Welcome to the
“Road of Innovation”
Dear Readers,
Ammann has successfully held its ground on
the world’s markets for 144 years and stands
for the power of innovation and entrepreneurship. We listen intently and carefully to
the wants and needs of our customers and
channel them into the development of market-driven machine and plant solutions with
superior customer benefit, maximum productivity and the greatest possible availability and
reliability. The application of state-of-the-art
process technology is just as important to the
preservation of resources as are the results
from our own worldwide network of research
and development activities. Our well-developed global network of subsidiaries, sales
partners and local service centres in all market
regions means we are always at your side and
close to hand.
We shall be showcasing our power of innovation at the Bauma 2013 in Munich. It is
my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of all
Ammann employees to the “Road of Innovation” at the Ammann stand. We will present
the latest developments to Ammann's broad
product range on 4000 m2. The focus lies on
the market launch of the latest engine technology across the entire range of heavy rideon rollers, as well as completely new mixing plant concepts for high proportions of
reclaimed asphalt or highly mobile applications. Come and see the quality of these and
many other innovations form the house of
Ammann for yourself!
Ammann has always stood for independence,
longevity and credibility and, as is befitting
the tradition of the Swiss family-owned business, continuity. As a representative of the
6th generation of the entrepreneurial family appointed to manage the Ammann Group
at the beginning of 2013, I will continue to
uphold these values. “Productivity Partnership
for a Lifetime” is our unshakeable motto that
motivates us anew every day to safeguard
and contribute towards your efficiency and
long-term success with our products. Thank
you for placing your trust and confidence in
our partnership. I look forward to meeting

Ammann continues to open up new markets as it pursues its transformation to a global provider of
road construction equipment and machinery. The first two asphalt mixing plants for Bangladesh have
recently been sold. Reason enough to point up the organisational and cultural challenges in the “on
site” category of our customer magazine. The Ammann sales team reports on its experiences and
impressions.

Both JustBlack plants will initially work on the airport project. One of them will later replace an ageing mixing plant located in the north of Bangladesh.
The initial contact took the form of a short
e-mail with little content, as is so often the
case: we were to provide a quote for a plant
with a capacity of 160 t/h – that was all the
information we had to start with. Receiving a query from Bangladesh is not an every-
day occurrence and requires a detailed knowledge of geography from central Europeans.
Bangladesh (former East Pakistan) lies to the
east of India and has a border with Myanmar.
The Himalayas reach to the sky in the north,
whilst the south touches the Bay of Bengal.
Another kind of asphalt mixing plant. The aggregate is heated up over an open fire and then mixed with
bitumen. The transport trays are designed specifically to fit on the transport surfaces of rickshaws.
The area is basically one big swamp consisting virtually exclusively of the sand and rocks
washed down from the Himalayas; frequent
and heavy flooding is often experienced during the monsoon period.
A glance at the country’s facts and figures
reveals some impressive information. Bangladesh is approximately four times the size
of Switzerland but has around 20 times as
many inhabitants, namely 160 million. Economic growth has been constant at 5 % over
the past six years. Improvements to the country’s infrastructure play a major role in Bangladesh. The road network, for instance, measures some 223,000 kilometres, of which to
date only 16 % (35,000 kilometres) have been
paved.
Other countries, other roads
We decide to submit a quote for an Ammann
JustBlack 160 asphalt mixing plant adapted
specifically for this area of the market. A few
enquiries sent to the customer quickly make
it clear that he is serious and so we arrange
to meet on site. In January 2012, we arrive
at night in Dhaka and are picked up from the
airport. The hotel is only 10 kilometres away
from the airport, yet it takes nearly two hours
to get there by car. The average traffic speed

port alongside the small, motorised tricycles
known as tuktuks. These forms of transport
are not recommended for business travel,
although the tuktuks don’t actually take much
longer to reach their destination. Whilst the
main roads are equipped with traffic lights,
their signals are perceived more as well-meant
recommendations. Crossings are more effectively controlled by traffic police who underscore the traffic light’s signal by cordoning
off the road with a length of rope to stop the
flow of traffic.
is correspondingly low, but it still takes a good
deal of attention and persistence to navigate
our way through it.
The main roads of Dhaka are paved and
belong to motorised traffic, but as soon as
we turn off the main road into a side street
the asphalt surface suddenly disappears and
we are swimming in a sea of rickshaws. Rickshaws are the most important form of trans-
Road construction, Coca-Cola and Igloo
The first project meeting with customer Abdul
Monem Ltd (AML) takes place the next day.
The company is one of the largest construction companies in Bangladesh and has a very
diversified business model: in addition to his
construction business, Abdul Monem is also
general importer for Coca-Cola and Igloo ice
cream. AML is a family-owned company, and
a review of the company’s website reveals a
number of similarities with Ammann. In this
particular case, AML has received the contract to refurbish the runway at the capital
city’s airport in Dhaka. The paving was last
renewed in 1996 and has aged accordingly over the years due to heavy use. The time
restrictions placed on the construction period
and the high quality demanded of the asphalt
paving are typical of airport runway projects.
As it is the airport’s only runway, air traffic
can only be interrupted for a few hours during the night. AML cannot start work until 11
p.m. and has to clear the runway at 5 a.m. to
allow flight operations to resume. It is therefore obvious how important a reliable asphalt
mix production is under the circumstances.
Trusting in people and dykes
Although the customer’s premises are not far
from the hotel, getting there still takes a lot
of time. The usual security checks take place
at reception. Meetings over here also take a
somewhat different approach. One is suddenly confronted by a large number of people with responsibility, and each of them
wants the answer or certainty that will affect
his area.
The customer seems confident and asks us
to inspect one of his existing plants and to
advise him on upgrading. The next day we
board a flight with a small local airline and fly
up to the north of Bangladesh. It is clearly visible from above how well the people have
adapted to the country. The roads and pathways criss-cross the countryside like a net-

