Meet Joe Watts, the next CEO of Star Island
Dear Shoalers,
Since Vicky Hardy announced
her plans to retire and join
her family in Seattle, the Star
Island Board has given much
thought as to how to approach
the search for a new CEO.
During our deliberations we
recognized that an internal
candidate was very interested in
the position. After discussion,
the Board decided to interview
the internal candidate before
consideration of any external
search process.
I am very pleased to announce
that our Board has selected Joe
Watts to serve as the next CEO
of the Star Island Corporation.
In our conversations with him,
the Board was impressed by
his passion for Star, his serious interest in continuing
his personal growth, and his
understanding of the challenges
we face. We are excited about
how well Joe’s personal interests
fit the needs of Star Island. Joe
has a deep understanding of our
traditions, and a balanced sense
of how change can support our
sustainability and the core Star
Island experience.
We are committed to building
upon the great work we have
accomplished under Vicky’s
leadership. We are fortunate

Revisiting first impressions of island life, 5 years later
As most of you have known
for some time now, I will be
retiring from my role in the
corporation at the end of the
2012 season. So I thought
it might be interesting to
ref lect on my impressions of
Star Island that first season in
2008, and “update” those early
thoughts!
at what survives the harsh
winters…and still is a wonder to me! I especially enjoy
the Memorial Day Weekend
plant-a-thon, when hundreds
of tiny annua ls caref ully
placed in f lower boxes, cottage gardens, and other needy
areas to bring beautiful color
in July and August!
It was my first experience of
Star Island in the summer
season. There were many new
experiences to share.
• The massive numbers of
daffodils and the new tradition now of bring ing
buckets of them to the
Annual Meeting!
• The lilacs in full bloom,
and the f rag rance they
launched…
Vegetation – as a gardener,
this new environment was a
constant source of amazement
• The glorious rugosas…every
color and six weeks of blooms…
• The wild flowers tucked into
every rock and cranny…
• The incredible green of the
lawn after a rainy July…
• Dead-heading the annuals
and flower boxes as weekly
therapy…and being joined
by Shoalers who chat while
I pull.
The transitions from conference to conference, each
with their own identity and
f lavor…and now I look forward to seeing each group
of conferees with their special

to have time for a smooth leadership
transition from Vicky to Joe. We will be
working closely together in the months
ahead to implement an effective and forward-thinking transition plan.
You have known Joe most recently as our
General Island Manager, greeting you at
the “Fire & Water” orientation upon your
arrival on Star. Many have interacted with
Joe during his decades of engagement with
Star. Joe’s love of the island started when
he attended his first conference, LOAS II,
30 years ago. He started his commitment
to Star as an end-of-season Pelican in 1987
and has never looked back – working in a
number of seasonal and year-round roles
ever since. Joe served as our Acting Executive Director before Vicky’s arrival in
2008, and more recently as our Conference
Center Director. Joe is a leader dedicated
to Star Island, to the people who have been
coming for decades, and to the people who
are new to our Spirit’s Home. We will have
a CEO who has already formed enduring
relationships with many of you, and has
strong connections to our greater Island
and Seacoast communities.
Please join us in welcoming Joe to his new
position – I know he is eager to hear from
you about your hopes and dreams for the
future. And he’s excited to see you at the
Annual Meeting in April or on the island
this summer!

Gosport Regatta expands to weekend event in third year

two books recently reprinted by the Isles
of Shoals Association, and a book written by Shoalers Donald Cann, Gayle
Kadlik and John Galluzzo for the
Images of America Series called The
Isles of Shoals. The ISA-UU reprints
are Moonlight Murder on Smuttynose and
The Isles of Shoals in Lore and Legend,
both by Lyman Rutledge.

The inaugural Star Island Literary Festival will host Anita
Shreve, author of several novels including “The Weight of
Water,” which centered on the 1873 Smuttynose murders; local
author Katherine Towler, author of the “Snow Island” trilogy; and Corwin Ericson, author of “Swell,” in exploring the
theme of islands in literature. Participants are invited to interact with authors and those inspired by literature throughout a

Revisiting first impressions of island life, five years later (cont. from page 1)
attributes at the dock in Portsmouth.
• Wake-up singers in the halls in the early
morning hours…and the one wake-up
singer who wears a drawer from a chest
in Sprague as a “mask” when he sings!
• The screams of the “polar bears” in
their early morning swims…
• Dinner rituals, including but not
limited to, “theme” nights (pirates?),
birthday celebrations, the “lobster
bodies” cartel, and “calling out” the
kitchen staff and waitrae...
• Standing at the top of the chapel path
and watching my first candlelight procession come up the hill from the Oceanic…
and talking to a Shoaler who has actually
“met” the Lady in White on her late evening stroll down the chapel path…
• The Fourth of July parade, and watching seven(!) fireworks displays from
York, Maine to Hampton Beach…
The call of the Sirens…the Gift Shop,
the Bookstore, and the Snack Bar;
many options for spending money! Setting a budget for the gifts and books
was easy…and my family did benefit at
the holidays with all the “Star” related
items…the Snack Bar was harder. As a
diabetic, it is a particularly treacherous
Siren, but by carefully counting sugar/
carbohydrates to “save-up” for a small
scoop of Black Cherry…I could savor it
one teaspoon at a time on the porch at
sunset…and then walk off the calories
with a hike down to the float dock and
back up the hill…
Then there were the sounds of Star…
the fog horn, the buoy bell, the laughter
and shouts of children at play, the soft
murmur of people in intense discussions
in workshops, the choirs rehearsing, the
piano players in the lobby, the roar of the
waves on the rocks on the Atlantic side,
and the gulls…noisy, raucous, persistent, and the earliest risers on the island!
And most treasured of all, the many,
many chats with people eager to share
their stories about life on Star.
Late at night, in my room, in a non-conforming rocking chair by the window…
catching up on past issues of the New
Yorker, and listening to classical music
on Maine Public Radio…I know I made
the right decision in 2008 to join the
Star community…and I “will be back”!
