOUSE RAPID PROTOTYPING
When a vehicle manufacturer introduces a new model, we bring a unit into our factory so that our R&D
engineers and technicians can take multiple measurements to create a computer model. Then, they take
a test ride with the vehicle to assess the performance of the OEM suspension and see where they can
improve on it. After designing compatible products that provide the desired improvements, they use
in-house rapid prototyping to quickly assess compatibility. After all required modifications are made
to the design, we are then able to generate the first prototypes that will be used for testing.
At Elka Suspension, this whole process happens in a short time frame: that’s why we are able to quickly
introduce several products for new models as the manufacturers unveil their vehicles on the market.
PURPOSE-DRIVEN NEW TECHNOLOGIES
Combining input from our pro riders and customers with objective data collected using our telemetric
data acquisition systems, we develop new technologies that can address various issues encountered in
specific riding conditions. This approach has led to the introduction of many successful products, such as
the Dune Edition and the TRACK System®, and often enables us to improve existing products.
USING 3-D CAD SOFTWARE AND FINITE ELEMENT
ANALYSIS, OUR R&D ENGINEERS CAN :
• Quickly develop new designs and products
• Optimize the design and the strength of our products
through computer models and simulations
• Collaborate easily with other aftermarket products
manufacturers to ensure compatibility
• Generate data that can be used with our telemetric
data acquisition systems to speed up and facilitate
testing sessions with our professional riders
SUSPENSION TECHNOLOGY IS SIMILAR TO MAKING MOVIES: IT’S ALL SIMPLE AND FUN FROM THE END-USER’S POINT OF VIEW,
BUT THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE AND TECHNOLOGY INVOLVED BEHIND THE CAMERA THAT THE VIEWER WILL NEVER BE AWARE OF.
6
THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND OUR PRODUCTS
DYNAMOMETER TESTING
At Elka Suspension, dynamometer testing is used both for quality control and for precise analysis when
developing products. The precision provided by the dynamometer tremendously exceeds what the human
eye can detect and supplies objective data that can be compared and reproduced across production units.
This testing method has also proven more valuable and accurate than relying on subjective riders’ tests alone.
EXTENSIVE REAL-WORLD TESTING
The most innovative concepts and features aren’t worth much if they cannot translate into real advantages
for our customers. That’s why we also do extensive testing in real-world conditions with riders who have
diverse riding experience, ensuring that we not only satisfy the professional racers, but also meet the needs
and expectations of every customer profile. During these tests, the products are pushed to their very limits,
far beyond what most of our customers would do. When you purchase Elka Suspension products,
you receive high-quality shock absorbers AND you benefit from the combined knowledge and experience
of many professional riders.

WHAT MAKES A CUSTOM SHOCK ABSORBER
ADJUSTMENT OPTIONS THAT YOU CHOOSE
Get the perfect balance between the performance level you seek and the tunability you need by choosing
your adjustment options. Not everyone likes to mess around with knobs, and some riders will prefer a
set-up that is easier to use, because there’s less chance it will get out of tune. Choosing your options also
allows you to stay on budget, as that’s the main variable affecting the price.
OPTIMIZED SET-UP FOR YOUR VEHICLE MODEL
Each vehicle has its own geometry with its inherent strengths and weaknesses. By using a multiple-rate
spring set-up and custom dimensions for our shock absorbers, our engineers are able to optimize certain
aspects of the geometry that affect the handling attributes. This can be used to address problems such as
body roll and excessive weight transfers upon braking or hard acceleration. It also allows for more wheel
travel on several vehicles’ geometry.
CUSTOM VALVING FOR YOUR RIDING TYPE
The valving is the combination of the piston and shims that controls the flow of the oil inside the shock.
At Elka Suspension, we customize the valving so that the hydraulic resistance is optimal for each type
of riding. For example, a rider doing a lot of jumping, such as in MX racing, will need more resistance
in high speeds to prevent bottoming-out on landings. On the other hand, a recreational rider who does
mostly woods riding over rough terrain will require less resistance in high speeds to allow the wheels
to soak up the obstacles.