work of nerves built on dykes of between
three and five metres in height. Villages are
also constructed on man-made hills. The area
between them consists primarily of paddy
fields and swampland. All traffic movement
takes place exclusively on these raised roads,
streets and pathways. Our journey to the
plant continues in an all-terrain vehicle, and
it is soon clear that it is in fact life itself that
takes place on these raised routes. Travelling,
walking, trading, drying rice, sitting and resting, cycling – everything and everyone is on
the road. But what that also means is that of
the two lanes, there is actually only one running down the middle that can be used by

of the base material.
traffic. And it is shared by counter-traffic,
bicycles, rickshaws, pedestrians and animals.
Serious doubt
An inspection of the 50 year old plant that
was purchased second-hand in the USA 20
years ago invokes mixed feelings of disillusionment and amazement. It is fascinating to
see how local craftsmen manage to keep the
patchwork of iron and steel alive. One could
be forgiven for claiming that the plant consisted more of weld seams than of sheet steel.
We begin to feel some serious doubt as to
whether a retrofit project is the way ahead in
this case. It is starting to get dark and so we
make the return journey, albeit not by plane.
We travel the last 350 kilometres by train –
an 11-hour journey. Back in Europe, we turn
our attention to the customer’s wants and
needs. We prepare quotes in consideration of
the insights we have gained and send them
to Bangladesh. A couple of weeks later we
are once again sitting opposite the customer’s same team, but this time we are joined by
the consultant to the airport authority, or the
“asphalt guru of Bangladesh”, to quote our
customer. The customer confides in us how
important it is to the project that we convince the consultant of our plant technology.
So, in addition to trying to sell an asphalt mix-
ing plant, we take the consultant on board,
explain the plant technology to him and
accommodate his wishes and recommendations. Instead of upgrading the old plant and
purchasing one new plant, we recommend
AML should consider buying two new but
slightly smaller plants. Both should initially be
used for the airport project. One of the plants
would then replace the ancient used plant in
the north of the country.
Shoeless before the patron
Now we just have to be patient. We take a
seat in the meeting room and wait. Every now
and then a friendly employee pops in and
asks whether we would like another Coke or
ice cream. Waiting proves to be worthwhile:
we are granted access to the patron. We take
off our shoes and, full of deference, enter his
office. The owner is around 80 years of age
and makes a friendly and somehow shrewd
impression. He tells us that he thinks highly of
European mechanical engineering and is quality conscious. The price, however, is a point of
discussion. He is very serious but, after long
negotiations, he is willing to shake on it. He
does not want to hear about a second plant.
Nonetheless: the first Ammann plant has been
sold to Bangladesh! Two months later, the
customer contacts us again and asks wheth-

In many places the aggregate is gathered in the form of shingle extracted directly from river beds, which is then crushed and added to the asphalt production

er the option for a second plant still stands.
It would appear we were listened to. Once
again we travel to Bangladesh, spend half the
night in the meeting room with Coke and ice
cream, take off our shoes and speak with the
owner. AML purchases the second plant. Our
arguments were obviously convincing.
Mixing engineer for hire
In the meantime, both plants are located at the airport and deliver a reliable supply of asphalt every day. By the way, bitumen
in Bangladesh is not available in a hot, liquid form but is sold cold in barrels. Every barrel has to be cracked open and the bitumen
heated prior to use. All day long, one employee sits on the barrels and opens them with a
hammer and chisel to ensure a ready supply
of the bitumen required for the project.
During the commissioning phase, we are
asked by AML whether they could hire one
of our mixing engineers. We check briefly
with our colleagues in Shanghai and ascertain
that we can indeed rent a mixing engineer
to AML. We have got to know one another a little better in the meantime and quickly reach an agreement. Since then, one of
Ammann’s mixing engineers has monitored
the customer’s asphalt production process.
Ammann has yet another customer and partner in the world. Bangladesh is a completely
different world in comparison to Europe and
it is impressive to see how the people there
master their lives with such simple means.
Despite the challenges that face the coun-
try, its people are very obliging and friendly, always ready to offer visitors an open and
honest welcome.

Ammann at the Bauma 2013
A reliable partner with
the power to innovate and
global customer proximity
Ammann is utilising its innovative spirit and entrepreneurship to
position itself as a global provider of ecological, safe and practical products for road construction. The family-owned Swiss company is now in its 144th year and has been under the management of
the 6th generation since January 2013. The company is currently
investing in developing new markets and expanding sales and services in its core markets. This year will see Ammann present a number of new mixing plant concepts and a completely revised programme of compaction machines and asphalt pavers at the Bauma.
Ammann will present its extensive product
portfolio with many new developments in the
area of compaction machines, asphalt pavers and mixing plants at the Bauma 2013
from 15–21 April. The focus lies on the market launch of the Euro3B (Tier4) motorised
compaction machines in the field of heavy
ride-on rollers, as well as completely new
mixing plant concepts for high proportions
of reclaimed asphalt or highly mobile applications. The long-established company will
show its customers from around the world
a selection of these latest developments and
innovations across the product range along
the “Road of Innovation” at the 4000 m2
Ammann stand.
Despite persistent and economically challenging conditions, Ammann will continue to
expand its global market position and open
new markets. Ammann’s expansion activities last year included establishing subsidiaries in South Africa and Bulgaria, establishing
a proprietary assembly company with a sales
and service organisation in Brazil, and further
expanding its operations in south-east Asia.
Together with existing successful activities in
the core European market, the Middle East,
Russia and the CIS states, China and North
America, these latest expansions put Ammann
in even closer proximity to its customers.
Asphalt mixing plants for
every market demand
Ammann is focused on driving the further
development of process engineering and process technology to meet the ever-growing
demands from markets in various regions with
regard to the use of reclaimed asphalt, emission
reductions and plant mobility. Today, the world
market leader is the only manufacturer with the
plant technology to produce new asphalt from

