Sarah currently lives and paints in Duncanville, TX and is known for her sensitive touch
with watercolors, especially her portraits. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts
from Houghton College and also studied art and portraiture in Italy. In addition to receiving national and regional recognition for her work in
competitive art shows such as Texas and Neighbors
Regional Exhibition and Society of Watercolor Artist’s International Exhibition, Sarah is also sought out
as a guest demo artist, curator, and juror. Sarah has
traveled extensively, translating what she sees into
wet color or pen-and-ink sketches. She has also
taught high school art and private lessons and always
finds her students inspiring. She loves to take the train
into the city and watch people or go to the zoo with
“Manuella”
her sketchbook.

BIG PLEIN AIRE PAINT OUT REPORT
The plein aire paint out at the Historic Nance Farm on October 1 was a great success. Fourteen artists enjoyed “Chamber of Commerce” weather. Lunch was great. Lovita Irby (Bluebonnet Art Gallery) judged the
work by the artists that was painted on gesso’d panels provided by Richeson Art. $300 in prizes were
awarded to winners. See inside for more details.

WHO, WHAT,WHEN, WHERE AND SOMETIMES—HOW
Congratulations to DeSoto Art League member, Sheridan Keglovits, who received the Gamblin Oil Award recognition for his painting 'Bucks', at the Irving Art Association national
Wildlife Juried Art Competition, Irving TX. Announcements were made at a reception, October 14, 2012. The exihition runs through October 25, 2012.
Joe Blanford had three paintings, NYC Geometry, Boathouse Repose and Ano Mera accepted
into the Waterloo Watercolor Group Fall Show jurored by Judi Betts, AWS. NYC Geometry:
Rooftop was awarded 1st Place.
Bev Thompson had her oil painting "Grape Creek, Luckenbach, Texas" accepted into the
Waxahachie City Hall Exhibition.
Sandy Reese attended an oil workshop at the Rockport Center for the Arts with Ewoud de
Groot. Ewoud de Groot lives and works in Egmond aan Zee, a coastal village in the north of
the Netherlands. He is currently the resident artist at the Rockport Center for the Arts.
The DeSoto Art League anticipates the City of DeSoto’s approval of two grants for the upcoming year. One for $2,000 for the art Show and for for $450 for the monthly City Hall art exhibits. Final approval is expected this month.
The Plein Aire paintout on October1 was a great success. The City of DeSoto and the DeSoto
Historical Commission want to make this an annual affair with promised support. Way to go
guys!
Our President, Julie, is working with the the DeSoto schools on a proposal to help support their
art programs. Look for more information at our meeting and in future newsletters.
Friends of the Library want to contact artists in DeSoto and surrounding areas and invite
them to be a vendor in our Harvest Craft Fair and Market. Our tables are just $20 and
we would love to have some local folks -- we currently have 12 vendors and we are hoping
for at least 12 to 20 more! Www.desototexas.gov/friends or 972-230-9662 for information.
Sarah Graham will have a reception for her DeSoto City Hall art exhibit on November 8
from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. It will be in the DeSoto City Hall Atrium Gallery.

PLEIN AIR PAINT OUT AT HISTORIAL NANCE FARM

On Monday, October 1, 2012, the DeSoto Historical Commission and the City of DeSoto hosted the DeSoto Art League and a
big Plein Aire Paint out at the Historic Nance Farm, located at 1325 Greenbrook Drive in the Mantlebrook Subdivision in DeSoto. The event started at 9:00AM and lasted into the afternoon. Lunch was furnished to the participants.
Fourteen artists participated. Some of the artwork is shown below.
Included in this paint out was a Jack Richeson & Co, Inc painting event. Hundreds of dollars worth of prizes were awarded after lunch.. Jack Richeson Art provided gesso’d art panels free to interested participants. VERY valuable gift certificates provided by Jack Richeson & Co. were awarded. Two panels were provided
free to each participant. All paintings considered for the prizes were painted on
the provided gesso’d panels.
Nance Farm
The Nance Farm was established in 1847. The barn on the property is the original
barn from that date. The family lived in
the barn for several years until the main
house was completed in ?1851. Over the
years, this property was farmed and then
late last century, it was used for meetings. (The DeSoto Art League was created in a meeting of local artists there in January 1981).
Lovita Irby (Owner of Bluebonnet Art Gallery) judged the entries in the competition.
Winners were: FIRST - Sheridan Keglovitz; SECOND - Jane Kahler; THIRD Tammy Wascovitch. Four Honorable Mentions were noted: Mary Rabien, Beth
VanDeventer, Barbara Patrie McPherson and Linda Schindler. First Place received a
$125 gift certificate; Second Place received a $100 gift certificate and Third Place received a $75 gift Certificate.

The event was such a success, both the City of DeSoto represented Ms. Lora
Stallings and
the DeSoto Historical Commission have requested that we
make this an
annual event.

2012 ANNUAL MEMBER’S ONLY ART SHOW
The 2012 Member’s Only Art Show will kick off November 28 with artwork due from 9:00AM to 12:30PM and from
1:30PM to 5:00PM. The show will be judged by Jane Jones, a Dallas artist that is extremely well qualified and well
known in the art circles world wide for her skills and artistic accomplishments.
Awards will be made on December 6 at the Christmas Dinner and Silent Auction to be held in the Blue Bonnet Room at
the City Center.
Art Work will be available to be picked up on January 2, 2014.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello DeSoto Art Leaguers,
The Plein Aire at Nance Farm was awesome.
The weather was on the cool side but the sun
kept us warm. We had thirteen artists from
around the area painting and myself. Everyone
picked a different scene. They were all really
beautiful. I Plein Aire painted for the first time
and am going to do it again!!! Some of you
need to try it out. It is a really a different and
unique experience.
Remember this month is Halloween!
Are you ready for the Trick or Treaters?
See you all on the 25th at 7:00 PM. Remember,
bring a piece of your art work for the MiniShow.
