ANNUAL
REPORT
A Community Response to Ending Family Homelessness
Family Homelessness
Families with children constitute the fastest growing
segment of the homeless population, nationally and
locally.
The Florida Council on Homelessness for 2013 notes that
almost half of all persons experiencing homelessness are
individuals in families, and that Florida represents the
third largest population of homelessness in the country.
Unfortunately, when families (who are barely getting by)
financially stumble and have no other resources,
homelessness is a real and frightening possibility.
Family Promise of Brevard
Family Promise of Brevard became incorporated in 2007, operational in September 2013, and is one of 189 Family
Promise affiliates across the county. In Brevard County, we are the only emergency shelter option for families with fathers or for mothers with boys over the age of 12. Thirteen host congregations throughout the county have agreed to
take turns opening their doors to provide temporary shelter, meals, and hospitality to four families (up to 14 people),
one week at a time, four times a year.
During the day, our Case Management Team works closely with the families to assess, address, and alleviate the barriers to obtaining permanent housing. We partner with community agencies to meet our families’ educational, medical,
behavioral health, and financial needs. This unique shelter model mobilizes existing resources within the community to
take a hands-on approach to solving homelessness.
The need for our services continues to grow as more and more families in our community fall into homelessness.
We receive an average of 75 calls a month from families and children sleeping in cars, tents, or unsafe conditions. To
meet this demand, now and in the future, Family Promise is committed to the viability and growth of the organization
and its services to address the needs of family homelessness and advocating for affordable housing in Brevard County.