100 % recycled asphalt. Ammann also offers
appropriate recycling upgrades for every specific
demand raised by customers and the markets.
This has resulted in completely new and innovative mixing plant concepts such as the Universal HRT (High Recycling Technology), a
plant concept presented by Ammann that
consistently aligns the entire asphalt production process with the maximum possible use
of reclaimed asphalt. Or the UniBatch range
that combines high flexibility, extendibility and
a large selection of variants with modularity, energy efficiency and reduced emission values. Ammann is also setting high standards
in the field of mobility with two new plant
types. The EasyBatch 140 range for batch
asphalt production and the Prime 140 for
continuous production processes both stand
for maximum compact mobility coupled with
the greatest possible output of 140 tonnes
per hour.
All of the Ammann plant ranges share
the same core concept: all components in
Ammann plants that have an influence on
the quality of asphalt production are proprietary developments manufactured at Ammann
facilities in Switzerland (core components)
and the downstream facilities in Germany, Italy, China and in future also Brazil. New
technological developments in the field of

range is compatible with all of Ammann’s recycling technologies and
is suitable for enclosing in housing. The modules are suitable for transportation on standard vehicles thanks to standardised container dimensions, which in turn enables short delivery times and quick assembly on
site.
Prime 140 is the highly mobile version of Ammann's very successful
continuous asphalt mixing plants. It was developed specifically for markets where high mobility is in demand. All continuous asphalt mixing
plants from Ammann are equipped with a continuously running twoshaft paddle mixer, and the Prime 140 is no exception. One of its special features is a controllable outlet gate that enables the filling height
and therefore the mixing time to be set depending on recipe and output. The outlet gate also reduces losses during plant relocation and
commissioning/decommissioning.

Indonesia is a partner country of the Bauma 2013 and a fast-growing mark
More than island dream
In colonial times, European seafarers referred to the entire east
Asia region as India. And if a state consisted of many islands, the
Greek word “nesos” for island was added to “Indo” for India, hence
the name of the world’s largest island nation: Indonesia. It is a
name that stands for dream holidays for many people all over the
world.
The largest state in south-east Asia consists of
no less than 17,508 islands. Only 6,044 are
inhabited. By 238 million people. This makes
the republic on the equator the fourth largest
nation on Earth by population. Java is home
to the capital city of Jakarta and to 12 million
citizens, making it the most densely populated of all the islands. Nearly the entire population, namely 200 million people, are Muslim.
This makes Indonesia the country with the
largest Muslim population in the world. However, Islam is not a state religion.
In 2012, the gross domestic product amounted to USD 928 bn, a year-on-year increase
of 6 %. This puts Indonesia in 16th place by
international comparison. The rate of increase
of 6 % has been constant over a number of
years in Indonesia and is forecast to remain
stable in the future. In fact, global business consultants predict that Indonesia will
become the seventh largest economic nation
in the world by 2030.
Small wonder, then, that Indonesia keeps
popping up in the sights of economic experts
on the look-out for new growth markets. The
interesting thing about Indonesia’s economy –
and what separates it from other Asian coun-

tries – is that its economic growth is not driven by exports. Private consumption is by far
the largest driving force behind the economy.
Investments in infrastructure
Investments are also a major driving factor alongside consumption. The year-on-year
real growth rate for investments in the years
2010 to 2012 was 8 % over the previous year
in each case. Foreign investors, predominantly from Asia, aim to satisfy the needs of Indonesia’s domestic market. Government investments have recently started to play a more
significant role. The state budget for 2012
provided for a 30 % increase in government
investments. Why? A weak infrastructure is
17
the greatest hindrance to stronger economic growth. Severe deficits in this area lead
to paradox circumstances: a mandarin from
Argentina that has to travel thousands of kilometres to reach a market in Indonesia is only
slightly more expensive than a piece of locally picked fruit. This is because around 30 % of
the production costs incurred by Indonesian
companies are due to transport.
Indonesia’s government decided to take
action and, according to its master plan, will
invest nearly USD 190 bn in the infrastructure by 2025. A large portion of this sum is
earmarked for the energy sector (40 %) and
for new roads and railway lines (20 % in each
case). That means a total of USD 37.5 bn will
flow into road and bridge construction. It is
probable that a large number of infrastructure projects will be implemented by publicprivate partnerships (PPP). As there is a lack
of tax benefits or other financial incentives
for private participation and as the legal situation concerning projects is often unclear,
foreign companies are more likely to benefit from supplying machinery and equipment
than being involved in projects.
An approach for Ammann
A total of 7,500 heavy construction machines
were imported to Indonesia from abroad in
2007. In 2011, the figure exceeded 20,000.

Ammann’s customers in Indonesia find the market-compliant plant and machinery compelling.

tions. Numerous machines from Ammann are
meanwhile hard at work on the islands, from
lightweight to heavyweight compactors; the
first mini-pavers have been in action since last
year.
Plant follows machinery
The launch of machine technology was followed by a first step in the plant segment at
the beginning of this year. The first Ammann
asphalt mixing plant now stands in Jakarta. It is a slim batch plant with an hourly output rate of 150 tonnes. The material is held
ready in four cold feed bins. The burner works
with gas and diesel as clean fuels. Filler is also
reclaimed. Cloth filters are used for dedusting as conditions are very humid. The mixed
material storage silo has a capacity of 100
tonnes. The plant is controlled by as1 soft12 million people live in the capital Jakarta, where
the Organisation of ASEAN States is headquartered, with a further 11 million in the surrounding areas.