CUSTOM SPRING RATE FOR YOUR WEIGHT
Unlike mass-production shock absorbers bought off the shelf, Elka Suspension comes equipped with
the exact spring rate to suit your weight. There’s no need to guess which spring to purchase separately.
Finally, we use proprietary springs made from high-tensile steel and keep a huge inventory of rates that
can cover every rider weighing from 75 to 500 lb.
GET THE MOST VALUE OUT OF YOUR INVESTMENT BY CHOOSING CUSTOM-BUILT SUSPENSION.

CRAFTSMANSHIP & QUALITY STANDARD FEATURES
QUALITY IS CONTROLLED AT EVERY STEP OF PRODUCTION
From the raw materials to final shipments, our products must go through several quality controls.
A finished product will never leave the factory if it doesn’t meet our high standards of quality.
Every unit is rigorously tested on a dynamometer to ensure maximum quality, performance and
durability at a very precise level before it is marked with a serial number and sent out to a customer.
SMALL DETAILS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
The design of all Elka Suspension products includes several features that have been incorporated over
years of improvements and testing. Those small features are often overlooked, mainly because riders never
notice them when everything is working fine. For example, we use the appropriate thread-locking fluid
at several steps of the assembly process to prevent loosening from vibration and extended use. Also, a
proprietary special bleeding and calibration process
ensures that there are no microscopic air bubbles
inside the oil that could expand when heated and
decrease the overall performance of the product.
INTERNAL BLOW-OFF VALVE
Most occurrences of defective shock absorbers are
caused by the buildup of high-pressure due to extreme
internal temperatures or very harsh impacts.
All Elka Suspension, shock absorbers feature an internal
blow-off valve that prevents a pressure overload from
damaging vital internal components and seals.
OUR QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED TECHNICIANS ASSEMBLE EACH UNIT BY HAND TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF QUALITY.
10
CRAFTSMANSHIP & QUALITY STANDARD FEATURES
HIGHEST QUALITY MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS
All aluminum parts are CNC-machined from the finest materials and then anodized to provide a beautiful
long-lasting finish. Our parts also undergo a heat and anti-friction treatment – processes essential to the
production of a high-performance shock absorber. All o-rings, seals and wearbands have been carefully
selected to provide the perfect balance of durability and reduced friction. The springs, bottom-out bumpers
and many other components we use are manufactured exclusively for Elka Suspension so that they meet
our standards of quality and performance.
HAND-ASSEMBLED TO THE TIGHTEST TOLERANCES
We put the same care and attention into every single unit we produce. Our experienced technicians handbuild each product, taking into account all the factors specific to each custom order. Using proprietary tools,
they assemble the components to very tight tolerances in a controlled environment, so no impurities can get
inside the shock absorbers. Our production process for custom-built products is remarkably quick because
we have developed a manufacturing process unique to Elka Suspension.
UNLIKE MASS-PRODUCED UNITS, CUSTOM-BUILT PRODUCTS ENSURE A CONSISTENT QUALITY LEVEL, THANKS TO THE SPECIAL ATTENTION THAT IS GIVEN EACH INDIVIDUAL UNIT.

11
INTERNAL STANDARD FEATURES
MUCH MORE THAN YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE
Inside each Elka Suspension shock absorber lay many technical features that contribute to its quality,
performance and reliability. Just as a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, every component of a
shock absorber must match the same level of quality. That’s why we use only the finest materials and most
reliable parts when fabricating our products, and why we hand-assemble them to the tightest tolerances.
WHAT’S INSIDE OUR SHOCK ABSORBERS:
• CNC-machined, aeronautical grade anodized billet aluminum parts and adjustment knobs
• High-quality triple-seal heads, o-rings and wearbands that reduce friction and heat for longer shock life
• A checkball that isolates the compression circuit from the rebound circuit,
so they don’t interfere with each other
• A blow-off valve that prevents internal damage to the shock absorber from peak forces
• Needle-type adjusters for precise incremental adjustment
• High-volume reservoirs with a floating piston that separates the oil from the compressed nitrogen gas
• Hard-anodized main piston combined with high-quality shims for greater longevity

13
CUSTOMIZED SPRING SET-UPS STANDARD FEATURES
ALREADY SPRUNG FOR YOUR WEIGHT AND VEHICLE
Most of our shock absorbers use multi-spring set-ups that are adapted for each vehicle’s geometry.