The island of Java is home to the UNESCO world heritage site of Borobudur (Buddhist) …

to have the software available in 30 different languages. Ammann is currently creating
a new local structure to follow up on the initial success. It is already clear that small but
highly mobile mixing plants will play a large
role due to the fact that the country is spread
across so many islands.
Every customer can, of course, expect to
receive European quality at sensible prices, regardless of whether they purchase a
machine or a mixing plant from Ammann. The
core components of all Ammann plants are
made exclusively in Langenthal, Switzerland.
This well-thought-out technology is namely in high demand in Indonesia. Although
reclaimed asphalt is not yet an issue, it is
nonetheless a business prospect for both
sides. The building industry on this continent
wants to be well equipped for future trends.
Of course, selecting Jakarta as the site for
the first plant was a very conscious choice.
Not only because the forecasts for the construction industry there are promising. Indonesia is in many ways a reference market for
the entire region of south-east Asia. That is
also why ASEAN chose to have its headquarters there. ASEAN (Association of South-East
Asian Nations) was founded in 1967 by the
five countries of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. Today,
the association also includes Vietnam, Laos,
Cambodia, Myanmar and Brunei. The vision
of ASEAN’s founding fathers is set to be fulfilled in 2015: the implementation of an economic community that is home to 600 million
people. There will be no supreme commission
or common currency, but there will be a more
intensive political dialogue to maintain economic stability in the region. Combined with
Japan and Korea, it represents a good basis
for Ammann to gain a foothold in the area.

Project HERA
Research under the banner of
sustainability
Ammann supports the HERA (Highly Ecological Recycling Asphalt
system) research project run by the Dutch VolkerWessels subsidiary
KWS Infra as a development partner. The objective of the new process at the heart of the research programme is to make more sustainable use of reclaimed asphalt, i.e. to use more of it in combination with less environmental pollution in the production of asphalt.
An important intermediate stage was achieved with the ceremonial
dedication of the prototype which was attended by the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs in September 2012.
Holland adopted a leading role in recycling
reclaimed asphalt early on due to the basic
lack of aggregates that is used in road construction. The conventional cold feed method was replaced in the 1980s by a warm feed
method incorporating the use of co-flow
parallel drums. Today, the average proportion of reclaimed asphalt lies at around 50 %
throughout the country. The Dutch VolkerWessels Group started the HERA research project in response to the physical limitations of
reclaimed asphalt used in the co-flow principle and to ever stricter emission limit values.
Ammann has supported the research project managed by KWS Infra as a development
partner for a number of years.
Ambitious project goals
The general direction under the title “Sustainable asphalt production” aims to reduce CO2
emissions through a cleaner production process that is currently under development.
More specifically, KWS Infra has set its sights
on achieving a reclaimed asphalt proportion
of up to 100 % in conjunction with a reduction in energy consumption, emissions and
odours.
Indirect heating as a basis
In contrast to the recycling systems in use
today, HERA operates on the basis of indirect
heat transfer: the reclaimed aggregate is fed
through the drum in so-called satellite pipes.
Hot process gases flow around the satellite
pipes inside the rotating drum and heat them
up. Separating the combustion gases from the
reclaimed aggregate results in a gentler bitumen heating process, which in turn leads to
fewer emissions and less penetration loss of
the bitumen.
Opening ceremony in Rotterdam
After years of development work, KWS Infra
was able to construct and commission the
first HERA system at the existing ACR asphalt
mixing plant in Rotterdam in the first half of
2012. The existing plant control system was

The opening ceremony for HERA was held
on 11 September 2012 after various function

In his speech, the Dutch Minister for Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation – Maxime Verhagen – emphasised the significance

Challenges and next steps
After the first trial plant had opened, the project team started working on achieving the
intermediate process goals linked to the quantities produced with reclaimed asphalt and
achieved aggregate temperatures. The problems that go hand in hand with fundamental
innovation will necessitate process engineering adaptations and conversions to the test
plant in the coming months. Once the technical target values have been reached, the project team will face the task of transforming
methodological insights into an economically
attractive and therefore marketable solution.

Market launch of the Euro 3B (Tier 4) range of motorised rollers
Entire roller range from Ammann
meets the latest emission
standards
Ammann will undertake its largest market launch to date during the first half of 2013 in the field of
heavyweight compaction machinery. Following one of the most comprehensive development projects
in the history of the company, all product groups in the ride-on roller range are now equipped with the
latest engine technology.
Ammann’s single drum rollers from 3 to 17
tonnes, pneumatic tyred rollers and the articulated and pivot-steering tandem rollers from
1.2 to 14 tonnes are thus compliant with the
highest emission requirements and conform
to the Tier4i Euro 3B and Tier 4 interim standards. Ammann used the conceptional overhaul of the entire product line successfully to
further improve the products with regard to
operation and servicing work, in particular
in the area of ergonomics. A visually attractive, modern and economic line based on the
use of new materials, modular concepts and a
new alignment of the industrial design across
all product ranges will be launched on the
market.
All models with appropriate motorisation will,
of course, be available in 2013 to those markets that are currently unable to implement
the strict European emission directives.
Ecological aspects are the heart of
machine development
Over the past ten years, the regulations concerning the reduction of combustion engine
emissions from construction machinery have
become ever stricter, leading to an adaptation of emission standards from EU Stage I
to EU Stage IIIB. The current emission levels in the main sales areas are defined as “EU
Stage” in Europe and “EPA Tier” in North
America (for the USA).
The standardisation levels define the maximum amounts of emission particles and nitrogen oxides (NOX). By the time emission level
“EU stage 4” is introduced in 2015, the content of solid particles will be reduced by a factor of 25 and nitrogen oxide levels by a staggering 50 times. The extensive consideration
given to these future engine standards during the development of the latest roller gener-

First Ammann After Sales Conference
Training programme
for global service Responsibles
Winter time is maintenance time. In the northern part of the world,
this is the time to talk about service and replacement parts. As
was the case at the first After-Sales Conference for the Ammann
Group’s machine division. Ammann sent out invitations to its distributors around the world to come to the Czech town of Nové
Město and discuss the technical innovations at Ammann against the
background of the company’s motto, Productivity Partnership for a
Lifetime. But one-way communication was not the objective – dialogue was demanded and delivered.
The conference kicked off with an evening
meeting at speciality brewery Primator. Posezení
u piva (Czech for a cosy get-together) was the
order of the day following some particularly very long journeys to get there – the greatest
distance was covered by a guest from Australia.
From theory…
The participants then met up the next day for
the official event. The morning was reserved
for presentations at the Ammann International Training Center. Alwin Jaarsma, responsible for the international service organisation,
presented the entire Ammann Service world,
from the 24/7 hotline to technical support,
from the deployment of engineers around the
world to work on “hot cases” to the warranty extension named “AWesome”. Hansueli
Kunz, service manager in Langenthal, Switzerland, explained the interplay between information from a claim under warranty and the
continuous improvement process. The conference venue itself, namely the Training Center and its comprehensive training programme
that opened two years before, was the subject of a lecture by Jan Hejzlar, service manager in Nové Město. Searching for the right contact partner in the international After-Sales
Organisation was made easier by a presentation given by Andreas E. Noll on the AfterSales organisation’s structure. Against the
background of his responsibility for international spare parts supply, he explained how

regard to continuous, trouble-free machine
operation. Heiko Gräber, head of service Hennef, rounded off the first set of lectures with
the rules of play in After-Sales Service summarised in the Service Guideline.
…to practice
That afternoon, the participants had an
opportunity to see for themselves what it is
like to drive the recently launched ARX roller on an obstacle course. The prize was a
glass of beer, or rather whatever was left in
the glass standing on the engine hood after
the drive. The programme also included a trip
on a PT 240 pneumatic tyred roller and the
chance to see a paver in action. Other stations including inspecting various prototypes,
enabled the participants to contribute their
expert knowledge of service and maintenance
to the ongoing development.
The next highlight was an evening event held
at the castle in Nové Město. Classical music
and culinary delights made for an entertaining evening. Ammann was granted access
to the impressive rooms of the castle built in
1528 that are otherwise closed to visitors.

“It was my first visit to
Nové Město. Participating in the After-Sales Conference has been a very
positive experience for
me. The conference demonstrates Ammann’s
desire and readiness to raise the standards in
after sales. It was clear to me just how aware
Ammann is of the importance of after-sales
business. I know from my experience as a
mechanic that service and customer care can
forge or destroy a customer relationship for
ever. In my opinion, the conference was proof
of the Ammann commitment to partnerships
for a lifetime.”
Expert
speaker Emre Güler of Çukurova Ziraat demonstrated the next morning that high-tech
machines can be sold at locations other than
central Europe and how a well-developed service network can keep them operating reliably. Following on from the previous day’s
hands-on inspections of prototypes as a demonstration of Ammann’s development activities, Radek Remeš, product manager in Nové
Město, presented the development road map
for the wide range of Ammann products.
Critical analyses by customers
As a final exercise, Ammann subjected itself
to critical analysis by the after-sales experts:
four analyses were drawn up during a group
work session and presented by Ammann customers. The insights gained in this way will
subsequently help Ammann to develop the
after-sales market. But the final exercise did
not by any means signal the end of activities in Nové Město. Ammann’s partners had
an opportunity to take a bus to the city of
Prague. Although many had travelled from
far and wide, around half of the after-sales
experts made use of the opportunity to end
the first after-sales conference in the same
kind of atmosphere as it had begun: with a
cosy evening meal. One thing was clear to

Ammann Equipment Ltd in Great Britain
package approach from the Road
builder to the Rental Company
Ammann Equipment Ltd, the Ammann Group’s distribution company for the United Kingdom and
Ireland, is based in the historic
Shakespearian town of Stratfordupon-Avon right in the heart of
the UK. Ammann Equipment Ltd
is the national importer and distributor for the complete range
of Ammann’s compaction and paving products as well as asphalt
mixing plants.
Ammann's compaction products were first
introduced to the UK market back in the early
1970s, followed by Yanmar mini excavators in
1983. Following on from the initial success of
the first dealers, the Ammann Group decided
to open a wholly owned subsidiary, Ammann
Equipment Ltd, in 1989 to distribute and support the whole range of Ammann, Ammann
Yanmar and Rammax products. Operating
from a centrally located Head Office with
extensive warehouse and workshop facilities,
they are able to offer the backup you would
expect from a true global leader.
The right package for each customer
The package for the rental industry comprises compaction and mini excavators, lighting towers, telehandlers and other comple-
mentary products. Today, the UK represents
the world’s “most mature” rental market for
compact plant and equipment. More than
80 % of the market volume for walk-behind
compaction and light tandem rollers goes
into rental fleets. The plant hire companies
also represent the largest buying group for
mini-excavators. The long-term partnership
between Ammann and Yanmar in this market represents a comprehensive and attractive package to these rental groups by offering a world class product and outstanding
service out of one hand. Clearly a “One-Stop
Shop” approach. After recently completing a package deal for rollers, mini excavators and dumpers, Trevor Goodwin, the MD
of Already Hire said: “Ammann Equipment
Ltd is a very easy company to deal with. They
can supply leading brands direct from the
manufacturer offering compaction, excavators, attachments and tracked dumpers. All
of the machines that I needed were available
in stock and Ammann were also able to dispose of all of my used equipment, at good
prices. This made the deal very easy to finalise”, he added.