A combination of many factors, such as the length and strength of the springs and the design of the
crossover spring spacers, can be altered to precisely achieve the desired progression of the spring rate
throughout the stroke. By controlling this progression, our engineers can highlight some aspects of the
handling or reduce undesirable aspects inherent to the design of the vehicle. That’s why our suspension
can feel very plush without bottoming out and while reducing body roll and excessive weight transfers.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
With Elka Suspension, you get the exact spring configuration that is optimal for your vehicle’s geometry,
your weight (including additional payload) and riding type. Racers and sports riders can get a responsive
ride without bottoming out, and recreational riders can enjoy a comfortable ride with improved handling.
BENEFITS FOR THE RIDER
• No need to figure out the required spring configuration
• No need to purchase springs separately
• Spring set-up is tuned for the vehicle’s geometry
• Spring rate is adapted to the rider’s weight
HELPS REDUCE BODY ROLL AND EXCESSIVE
WEIGHT TRANSFERS
Most manufacturers supply very soft spring rates on
their vehicles to provide a more comfortable ride, often
resulting in excessive weight transfers and body roll.
Our progressive multi-spring configurations can provide
a comfortable ride without bottoming out, body roll
or excessive weight transfer by having a soft portion
of travel that becomes gradually stiffer deeper into
the wheel travel.
OUR MULTI-SPRING SET-UPS ARE SPECIFICALLY TUNED TO VARY THE SPRING RATE SMOOTHLY THROUGHOUT THE STROKE TO OPTIMIZE EACH VEHICLE’S GEOMETRY.
14
CUSTOMIZED VALVING STANDARD FEATURES
THE PROPER DAMPING FOR YOUR RIDING TYPE
The valving is the combination of a piston and an assortment of shims stacked over the piston that is
controlling the oil flow inside the shock absorber. By altering the diameter and thickness and the shims,
we can customize the hydraulic resistance according to the velocity at which the oil flows through the
piston. Each riding type or racing discipline has its own requirements in terms of hydraulic resistance.
For example, a racer on a motocross track will require more resistance in high-speed compression to
prevent bottoming out on big jumps, but a desert rider will need less resistance in high-speed to allow the
wheels to soak up the obstacles. With Elka Suspension, you get the customized valving that will suit your needs.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
By offering you customized valving, Elka Suspension is able to provide you the exact feeling you are looking
for from your suspension for your riding type. Even without adjustment options, you’ll still get a suspension
that is tuned for you. For products with compression and rebound adjustment, we can provide even more
usable range of adjustment within your requirements.
BENEFITS FOR THE RIDER
• Optimal absorption for the type of riding
• Appropriate rebound speed for the spring rate
• More range of adjustment
• More precise fine-tuning
CUSTOM VALVING ALLOWS US TO PROVIDE YOU THE WIDEST USABLE RANGE OF ADJUSTMENT FOR YOUR SPECIFIC TYPE OF RIDING.

PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT STANDARD FEATURES
ADJUSTABLE RIDE HEIGHT AND PRELOAD
All our shock absorbers come standard with a threaded preload adjustment that allows you to fine-tune the
initial force applied on the springs. This adjustment is required to set up the ride height (ground or chassis
clearance) and to lower or raise the vehicle. You can easily adjust the preload by turning the red anodized
ring located on top of the springs using the provided tool. A locking set-screw (3 mm Allen key provided)
tightly secures the ring to prevent it from coming out of adjustment when riding. Although the preload
adjustment procedure is easier to achieve when the vehicle is lifted on a stand, it can also be done on the trail.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
Our customized spring rates and set-ups combined with the preload adjustment provide the optimal spring
rate and ride height for your riding style and type of terrain while allowing you to adapt to various situations
or to suit your personal preferences. You can make your vehicle higher or lower as you like while still getting
the benefits from a progressive suspension and smooth absorption.
BENEFITS FOR THE RIDER
• Allows you to lower or raise the vehicle
• Allows you to adjust your ride height for optimal
handling
• Allows you to precisely balance the weight distribution
across the front and rear wheels
• Enables more precise fine-tuning of the spring rate
OFTEN OVERLOOKED, THE PRELOAD IS THE FIRST ADJUSTMENT YOU’LL USE TO SET YOUR VEHICLE AT THE PROPER RIDE HEIGHT AND TO BALANCE THE FRONT AND REAR WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION.
16
REBOUND ADJUSTMENT STANDARD FEATURES
KEEPS THE WHEELS ON THE GROUND
The rebound adjustment controls the speed at which the shock absorbers return to their fully extended
position after being compressed from an impact. Although the rebound valving is customized for your riding
type, sometimes you might need to further adjust the rebound. Since not all riding conditions or tracks are
the same, the rider will want to adapt the rebound damping to match them. By adjusting the rebound
properly, the wheels can stay on the ground as much as possible to get maximum traction and reduce the
bucking effect of the spring pressure pushing back after an impact. Elka Suspension offers two types of
rebound adjusters (depending on vehicle model): an easy to use twisting knob and a compact adjuster that
can be set with a flat screwdriver, both of which have detented clicks.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
Riders looking for more versatile suspension will greatly benefit from the rebound adjustment as it allows
optimal performance, comfort and traction by helping to keep the wheels on the ground. Racers, on the
other hand, really need this adjustment to be able to adapt to different tracks.
BENEFITS FOR THE RIDER
• Provides maximum traction for all track conditions
• Reduces the bouncing effect over undulations
or whoops
• Prevents the rider from being catapulted from the
vehicle over whoops and when landing big jumps
• Is a required adjustment for slowing down the rebound
after increasing the preload when charging heavy loads
THE REBOUND ADJUSTMENT IS A REQUIRED FEATURE FOR THOSE WHO RIDE ON VARIED KINDS OF TERRAIN OR IN DIVERSE CONDITIONS OR WHO OFTEN CARRY ADDITIONAL PAYLOADS.

17
COMPRESSION ADJUSTMENT STANDARD FEATURES
FINE-TUNE THE DAMPING RESISTANCE
On top of the customized valving, the compression adjustment can provide further fine-tuning of the
hydraulic damping by controlling an additional restriction of the oil flow. Our needle-type compression
adjuster operates on a dedicated oil passage in the shock’s head, allowing very precise incremental adjustments to be made. A checkball prevents the compression adjustments to affect the rebound, thus making
adjustments easier to dial in. Adjustments of the compression are quick, and easily made by turning a
conveniently located knob that has positive detented clicks.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
The compression adjustment allows riders to fine-tune the suspension to their personal preference and
make it softer or stiffer by simply turning a knob. This can be done quickly and easily on the side of the trail
or track to adapt to various riding situations or track conditions. The compression adjustment is highly
beneficial for riders who need more versatility from their shock absorbers.
BENEFITS FOR THE RIDER
• Makes the suspension softer or stiffer on the fly
• Lets the rider adapt to different conditions or
racetracks
• Does not affect the rebound
• Helps reduce bottoming-out when needed
PREVENT BOTTOMING-OUT
To benefit from a smooth ride and plush suspension over
small obstacles like roots, rocks or choppy terrain, the
rider might want to run a softer suspension setting that
could render the vehicle more prone to bottoming out.
The combination or appropriate customized valving and
compression adjustment can help prevent this.
THE COMPRESSION ADJUSTMENT ALLOWS YOU TO MAKE THE SUSPENSION SOFTER OR STIFFER BY THE SIMPLE TWIST OF A KNOB.
18
ELITE COMPRESSION ADJUSTMENT STANDARD FEATURES
HIGH- AND LOW-SPEED COMPRESSION ADJUSTMENT
Elka Suspension’s Elite compression adjustment is an internal cartridge with two distinct circuits that
control the hydraulic resistance for both high-velocity and low-velocity oil displacement. This enables very
advanced fine-tuning for different types of impacts that would otherwise require the rider to make a
compromise between a more comfortable softer suspension and a high-performance harder suspension.