From the rock to the road
After integrating the Asphalt plant activities, Ammann Equipment Ltd can also offer
the most complete product range to the road
building and construction industry. Robert
Brown explains: “There might be other suppliers who are able to offer similar, individual products to us, but at Ammann we do not
have any single competitor that can offer the
same range of equipment that is designed
and manufactured by one single company.
Nobody understands the needs of the road
building customers better than we do.”
The package of market leading asphalt plants
and complete full line offering of asphalt
compactors was completed with the recent
addition of the new line of pavers. The
youngest members of the Ammann product
family further widen the offering to the road
building customers.
Considering that Ammann only recently started its activities in the paver business in 2009,
this is a real success story that took off in
these initial three years, reaching a market share of more than 20 per cent. One of
the main drivers and success factors to realise such a fast entrance of a new product
segment has been the partnership between
Ammann Equipment Ltd and its sole paving
machine dealer Pavemac Ltd.
A perfect partnership for success
Pavemac is one of the most experienced companies in the field of selling, servicing and
refurbishing asphalt finishers in the United Kingdom and “beyond” – with customer relationships and business established in
more than 35 other countries such as Australia, Canada, South Africa and more. The competence, performance and professionalism of
Pavemac are well recognised and appreciated worldwide.
Pavemac was founded by Managing Director
John Finn and Service Director Keith Dearing
in May 2006 and began trading in early 2007.
Both John and Keith have numerous years of
experience in the paving industry. They and
a number of other Pavemac employees were
formally part of the team at Finnpave, which
was sold to a competitor in 2001. Pavemac

for the Antec pavers, a role that they are ably
continuing for Ammann Equipment.
The facilities at Pavemac are second to none
with a purpose built workshop, stores and
state-of-the-art paint spraying facilities. All
these, together with an engineering workforce skilled in hydraulics, electrics, fabrication, fitting and spraying, ensure a quality
service every time, whether a paver is in the
workshop for a service, overhaul, refurbishment or a complete re-spray.

Service as the key to success
Mobile engineers also provide a speedy, comprehensive service at customers’ premises or
on the roadside throughout the UK and Ireland. All service vans are fitted with essential
maintenance equipment and tools together
with a wide range of spare parts so breakdowns can be resolved on site immediately. Pavemac holds an extensive stock of spare
parts for Ammann pavers together with other
asphalt related equipment.
As well as being a dealer for new Ammann
pavers, Pavemac also carry a large stock of
used Antec, Ammann and other makers of
pavers for sale which can be overhauled to
customer’s requirements. There is also a large
fleet of Ammann pavers for hire. Pavemac
provide a comprehensive paver service to the

The true extent of a 35 % incline becomes very apparent in side view.
Roads of the world: Part 6
Steep, steeper, steepest
Baldwin Street is located in North East Valley, near Dunedin in New Zealand, and is
not for the faint of heart. The record-breaking descent by bicycle reached a speed of
117 km/h. Chocolate balls take a mere 28 seconds to cover the 200-metre stretch. According to the Guinness Book of Records, Baldwin
Street is the steepest road in the world that is
open to motorised traffic. It has an incline of
35 %. The streets of San Francisco simply cannot compete.
Over the decades the street has become one
of the attractions of the second largest town
on New Zealand’s south island. It attracts a
million visitors every year. Dunedin was once
the country’s richest town and home to New
Zealand’s first university; today it ranks as
the fourth most significant cultural city. And
Baldwin Street is one of the most interesting
places.
The “Baldwin Street Gutbuster”, a 750-metre
race held every September, has contributed
to the street’s fame. The objective is to run
to the top of the street and then back down
again. The record of just 1.56 minutes was set
in 1994. An annual charity event was introduced in 2002, during which 30,000 round,
orange-flavoured chocolate balls financed by
local sponsors are rolled down the hill. The
road is mainly paved with large concrete slabs
as asphalt would “slide” down the hill during
installation.
One thing is clear: cars should always be
parked with the handbrake firmly applied.
Turning around is naturally not an option.
Hikers soon break out in a sweat. But anyone who has successfully conquered Baldwin
Street can claim a certificate from the tourist
office when he comes back down.

Via Appia – the oldest road in the world
Queen of the road
It is still navigable by traffic, even though it
is 2,500 years old. Construction work on the
Via Appia was started by Appius Claudius
Caecus, an important politician and statesman
of the central Roman republic, in the year
312 BC. The initially unpaved Via Appia originally stretched a “mere” 195 km from Rome
to Capua and served the purpose of military
supplies. The Via Appia was extended when
Brundisium (the Brindisi of today) became the
most important transfer site for goods and
slaves from the orient in 190 BC. The route
then measured 540 km and soon became one
of the most important trading routes of the
Roman empire.
Even today, as national highway number 7, it
plays a significant role as a part of Italy’s road
network and still largely follows the route of
the antique road. It runs completely straight
for 62 km across the Pontine plain – making
it the longest straight road in Europe. Today,
those parts of the ancient road that have not
been covered are known as the Via Appia
Antica; it is still possible to admire the ancient
paving and other important archaeological

sights such as thermal baths and catacombs.
In 1951, the Appia Antica was cut in two by
the circular highway around Rome. The damage has meanwhile been undone: the highway is routed through a tunnel. The Via Appia
Antica and surrounding areas were declared
a regional park in 1988 to protect them from
encroaching urban construction – hopefully, they will remain preserved for visitors to
Rome a thousand years from now.