With our Elite compression adjustment, the rider can have the suspension set to react differently for
high-speed situations and low-speed situations at the same time. Learning and understanding how to
dial-in the Elite compression adjustment might require a little time and effort, but it will reward the rider
with a suspension that work wonders over any kind of terrain and obstacles.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
With the Elite compression adjustment, the rider can fine-tune the shock absorbers to react differently for
riding situations that would otherwise require a compromise to be made between opposed optimal settings.
Elite compression adjustment is for riders who demand the highest performance and adjustability.

DUNE EDITION SERIES
SAND RIDING IN THE DUNES IS A DIFFERENT THRILL THAT REQUIRES A RE-ENGINEERED TYPE OF SUSPENSION TO PROVIDE AMAZING TRACTION AND COMFORT OVER RIPPLES AND TIRE TRACKS.
28
DUNE EDITION SERIES
Most dune riders will never race their quad or subject it to the kind of punishment a full-fledged racing ATV has to endure. However, there are times stock
suspension just won’t make it through the day without fading out and exhausting the rider. When you go for the fun in the dunes, you want your shocks
to actually “absorb” the vibrations and hits all day long. We developed the Dune Edition with weekend warriors in mind. Now you can ride hard all day long
and never feel worn out. Dune riding is very different from trail or track riding. The soft sand surface and hot conditions normally found affect the suspension
and require a different response from your shock absorbers. Our dune-specific spring set-up without the Self-Sagging Device maintains the quad slightly higher
in its travel to prevent sinking in the soft sand. It also provides more up travel to your wheels. Our custom-built Dune Edition shock absorbers were specifically
engineered for sand riding with only one goal in mind: making dune riding more enjoyable.
WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THE DUNE EDITION?
LOW-SPEED
HIGH-SPEED
HYDRAULIC RESISTANCE
The stock suspension on most ATVs is designed for moderate trail riding:
it has very soft damping in low-speed compression for greater comfort and
harder high-speed damping to prevent bottoming out. This configuration is not
appropriate for dune riding, where most of the workload for the suspension
comes from high-speed compression vibrations caused by multiple tire tracks
in the sand. The dune-specific valving in our Dune Edition shock absorbers
takes a different approach. It provides more low-speed compression resistance,
which eliminates excessive diving and body roll in sharp turns when carving the
dunes, and prevents bottoming out on g-outs during transitions between dunes
and when jumping. The valving provides softer damping in high-speed
compression so that the suspension is more active over choppy terrain
and sand grooves, making the ride more comfortable.

MOTORCYCLES SERIES
The 3-Way Series shock absorbers provide maximum performance and adjustability to meet the demanding needs of today’s racers and track day riders.
Elka Suspension hand-builds shocks, ensuring that each unit is valved and sprung specifically for bike model, rider weight, linkage ratio and type of track.
The 3-Way units feature high- and low-speed compression adjustability to provide squat and traction control during cornering and acceleration,
keeping the contact patch of the tire on the track while allowing smooth absorption of bumps and obstacles. In short, it keeps you glued to the track.
The 2-Way Series shock absorbers are built to the same exacting standards as the 3-Way Series, and feature a single rebound adjustment, as well as
compression, overall length and spring preload adjustments common to both models
These are not an “off-the-shelf shock” – they are custom-built and sprung specifically for you to get the maximum performance for your specific personal use.

40
BMW MOTORCYCLES SERIES
Our custom-built shock absorbers for BMW motorcycles greatly enhance the performance and comfort for all riding conditions while
offering more versatility. They provide the hydraulic compression (optional high- and low-speed) and rebound damping adjustability at
the front and rear that stock suspension lacks, thus allowing you to fine-tune the ride for road or off-road use. A preload adjustment
(optional hydraulic adjuster) also allows you to adjust ride height for single or two-up riding, with or without baggage. A rider-specific,
dual-rate spring set-up provides the plushness and progression needed to improve the stock suspension on BMW Enduro motorcycles,
reducing excessive front and back weight transfer (diving and squatting) under acceleration and braking, bottoming out on harsh
impacts and front-end pushing when cornering. The external reservoirs and high-quality internal components also ensure consistent
damping over epic rides and for many miles to come. Widen your horizons with Elka Suspension’s custom-built shock absorbers
and get the most out of your BMW motorcycle. There will never again be a road too long or a trail too far.