Brazil
BMC as new Ammann dealer
Three ASC 100 D/T1 single drum rollers at work on site at the refinery of the large-scale project Premium I – Petrobrás.
Ammann has gained Brasil Máquinas de Construção (BMC), a company with more than 36
strategically located sales and service organisations throughout Brazil, as a new partner for the sale of Ammann asphalt mixing
plants, pavers and compactors. This cooperation together with other Brazilian partners
will provide every end user in virtually every
federal state of the country with access to
Ammann products.
The head office of BMC in Santana de Parnaíba
near São Paulo.
BMC’s success story seems boundless: since
its foundation in 2007 it has grown to
become one of the largest sales and distribution companies for construction machinery on
the Brazilian market. Today, BMC can consider itself an end-to-end provider for any construction site.
The young and ambitious company is based
in Santana de Parnaíba, close to the economic
metropolis São Paulo; its 500 employees generate around 1 billion real (€ 370 m). State-ofthe-art technology controls the entire logistics
system with more than 22,000 spare parts in
stock and prepares the orders to be shipped
across the country. Well-equipped service
vehicles manned by service teams trained for
specific products provide the customers with
on-site support. Ammann’s guiding principle,
“Partnership for a Lifetime”, applies accordingly to BMC.
“In the short time since establishing our partnership, we have already sold nine ASC 100
rollers to the consortium Galvão Engenharia, Serveng & Fidens. The machines are used
for earth-moving work in the large refinery
project Premium I – Petrobrás, 100 km away
from São Luís in Maranhão State”, explains
Felipe Cavalieri, CEO of BMC.
An initial investment of 25 million real
(€ 9.2 m) and extensive growth potential
make the Brazilian group the ideal partner for
the Ammann Group. “We are both proud and
ready to fulfil Brazil’s need for machines, systems and services relating to road construction”, says Felipe Cavalieri.

Ammann successfully presented its technologies, products and services at the impressive trade fair stand in Shanghai.
China
At the Bauma Shanghai for
the 6th time
The Bauma China from 27–30 November
2012 was a huge success with more than
180,000 visitors (16 % up on last year) from
over 140 countries. Ammann participated as
an exhibitor for the sixth time.
A stand measuring 468 m2 was a befittingly
impressive backdrop for Ammann to present a
number of highlights. They included the mixing module for the ColdMix 400 asphalt mixing plant and a 24 megawatt multi-fuel burner for oil and gas; recycling reclaimed asphalt
was also the subject of a presentation.
Amman’s Customer Service division gave the
audience a direct demonstration of the special
Amdurit wear protection coating in an elevator application. The main attraction at the
Ammann stand this year was the 320 tonne
capacity mixing tower of the BlackMove II.
Ammann was able to set itself apart from the
competition as the only exhibitor with a fully
road-mobile asphalt mixing plant. Additionally, the proprietary as1 control system impressively demonstrated Ammann’s leading role as
a technological pioneer. The intelligent control system supports every new process such
as the integration of foamed bitumen, variable reclaimed asphalt feed and peak load
management.
Ammann welcomed many satisfied visitors to
its stand during the trade fair, who acquired
information on Ammann’s technologies, products and services. Most visitors hailed from
China, the Asia-Pacific Region, the Middle
East and the far stretches of eastern Europe.
It was very important to Ammann to be an
exhibitor at the trade fair. Liguang Zhang,
Director of Marketing and Sales, Ammann
Construction Machinery Shanghai Co. Ltd.,
notes that road construction in China has
developed significantly over the past ten
years and that road maintenance is gaining ever greater importance. China needs
new technologies such as asphalt recycling or
low-temperature asphalt; the Bauma China
offers a perfect platform on which to present solutions to precisely these requirements.
Ammann was able to successfully present
itself together with its technologies, products
and services, which demonstrated its competence as a company and strengthened its
market position.

Johann Bunte is one of Germany’s leading construction companies. Established in 1872 in the north
Germany town of Papenburg, over the past 15 years Bunte has developed into a very efficient general provider of construction services in Germany. Its business areas include road construction, civil
engineering, railway construction, hydroelectric engineering, earthwork, engineering and special
heavy construction, bridge construction, and pipe and plant construction. The family-owned business is now in the fifth generation and has around 1700 employees. The group of companies currently owns nine asphalt mixing plants: seven stationary Ammann mixing plants in north Germany and two mobile Ammann plants in Poland and Frankfurt. Bunte's total production capacity lies at
just under 2 million tonnes of asphalt per year.
nology and reclaimed asphalt recycling concepts that clearly rise above the current standard of technology, as the group emphasises in
its press releases. The plant meets the strictest
environmental standards that permit no more
than two-thirds of the specified emission limits for all emissions such as noise, odour and
fine dust. Furthermore, the burner's high efficiency level of 93 % significantly reduces
CO2-emissions in comparison to conventional technology. Virtually all of the ash resulting from burning brown coal dust as fuel
is collected by an efficient filter system and
returned to the production cycle. The energy consumption of the 19 megawatt plant is
minimised through the use of the latest burner technology.

DMD “Asphalt Concrete Technology
JSC” banks on Ammann
Road construction company DMD places its
trust in technology from a single source for
asphalt production, installation and compaction. Following the installation of an Ammann
JustBlack asphalt mixing plant, DMD took
delivery of an additional AFT 500 G paver and
three rollers – the heavyweight AV 110 X tandem roller, an AP 240 PTR pneumatic tyred
roller and a lightweight AV 40-2 tandem roller.
The AFT 500 tracked finisher was commissioned by application engineer Gianluca Gamberini together with the authorised Ammann
dealer and service partner at the DMD site in
Haiphong City in the An Duong district. That
is also where the asphalt mixing plant was
installed just a few months ago. DMD entered
the road construction market with an experienced team and focuses on large-scale road
and infrastructure construction projects.
Quality asphalt for the streets of Hanoi
The first assignment providing an opportunity
for the new equipment to prove its efficiency
and quality is the repair and resurfacing of the
four-lane “National Highway No. 5” between
Hanoi and Haiphong. A 20 km long section
that will be extended during the course of
2013 was assigned to DMD.
Nguyen Lo Giang, director of DMD, summarises the opportunities arising from the purchase of quality products from Ammann as
follows: “Investing in a high-quality European
plant is a good decision. The JustBlack enables
us to produce quality asphalt and, in doing so,
set a high standard for the local industry. We
can improve the quality of the asphalt roads in
and around Hanoi thanks to a comprehensive
range of asphalt mixing plant, pavers and rollers from Ammann. We

now intend to integrate our proven cold feed
system for reclaimed asphalt in the existing
system and to purchase a mobile batch mixing plant before the year is out. That mobility
will enable us to provide high-quality asphalt
mixes to other provinces.”