CHOOSING YOUR SUSPENSION
STEP 1: DETERMINE YOUR NEEDS
BEFORE YOU BUY
When you are shopping for a shock absorber upgrade, you need to begin by determining your specific
needs. Ask yourself questions like “Where will I ride? What performance and comfort levels am I looking
for? What kind of terrain will I ride? What adjustment options do I need?” Answers to these simple questions
will guide your sales representative toward the perfect set-up for you.
COMMON MISTAKES RIDERS MAKE WHEN BUYING SHOCK ABSORBERS:
• Over- or underestimating their riding level
• Looking for more or fewer adjustment options than they really need
• Shopping for bargains when they expect high-level performance and comfort
• Shopping according to advice given by others who have different riding abilities
• Buying something they have tried on a friend’s vehicle that is built differently
• Not taking the time to go over the recommended installation procedures
• Looking only for something to impress other riders
• Buying according to plans they have made, but that may never become reality
• Riding on a different type of terrain than what they bought the set-up for
• Buying used shock absorbers and trying to modify them to fit their vehicle
Will you use your new shock absorbers for racing or recreational use? This first answer will point you
toward the right Elka Suspension series. Our racing shocks will provide maximum performance, but will
give up a little on comfort. If you’re after a first-place finish, you won’t need the same set-up as a trail rider
on an epic six-hour ride. This second rider will prefer a smoother ride to a five-second-per-lap advantage,
because he is looking to have fun more than to experience raw performance.
DETERMINING YOUR NEEDS: THAT’S THE KEY
TO THE PERFECT SUSPENSION SET-UP.
When you call Elka Suspension, one of our sales representatives will go over a few questions with you
to make sure that he understands your true needs. Although our sales representatives know a lot about
suspension, they do rely on your answers. This is why it is so important for you to be honest with the sales
representative and with yourself. It’s the only way to ensure you get the performance, comfort and value
you expect from your investment.
CHOOSING IN FUNCTION OF YOUR NEEDS IS THE BEST WAY TO ENSURE THAT YOU WILL BE FULLY SATISFIED WITH YOUR PURCHASE.
58
CHOOSING YOUR SUSPENSION
STEP 2: CHOOSE A GEOMETRY
CHOOSE BETWEEN STANDARD OR LONG-TRAVEL
There are two types of geometry available for sports and racing ATVs: standard travel and long-travel.
A geometry with standard travel will use the same mounting points and shock absorber dimensions as the
OEM suspension. Using standard geometry, we are usually able to provide more wheel travel by having
more usable stroke on the shock absorber. What is called a long-travel geometry in the industry is usually
using a longer shock absorber with even more stroke and oil displacement. Be aware that a long-travel
geometry might not always provide more wheel travel than a standard geometry with specifically designed
shock absorbers. The main performance advantages of long-travel over standard geometry are better
damping action and easier adjustments and fine-tuning procedures.
SELECT THE APPROPRIATE WIDTH AND LENGTH
Depending on the type of riding you do, you might want to have a wider stance at the front and/or a longer
wheelbase using extended aftermarket a-arms and swingarms. Usually, MX racers and aggressive riders
will be looking for a wider stance (+1 in. or +2 in.) and a standard-length swingarm to obtain better traction
and make cornering more efficient. On the other hand, cross-country racers and woods riders will usually
stick to standard-width a-arms for better maneuverability in tighter trails and through the trees. There are
other special needs according to each discipline. For example, desert racing requires a longer wheelbase
for increased high-speed stability whereas flat track racing requires a lowered suspension.
CHOOSE A BRAND OR MANUFACTURER
Many different manufacturers offer aftermarket a-arms and swingarms for almost any given vehicle.