Cramo and Strabag square up at the
first Ammann Ice Hockey Cup 2012
Ammann sent out invitations to the first Ice Hockey Cup 2012
shortly after the start of the ice hockey season. It took place in
Nové Město nad Metují at the end of October 2012 and was
attended by international teams.
A team of Finnish and Swedish players from
the Cramo Group, a team from Ammann’s
Czech partner Strabag and local ice hockey
club HC Rychnov took part alongside Team
Ammann CZ, the local team from Ammann
Czech Republic. The Cramo Team left the ice
as the well-deserved winners after a hotly
contested tournament. Ice hockey enthusiasts and team captains Vesa Koivula, president and CEO of the Cramo Group, Tomáš
Vyskočil, managing director of the Strabag purchasing company BMTI in the Czech
Republic, and Christian Stryffeler, Executive
Vice President Machines at Ammann, struck a
very positive balance. That is also “Productivity
Partnership for a Lifetime”.
Machines and ice hockey are two very different areas. When and how did the idea
of an Ammann ice hockey tournament
arise?
Vesa Koivula: Christian Stryffeler and I have
often talked about ice hockey. He then told
me of his plans to organise a tournament. I
was immediately taken by the idea and promised that our Cramo Team would join in. And
we did it! We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit
to Nové Město.
Christian Stryffeler: Some of the employees at the Ammann production plant in
Nové Město have played ice hockey regularly for years. During a business trip last year,
Vesa Koivula and I discovered that we are
both active players in our respective company teams. We decided there and then to
organise a tournament in the Czech Republic.
Were you satisfied with how the tournament went and the result your team
achieved?
Vesa Koivula: Yes, indeed. We very much
enjoyed the smooth organisation and the
tournament itself. The visit was a complete

success for our team as we won the tournament!
Tomáš Vyskočil: We were very pleased with
the course and quality of the tournament. For
us, it was not only a sporting event but also
an opportunity to visit the Ammann production plant. Of course, we were delighted with
the position achieved by our team. We put up
a good fight, but in the end the Cramo Team
pulled through and deserved to win.
Christian Stryffeler: The entire competition
was well organised and ran without a hitch.
We gave our best, but the Ammann team
unfortunately only made last place.
Do you train regularly in this line-up or was
it just a coincidental selection of colleagues
who share a passion for ice hockey?
Vesa Koivula: Ice hockey is a very popular hobby within the Cramo Group. We have
teams in Finland, Sweden and Lithuania. We
train once a week and often play against the
teams of our customers.
Tomáš Vyskočil: Our team line-up was anything but coincidental. Most of our team
members regularly meet once a week to train
for 1.5 hours. The others were our colleagues
from the Strabag SE Group.
Christian Stryffeler: No, we do not have any
regular training sessions. But we do try to get
to the ice hockey rink as often as we can. Anyone with the time to train is welcome.
This tournament more or less kicked off
the ice hockey season. Do you have any
plans to participate in other company
tournaments or similar competitions?
Vesa Koivula: Every year we organise an
internal tournament in Finland for the Cramo
Group in Helsinki. We play against our customers and always have great fun. We have
done that now for six years.
Tomáš Vyskočil: Yes, this tournament was
the kick-off for our ice hockey season, during
which we will participate in the four tournaments of the “Strabag Cup”. The tournament
organised by the Strabag SE Group is now in
its eighth year and is open to Group teams
from across the Czech Republic.
The Ammann Cup 2012 was the first ever
tournament. Can we assume the tournament will be repeated in future years and
become a fixed event?
Christian Stryffeler: I hope so. It is a great
opportunity to meet our customers not only
at a business level but also to spend some
time together and have some fun in a relaxed
atmosphere.
Would you participate in future tournaments?
Vesa Koivula: We would love to come back.
Tomáš Vyskočil: The whole trip was great
fun. We will participate in future tournaments
and challenge the Cramo Team.

Competition in the last magazine:
The winner
is from Switzerland!
The competition in our last customer magazine was all about the Bauma in Munich. Finding the right answer to the question required a little research in our magazine and on the Internet. Those who did, found out that the Bauma takes place
every three years, that more than 420,000 visitors came to the last trade fair, that the Ammann stand at the largest marquee is recognisable by the large red letter A, and that the best way to end a day at the fair is to visit one of the legendary
Ammann customer events.
The ten prizes were raffled among the many correct entries received from around the world.
Didier Jouvenat of PQR Beton SA in Gland, Switzerland, is the winner of a trip to the Bauma 2013 in Munich. He and a companion will have the opportunity to view the entire product range with its many novelties and innovations on Ammann's
“Road of Innovation” as well as other sights of the fair and Munich city from 15–21 April 2013.
The winners are:
1 prize (2 nights for 2 people at a four-star hotel in the centre of Munich during the Bauma 2013 between 15 and 21 April
2013, including travel from the winner’s home country, maximum value € 2,000): Didier Jouvenat, Gland, Switzerland.