Our engineers work closely with them to make sure that we offer compatible products that are optimized
for their geometry. When shopping around for aftermarket suspension products, we recommend that
you always call us to verify if we cover them before you make your purchase. This call could save you
a lot of extra charges or additional delays as well as ensure that you don’t run into any problems with fit.
Our suspension specialists are always available to help you out by recommending products that will
suit your personal needs.
REMEMBER THAT ANY PERFORMANCE UPGRADE ON YOUR VEHICLE WON’T BE FULLY EFFICIENT UNLESS THE POWER CAN BE PUT TO THE GROUND.
www.elkasuspension.com
59
CHOOSING YOUR SUSPENSION
STEP 3: CHOOSE YOUR ADJUSTMENTS & OPTIONS
Most people think that more adjustability is always better. This is true for the most part, but only if you know how to use this adjustability properly and are willing to
fine-tune your suspension when you need to. Some riders, on the other hand, feel they don’t need many adjustment options because either they don’t race or they
almost always ride around the same places. It’s true that racers will benefit greatly from more adjustment options because they need to adapt their suspension to
different racetracks and ever-changing racing conditions. However, intermediate-level racers might not always need the latest technological gizmo as they probably
won’t be able to push enough to use it to its fullest potential. Recreational riders typically use their vehicle in more varied conditions than racers. They will have fun
on a track one day and head for the woods the next. The more versatility you expect, the more adjustment options you will need to fully enjoy your ride.
WITH OR WITHOUT EXTERNAL RESERVOIRS ?
Having external reservoirs will provide a more consistent damping over extended use by allowing more oil
displacement and better cooling. You can choose between models with or without reservoirs for most
vehicle models. The models without reservoirs will usually be less expensive than those with reservoirs,
but you won’t be able to get a compression adjustment (or Elite adjustment) unless you have a reservoir.
COMPRESSION AND REBOUND ADJUSTMENTS
The rebound adjustment is optional on most models, but is highly recommended at the rear for sports-utility
ATVs to allow you to slow the rebound in order to avoid the bouncing effect when you increase the preload
after adding additional payload. The rebound adjustment is also very useful for riders who often ride on
different types of terrain. The compression adjustment is another option that will provide more versatility
by allowing the rider to quickly switch from a softer suspension to a stiffer suspension (or vice versa) when
the riding conditions change. Most racers will choose to have both compression and rebound adjustments
so that they get the most performance by adapting their suspension for each racetrack.
ELITE COMPRESSION ADJUSTMENT
The Elite compression adjustment will provide experienced riders even more adjustability so that
they won’t need to make any compromise when adjusting the suspension for various types of terrain
or for different track conditions. Elite compression adjustment is for riders who demand the highest
performance and adjustability.
KEEP IN MIND THAT YOUR PERFORMANCE NEEDS COULD BE COMPROMISED WITHOUT THE PROPER ADJUSTMENT.

the type of valving we will use and the level of adjustment we will recommend.

YOUR VEHICLE MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR
Since our products are custom-built and optimized for each vehicle, we need to know the exact make,
model and year so that we can provide you the exact set-up without any chance of interference or
problems with fit. We cover almost all models and years for most vehicle types. It’s also possible to offer
you custom development for any vehicle model that we don’t cover, assuming that you are able to provide
us with the appropriate measurements and dimensions and that you are willing to wait a little longer.
Otherwise, production can begin as soon as your order is placed with our sales representatives.
YOUR ADJUSTMENT OPTIONS
Finally, you can choose from several adjustment options, such as preload only, preload and rebound,
preload and compression, preload with compression and rebound or preload with Elite compression and
rebound. Be aware that all options might not be available for your vehicle model or year. Our representative
will start by making recommendations for the best set-up available for your intended use. From there,
he’ll be able to discuss with you each option so that you make a wise decision with regard to your budget.
OUR SALES REPRESENTATIVE WILL GO OVER MANY QUESTIONS DURING YOUR CALL TO MAKE SURE THEY DIRECT YOU TOWARDS THE APPROPRIATE SET-UP FOR YOUR NEEDS.
